Re: [DX-CHAT] QSL costs

2005-07-20 Thread Ron Notarius
Jan,

Funny you haven't picked up on this before, as this is a regular post from
Bill (as you know) over on the DX QSL reflector.

Nevertheless, don't shoot the messenger... in other words, Bill's data is
only as good as what was sent to him. If someone gave him bad information
(using a busted call no less) and he's had no corrections or updates, he has
no way of knowing the information is bad.

I'm copying Bill on this reply so that he's aware of this discrepancy. Can
you get him the correct information on current acceptance of IRC's in SM so
that he can bring his listings up to date?

Strange. This W9OL list states IRC not accepted for
 Sweden.
My post office in town sure accepts them so go figure.
Guess I don´t beleive W9OL, besides he got the source
wrong, SM4DQC is a broken call!!

This is the cost for Sweden:
1.35 Dollar or 1.08 Euro or 1 IRC

That means, people sending Dollar
bills need to send 2 Dollars.

1 Euro bill or 1 IRC is OK with me!!

Or the bureau is also fine but ofcourse
slow.

If someone still needs a cards for my
operations in SV5 SV9 CT3 and CN2KM
I will be happy to confirm, right now
all QSL requests are answered.

I still have logs and QSL´s for these
old calls: SM2DWH/S2 G5BHX GU5BHX and
F0GUU

Is there a website somewhere with all this info for the various countries
collected together in one place? I'd do it myself but I'm so busy these
days I have a hard time just keeping up with the e-mail.

Yes, W9OL has one. Here's a clip from his latest post on the issue:

Creating and modifying the old text based IRC/GS Chart became difficult.

We have taken a new approach.

I've created two new forms.
One in Excel format for download.
http://www.qsl.net/w9ol/IRC_Chart.xls

and
Same design but ported to .htm
http://www.qsl./w9ol/IRC_Chart.htm

For the time being, I'll keep the old http://www.qsl.net/w9ol/ircchart.txt
available but it will go in the future as the .xls format is a lot easier
to maintain.

I'd appreciate it if the Non USA hams would check the info as it seems to
change much quicker than I get updates.
Please check the notes sections also as them may not be pertinent any
longer.

Please and thank you

I don't keep track of how the cards get to me, just
IF they get to me.

If I send for a card - bureau, manager or direct -
I expect a reply. And I don't care how the reply comes in.

And if an IRC or 2 or 3 or 4 will not cover air
mail, I have no trouble with the bureau or surface mail.JUST SO IT

Charlie,

I think any US ham should send any DX ham FIVE US DOLLARS
freely if he wants a card back. Can we be so cheap otherwise?
No one is gonna get rich at ham radio, believe me.

If u disagree with me, please walk in the shoes of DX ops of
 modest means; then decide. 73

I doubt that anyone is going to complain about a little bit
extra to help out needy hams in the most underdeveloped
countries. However, this thread started because a VK manager
refuses to handle bureau cards and is asking for a $2 premium
above the $2 (actually $1.35 US at current exchange rates) is
actually costs to return a card.

For managers in Europe, VK/ZL, the USA, VE ... even some of
the leading developing nations of South America to behave
that way is unacceptable. Not every DX-er is made of money
- many even in the USA are retired and on fixed incomes.
The round trip cost of a traditional QSL (card, two envelopes,
postage, two green stamps) is more than $3.00 and that's not
a throw away for some.

Re: [personal] [DX-CHAT] QSL costs

2005-07-18 Thread KIR
I disagree. First, some people have tried to get rich at ham radio. How
successful they were is debatable, but certainly no one would argue that
none have tried. Second, In trying to walk in the shoes of DX ops of modest
means I believe I would be content and happy to send out thousands of QSL
cards so long as I zeroed out the cost of making the cards and return
postage. I say this as a US op of modest means. To me, and I'm sure to many
other hams QSLing is a pleasurable and integral part of ham radio. Those who
consider it a chore and send a card only if they receive more than the cost
of sending one should be scorned. lastly, some old ideas are still viable.
If I send a card to a DX station with sufficient return postage attached I
do expect a card in return. This expectation is based on my own set of ham
radio values instilled in me for over 50 years. Why screw around with
traditions that have served us well for so long? It's up to the new ops to
adjust to our hobby's traditions and values not the other way around.

Charles, You're a fine guy but I would not try to shame your fellow hams nor
try to establish standards based on your own set of values. We are all
different and entitled to practice our hobby in our own way. What you do is
your business. Enough said. 73.

[DX-CHAT] QSL Costs

2005-07-18 Thread Mike Mattes
One of the most irritating things in QSLing is the DX op who complains about
theft in his country's postal system yet never gets a manager in another
country with a more secure postal system. One has to wonder if such stations
aren't DXing for dollars. If they're not, then they should either tell
stations to 1)not send cards or 2)get a manager as mentioned above.
