Has anyone seen this image elsewhere? Protocol when copyright holder of an
image is unknown?

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

An undergraduate working with me hopes to submit for publication her first
paper by the end of 2015. The student would like to *use one image*:

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/66498000/gif/_66498895_spidersilk.gif

The paper in which it appeared can be seen here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/0/21685308

I contacted the BBC, 'I Photo Library' ; News
website permission requests
and received this reply:

"Our capacity to supply images found on the BBC website is limited by the
quality of image available and potential copyright issues. The images seen
online may be BBC copyright, but are often screen grabs that are unsuitable
for high resolution reproduction. Online images that are not BBC copyright
are often licensed by external agencies for limited reuse on the web.

Unfortunately, on this occasion the Photo library is unable to confirm the
origin of the requested images."

Question # 1: Has anyone seen the image of interest elsewhere? The idea is
that, perhaps elsewhere we detect who is the copyright owner and request
permission.

Question # 2: Does anyone know what is the protocol when copyright holder
of an image is unknown?

If you have answers for question # 1 or # 2, please, kindly send me a reply
off the list to: blayjo...@gmail.com

Gratefully,

Jorge

Hello all,

We are pleased to announce the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution/la
Société
Canadienne d’Écologie et d’Évolution Annual Meeting, which
will be held in St. John’s,
Newfoundland and Labrador July 7-11, 2016.

CALL FOR SYMPOSIA
Rather than a conference theme, this year we have more of a conference
sentiment, captured by
a line from the Ode to Newfoundland: “From windswept land to spindrift swirl".
Our goal is for
conference symposia and sessions to address questions in ecology and evolution
that transcend
systems; we encourage symposium proposals that address research questions with
a suite of
speakers who together work across a number of diverse systems; however, we will
consider all
submitted proposals.

Please submit your symposium proposal to carissa [dot] brown [at] mun [dot] ca
by NOVEMBER
16, including the following information:

Title
Description of symposium (200-250 words; theme, etc.)
List of 6 suggested speakers, their affiliations, and tentative presentation
titles
An indication of whether the speaker has confirmed their participation

Each proposal may include a nomination for a plenary speaker for the
conference who fits
with your symposium theme. If selected, your nominee will receive a grant to
defray the costs of
travel to the conference*

For more information, please email me at the above email address.

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS
We welcome proposals for workshops for the 2016 meeting. Workshops will run on
Thursday,
July 7, 2016 and can be organized for a full day, morning, afternoon, or 1-2
hours. There is also
the opportunity for short 50 minute workshops to be run over the lunch hour
during the scientific
program of the meeting, July 8-10.

Please submit your workshop proposal to carissa [dot] brown [at] mun [dot] ca
by NOVEMBER
16, including the following information:

Title
Description of the workshop (200-250 words)
List of workshop leader(s)
Workshop length and preferred timing
A tentative budget
Estimated number of attendees (minimum and maximum numbers)
Facility or equipment requirements for workshop (e.g., classroom with projector)

We look forward to seeing you in St. John’s, July 2016!

Some of you may be interested in my recent review of this book. It's an
important topic, but I fear the author has been fairly incautious, and ignores
a lot of evidence. Noting the very positive reviews it's getting in some
places, I think it important that there is renewed discussion of the ecological
impacts of invasive species before policy is crafted based upon an overly
simplistic understanding of the problem.

[ECOLOG-L] 2016 ESA Annual Meeting: Proposals for Ignite, Workshops, Special Sessions, Field Trips Due Nov. 19

Call for Proposals: Ignite ESA, Workshops, Special Sessions, Field Trips

101st Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, August 7-12, 2016

Meeting website: http://esa.org/ftlauderdale

Deadline for Submission: November 19, 2015. Only complete proposals submitted
by 5:00 PM Eastern Time (2:00 PM Pacific) will be considered.

We invite proposals for Ignite ESA Sessions, Workshops, Special Sessions, and
Field Trips for ESA's 101st Annual Meeting. Join us in sunny Fort Lauderdale
next summer as we begin ESA's second century with sessions that explore our
meeting theme, "Novel Ecosystems in the Anthropocene."

With a rapidly changing climate, altered hydrological and nutrient cycles,
dominance of large regions by agricultural and urban ecosystems, and massive
movement of species to new continents, the Earth has entered a new epoch
characterized by human influence. Understanding the basic principles of ecology
will be more important than ever before, to predict how new combinations of
species in new environments will develop into functioning, novel ecosystems. We
encourage proposals that address ecosystem structure and function responses to
multiple drivers of change, management of developing novel ecosystems, and
potential benefits and problems that society will face as we progress into the
Anthropocene Epoch.

Although session proposals related to the meeting's theme are encouraged, any
timely and coherent subject of broad interest to ecologists will be considered.
We also welcome proposals that explore interdisciplinary connections with areas
of social and natural science outside of ecology or that relate to ecological
education at any level. All proposals will be peer reviewed using criteria
described in the proposal calls.

If you have any questions, please contact the Program Chair, Lee Frelich
(freli...@umn.edu) or the Science Programs Coordinator, Jennifer Riem
(jenni...@esa.org).

MS position in global change and stream ecosystem ecology

Hood Lab, Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology

 The Ohio State University

I am seeking a Masters student to participate in a large, collaborative
project investigating the influence of climate warming and nutrient
enrichment on stream ecosystems. Our multi-institution team has been
studying the effects of warming and nutrient enrichment in southwestern
Iceland using a series of geothermally-heated streams and stream-side
channel experiments. The student’s research will focus on using the
stream-side channels to understand how warming and nutrient enrichment
interact to shape communities and ecosystem processes.

Applicants should have a strong background in ecology and freshwater
science, an interest in ecosystem ecology, and an ability/willingness to
work with a large collaborative team of national and international
scientists (https://sites.google.com/site/hengillresearch/). The student
should also have demonstrated field and laboratory experience. Fieldwork
may involve long hours and moderately strenuous sampling in wet and cold
conditions.

Ideally, the student would start in June 2016 and participate in the 2016
field season to gain experience with the stream-side channel experiments.
The student will be supported by both teaching and research assistantships.

Interested students should contact Dr. Jim Hood (hoodx...@umn.edu) with a
brief letter of interest, a CV, GPA, and GRE scores if available. Review of
applications will begin on 1 November and continue until a suitable
candidate is identified. For more information please see my website (
