In 1.5 at least the size of headlines is set dynamically depending on character
count. See /webapps/xmlui/themes/dri2xhtml/structural.xsl lines ~1325.

Re: [Dspace-tech] batch import, nothing happening

2009-04-20 Thread Thomas A McGee
One, try running it with the test flag ( -t ) at the end of the command line.
Two, your collection ought to look something like 12345/1, not just 1, where
12345 is the handle (12345789 is the default you use if you haven't set up your
handle service yet, I think).

Re: [Dspace-tech] Handle Server problem

2009-03-06 Thread Thomas A McGee
We had a similar problem, only it was with Oracle. The first connection of the
day, when we were still in set-up mode, would take two to three minutes to come
up!

Our solution was to set up a cron job to "wget" the home page every 10 minutes
or so. Since then, no problem.

Wouldn't it be more efficient anyway to simply reference an external .js file?
Structural.xsl already has an example chunk of code:

[Dspace-tech] Trying to restart HANDLE server

2009-01-27 Thread Thomas A McGee
I've seen the instructions to kill off the process, there might be two of them,
then run start-handle-server.

But what is the HANDLE server process called? I don't see anything under ps -A
that looks like a likely candidate.

Re: [Dspace-tech] : help needed with breadcrumb layout please

2009-01-16 Thread Thomas A McGee
Stuart,

The HTML for the breadcrumbs is generated by the XSL files, specifically
[dspace]/webapps/xmlui/themes/dri2xhtml/structural.xsl. You'll find the code at
approximately line 272.

This is a complicated bit of work to do. Refer to the documentation (It's
covered in there somewhere I think) for specifics, but the general principle is
that you are going to be overloading one of the XSLT templates that's contained
in structural.xsl. You won't modify structural.xsl directly, but rather take
the complete chunk of template code in question (look for a line ) and paste that entire template it into the .xsl file
that's in the theme directory of your choice. Edit it there to do what you
need. There's also the whole rebuild/restart b**t that DSpace demands for
even simple changes.

What happens is, that set of templates gets loaded after the generic dri2xhtml
templates, and so overwrites them.

Hope this helps.

[Dspace-tech] HANDLE server / Oracle / Firewall

2009-01-07 Thread Thomas A McGee
I have my handle server up and running, it's responding over the necessary
ports. But it's not able to get the actual handles from my Oracle database. The
database box is located across a firewall, and we've already opened a port so
that the DSpace application itself can communicate with it. Does the handle
server require or use a separate port that we will need to open, or does it use
a different protocol?

[Dspace-tech] Import problem: Items not going into collections

2008-11-14 Thread Thomas A McGee
We're having a problem with items being imported (either by batch mode or
individually) going into the system, but not showing up in their proper
collection. Case in point, this item which I found by text-searching:

http://repository.shu.edu:8080/xmlui/handle/123456789/384

Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see that it appears in the "Chesterton
Review" collection. However, if you visit that collection, it doesn't show up
on any of the browse lists.

Not good. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

[Dspace-tech] Thumbnails created in shell/not created in cron job

2008-11-05 Thread Thomas A McGee
I've figured it out. You can't have the java call directly in the crontab.
You need to write a shell script that brings in the proper environmental
variables and sets the PATH, and then that script makes the java call.
Mine looks like this:

SHELL=/bin/bash

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/home/dspace/app/java
export ANT_HOME=/usr/home/dspace/app/ant
export MAVEN_HOME=/usr/home/dspace/app/maven
export CATALINA_HOME=/usr/home/dspace/app/tomcat
export DSPACE_HOME=/usr/home/dspace/app/dspace
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/home/dspace/app/sqlplus
export TNS_ADMIN=/usr/home/dspace/app/sqlplus
export JAVA_OPTS="-Xmx2024M -Xms2024M -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8"

PATH=.:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$ANT_HOME/bin:$MAVEN_HOME/bin:$CATALINA_HOME/bin:$PATH:/usr/home/dspace/app/sqlplus
PATH=$PATH:$DSPACE_HOME/bin

/bin/date >> /tmp/mediafilter.log
/usr/home/dspace/app/dspace/bin/filter-media -v >> /tmp/mediafilter.log

It would be good to address this in the documentation
(http://www.dspace.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=152 --
see "cron jobs")

[Dspace-tech] Thumbnails created in shell/not created in cron job

2008-10-31 Thread Thomas A McGee
Following up on my earlier post, I was getting errors when running the
./filter-media command with the flags to only run the JPEGFilter. I tried
it again with no flags, and presto! thumbnails created. The librarians are
very happy with them.

OK, so then I check my crontab to see what's going on. Running from a
command line:
/usr/home/dspace/app/dspace/bin/filter-media -v

generates a nice page of results with a few warnings.

Setting a crontab entry according to the cookbook to:
5 2 * * * /usr/home/dspace/app/dspace/bin/filter-media -v >>
/tmp/mediafilter.log 2>&1

returns this mess to the output log file:

[Dspace-tech] Missing Collection Logos

2008-10-29 Thread Thomas A McGee
I've uploaded a collection logo, which appears if I look at the site on
the JSPUI side, but when I use the Manakin XMLUI it's missing.

