Be sure to check manufacturer's data first as there are some 6GJ5's that are
too tall for the t4X cage. The 6GJ5A by RCA is ok and SND Tube Sales used to
sell them in matched pairs for $25 in 2002.

Actually, the 6GJ5 is spec'd identically with the exception of the
supressor grid configuration (which is not a concern in the Drake
apps). I've used them plug and play in several of my Drake stations and
they work fine.

Basically the standard substitutes are going to be problems. Even
some 6JB6s are issues. Try this link for discussion of issues with
neutralizing off brands and subs

http://www.mail-archive.com/drakelist@www.zerobeat.net/msg04475.html

All that said, the critical issue with life on the 6JB6s is to not key
down long while tuning, and as someone else suggested making sure you are
correctly tuned on the PA (aka resonated the tank). If you run twins have
a look at my post on a kind to finals tune up here

http://www.mail-archive.com/drakelist@www.zerobeat.net/msg03471.html

And the book A family affair about the RL Drake compay has a good
discussion on test done.

Good luck, and hope this data helps.

Hello Paul, to answer your question on substitute tubes, there are no
substitutes for the 6JB6 tube. I know there are several like the 6KM6 and
I could identify several more, but none of them will substitute. The
reason being those tubes have different interelectrode capacitance. I have
experimented with several of these substitute tubes and found because of the
difference in capacity the tuning is different and sometimes very strange.
I found all of them will work fine on 80 and 40 meters, you get into
trouble on the higher bands. All of then tend to oscillate, neutralization
is impossible and if it does it drifts around. Some of the substitutes will
run a lot more power on 80 and 40, again not work on the high bands, but on
80 and 40 while running more power they burn up the other transmitter
components.

The bottom line is there are no real substitutes for the 6JB6. I know its
bummer but going down the substitute path will eventually cause problems.

Here is a link to my drake website, here I have an article where I tested
some of these substitutes.

Paul -

The 6GJ5 is a good replacement. It's _identical_ to the 6JB6, with
the exception that the suppressor grid is tied to the cathode internally
in the GJ. This is of no concern in the grounded cathode Class AB1
operation of the Drake finals. It doesn't appear to affect the
neutralization. Some have reported reduced gain on 10M, but I haven't
seen that problem.. There is variation among brands, especially on
10M. The name brands don't seem to be a problem, i.e., Sylvania, RCA,
GE and Zenith (appear to be Sylvania by construction) all work fine.
The Standard and Raytheon brands do NOT work, at least in my experience
with several samples. The gain drops dramatically on the higher bands,
to only 10-15W on 10M, and not much better on 15.

They will plug in directly in the T-4(any) transmitters, and (probably)
in the TR-(any) series, although I haven't tried them there.

I have not had any luck with using the 6JG5's in place of the 6JB6's. I
could neutralization on 15 and 10 meters though I only tried a few RCA's and
GE's. Also some of the 6JG5's are too tall.
