Re: [Dspace-tech] Item Permissions

2007-11-28 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hi,

This would be really great! Because my import script also creates
the contents file with the license and the location of the
publication. So I would only need to add one more line with the
permissions.

  I don't think it's available in dspace code. I'm using 1.4.2 and i
couldn't find any documentation regarding this issue or the meaning of
the -r flag. Is there a patch available for this version?

  Thank you!
Marcelo

Hi Marcelo,

It's possible to do this through the contents file that the ItemImport
uses.
Following each filename for the bitstream, try adding:
tabpermissions: -r 'Group name'

Our programmers added this a couple of years ago, but I am not positive
whether there was ever a patch to the general code base.  If it doesn't
work for you, I can try to find out how to get you the code.

 Hi Marcelo,

you can change the rights for an item and it's parts (bundles and
bitstreams). Each element got it's own rights. The settings are
derived
during ingest from the DEFAULT_ITEM_READ and DEFAULT_BITSTREAM_READ
of the
collection. Once an item is submitted it's rights are independent of
the
 owning collection.

To change the rights log in as admin, navigate to the item you want

rights.

If you want to change a set got to /dspace-admin and use the

I have tryied several options, but i think the read permission is

Re: [Dspace-tech] Google Analytics - How do you set up the Site Search tracking parameters

2007-11-15 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hi Mark,

I'm using Google Analytics for a few days now, and your mail came in
handy! I wasn't aware of that option to identify a search query.

So, yesterday, I've activated the Site Search, and added as a query
the word query, that is the name of the input box.

So, on yesterday's report, I was able to see all the search strings
that were made! And we can also see where was the origin request made.
Since every community/collection has a search box, this method is
excellent to understand where the search request was made. If it was
on simple or advanced search, or if it was inside a collection.

So, the item is query and it's the only one i use. But i only have a
one day experience with this Site Search, and i don't know if there's
another query parameters to configure. Does anyone else has any
experience to share with us?

  Marcelo Rodrigues

Hi,

Has anyone out there who's using Google Analytics on their DSpace
instances tried setting up the site search tracking (from within
the  Content section) and if so what are the Query Parameters that
need  to be entered to set it all up please?

Cheers,

[Dspace-tech] Same author, two names?

2007-09-21 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hello,

I have encountered an situation where a author may have different
types of writing his name. Sometimes the name is not complete on the
publication and other times he only uses the first and the last name.

Imagine this case:
John Grant Wood
John G. Wood
John Wood

Despite of all these three names belonging to the same person, I
cannot insert this as author in Dspace, because search by author would
show 3 different persons.

So, as author, I will always use it's full name, but users may want to
do a search like John Wood, and this obviously will fail.  I would
like to add this (let's call it) author publication name,  as a
metadata, but I would also like to keep the dublin_core schema.

Does dublin_core predicts this situation?  I would really like to keep
the actual schema in pure dulin_core to avoid future interoperability
issues between dspace instances.

Thanks
Marcelo

Re: [Dspace-tech] Help - is automatic group membership possible ?

2007-08-02 Thread mfrodrigues

I forgot to answer to the list. here goes the reply:

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is possible for users who are

authorized by LDAP and auto-registered by DSpace to be automatically added
to a group in DSpace at the same time as they are registered.

  You are almost right ;)

Is this possible with LDAP authentication?

As far as i know, it isn't supported in LDAP auth method.

If yes, is this also possible with RADIUS authentication??

But, its supported on the Radius auth! We needed an automatic
method to add people to certain groups, and since we were building
RADIUS we thought that we should make it as practical as possible.

So, we support auto_add feature. Let me explain how it works:

When it reads the Radius answer, it looks for an radius filed
called Reply-Message. If you have Group_TEST=yes in the radius
answer to that user, he will be added to the group TEST. If you have
Group_TEST=no, the user will be removed from that group.

note: you need to create the group by hand. It was an failsafe
option we made, the have control of all groups.

All logs are escaped to general dspace.conf

Re: [Dspace-tech] Reply-To Header missing - list misconfigured?

2007-07-28 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hello!

I also found this very strange, but i never complaint because the
Horde Webmail  has a nice feature, called Reply to List, that i use
very often. Marcelo

  Quoting Christian Voelker [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Hello,

as I am actively following the list these days
I am slightly annoyed with the header settings
of the list. I have got the feeling that they
are misconfigured as they are. Prove me wrong
if I havent got the list policy right, but that
is how it looks to me right now.

Other *discussion* lists (as opposed to *announce-
ment* lists) I am actively participating in have
the reply-to header set to the list address.
Dspace-tech does not have a reply-to header and
the from-line is not rewritten to the list address
(and should not be). I have searched the list
archive whether this had been discussed before
and I am really astonished that I couldnt find
anything and that everybody seems to be happy.

The result of a missing reply-to header is that
you have to use the reply-all function of your
mail client to answer back to the list, which
seems unnatural. In most cases, answers seem
to be sent in private mail as implied by the
missing header.

As of my perception, this makes the list *more*
noisy as required and renders the list archive
less useful. Let me explain.

If I answer simple questions that I feel capable
to answer properly right now to help others that
start using DSpace, I sometimes get replies such
as thank you, but three others told me the same
before. So three people have spent time and
thought on helping beginners. What a waste.