The path to the image in the generated HTML is
http://repository.shu.edu:8080/xmlui/bitstream/id/402/?sequence=-1, which
when entered into a browser returns an error. The Cocoon stacktrace is:

context:/file://dspace/app/tomcat/webapps/xmlui/sitemap.xmap -
246:38

The Java stacktrace is, well, too long to copy here.

The relevant chunk of the sitemap.xmap code is:

Any help on understanding what's going on?

That's correct -- you need the full command, with the test flag thrown in
at the end. It's testing *everything* -- eperson, source, target -- which
is why you need to specify them.-

Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace-tech Digest, Vol 28, Issue 25

2008-08-12 Thread Thomas A McGee
Thanks Claudia and Dorothea! I got it to work now. It was the directory
structure that I was messing up on. The imported submissions all show up
now.

Is creating the contents and dublin_core.xml files manually to upload the
documents the bestway to do mass importing? We have a lot of documents to
import and were wondering if other people use the same method to do the
importing. I wonder if there's more automated way of doing the
importing...

Thanks!

Claudia: I have an Excel Spreadsheet with macros built in to it that
simplifies the process quite a bit. If you're interested, send me a
message and I'll forward a copy.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Dspace 1.5 cannot batch import

2008-08-12 Thread Thomas A McGee
A couple ideas: Can you copy-and-paste what's in your dublin_core.xml and
contents file, and post them here? Also, a quickie map of your directory
structure, similar to what Dorothea has given as an example?

Have you tried running the batch import with the "--test" flag set? Put it
at the end of the command-line string, and it's two dashes followed by
"test".

[Dspace-tech] Excel Batch Import Tool

2008-07-28 Thread Thomas A McGee
Speaking of making batch-importing more accessible, I've put together an
Excel spreadsheet that does a lot of the preparatory work. It was inspired
by the work the people at Nanyang Technological University had done, using
a spreadsheet that held the metadata and running it as a data source
through a Java application. My addition is to make it work completely
within Excel.

A user will build their directory structure and populate it with the
bitstreams:

parent directory
>>subdirectory
bitstream1.jpg
bitstream2.jpg
>>subdirectory
bitstream3.pdf

And then fill out the columns and rows of the spreadsheet corresponding to
each subdirectory. Run the macro, and the dublin_core.xml and contents
files are generated and put into their corresponding subdirectories.

If you'd like to take a look at this work-in-progress drop me a line and
I'll send it to you. I've only tested in on Excel 2003 running on XP.
There are still a lot of refinements I want to do to make it easier, and
also function things like handling bundles.

You still have to use the command-line tool; this just prepares the
necessary directory.

[Dspace-tech] DSpace goes to sleep

2008-07-14 Thread Thomas A McGee
Since we're not public yet there's only local test traffic on our
installation. We've found that after a period of inactivity (first thing
in the morning, for example) the system is unresponsive. The browser's
progress bar spins and after anywhere from five to twenty minutes the page
will come up. After that first page the system behaves normally. Using
Manakin, both the /jspui and the /xmlui sides showed the same problem, but
independently -- one might hang while the other didn't, or sometimes
neither would respond.

As an experiment I wrote a Perl script that requested each front page (the
/xmlui and the /jspui) every five minutes. With that running for a few
days, the system remained responsive all the time. When I turned it off,
the problem returned.

We're running 1.5 with Oracle on VMWare. That's more than enough in the
way of complications, I know -- but does anyone have any thoughts on where
to look next?

[Dspace-tech] jspui pages unresponsive

2008-06-03 Thread Thomas A McGee
Our Manakin pages (/xmlui/) come up right away, but the /jspui/ interface
hangs. It's not a consistent problem, but frequently enough to be
annoying. Has anyone seen this before, and is there a place we should be
looking for a solution? The default Tomcat home page also comes right up.

Using version 1.5 w/Oracle (which is why we need the JSP pages, for
administration).

[Dspace-tech] Best Practices for Journal Articles

2008-06-02 Thread Thomas A McGee
What's the best methodology for archiving individual articles within an
issue of a periodical? We'd like to have the metadata be more closely tied
to an individual author's work, as well as let users more easily find the
section they need. But we'd also like to keep the articles tied together
as part of a master entry which represents the entire issue.

What exactly is on lines 45 and 46? Unless you've changed the file, this
should compile with no issues. Is there a missing semicolon at the end
of the previous line?

cheers,

Jim

[Dspace-tech] Compiler error -- DIDLCrosswalk

2008-01-28 Thread Thomas A McGee
Installing 1.4.2 on Ubuntu, following the basic install directions.

The ant fresh_install command stops with this:

Buildfile: build.xml

compile:
[javac] Compiling 1 source file to
/home/mcgee/Desktop/dspace-source/dspace-1.4.2-source/build/classes
[javac]
/home/mcgee/Desktop/dspace-source/dspace-1.4.2-source/src/org/dspace/app/oai/DIDLCrosswalk.java:46:

'class' or 'interface' expected
[javac] import org.dspace.content.DCValue;
[javac] ^
[javac] 1 error

BUILD FAILED
/home/mcgee/Desktop/dspace-source/dspace-1.4.2-source/build.xml:125
etc.

I haven't been able to find anything like this on the support forums. If I
coment out the line before (import org.dspace.content.DCDate) it works,
but I doubt that's where I want to be.

Thanks.
