Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

With nVidia hardware from time to time window content is rendered
black or transparent. The problem manifests more frequently as
  session uptime increases.

Apparently the problem was caused by textures being cached and not
freed, resulting in memory exhaustion conditions. It turns out the
  texture caching is unnecessary anyway.

  [ Test Case ]

Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The
problem can not be reproduced at will, only after some time (depending
on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only randomly and
  unreliably.

  [ Regression Potential ]

It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new
  regressions.

  [ Other Info ]

Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu Vivid Vervet dev relase where
it has been in use for some weeks without problem.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1186026] Re: Scrolling over the sound icon closes the dash

2015-03-23 Thread Christopher Townsend
On 14.04, scrolling over the sound indicator does not close the Dash.
Based on the bug description's expected behavior, I say this is fixed.

Whether or not if the Dash should close when clicking on indicators
should be discussed in a different bug report. Closing Fix Released.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1240848] Re: ~/.cache/upstart takes up around 70GB of space due to unity and mediascanner

2015-03-23 Thread Claudio Daniel Tenório de Barros
Hello! I'm not a Ubuntu pro user, but I'm trying to learn more and more.
Yesterday, I experienced the same situation as described here.

I work with molecular dynamics simulation, specifically with a program
called GROMACS. When I was trying to do a simulation, the program told
me it would take about 2 days to complete (weird, because the kind of
simulation I had trying usually lasts about 6 hours). It only took a
little time for my hard disk free space had being completely consumed
(and breaking my simulation).

When I used the Baobap to see the disk usage, it took me to this folder
.cache/upstart occupying about 70GB! I deleted it, restarted the
computer, and my simulation had functioned normally (it took 5 hours to
complete), and I didn't have any problems with the .cache. Very strange
bug!!

I'm not entirely sure if this is related to upstart as I had removed

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1387691] Re: Media Player should not be visible in the app scope and launcher

2015-03-23 Thread Ted Gould
The problem with the OnlyShowIn approach is that it is going to create
a really odd user experience. Should the app show up in the Launcher?
What about the application spread? What if someone pins it on the
launcher? Providing something that is both an application in some states
but not others is only a route to confusing the user.

Along with that, it's really not where we want to go long term. We want
to move towards more helpers and less applications for this type of
functionality. It breaks the architecture that we're trying to build. I
think that CI Train has taught us how long temporary fixes can burn us
:-)

Perhaps there is a middle ground on trusted session splash screens where
it could be at least a black screen so the user can tell *something* is
happening.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1378935] Re: appmenu-qt5 prevents apps from using native Gtk+ dialogs

2015-03-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Sebastien, the long-term plan is to implement global menus support in Qt
itself so that appmenu-qt5 becomes redundant.

This will be in Qt 5.6 but we can backport it to our packages next
cycle.

See https://codereview.qt-project.org/103701.

Bug description:
  Hi,

QtBase ships with a platform theme called gtk2, which enables native
file dialog, color dialog and font dialog on Gtk-based environments
  (such as Unity and GNOME).

https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qtbase/source/5.3:src/platformsupport/themes/genericunix/qgenericunixthemes.cpp#L593

However, when appmenu-qt5 is installed, the platform theme is forcibly
set to appmenu-qt5 (via /etc/profile.d/appmenu-qt5.sh). Thus, the
advantages of gtk2 theme like native dialogs are not available.

  Test case:

  0) Install qtcreator and appmenu-qt5;
  1) Launch qtcreator and select Open Project;
  2) Launch QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME= qtcreator and select Open Project.

In case 1), the standard Qt file dialog will be used (looking a stranger in
Gtk environment).
In case 2), the native Gtk+ file dialog will be used (looking nice).

Sometimes (but not always) after locking the screen there is the

log from a non-manually-initiated run that exhibits this please?

Title:
account-polld does not recognize when messages are cleared

Status in account-polld package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in indicator-messages package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After each reboot, account-polld stops showing incoming emails after
displaying 3 notifications.
The reason for that is that account-polld does not recognize when messages
are cleared from the messaging indicator and therefore does not show any
further notifications.

  How to reproduce:

  1) Reboot your phone.
  2) Send yourself 3 test emails
  3) Wait 5 minutes until account-polld has been run
  4) You'll see three notifications stating that there are new emails
  5) Tap on the clear all entry in the notifications indicator
  6) Mark your last three emails as read (this is optional)
  7) Send yourself another test email
  8) Wait 5 minutes again until account-polld has been run
  9) No notification about the new unread email is shown

  Why does it happen:

When clicking the clear all button, the internal cache of previous
messages isn't cleared. Therefore, account-polld still thinks that
there are 3 notifications and does not display any further messages.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1434521] Re: account-polld does not recognize when messages are cleared

2015-03-23 Thread Niklas Wenzel
I'm sorry for my wording. With error messages I meant the lines which
state that the notifications are still there, which they clearly aren't.

I'll attach a proper log. I just rebooted my phone to follow the
reproduction steps from above.

