[DX-CHAT] BS7H on 80M
They had a good signal into Colorado this morning. I heard several Stateside stations from CA to MN get through so they were being heard all over the western US. I hope they have as good a signal on 160M because now I think we stand a chance of hearing them on this band. It will probably be late in the DXpedition before they try TOP though. We have also been able to hear them easily on 20 and 17M so prop seems to favor this area. Haven't listened for them on 40M yet. 73, Charlie, W0YG.. Re: [DX-CHAT] LoTW versus paper, etc.
On top of everything that has been said, there is no mention of the overhead that any DXpedition faces if immediately uploading logs to LoTW and that is busted calls. The upkeep to unsnarl this would be immense. I for one don't want that hassle so I NEVER upload logs for at least a year if then. If there is a busted call in a log and one is forced to use LoTW, which is quite awkward to use in my opinion, one corrects it in their DXpedition log and then uploads that one Q to LoTW. It doesn't replace the busted call, only resides alongside the busted call. This seems quite awkward to me. That's my 2 cents worth on top of every else's input. It is just that this perhaps had not been throught of when suggesting a DXpedition be forced to use LoTW. Before someone jumps on me with both feet, I know, there are not supposed to be busted calls in a log. Well let me point out one that always catches me. How about OK2BW and OK2BWK. That is a tough one as it could go either way. A busted call is a fact of life for a DXpedition, guaranteed! I do agree with the two previous posters general comments. Do not do away with paper QSLs! 73, Charlie.. [DX-CHAT] DXpedition antennas
I hope this is an appropriate place to list some antennas that I have that were either used on DXpeditions or brand new waiting for another DXpedition. I have done my DXpeditions and think I will retire so I am going to offer them on a forum that has DXers/DXpeditioners as subscribers. First is a five band SpiderBeam that is brand new and complete with gobs of spare parts as well as a 38 foot push up mast (I believe it is the 38 foot model but it could be the 34 foot model, both same price). This has been assembled because that is necessary to make all the guys and elements prior to going on a DXpedition. It was assembled on the ground, tested, and placed back in a box ready to go out but it never did. It is brand new. The mast is a heavy duty push up mast. You will have to supply some sort of rope guys as well as stakes. I never got that far! It is one heavy duty aluminum mast. The items can be checked on an airplane on a golf bag with cover or in one of the hard sided golf bag protectors. I want $750.00 for this antenna with spares. You ship, I box. I also have a K9AY special 160/80/75M antenna that comes in a gun case. I used this antenna in Namibia in 1995 but it has just sat around since them. It is compact and amazing in its performance. Changing bands is done with with a hairpin (trombone) tuning rod and/or by moving the guys which have the tophat closer or farther from the antenna. I want $275.00 for this one, again you ship. I also have a nice full size telescoping 40M 1/4 wave vertical complete with everything except small rope guys. This antenna is direct feed, no need for a match. It can actually be used on any frequency from 40 to 10M just by telescoping it down to the proper height. I made up some pre-cut radials that I will include. They just bolt with an eyelug to the base of the antenna. I have it currently packed in a 2 PVC tube with caps on each end. Easy to travel with this way. $275.00 plus you ship. Last, I have an approximate 40 foot telescoping light duty aluminum mast also in PVC tubing with caps. I used this for inverted Vs when I was restricted to wire antennas. The top section has been reinforced with a wooden dowel that was driven inside. A pulley at the top will allow one to pull up any wire antenna selected but I would definitely recommend RG-8X or similar size coax to keep from overloading the pole. Of course it could be guyed in several places to prevent it from bending over in the direction of the pulley if heavier coax were to be used. I want $125.00 for this piece including all clamps and hardware. As I indicated, I hate to divest myself of these items but it is time to move on. All items are shipped at the buyers expense. 73, Charlie..

Re: [DX-CHAT] [dx-list] KH8SI
Yes, there are better CW operators on the Swain's Island DXpedition but it seems to be a mystery as to why they don't seem to be operating. K1ER can handle anything on a key but all I have heard him on is phone. Since I am not there, I cannot comment on much from that end, instead just try to make the best of it. John is on 75 phone as I write this. This is JA1BK's show. He probably footed the bill for the whole DXpedition. He is allowed to call the shots! Re: [DX-CHAT] How do we make better DXers?
Maybe they started there with the advent of clusters but it has been going on for ages over here. It was frustrating and sad to listen to the KH8SI and 4O3T pileups this weekend (mostly SSB). When the DX station says, The station with 7 in the call, ending in Germany why do unrelated calls from all over the country continue to call? When the DX station comes back to a full callsign, why does the pileup size diminish only by half, rather than all but one? It makes it impossible for a better DXer to find the station being worked because so many others are still calling. The rate of these DX stations is being hindered by out-of-turn callers. When the rate is hindered, fewer people can work the DX station. Especially limited-time operations like KH8SI. It made me sad to be a DXer this weekend. My QSO with KH8SI on 17 meters took THREE go-arounds because they could not get my call (presumably because of all the people still calling). That's TWO MORE possible QSOs that were wasted by the out-of-turn callers. OUT-OF-TURN CALLERS ARE SETTING A BAD EXAMPLE, RUINING IT FOR THEMSELVES AND EVERYONE ELSE! 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
Re: [DX-CHAT] How do we make better DXers?
I totally agree with what Dan says BUT it just doesn't work that way. I have made plenty of DXpeditions, none to a place I had to stay in a tent in 100+degree weather or wear a jacket so heavy I could barely move. When you say the CV station only, many guys still call. OK, you say again, the CV only. Now a few less call but they still are QRMing the QRG. You say again the CV only. Now a few less call. Finally you get the station, F2CV or N0CV or whoever, but it wasn't because guys quit calling. It was because a few savvy DXers understood you were coming back to one station only and finally stood by. I personally will never leave a call if I get a partial. Rate be damned! I have seen this behavior time after time. I don't think there is anything one can do to get this across to the masses. As the DX, I just keep at it and never vary. If your call is CV, you are going to get in the log! Now, that being said, when working a JA pileup, it can be a thing of beauty but sometimes this even bites you. You come back to a weak weak ABJ and give a report and you hear ABJ come back, weak as water but hearable because the other JA's stood by. However, to get ABJ to send his call twice or three times is like pulling dragon's teeth. The JA stations are so polite that JA9ABJ doesn't want to run the risk of QRMing JA1ABJ. None of this will stop me from going out again. Look for me from VK9C in October/November this year. That's how it goes! 73, Charlie, W0YG.. - Original Message - From: Dan Zimmerman N3OX [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Sunday, July 30, 2006 4:10 PM Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] How do we make better DXers? The DX just has to be strict about who gets to get through. The pileup should be held up until WK7 gets to get through, or the DX says the whiskey kilo seven please and is met with silence. Yeah, QSO rate may plummet, but that's just what has to happen to keep the pileup in line. I'm in favor of the DX giving specific instructions to keep the pileup in line. I've worked some hard ones on 30m because the DX sent UP 17 instead of just UP and three-quarters of the pile didn't follow. The more the DX can reward the good, skilled, and polite DXer with the contact at the expense of the brute-force jerks, the better the pileups will get.
