Re: [Wikimedia Education] Moodle at Wikimedia

2019-07-15 Thread Gabriel Thullen
The Geneva (Switzerland) education department has been using Moodle for
years and is quite satisfied with the platform. A few films were produced
on the subject:

https://edu.ge.ch/site/archiprod/?s=DIP-Moodle

That been said, Moodle is great for online courses with a Classroom size
number of attendees. That is probably fine for us, I do not think that we
will have hundreds and hundreds of simultaneous participants. I do have not
any personal experience with a Moodle course addressing thousands of
attendees.

Hello,
Thank you very much for uploading these 20 files to Wikimedia Commons (your
files number 5) and 6) are the same files, and you left out the one called
"NATIVOS DIGITALES").
We have the Spanish and English versions, we can now translate them into
other languages as well !

We can all get to work, I have placed the images in different categories,
and created on for the artist:

[Wikimedia Education] Seeking Endorsements for offline Wikipedia grant proposals

2018-12-03 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Dear All,

I would like to inform you that I have asked for a rapid Grant and a
regular Grant, both related to promoting and distributing offline Wikipedia
(using the Kiwix program) in Senegal. One project will be bringing WikiMed
to health centers lacking internet access and the second project will be
bringing offline Wikipedia as well as other educational resources to
schools with very poor or no internet access.

Both of these projects include "training" sessions so that the future users
of offline Wikipedia will be able to benefit straight away from the huge
wealth of information contained in the encyclopedia which will henceforth
be at their disposal.

WikiMed project:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/GastelEtzwane/WikimedSenegal

Education project:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Offline_Wikipedia_in_Senegal_Schools

Please have a look at these two proposals, and if you feel that they are
worth pursuing, please endorse the proposals. I welcome your comments and
remarks on the grant proposal pages.

Best regards

Gabriel Thullen

Project WikiMed :

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/GastelEtzwane/WikimedSenegal

Project Education :

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Offline_Wikipedia_in_Senegal_Schools

Je vous remercie de regarder ces demandes, et si vous les jugez
intéressantes de les soutenir. Vos commentaires et remarques sont les
bienvenus sur la page de demande de Grant, en français ou en anglais.

Avec mes salutations les meilleures

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Recommendations/Suggestions Needed

2018-09-12 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Hi Felix,

It is great that a Middle school approached you for running a Wikipedia
program. In my experience, it works best if the teachers themselves are the
ones doing the training. This means that you first have to get the teachers
personally involved in the project, train the teachers and show them where
they can get (immediate) help if they have any questions. The teachers have
to be comfortable with editing Wikipedia before they can pass those skills
on to their students.

In Middle school, the students still have a close bond with their assigned
teachers, it is more difficult for an external trainer to come into a
classroom and teach the kids something without cooperating closely with the
regular teacher. If their current teacher has a negative view of Wikipedia,
most of the students will share that view. That can change, and as teachers
we know that in a following year when a teacher no longer have certain
students in his or her class, most of his/her credibility will have been
lost overnight (as well as his/her negative view of Wikipedia). But it
would be easier to first change that teachers negative view than waiting
for next school year and hoping that the students will have another teacher.

So basically you have to be sure that the teachers will support and go
along with the project. The school authorities, of course, but the teachers
must agree. We are all volunteer contributors, nobody forces us to write
and there is no way that an activity like the one you are looking into can
be imposed on the individual teachers. Get the teachers excited about
Wikipedia editing and the students will join in!

There are a number of good suggestions in the answers, so I will not add to
them. If you want to talk about what I do in Middle school please contact
me.

I really hope that your project will work, and I am very interested in the
outcome.
Best regards

Gabriel Thullen

Re: [Wikimedia Education] request for presentations, suggestions, hints

2018-03-25 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Hi Gina,

I can share with you how I do this in West Africa. The situation there is a
bit different, I was presenting Kiwix (www.kiwix.org), an off-line
Wikipedia reader, to teachers who had very little experience with Internet
in general. They have modern cell phones, laptops but Internet connections
are not reliable and very expensive.
- I start by talking about what happens when the Google something. Most of
these teachers have had access to Internet when they go to cities. I then
show them (I usually have connection through my own phone) that Google
displays information from Wikipedia. So they have probably all used
Wikipedia, even those who do not know specifically about the encyclopedia.
- I then talk about Kiwix and off-line access to Wikipedia
- Each teacher, using Kiwix, looks up a subject that they know a lot about,
in their field of teaching. That way they usually find out that no matter
how much they know, or how much their printed teaching resources show,
there is a lot of information on Wikipedia that is new to them. Sometimes
it is just details, sometimes more important sections of knowledge.

