Re: [DX-NEWS] East Timor

2003-08-15 Thread John Warren
There was one significant item which showed up as the transition from
UNTAET to Timor Leste occurred.

For a short while (a few months? - I don't remember the dates), Thor
4W6MM was inadvertently operating without a valid UN license. As soon
as he found out he went QRT until he got his new government license.
I assume any QSOs he made during that period will not be good for
DXCC.

Re: [DX-NEWS] South Orkneys on CW

2002-12-20 Thread John Warren
Has anyone talked LU1ZA into going to CW?
Or, is there another on CW op there or is anyone who operates CW scheduled
to go to S. Orkney?
TIA
Bill W5EC

Bill,

The supply ship goes there in about a month. They will be changing
ops - Jose is leaving, Hannibal arriving (don't know his home call).
So maybe you'll get lucky. Also Henry LU4DXU, an experienced
DXer/contester, will be on the ship, so he'll be there for a few
weeks.

Gary,

There are currently 335 DXCC entities, so Honor Roll requires, at most, 326.

Anyway, anyone heard a Crozet station operating the past few days?
I found nothing on the cluster.

Haven't heard Crozet for quite a while. Let's see if anyone else has.

Bill:

WHAT A NICE FEELING

I had that feeling many years ago. I really understand how do you
feel. CONGRATULATIONS TWICE:

1. For the HONOR ROLL obtained.
2. For made it in, probably the best mode... CW

This is a hobby. The BEST mode is the one you enjoy the most. If for
you that's CW - great! But please understand that for others the BEST
mode is RTTY, SSB, SSTV, etc. ...and congratulations to Bill

[DX-NEWS] Date of AC4YN Obituary

2002-04-13 Thread John Warren

Several of you asked for the date of the London Times obituary of AC4YN.
It was last Saturday, April 6, in The Register section. I'm sure it
can be accessed on-line at the Times website.

[DX-NEWS] ex-AC4YN SK

2002-04-12 Thread John Warren

Just read a wonderful half-page obituary from The Times of London for
Sir Evan Nepean, G5YN, ex-AC4YN, who died March 11, at age 92. For
all youngsters reading this, AC4 was originally the prefix for Tibet,
not North Carolina or Florida. AC4YN was very active from 1936-1939,
and may have been the only pre WW II station QRV from the independent
nation of Tibet (any REAL OTs confirm that?).

Amazingly, despite his many varied accomplishments, amateur radio is
the key aspect of the obituary. It leads: Evan Nepean was one of the
most respected amateur radio enthusiasts in the country . At the
time of his death, he was the longest-serving member of the Radio
Society of Great Britain, having been a member for 75 years. Nepean
was famous in amateur radio circles throughout the world for his
callsign, G5YN.

And later: Nepean took to Lhasa a transmitter built in the signals
regiment's workshops at Rawalpindi, and a privately built
receiver. He also used his personal amateur callsign, which was
AC4YN - AC4 standing for Tibet, and YN from his English callsign,
since there was no regulating authority there.

This and all his official radio equipment was carried across the
14,600ft Natu La pass from India into Tibet by a party of 50 men and
25 pack animals. En route it was dropped into a river and had to be
largely rebuilt. The 120lb battery charging engine wouldn't work at
Tibet's high altitude, so some of the party returned to India to
build a hand-cranked charger, which was then carried back to Tibet in
the same fashion.

Great stuff!

John, NT5C.

Ken,

If you REALLY want those cards, I'd invest in going direct!

I think there's a distinction between Russia/Ukraine, etc, and the
more western east European countries (ES, LY, SP, YL, etc). The
former are still a bit dicey (but getting much better), the latter
are reasonably reliable.

Usual rules apply: $2 well hidden between your QSL and SAE, no
callsigns on the envelopes, business look safest - computer printed
label and metered stamp.

GL!

