students to get "up close and personal" with the salamanders, frogs, toads,
turtles, lizards, and snakes that call the Northeast home. A small number of
classroom lectures and lab activities will also contribute to the student
learning experience.

The course will include:

[ECOLOG-L] Avian Biologist, Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands

2016-05-02 Thread Fricke, Evan C [EEOBS]
Position: Avian Biologist

Location: Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands

Appointment: 2.5 months, starting early June 2016

Project Description: Nearly all native seed dispersers have been extirpated
from the island of Guam, largely due to predation by the invasive Brown
Treesnake. The Ecology of Bird Loss Project
(www.ecologyofbirdloss.org)
aims to determine the full impact of seed disperser loss on Guam's forests -
including impacts on individual species and to forest structure - and the
potential for different dispersers, both native and non-native, to restore
function. Our research examines the ecological role of seed dispersers through
comparisons of dynamics on Guam to those on nearby islands (Rota and Saipan)
where birds are present.

Job Description: The avian biologist will be conducting field work focused on
determining the effect of avian gut passage on seed germination. This person
will: i) maintain birds in captivity, which includes daily diet preparation and
provision; ii) conduct gut passage experiments using established protocols,
plant seeds in the nursery, and record germination; iii) train and direct the
part-time efforts of other crew members in the care of captive birds and
experimental procedures; and iv) communicate regularly with project leaders
based in Ames, IA.

Requirements: We are seeking a motivated individual with a strong background in
avian ecology, and demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and
ability to work independently. Applicants must have prior experience with
captive bird care and handling wild birds, as well as extensive experience in
mistnetting and/or banding. Applicants should have completed an undergraduate
or Masters degree in a relevant discipline, and must have excellent
communication skills and cultural sensitivity. If a candidate is allergic to
bees, he/she must carry a bee sting kit and be trained in its use, as the
chances of getting stung are high. A sense of humor is always appreciated. The
avian biologist must be a US citizen with a valid US driver's license, and
he/she must be available to start in early June with no exceptions.

Payment and benefits: The salary is $2000-$2200 per month, depending on
experience. We will provide a round-trip ticket from the candidate's current
place of residence to Saipan and housing while on the island.

To apply: Email a single pdf document including a cover letter, resume, and
contact information for 3 references to Dr. Evan Fricke at
ebl.hi...@gmail.com. The subject line should read
"Avian Biologist". The cover letter should describe your previous research
experience, career goals, and why you are interested in this position. In
addition, please indicate the date you would be available to start working.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning immediately. Please
apply by May 8 for full consideration.

For more information, contact Dr. Evan Fricke
(ecfri...@iastate.edu) or Dr. Haldre Rogers
(hal...@iastate.edu).

We primarily use freshwater insects and other invertebrates in small
standing waters as a model system (see http://www.entu.cas.cz/boukal for
examples of our recent work).

Basic qualifications are a PhD in ecology, entomology, applied
mathematics or related fields, and a strong interest in quantitative
ecology. Candidates interested in both experimental and theoretical work
are particularly welcome to apply.

Start date (as early as July 2016) is negotiable. The position is
available until the end of 2017 and may be further extended based on the
postdoc's performance and funding opportunities. It will be funded
through the newly launched Sowa (Soil and Water) National Research
Infrastructure project, and the salary is highly competitive in local
standards.

Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south of Prague with
100,000 inhabitants, a relaxed atmosphere, and a growing community of
foreign scientists at the University and the Biology Centre. Three
faculties and five research institutes dealing with aquatic and
terrestrial biota are located on the same campus, allowing easy access
to other researchers and resources.

To apply, please send a CV including the list of publications, research

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Up to maybe a year or so ago, I used to get useful emails from a listserver
resembling Ecolog-L but with emphasis on ecology education.

Do you know if that group still exists? If so, what it its name? It was like
Ecolog-Ed (or something like that). I have searched for it and cannot find it.
If someone finds it, could you email me off the list?

Gratefully,

[ECOLOG-L] African Social Spiders Field Assistants Needed! (January - April 2017)

2016-05-02 Thread Colin Wright
*Job Description:*

We (Pruitt Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara) are looking
for two field assistants to join us in South Africa and Namibia for *3
months* to help perform and set up various short- and long-term experiments
with the African desert social spider *Stegodyphus dumicola*. We will be
investigating how intracolony behavioral variation leads to success in the
field, its role in defending the colony against ant raids, and the role
that keystone individuals play in this system. This job will require
spending a lot of time both inside performing behavioral assays on spiders,
and outside setting up and recording survival data on colonies in the
field. There will also be a lot of driving, as we will likely be setting up
studies in both South Africa and Namibia. You will be expected to be up
early to assist with projects, and some projects may require surveying
colonies during the night as well. Expect long, 10+ hour workdays. Also, it
is possible that WiFi will be unavailable during the entire 3 month stay in
Africa.

This position will provide you with valuable experience designing, setting
up, and executing research projects in the field. There may also be the
opportunity for you to design and execute your own research project,
depending on our time constraints.

*Compensation*:

We will cover all airfare costs as well as food and lodging while in South
Africa. Additionally, we will pay each assistant $600 per month. If your
performance is outstanding, we will gladly provide glowing letters of
recommendation for you should you need them.

*Duration*:
3 months (from Early January to early April of 2017)
We will be taking applications from now until September, 2016. In early
September we will review all the applications at once and select a handful
of top candidates for Skype interviews. Once the interviews are completed,
we will make our final decisions.

*Requirements*:

1. Seriously interested in pursuing a career in ecology
2. Excellent academic performance
3. Undergraduate or recent graduate
4. Be able to lift 80lbs
5. Must be able to stay for the entire 3 month duration
*6. Must not be squeamish around spiders*. These are medium-sized spiders,
and one colony can have sometimes over 1,000 spiders inside it. You will be
required to handle them often with bare hands. They *will* sometimes try to
bite you, but their fangs cannot penetrate your skin. *It does not hurt
when they bite you*. Please do not apply for this position if reading that
made you queasy.
7. Limited dietary restrictions: food options where we will be staying are
often quite limited, and it may not be possible to accommodate severely
restricting dietary requirements. Vegetarians should be fine.

*Apply for this position*:

If this position interests you, please send your cover letter, CV,
unofficial academic records including current GPA, and two personal
references that we may contact to *Colin Wright *(africaspid...@gmail.com). *We
are accepting applications NOW through November of 2016*.

Additionally, if you have any questions regarding us, our lab, or the
project, please don't hesitate to email me and ask!

[ECOLOG-L] Resources for a 200 level course

2016-05-02 Thread Guimara, Kristel
"Good afternoon,

I am in need of assistance from the Ecolog community. I will begin teaching an
environment and society course that blends the complex nature of humans and the
environment. The course looks at historical establishments of human societies
on Earth and the social drivers of environmental change.

I am requesting subject matter in the form of books, articles and textbook(s)
that I can incorporate into the course. I am a bit overwhelmed in looking for
the subject matter and hoping one (or more) can provide assistance.

Thank you for your time.