When distributing Kiwix in West Africa, I have found out that we need to
spend half a day or so exploring the encyclopedia for teachers to be
convinced that it can be useful to them. In my experience in Geneva
(Switzerland) where there are absolutely no connectivity issues, it also
takes a few hours to show and convince my colleagues of the potential of
Wikipedia for their classrooms.

But you say you have about 1.5 hours. So I would suggest a few ideas:
- Your colleagues probably all know about Wikipedia, but maybe a bit
superficially. I would go over with them how it works: internal links,
external links, related articles, portals, categories, discussion pages,
etc.
- Are some of the adult students foreign language speakers? You could also
show the inter wiki links, and explain that the English Wikipedia has the
most articles, those in other languages are not just translations but have
been written by contributors who may not even speak English!
- Challenge the audience to come up with some information that is not
correct on Wikipedia. I usually do this with my colleagues, and they have
yet to come up with a major error in Wikipedia. I do not count spelling
mistakes...
- I also talk about the way articles a reviewed before publication in
peer-reviewed journals, and compare that to the way articles are written
and improved anonymously on Wikipedia. When an paper is submitted to a
peer-reviewed journal, the reviewers do not know who has written the paper.
They can only judge the paper on it's own merits. Wikipedia is the same:
there is no authority that has signed the article, you have to judge the
article by checking the references... That comparison usually goes well
with university audiences.

I am very interested in how your presentations goes. Please keep us
informed.

Best regards
Gabriel

Hello Tighe,

You are probably aware of the work I do with 7th grade students on
Wikipedia as part of my introductory course to computer science. It is in
French because the school is in Geneva, a French speaking Swiss Canton.

In 2016-2017 school year we worked with Vikidia:
https://fr.vikidia.org/wiki/Projet:Cycle-O-Pedia/Articles

I still have to decide what to do now. I will probably continue with
Vikidia.

There was a National Geographic article back in 2013:

and I just found out that they re-used my photo on another page:

There are also two short films (in French):

[Wikimedia Education] Two Education related presentations at Wikimania

2017-04-28 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Hello to all,

I am quite sure that many of you will attend Wikimania this summer in
Montreal:
https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org

I am proposing two presentations to the organizers which you might find of
interest:
The first one is about sharing and spreading the Kiwix program by the
teachers themselves in schools in Senegal:
https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Grass-
root_distribution_of_Kiwix_in_West_African_schools

The second one is about having my students contribute to Vikidia, working
with Wikipedia for ten years. In a nutshell, I would say that Vikidia is
still very tolerant and helpful to newcomers...
https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Working_with_kids_
:_Wikipedia_vs_Vikidia

If you plan to attend as well, and are interested in these presentations,
please append your user name to the "interested attendees" list.

With my best regards
Gabriel

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Which kinds of students are successful in education programs?

2016-07-21 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Thank you very much for your feedback which corresponds to my experience
with 7th grade students over the pastvten years. Sorry about being short, I
am out in the senegalese brush and the phone connexion is sporadic.

Hello everyone,

Sorry I'm joining the correspondence late (this is the period of training
teachers in Israel, busy days). It is interesting to learn from the
experience that was gained around the world and different models that were
developed. I'd be happy to share a few points based on the education
activity in Israel.

Our main expertise concerns educational tasks of creating new articles, and
significantly expanding existing ones, in Wikipedia. Here, too, experience
has shown that for such tasks, level of writing is more important than age
(as long as the students are not too young, that is, their age is over 13
or 14).

Regarding the skills required for such tasks – we defined the following
skill Check:

1. Curiosity, the ability to ask questions

2. Good information literacy - high ability to detect and evaluate
information sources

3. A good reading comprehension, including the ability to perform critical
reading and distinct between important and unimportant data

4. Good writing skills, including the ability to write clearly and
correctly, form independent phrases, design the structure of the text,
synthesize different sources of information, and adjust the writing style
to the desired genre

Another point that should be noted, is that the ability of young students
(and generally, of newcomers) to cope with the task of articles writing
depends not just on their personal abilities, but also the nature of the
writing subject, the assignment and the training. These are the conclusions
we reached in this regard:

1. Writing subjects: young students performs better when they write about
concrete writing topics, such as persons or heritage sites.