Re: [DX-NEWS] yt1ad - p5 license

2002-02-24 Thread John Warren

Steve KZ2I reported:

FROM 425 NEWS:
Hrane/YT1AD confirms that he has a licence and that he and
Voja/YU7AV will be visiting North Korea in March [425DXN 556].
They will arrive on 5 March around 16 local time. If they
operate, he says, the QSL manager will be YU7AV. [TNX YT1AD]

I wonder if they have submitted it to ARRL yet to verify that it will be
accepted for DXCC. Am I the only one that thinks that would be a good idea
if they already have it in hand??

No, you're not the only one Steve! One day last week I asked Bill
Moore if he'd seen anything yet. Answer: No. So I guess we'll have
another WFWL on our hands.

[DX-NEWS] JD1 Minami Torishima?

2002-01-14 Thread John Warren

A question for any Japanese readers:

There's quite a lot of JD1 activity these days from Ogasawara, but
very little from Minami Torishima - especially on the low bands. Is
there any activity from Minami right now? Any expected in the near
future? By a low-band DXer?

Thanks and 73,

[DX-NEWS] DX World Map

2001-12-29 Thread John Warren

It's not too difficult to find maps with DXCC country prefixes and/or
CQ Zones. However, ICOM publishes a fairly unique fold-up map with CQ
Zones on one side and ITU Zones on the other. Very useful -
especially for the IARU contest! The map also shows local time vs
UTC, including quarter and half-hour deviations.

[DX-NEWS] 3W2KHO

Most Vietnamese licenses are for just the HF bands (I believe one has
to pay separately for each band!). But ARRL DX News said that Steve
3W2KHO is licensed for 10 through 40M SSB. Does anyone know if that's
really the case? The only cluster spots I've seen were on 15 and 20M
SSB.

Re: [DXR] DXCC and Honor Roll

2001-06-24 Thread John Warren

I believe there's some confusion between Honor Roll and DXCC listings.

Honor Roll (based on current Entities only) is published in QST every
summer. The deadline for submissions was March 31, and I presume we
will see the list in August QST, as was the case last year.

The band and mode DXCC listings (current plus deleted Entities)
appear each spring in the DXCC Year Book, based on a submission
deadline of Sept 30.

Re: [DXR] TX0C Propagation

2001-05-02 Thread John Warren

Gerry WA2VKS wrote:

I also need to chime in regarding catching propagation to an area.
I'm in NJ. We have no direct gray line to TX0, but it is literally right
off Australia. Virtually every sunrise, Australia pounds in here..

Exactly. Gray line is fine, especially for propagation to near the
antipode, but it's certainly not necessary to work somewhere like
TX0C (assuming they're on). When you have overlapping darkness
between two locations, the single gray line peak splits into two, one
occurring at the western end sunset, and the other at the eastern end
sunrise (usually the best). Between the two, you can still get
propagation, but there's often a dip.

A good example was TX0C 40M propagation to W5. We had just over 5
hours of overlapping darkness. Their sunset was at 0627Z, but - so
far as I know - they didn't use that peak. However, as we approached
sunrise (1145Z in W5), there they were, working first the east coast
then the 5s and 0s.

I think the most valuable data for any DXer is to know the
sunrise/sunset times at both ends of the desired path. Very hard to
work DX without that.

[DXR] 10M Long Path during WPX/SSB

2001-03-21 Thread John Warren

From past experience near sunspot cycle peaks, WPX/SSB should be the
best weekend of the year for long path on 10M. From the southwestern
USA, we can beam SW and work Europe, the Middle East, and the eastern
half of Africa. The opening lasts about two hours, starting around
0445Z and continuing to 0645Z. We hope you folks over there will beam
SE and call for USA! Peak signals seem to occur about 45-60 minutes
after sunrise at the European end.

On a personal note, I'm gunning for my "half-DXCC" on 10M LP.
Presently stand at 48 countries worked, so I'll be in there. LP
conditions were quite good during the Russian contest last weekend.
May the propagation Gods smile on us, and keep old sol active but not
mutinous!
