Re: [DX-CHAT] [DX-News] FR/E - Comments

2003-11-28 Thread Osten B Magnusson

Hi Larry and others !

Maybe the negative comments are due to the fact that nothing
about the ''off-air'' times is mentioned on the TO4E WEB-site?
There is a very large ''time-table'' on this site with information
on the best times to work them from different areas on different
bands covering 24 hours. Also, even I, beeing a European, have
some problem understanding the informations from F5CQ, first
I thought that the meaning of not ''having energy'' for 24/24 was
that they were too tired...

Myself I'm waiting for TO4E to show up on 80, don't think we will
have propagations on 160, but it's going to be difficult if they
have to close down every day at 19.45 UTC.

I'm not negative to the operation, the CW-operators seem to
be very good, I have not listened on SSB. But I feel that it's wrong
to have a WEB-site with in-correct information. There could easily
be a ''news'' update on that site every day in an understandable
langauge.

I as well as you have seen numerous negative comments on
FR/E on the cluster nets. Many of you have stepped up to the plate with
bat
to refutiate these negative comments. The FR/E Team thanks you for this.

This time of year, daytime temperatures on Europa approach
 120 - 130 Deg F in the shade.

Hi Larry:

I'm sure it's very hot and uncomfortable there, but let's not
exaggerate - the high temperatures are in the 80s, with very high humidity -
check out the link from the TO4E website -
http://english.wunderground.com/global/stations/61972.html
Temperatures in maritime environments rarely get as hot as temps in the
interior of land masses, because of the moderating effect of the ocean. And
yes, I do have a degree in Atmospheric Sciences ! That said, a dew point of
79 degrees F is awfully high !
They were loud on 20 SSB, and I got through fairly quickly with my 3 element
up 60 feet...

I am trying to download v2.70 to my new computer

I have tried various ways to download it but all

Any ideas?

I think part of the frustration is the chosen operation times. They
start after the bands have closed for guys West of the Rockies and QRT
before the bands have opened. I have yet to hear them anywhere since
they've been there. It's roughly a 10,000 mile path here and the window
is fairly small, although very possible on 20m between 0100-0300z.

It looks like guys from Texas east along the Gulf Coast and up along the
Eastern seaboard are not having any problems. I've even seen a few
Midwest guys work them, but for anybody in CO, WY and West if they keep to
the same schedule, I'm afraid this might be a total loss - which is really
a shame for such a rare one.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed they do indeed operate 24/7 in the CQWW,
that will at least give us a chance, otherwise my gut feeling is we won't
have a chance.

Kelly really a nice signal from them again this morning on 40 meters. I
worked them there yesterday and hear many left coasters nailing him this
morning.

Rod,

Yet, I've seen the spots, unfortunately it's nearly 2hrs past sunrise
here. If they have been there an hour earlier, maybe a chance. Colorado
seems to be in the in between world. Another instance of wrong band,
wrong time. Very frustrating.

Was just browsing through the TO4E Guestbook and saw this recent entry:

For the English speaking: F5OGL said that turtles are laying eggs near the
station and by all means they must not be disturbed. Any noise during the
night is not possible thus. Please understand and don't comment with
anything like poor operation etc. You will have enough opportunity to work
them during the contest and till December 15 or 16. My highest respect !