These answers start to discourage me from answering
questions older then an hour or two, although I might
be one of the few people reading the list at that
time because I am living in the european time gap
between the user groups in Asia an America.

None of the three answers went to the list archive.
The same question will pop up on the list again
some days later. You cant simply point somebody
to the list archive as usual, because it does
not contain the knowledge present on the list.

If I see a disclosure triangle besides a new
post in the threaded view of my mailer, I dont
bother to answer or read a question unless I am
interested to learn about the subject myself.
Most questions seem to remain unheard though.
You dont know, whether they are or not. In some
cases, they get reposted on dspace-general, which
is the time you know that nobody took care of them.

Motivation to participate actively in a list might
be different, but sometimes philantropy and selfish-
ness come along with each other. Being visible on
the web in a list archive demonstrates a certain
level of knowledge and involvement. This could foster
a kind of competition to be the first to answer and
help every participant to get quick responses.

Last thing. When I forgot to hit reply-all, I
sometimes resend it to the list when I feel it
is worth it. Today I learned that this doesnt
cure the issue as intended. The answer is not
contained in the threaded view in the archive
then. I would have to reply with reply-all a
second time, copying the former answer to the
new message to retain the right message id.

I hope it was not too lengthy and boring. Please
tell me if I have misunderstood some basic concept
of this list.

Bye, Christian

[Dspace-tech] Handle Server - passphrase

2007-07-28 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hello!

Thank you Christian. I've checked previous replies regarding to
this subject.

The problem is that in boot time there is no way to set this
password, but shouldn't we look for a solution, instead of removing
this feature?

  My question is:
We could use the expect (EXPECT.nist.gov/) to enter this password
in a script. But since the password would be in a script, it probably
is the same as removing the passphrase? Or is there a slight difference?

  Thanks,
Marcelo

So you have entered a passphrase where shouldnt have.

However, I don't see any instructions in the documentation on how
to provide passphrase to handle server.

Thats the reason why you should not use a passphrase.
No chance to enter it at boot time. Sorry.

I dont know the steps how to remove the passphrase
but encryption uses standard algorithms and there
should be some tool around to remove the passphrase
(given that you still know it). I would search for
it in the openssl suite of tools. This would save
you from creating a new sitebundle and bothering
CNRI people. Hope, this helps.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Having A Sub-Community Collection appear in 2 Communities?

2007-07-20 Thread mfrodrigues

  Hello,

Yes, in fact, the delete issue is the most important.

Let me explain what happens in my case. Lets suppose this
Communities example:

  -
Books (community)
   =Comedy (sub-community)
Magazines (community)
    =Sport (sub-community)
    =Comedy (sub-community)
-

If i try to delete Books or Magazines entire community I get a
PSQLException, which makes sense, because of the foreign key constraint.

But, when deleting only Comedy-Magazines, will cause the deletion
of Comedy, but in Books category. So, only removes the reference to
the first father. Comedy still remains, but this time like this:

  -
Books (community)
Magazines (community)
   =Sport (sub-community)
   =Comedy (sub-community)
-

When deleting for Comedy for the second time, since there is no other
father, the delete is successfully made.

So, i would not advise this little hack unless anyone is using
stable communities with very little changes in its structure. But any
comments and opinions would be appreciated!

  Marcelo

  Quoting Richard Rodgers [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Hi Marcelo:

The sub-community functionality was designed as a single-parent
model. I'd need to study the code/DB schema to see what potential
problems there may be, but one question springs to mind immediately:

What behavior do you want when (one of) the parents is deleted?
Normally DSpace deletes everything below a community (sub-communities,
collections, etc) I assume you would want any sub-community that has
more than one parent to *not* be deleted. Is this true with your
modified code?

Thanks,

Richard R

[Dspace-tech] Dspace as metadata harvester?

I was wondering if it's possible for Dspace to have a collection
imported from another OAI repository? Because I need only one

In concrete terms, i would like to know if Dspace can also act as a
metadata harvester?

Does anyone know if Dspace is somehow prepared for this?

Thanks,

  Hello!

Unfortunately the documentation is in Portuguese, but i plan to
translate the entire documentation to English in a few days.

The software you have downloaded only accepts PAP and CHAP
authentication. I've made major changes and i will provide a new
module till the end of this month. This new module now accepts PAP,
CHAP, MSCHAv1, MSCHAPv2 and EAP-TTLS requests.

This module is not (yet) available on the project page because is
in a beta state. However i can send it by e-mail!

The new module will have installation instructions in English. All the
configuration is made in dspace.conf general config file and all the
logs are sent to the general log file. The installation method was
simplified to just a few lines.

I can send this new module to anyone, and i will be glad to give
some support or explain its features.

Hi

I came across the RAM - RADIUS authentication module on the DSpace wiki.

This is just what we need, but the documentation is all in Portuguese?

Has anyone implemented this and can explain in English what needs to be done?

Thanks very much

Clive

Hi

I came across the RAM - RADIUS authentication module on the DSpace wiki.

This is just what we need, but the documentation is all in Portuguese?

Has anyone implemented this and can explain in English what needs to be done?

Thanks very much

Clive
