Read several comments about their card and today received mine... You are
right, that is one class act card...

Must have cost somebody big bucks

Nice , with glossy picture cards. But I tend to agree, it must add
considerately to the cost.
Is it worth it when it makes no difference for DXCC ?

Amen to that Dick. LOTW will never replace the QSL card in your hot little
fist. Especially since they somewhat personalize the QSO and so many of the
QSLs are unique and show some of the culture/geography of the country. 73

I don't know - I agree with Pete - LOTW is fine. In fact, I'll go
one step further - I PREFER LOTW. Why? QSL cards are clutter - I
have more than enough clutter. I look at inbound cards long enough to
log them into my PC, and I toss them in my desk - when I have had to
apply for something, I sort them for the needed award, and I'm done -
I'll probably NEVER look at them

That said, I send out a nice full color card that I have gotten
unsolicited complements back about. If your going to send a card make
it NICE - but I prefer LOTW

place of a real cardeven if it was made from a post it notepad. 1500

RE: Fwd: RE: [DX-CHAT] 3Y0X

2006-05-13 Thread Ron Notarius WN3VAW
Well you have to remember, you're dealing with two or more different schools
of thought here.

There are those who collect QSL cards or equivalent merely as a means to an
end, usually qualifying for an award (DXCC, WAS, WAZ, IOTA, WPX, etc.) For
many of these amateurs, storing the physical cards are a nuisance, and for
these, LotW is well suited. (To say nothing of the cost savings in not
having to print mail QSL cards, make SASE's, buy or trade for IRC's, etc.)

Then there are those who collect QSL's for their own sake, for their
intrinsic beauty, and so forth. For these, LotW is unnecesary -- because
the QSL card isn't a means to an end, it is the end.

LotW will never completely replace QSL cards, _nor_ _was_ _it_ _ever_
_intended_ _too_. It is a merely a supplement to them.

[DX-CHAT] 3Y0X - 40M CW 15 Feb 06

2006-02-15 Thread Larry, K4WLS
0200 - 0530 UTC: WOW what a difference !!! QRG: ~ 7.021 MHz

Good CONDX and skip long.
Some stns calling on his QRG, but not as many as before.
The key-down intentional QRM on QRG was only present after
~ 0400 UTC and was of short duration just a few times.
Signal peaked to 599 here at 0205 UTC and stayed S9 for
~ 30 Mins. About - S2 of slow QSB.

3Y0X was monitoring his QRG and sending at ~ 28 WPM.
Quite a few times he sent AS AS QRM QRM HI, went QRT for
a few Mins then sent CQ CQ DE 3Y0X UP. Great !!!
The QSO rate was much better than on eve of 14 Feb UTC.
3Y0X Op had pretty good ears. For me he had to !!

Worked at 0239 UTC after CLG for ~ 30 Mins. My QRG was in
the clear (as far as I could hear) and 1.2 KHz above 3Y0X QRG.
Many TKS to the BIG OP in SKY. Was running 90W to H.B.
1/4 wave vertical. 3Y0X was S8 HRE. Gave me a 559, well he
was giving all 559 or 599 :-)

I kept my QRG 800 HZ to 2.6 KHz just above his QRG which
was on the lower end of the throng. The throng was following
his last QSO freq which was ~ 1 Khz to 20 KHz above his
QRG. I waited for 3Y0X to come to me on lower end of throng.

My W6ELProp has been right on the money. I did, however,
change my reference signal level to .10 uV versus the Default
of .50 uV to account for the sensitivity of the RCVR in my
IC-765. I did this by adding 10 db in the Additive Signal Constant
section of the setup. I also added 6 db for bands they are
using the StepIR's and 9 db for their linears. I also changed
the W6ELProp setup for a Minimun Radiation Angle of 5 Deg
being optomistic for my verticals rather than the Default setting
of 1 Deg - jeez an ant must be up 5 wavelengths to achieve
any significant radiation at this angle. Doing this gives me a
wider band opening window.

If you would like to know how to customize W6ELProp for
your stn power and ants, and the ants and power being used
by a DXpedition, go to the www.mdxa.org home page and
click on the Customize W6ELProp link.

VY 73 and GL on 40M - you will need it like me, Larry - K4WLS

Nick -- three of my four QSOs with them are in the online log; the
fourth took place after the as of date of the log. If by any
chance you're portable you may want to include that info in your
search. For example, my SSB QSOs are under KL0S/W4 and my CW QSO
required a search for KL0S/4. Failing that methodology and if your
QSOs precede the as of date I'd probably work 'em again just in case.