2. Assignments: young students tend to deal with creating a new content
unit (a new article or chapter) better than with modifying an existing text.

3. Training:

a. Young students will need assistance in choosing the writing subject,
planning the process of work, locating and evaluating sources of
information and drafting. Therefore, it is important to have a close and
professional figure that will supervise them (we work with teachers
especially trained to do it.)

b. If all the students write about a similar topic, it is easier to give
them detailed guidance, because everyone can get the same recommendations
regarding the structure and type of information sources. (For example, in
one of our projects, 50 young students wrote articles on the same topic -
leading scientists, and thus we were able to produce a uniform training
brochure

that
can guide them better in the process of content creation.)

One last point: teachers may be interested in using Wikipedia as a
pedagogical tool in the context of content creating, but also in the
context of information consumption. I am attaching a link for a teacher
guide

that
offers teachers the pedagogical use Wikipedia in both these contexts.

Thanks to everyone for sharing information, happy to be a part of this
correspondence!

Yes, the Vikidia emcyclopedi is more appropriate for primary school
students. It is also quite useful for them because the articles are written
in a language that they can understand.
I am actually trying to promote Vikidia among the primary schools in Geneva
(as well as using Wikipedia with older students)

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Integration Wikipedia into primary and secondary schools in Serbia

2014-06-19 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Yes, Andrew, that is the type of argument I usually use when talking to
parents or the school authorities.
What I am saying is that we have to make sure that all teachers/educators
who work with Wikipedia have easy access to this type of argument.

And as I said, this may be less of a problem with the English wiki, as it
appears that some web filtering services block certain wiki articles in
English, but not in other languages. I am not too happy to find out that
the English Wikipedia is partially blocked by private cencorship companies,
I wonder what WMF has to say about that kind of filtering. When foreign
governments try to do it, there is a large outcry. But when it supposedly
is done for "our children's good", nobody protests...

Re: [Wikimedia Education] Integration Wikipedia into primary and secondary schools in Serbia

2014-06-18 Thread Gabriel Thullen
Like I said before, great job for both Israel and Serbia !

There is one very important issue that we (as WM Chapters) need to address,
now that Wikipedia editing will be part of the official school curriculum.
How do we answer teachers or parents raising concerns about the so-called
"adult" material found on Wikipedia ? Some of it is downright porn, and we
(as Chapters) have to be able to answer these concerns.

[[:fr:Catégorie:Position sexuelle]] = [[:en:Category:Sex positions]] =
other interwikis
or
Commons: Category:Wiki-Sexuality Images

The Geneva education department has an Internet filter that blocks some of
the articles on the English wiki, for example
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingering_(sexual_act) is blocked, but does not
filter the French wiki fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doigtage. Obviously, the web
filter companies are US (aka English speaking), so they may or may not
filter other language Wikipedia pages. What we absolutely should avoid is
this type of web filtering, and certainly not such filtering done by
separate countries.

Please note that I have always been opposed to censorship in general and
opposed to censoring Wikimedia in particular. The issue has been raised a
few times over the past few years, and I have always been able to provide
adequate answers to the parents or school officials. But now that Wikipedia
editing is a part of the official curriculum, these questions need a more
"official" answer as well. Information should be freely available to all,
even so-called "adult" information. As a school teacher using the web in
class, I have to keep a watch on the web sites the students browse and
discuss with them how to deal with inappropriate web sites that slip
through the filters. I do the same when my students start surfing on sex-ed
related Wikipedia articles...

I can just imagine the uproar in Israel when one or the other of the more
conservative religious groups finds out the kind of articles young students
are subjected to in class... I say that for Israel, but the same uproar
will be possible in some of the Swiss Cantons when Wikipedia editing
becomes an official part of their curriculum (each Canton has its own
curriculum, some Cantons include religious education, some do not, and so
on). We need, at the very least, a set of arguments we can use to defend
Wikipedia. For the moment, nobody has said anything, probably because
adults are usually not very curious. Our kids, on the other hand, tend to
explore a lot more...

Anyway, that was some food for thought. I am looking forward to learning
about how you will cope with that kind of issue, I know that the same
problem might arise some day here in Switzerland.

That is really great! Good work!

I also do work on Wikipedia with my classes, and every once in a while I
have a serbian student. When that happens again, I will try to remember to
get in touch with you.

Right now, I have a few Bosnian and Kosovan students, but I am not sure
that they would relate well to somebody from Serbia...

Congrats once again on your acheivement!
