Yesterday, I turned my L4B on and the tubes lit up and the blower ran and the plate voltage was up to par. Today, I turned the L4B on and I heard a loud buzz/grunt. The breakers did not trip in the power supply. I turned the AMP off and scratched my head. I suspect the filter caps in the HV power supply. There was no HV showing on the meter . I left the power supply on for only 2 or 3 seconds. I have 8 new caps to replace the old ones with, but I just had surgery yesterday and can't get up enough steam to check it out. Re: [Drakelist] TR-3
Should you buy a TR3? I think the answer should be given after determining what he plans to do with it. One reason to purchase a Drake TR3 is the historic value to the hobby.I have been licensed for almost 54 years and have grown with the hobby from 6AG7/807 tube transmitter and Hallicrafters S40A receiver. They were wonderful for the purpose for which they were built and intended to been used. They are not my gear that I use regularly, but they bring back wonderful memories. I have one hundred of more radios from 1940 until present. I am NOT A COLLECTOR but I accumulate tube type radios of all manufacturers because of what they were and what they still are. Swan was pioneer in the transceiver field and did a great job from the SW 175 and continued for many years, even after being bought out by Cubic Communications. The TR3 is historic because it was R.L. Drake's FIRST transceiver. I HAVE A TR3 THAT I BOUGHT REASONABLY OFF EBAY IN NON WORKING CONDITION AND VERY DIRTY. Today it is a nice looking and working radio. Do I use it everydayNO!! WHY? I have the first model receiver that Drake built, the Drake 1A serial number 518 of 1000 built. When built, it was arguably the best receiver made in its' day( I also own a Collins 75A1, 75A2, and 75A4, for comparison). l am not bragging, just pointing out my perspective. I own a Drake 2A. Drake 2B, TR4 (that I use almost daily for net operation, R4, T4X,R4B,R4C,and T4XC and a great Drake L4B amp. No, they are not the $10,000.00+, Icom or the latest Kenwood, Orion or other solid state rig. The TR3 basically popularized the use of transceivers. There are many hams today who may not be able to operate separates. Other companies had gotten into the transceiver production, but not as affordable and basic as the TR3. My suggestion is that if you expect an almost "owner inability" rig to repair, digital readout with 3,000 memories, 65 push buttons, DON'T BUY the TR3, BUT "SOME DAY' you might wish you could find one to buy. This is not intended to start a THREAD, it is just my opinion. If anyone wants to attack my opinion, don't bother the reflector with it, feel free to reply DIRECTLY to me. 73, John, K5PGW To: drakelist@zerobeat.net Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 12:12 PM Subject: Re: [Drakelist] TR-3 On Tue, Dec 11, 2012 at 12:00 PM, wrote: Being a relative newbie to Drake equipment, is there any particular areas to consider with the TR3 other than the obvious and general operating condition? >?I don't recall anything negative in particular about this vintage radio. [Drakelist] Noise Limiter in Drake 2B
I bought my first Drake 2B in 1961, but like a dummy, sold it in about 1968 and regretted it until I was able to purchase a very nice replacement a couple of weeks ago. The replacement works well, but I am trying to determine how effective the NOISE LIMITER should be. I notice no difference in normal band static noise when I switch the Noise Limiter into the circuit. I would like your comments based on actual experience with a Drake 2B with a NOISE LIMITER. My experience with numerous Vintage Hammarlund, Hallicrafters, National and other brand receivers with a noise limiter has been that it is next to ineffective on noise and if the limiting is turned up on an adjustable noise limiter, it degrades gain and audio to the extent that listening to the noise is a better choice. Is that the same performance that I should expect on the Drake 2B noise limiter? Maybe I should look into noise BLANKERS for all my Drakes if that is the case. I know they are not common, but I seem to remember someone developing a blanker circuit for the Drake 4 Line. [Drakelist] REALLY DIFFERENT TR3
Thanks to some very nice guys on this list, who have been helpful to me, I have determined that I have a WEIRD Drake TR 3. My TR 3 is Serial # 6564 and since there were various versions, I now know that the two boards between tube sockets V 18 and V 19 and the audio transformer are wired differently than those two TR3s below #10,000 owned by my friends Doyle and Larry. When I hook up the 3.3K resistor to the terminals used in their TR 3s I get hot resistors and SMOKE When I put the 3.3k resistor between the top left terminal on the "forward" of the two boards and the top right terminal of the "next board back" from the front the receiver works albeit it is NOT very "hot" and the crystal calibrator reads only about S5 on the S meter. NO SMOKE when resistor is mounted between the two boards in that manner. Does anyone have a TR 3 which has the 3.3k resistor mounted between the two boards at the top terminals of each??? MY schematic diagram is almost unreadable and the part designations and values are almost unreadable. In addition, my manual and schematic did not come with the TR 3 I have. I love Drakes, but sometimes I think each was wired as if it was a prototype wired and assembled by retarded CHIMPS. Anyone have any suggestions for trouble shooting this WEIRD conglomeration without the specific schematic and manual for this run of TR3s. Speaking of "runs" this thing gives me the runs!! It does not have a nut holding it to the chassis because it mounts with the tabs. In addition, it has a short plastic shaft that has a screwdriver slot in it. There is not much clearance between the side of the chassis and the cabinet. That is why it mounts as it does. Re: [drakelist] Drake TR3 info needed
John King <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Garey, I probably need to purchase your CDs Hi! Hi!. I have a good working T4XC and R4C, a great working R4 now and a sick TR3, sick Tr4 and sick T4X. I wish Drake had left the transistors out. I really don't know how to check those circuits. My TR3 was working this morning and the audio became very distorted and eventually two resistors opened up. Can't read the color code on them. They are 1/2 watt resistors and one goes frontop end of the small sub-chassis board to one end of the Zero pot. On the schematic, I see what appears to be a 200 or 220 ohm resitor going to one of the pot. Not sure if that is it. The second resistor bridges between two of the vertical sub-chassis boards. One board is standing beside V 19 and the other is standing by V 18. The burned resistor goes from the top corner of each board. One end has a 100K resistor where it attaches to the board and the other end ataches to the other board where a 5.8K resistor is attached. I am not sure what would smoke these two 1/2 watt resistors but while I was away from the shack , at breakfast, a "queer electron" must have gotten loose.
