Re: [DX-CHAT] Honor Roll

2009-01-07 Thread DAVE WHITE
However, make the honor roll with 150 watts and a dipole..

Or do so from Northern Europe where signals are many dB down and openings are
always shorter in than in Southern Europe.  Also we have to break through the
wall of Italians and their chaotic
random-calling-till-doomsday-for-maximum-QRM technique in order to work
anything.

cheers

Amen Dan!!! Nobody cares except the guys who achieved HR
and 5BDXCC.

  Making the
honor roll is like building a 3 BR Ranch House: given enough time and the
proper

tools, virtually anyone could do it. Upon completion, only family members
will notice. However, make

the honor roll with 150 watts and a dipole and you will bask in the
sunshine of almost everyone.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Re: Honor Roll, etc.

2009-01-07 Thread RUSSELL KELLAM JR
Good comments John. Especially about 5BWAZ. There's
folks sitting with 199 zones who have been there for years
waiting for Zone 26, 32 etc. on 80 meters. I have HR DXCC
and very close to 5BDXCC but I won't live long enough to get 5BWAZ. 73 Russ

  Couple of comments.

I found it interesting to plot my progress toward HR on a semi-log chart, vs
time. There are two very distinct phases. Up to 260 countries (say) is one
slope, above that there's an inflexion point to a significantly lower rate.
Reason : Up to 260, there are always new ones on the bands available to work.
Your progress is determined by how much time you're willing to waste on the
chase! Above that, it's out of your control - You have to wait for new ones to
get QRV.

Second comment : DXCC with its Honor Roll are rightly respected as the
granddaddy of the major DX awards. But it (and 5BDXCC) are certainly not the
toughest. That distinction goes to 5BWAZ.

[DX-CHAT] Goal Orientation

2009-01-07 Thread Urb LeJeune

Your progress is determined by how much time you're willing to waste
on the chase!

I certainly would call the pursuit a waste of time. Any
positive thing you do contribute
to your self esteem. The more difficult the task the greater the self
esteem. I'm run many
marathons and I'll never win an award. When ask why I do it more than
once I reply with.

because I feel so good about myself when I cross the finish line.

However, pursue these goals because they make you feel good,
not to impress other

people.

Re: [DX-CHAT] UP machine

2009-01-07 Thread Dan Zimmerman N3OX
I haven't worked many Asian stations recently.

Yep.

I was lucky to get the last VU7 and BS7 operations when there was a little
 sunspot activity (not much).

I couldn't get the BS7. I heard them for a grand total of 1/2 hour on SSB
and I'm only 100W a 20m Moxon (which I actually built to work them ;-) ).
I called anyway but no joy.

VU7 was another story. I snagged VU7RG on day 1 on 40m CW right before
sunset. Turns out propagation between here and VU7 is really fantastic.
They were very loud. I got a 17m QSO a few days later.

But VU4 is a much more polar path from here and I couldn't hear them at all
even though I heard the more recent VU7 a little. Totally different world.

But I only worked a couple JA's in CQWW CW. And they were tough to work.

Yeah. I heard a DU on 40CW longpath the other day but couldn't make it
through. Not much hope for, say, that V8 or XX9 that I still need or
whatever.

The upcoming KP5 operation should be an easy one hopefully, for those of us
 in the USA.

Should be a good one for a lot of folks. I have a N3KS/KP5 card sitting
here from a really lucky break when I was living in an apartment ;-)

There's a good chance that KP5 will be my #99 or #100 on topband though
but that's going to be CRAZY.

Dan
