Summer Research Assistant: Grassland Insect Ecology Job Description: We are looking for enthusiastic and hard-working individuals to assist in all aspects of research on grassland insect ecology and rangeland ecology at the USDA, Agriculture Research Service, Northern Plains Agriculture Research Laboratory in Sidney, MT. Research looks at how fire and livestock grazing can reduce grasshopper outbreaks, how grasshoppers affect grassland health and livestock grazing sustainability, and how drought and predators affect grasshopper outbreaks. Work may include sampling grasshoppers and other rangeland insects in large scale experiments, sampling rangeland plants, and setting up and conducting small scale manipulative experiments in the field. Most field work will be conducted on diverse and beautiful native rangelands in eastern Montana and on the Little Missouri National Grassland in western North Dakota. Some overnight travel may be required. Salary: $12.07 or 13.55 per hour (GS-3 or 4) (dependent on experience and education), plus overtime pay at time and a half. Housing is not provided, but we will help you find housing. Dates: Two positions are available starting either May 18th or June 1st and can last until approximately mid-August or late September. Ruth Yanai is recruiting a graduate student, MS or PhD, to participate in a large, multi-investigator project on terrestrial nutrient limitation in northern hardwood forests. Field sites are located at Hubbard Brook, Jeffers Brook, and Bartlett Experimental Forests in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Since 2011, thirteen stands have been receiving N, P, NP, and control treatments in 0.25-ha plots, and six stands also have a Ca plot. We welcome inquiries from prospective students interested in above- or below-ground questions related to nutrient cycling and tradeoffs involved in multiple resource acquisition. Hello EcoLoggers, Please pass the following posting for a Summer REU position along to any rising juniors or seniors you think might be interested: The Coastal Environmental Change Laboratory at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and the Coastal Plant Ecology Lab at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are looking for a motivated and energetic undergraduate student to participate as a research assistant in an interdisciplinary study of coastal dune dynamics during the summer of 2014. This project is an investigation of the interactions between coastal dune grasses and sediment transport that give rise to coastal dune formation, as well as the impacts of climate change on coastal dune and barrier island systems. The research assistant position is a National Science Foundation Research Opportunity for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) funded through the Long-term Ecological Research program at the Virginia Coast Reserve (LTER-VCR). The successful applicant will spend 10 weeks living and working at the Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center at the VCR on Virginia's Eastern Shore. During this time the student will work and interact with project principal investigators and faculty members Drs. Laura Moore (UNC-CH, Geological Sciences), John Bruno (UNC-CH, Biology), and Don Young (VCU, Biology) as well as with myself, an M.S. candidate in Dr. Moore's group, who will serve as the student's most immediate mentor. The successful candidate will gain exposure to interdisciplinary scientific research and experience using field and computational techniques often employed in the study of ecology and geomorphology, including monitoring of plant growth, measurements of topography and sand accretion rates as well as data entry and basic GIS applications. Primary responsibilities will include collecting, entering and analyzing measurements from field experiments designed to understand the role of vegetation in dune building. The student will also have opportunities to work on related interdisciplinary research projects, potentially including use of numerical modeling. Eligibility: Interested rising college juniors and seniors with some classroom, lab or field experience in environmental science, biology and/or geological science. Workshop Description: The statistical language R is open-source software, freely available and computer platform independent. R is well supported by an extensive community and is powerful enough to thoroughly analyze even the most complicated experimental design. As such, a foundation in the use of R will provide a researcher with the wherewithal for all future data analysis needs. This R Boot Camp will be 4 days of hands-on work with R, providing participants with both the basics of using R (data manipulation, graphing, standard statistics) and the know-how to tap into the extensive resources available so they are empowered for future analysis needs
