[DX-CHAT] VK2FDU on the air

2007-05-18 Thread Carol Chris Brett

Hi Everyone,

Just a note to say that the FISTS Down Under club call (VK2FDU) will be on
the air these next two weeks starting NOW. Experience of late shows that
the bands and times for us down under are:

to Europe 30m 0530Z-0700Z 20m 0500Z-0700Z
to USA40m 1100Z and later
Local VK on 40 and 80 as appropriate.

Please listen out for the call on the usual freqs and on the bottom ends of
30m and 40m as I quite often find whilst writing up my logs and QSL cards
that I work many a FISTS member at the bottom end of these bands but miss
exchanging FISTS numbers.

The club call sign will be VK2FDU/3 as it will be operated in VK3 (the
state of Victoria) whilst it is a VK2 (state of NSW) call sign. Very
confusing but these days I doubt there are many (if any) persons in The
Australian Federal Regulatory body who can read CW. But we will do it
correctly.

Look forward to catching up with a few members

How did they figure the US zones - by call sign which isn't too
accurate now. My friend a W4 worked BS7H but he lives in 9 land -
did his contact count as a 4 land contact - I am sure that it did. I
wonder how many Zone 5 and Zone 4 calls are resident in Zone 3?

Yes, by number in the call. One hopes that the number of
out-of-zone callsigns balance each other out. I.e. for every W6 who
lives in Zone 5, there is a W1 somewhere who lives in Zone 3.

I believe it's much more likely that a W1/2 lives in zone 3 than W6/7 in
zone 5. The population trend in the US has been flight from the NE to
the SW for a number of years now.

Looks like I was off by 5%... I figured 10% of Zone 5 calls weren't
actually in Zone 5.

Still a pretty good distribution across N.A.

[DX-CHAT] YW0DX

2007-05-18 Thread Mark Robinson
After reading the fuss about the disallowed BS7H dxpedition where they
operated on scaffolding on the reef I started to look at the YW0DX photos.
This station was operated from the base which sits on stillts (expensive
scaffolding) set out over the water. A few of the anttennas were set on the
island but several were set on the base. The only part of the base that
touches the island is a set of steps which leads to a long walkway which
leads to the base on stills sticking out of the ocean.

What is the difference between the banned BS7H setup and the YW0DX setup?
