[Dx4win] DX4WIN QSL Manager Functionality

2011-06-23 Thread Dick Flanagan
I am sending this separate from my previous QRZ XML post as I don't want
the two confused. This has nothing to do with XML functionality.

I have always (since D4W v2.1) wanted more QSL functionality. Let me
give a real-world example:

In 1998 I sent a QSL to ER4DX via the W5FE QSL service.

In 1999 I sent another QSL via the buro.

In 2003 I sent another QSL via the buro and uploaded the data to LOTW.

In 2005 I sent a QSL direct to his QSL manager with SAE, IRC and $2. My
mail bounced. I sent another QSL direct to his QSL manager via a
different mailing address with SAE, IRC and $2. No joy.

In 2007 I sent a QSL direct to ER4DX with SAE, IRC and $2.

In 2008 I sent another QSL direct to a different mailing address with
SAE, IRC and $2.

In 2009 I sent another QSL direct via Registered Mail with SAE, IRC and $2.

In 2010 I received multiple responses via direct and the buro.

In 2011 I received a LOTW confirmation.

The above dates and QSL methods are approximations from memory. I would
dearly love to be able to push a virtual button and have D4W print out a
searchable summary of each QSL attempt to ER4DX with dates, methods,
addresses, enclosures and results.

The previous release (8.x) was heavily oriented toward contesting. I
would love to see 9.x be the QSL manager I have always wanted.

Thanks for the consideration.

Dick

Re: [Dx4win] So How about it Paul? QRZ.com XML lookup??

2011-06-23 Thread Dick Flanagan
In addition to having a rote look-up, also have an option where all
empty DX4WIN QSL fields can be filled in with QRZ data on an individual
or group basis. And have another option to have existing QSL fields
compared with QRZ data to flag any differences, again on a individual or
group basis.

This would be similar to having LOTW confirmation data used to
populate/confirm existing QSL fields (or flag them when they don't match).

A known problem with all of this is that some QRZ data is dependent on
input from the individual ham. This problem also exists with LOTW
confirmations where some people don't know the difference between their
own IARU and CQ zone numbers, so they enter the wrong number when they
sign their confirmation certificates.

There would obviously be a lot of garbage data that D4W couldn't be
expected to identify--let alone correct--but the more QSL functionality
you can provide, the easier my job is confirm thousands of counties,
states and DXCC entities.

WOW! That works out to about $1,000 a year in postage, cards and
envelopes, not to mention the work of filling out and mailing an average
of six QSL cards every day. I think I need a QSL manager!! :)

I would love a one-button feature to print a QSL label and a mailing
label for the current QSO, using my Dymo label printer.

One shortcoming DX4WIN has today is that you will NOT get a mailing
label if the "QSL Manager" field is not filled in. This means if you
want to send direct QSLs to fixed stations (say, all the new USA
prefixes you worked in the last WPX contest), there is no easy way to
print a batch of QSO and QSL labels (say on Avery 5160 30 labels per
sheet) and have all the address labels interleaved with the QSO
labels, so you can sit at a card table (no computer access) with a
stack of blank QSLs, envelopes, stamps and the printed labels and go
  to town.

Hi Lee,

DX4WIN has always had state and county fields. The QTH field was added
in 8.0x. Before that, if you asked 100 different users, 99 of them
would have done it a different way, but most of them put the QTH in
the "Notes for this Call" field. There is a Multiple QSO operation in
8.0x which can move the QTH from the Notes field to the QTH field
(assuming you used a standard way of separating name/QTH in that
field).

Sometime around 2000, I got interested in county hunting also. I'm
embarrassed to admit that I believe I have all 3077 confirmations, but
I have never submitted the paperwork to get a USACA #. I'm down to a
dozen or so to confirm CW-only, and may wait to finish that one before
submitting (if anyone's willing to drive around Kentucky for me)

Having said all that, the easiest way to get started is to enter the
county only from the QSLs you have on hand. There are essentially
four levels of difficulty: the easiest counties (like Cook, IL and
Fulton, GA); the hardest counties (like San Juan, WA, Kalawao, HI and
Nantucket, MA), the ones that are on in most state QSO parties and are
often run on the CH nets (easy), and the last (hard) group which are
the ones that are infrequently run (like Loving, TX, or Grant/Hooker,
NE). Chances are you have confirmations from the easiest group
already. The next group, you'll work many of them even with only a
couple years of effort, either on the CH nets, or by operating the
state and county QSO parties. The third (hard) group requires more
vigilance, and the last (hardest) group you must work them when they
are on. The reason I said all this is that if you bother to look up
the cities from your QSOs, chances are they'll be in the easiest two
groups, not the hardest two groups. IMHO, the level of effort is not
worth it because it takes less time to work them again than you would
spend looking up the data. You may find a few in the harder group,
but again, you're going to have to look up a LOT of cities just to get
a dozen or so counties out of them.

There are ZIP code to county databases out there, however, counties do
not necessarily follow ZIP code boundaries. If you are going to look
up the counties using QRZ.COM, people change calls (and move), so a
QSO you had in 1998 might not be the same station/QTH listed on
QRZ.COM today.

So I wish you luck, but the easiest way is to just get on the air and
work the state and county QSO parties, and the CH net. It's work, but
far from impossible to work 2000 counties in a year. Plus, you'll
definitively know which counties you worked, and it's kind of
addictive!

73 - Jim AD1C

p.s. if you decide to use MRCs (mobile reply cards), don't put more
than one state on a card (even if you work a mobile operator in
multiple states). I learned this way too late, and it will make it
harder for the two volunteers to check all my confirmations (it's
becomes a sorting issue).

Both lines may be necessary. The second line allows information after
the GMT time of the incoming spot, like spotter's state, grid or DXCC
entity. I'm not sure which cluster software can do this, usually it's
at the end of the comment field (before GMT) but I recall there are
instances where it comes after.

I believe the '|' characters are needed because DX4WIN uses regular
expressions to parse the incoming spots.

For the record, my spotting formats are as follows:

[Packet2]
Packet_pat1=DX|DE|r:|f|c|q|tZ
Packet_pat2=f|c|d|tZ|q|
Packet_pat3=r|f|c|q|
Packet_pat4=DX|c|f|q
Packet_pat5=DX DE|r:|f|c|q|tZ *

I believe these are the default patterns, and have been propagated
forward through writing/merging my preferences from earlier versions.

Hi All,

Skip, your closing remark rang a bell here. I've been critically watching
the "Sorted By Time" spots lately, having noted that some are missing.

When I looked at the setting mentioned, the "|" was missing here also.

To be exact, it was missing twice as the first line and last line were
almost identical with the exception that the last line had a " *" appended.

DX DE|r:|f|c|q|tZ
DX DE|r:|f|c|q|tZ *

???
I've changed them both to DX|DE, but now question if both are necessary?
???

For the record, I'm running 8.04 and have been for what seems like forever.

Hello All,

Thanks to Jim AD1C, he found a problem with my setting in the Packet 2
settings window with the "DX DE" spots. A "|" was missing between DX DE.
Not sure how that happened as I did not change any preferences.

Thanks to those of you who made suggestions.

Hello All,

I am having trouble getting DX Spots from the Packet Window to come up on
the DX spots sorted by Time window. This just started recently. The only
way I have been able to that is to use sh/dx on the command line of the
Packet window. I am sure I have some setting wrong some where.