Bug description:
I have Quantal Beta 1 installed in a Virtual Box VM, since unity-2d is
no longer available it should be doing 3D rendering in software as a
fallback since Virtual Box doesn't expose 3D hardware acceleration
properly. Any form of 3D animation takes, roughly, five to ten times
as long as it should. Opening the dash by clicking the Dash Home
button takes about twenty seconds and you can watch the little spinner
in the corner step through its animation in discreet chunks. Opening
a new window of any application it's also possible to watch the window
opening animation in stages. Operations within an application,
scrolling, etc. aren't noticeably slower than on Precise, so I'm
inclined to call this a unity bug but it's entirely possible it's not.

I'm keeping the Quantal VM around for testing, so if you need further
information or debugging output, let me know and I'll be happy to
  provide it.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1434521] Re: account-polld does not recognize when messages are cleared

2015-03-23 Thread Niklas Wenzel
Here's the new log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10664183/

** Description changed:

After each reboot, account-polld stops showing incoming emails after
displaying 3 notifications.
The reason for that is that account-polld does not recognize when messages
are cleared from the messaging indicator and therefore does not show any
further notifications.

  1) Reboot your phone.
  2) Send yourself 3 test emails
  3) Wait 5 minutes until account-polld has been run
  4) You'll see three notifications stating that there are new emails
  5) Tap on the clear all entry in the notifications indicator

  7) Send yourself another test email
  8) Wait 5 minutes again until account-polld has been run

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1091345] Re: Unity locks up while firefox bookmarks menu is opening

2015-03-23 Thread Christopher Townsend
Removing the 7.3.3 milestone as this no longer an issue. It *could*
still perhaps be an issue on 12.04, so I'm adding a task for that, so
someone can investigate further sometime.

Title:
Unity locks up while firefox bookmarks menu is opening

Status in Unity:
  Invalid
Status in Unity 5.0 series:
  New
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
A common usecase for firefox in Unity is holding down the mouse button
and dragging across the firefox top menu items - File, Edit, View,
History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help. If you accidentally touch Bookmarks
while dragging across the other menu items, the whole Unity interface
effectively locks itself up until the bookmarks menu finally appears.
With just 2000 bookmarks at top-level, clicking the Bookmarks menu
button takes 5 seconds before the menu appears on recent, very fast
computers with 8-core CPUs. This is a serious usability issue.

As the number of top-level bookmarks (bookmarks that are not stored in
sub-folders) grows, the delay after clicking the Bookmarks menu button
until the bookmarks popup menu appears gets longer. There is no disk
I/O associated with the delay. It appears to be caused by purely CPU-
  bound activity.

It seems the delay is perhaps O(n^2) or worse in the number of bookmark items
contained at the top-level menu.
This implies a poor choice or incorrect implementation of algorithms in
sorting and / or displaying the bookmarks. With an efficient algorithm (ref.
any good computer science textbook) correctly implemented, it should be
possible to handle a vast number of top-level bookmarks without noticeable
delay, perhaps 1,000,000s, until disk I/O starts to become an issue for
first-run caching time.

Bug description:
I've been using Unity 5.14. Today, I saw that Unity 5.16 was available
in the -proposed repository. It greatly improved my 3d, but I noticed
that things such as typing, dragging windows, using scrollbars, etc,
have a slight and noticeable delay. I've rebooted to rule out any
  version clash issues.

  Reproduce:

  1) Enable -proposed
  2) Install the new Unity update (5.16)
  3) Restart lightdm (sudo service lightdm restart) and log into a Unity session
  4) Drag any window/scrollbar, highlight text, input text into a field, etc.
  5) Notice that there's a delay between when you perform the action to when
the action takes place (you can see the window/scrollbar trying to catch up to
your cursor, for example)

Definitely related to the new Unity version, since I didn't have this
issue until I applied this update. I haven't made any changes to
anything graphics-related that would cause this to happen.

Bug description:
   affects unity

In order for text entry fields such as used in the lock screen to be
fully accessible for screen reader users, UnityTextInputAccessible
needs to implement the AtkText interface from ATK. Implementing this
interface allows screen reader users to fully interract with the text
entry field, such as querying currently selected text, etc. Of course
if it is a password field, then the user should only hear the password
  character.

Title:
With autohide and the HUD enabled the launcher can appear at incorrect
  times

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi

  What Happened:
  1) Turn on launcher auto hide
  2) Display the HUD (tap Alt)
  3) Move the mouse to the left side of the screen (as if you are showing the
launcher)
  4) Note the launcher is not displayed
  5) Now hide the HUD (either tap Alt or select the X in the top left corner)
  6) Note that the launcher is now displayed, after the HUD closes.

  What I expected to happen:
  - I expected that the launcher is not displayed at step 6.

I expected for the launcher to not be displayed at step 6 because the
user could have the HUD displayed for a long period of time then
decide that they don't need the HUD. The launcher is then suddenly
revealed to them as they moved their cursor to the left side of the
screen a few minutes a ago. This could then confuse the user to why
the launcher has appeared when all they did was close the HUD.

Hope this can be fixed soon.

  Andy

Password is systematically rejected on the lock screen. However, if I
click Switch account, the *greeter* does accept the same password.

This issue is reproducible either by hitting the Ctrl+Alt+L shortcut key or
by runnibg
  `gnome-screensaver-command -l`

This happens after I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.
I had ATI Radeon HD 3870 with open source drivers, now I have GeForce GTX 750
Ti with NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Same thing.
