My only(!) problem with Mouser is that they now ship EVERYTHING in a box 
which costs no less than $6.50 to ship (UPS).


They used to ship small parts on padded envelopes for a couple bucks, but 
now nothing goes out unless it's boxed.


I do, however, like the fact that no matter how small your order, there's 
never a handling fee and only ACTUAL shipping is charged. There IS a $1 
'handling' charge if you ask them to ship via USPS because someone must 
hand-carry the box (again) to the P.O.


They ARE fast and generally accurate in their parts picking.

[Elecraft] Saturday's CW NAQP Contest

North American QSO Party
 
This is (was) a great contest for QRP'ers because all the top
USA contesters are on and they want to exceed 800-900
QSO's in 10 hours. So, they 'hear' very well and so do their
super stations. Hearing QRP to them is like hearing
Afghanistan. No problem!!!...
 
The SSB side of this contest (for the K2
crowd) is on Aug 21 starting @ 1800Z.

I was only on for 5 1/2 hours and on my K1-4 with 15,20 and
40 meters managed to work 34 states, 3 VE Provences 
including PEI, European Russia and Brazil. 167 QSO's.
And thats with incredibly lousy condx. 
Also, that was battery power and the antenna was an 
Outbacker Perth on a tripod in the back yard.
 
The NAQP CW and SSB is twice per year. Summer and 
winter. 100 watts max, with a QRP catagory..Allowed 10 hours 
to operate. Winter, QRP should work 'all' 50 states easily
C U in the SSB in 2 weeks.  I'll be QRO.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report Aug 9, 2004

Another great net was held at 0200z on 7045 kHz.  Thanks Tom for holding 
down the middle.  Massachusetts, Oregon, California, Oklahoma, South 
Carolina, North Dakota, Texas, Indiana, Colorado, Missouri, quite a haul.


Relays were bouncing hot and heavy across the country and one call for a 
contact.  Didn't quite pull that one off but it was a good try.  Please 
remember QTCs (messages) are available if you wish a contact with 
someone.

Hi Tom,

Thought you might like to know that you are RST 459 to RST 259 through a
VERY loud LU SSB station, and through ER4DX a little bit up. The latter has
a lot of hardware in the sky pointing at me at this time, + vy QRO. Am
listening to you on my homebrew Rx - oh you have just gone - because K2 is
having a new phone jack put in. Now you are back !! This on 7045ish.

Must go to bed !! But I am hearing some of the other guys quite well  -  S2
to  S4 region.

evening.  Bill checked a bit early as I was claiming a frequency.  Very

The spam button in question is on the later AOL 9.0 and is marked "Report  
Spam". Unfortunately as reported it is adjacent to the "Delete" button.
 
The amount of spam arriving in my mailbox is down to a few e-mails per day  
plus another small percentage goes direct to a spam folder. The action of  
designating a message as "Report Spam" has the effect of sending it to the spam 
 
folder. Even at that point it can be restored back to the mailbox by 
designating  as "this is not spam" which restores it for reading. With this in 
mind the 
only  point that it could be reported to AOL is when the spam designated 
messages are  deleted from the spam folder which I do every few days. In other 
words it would  possibly take two separate actions to make the mud stick.
 
Looks like another try is needed with AOL to resolve the  matter with them as 
there is little the list can do to protect itself from the  occasional moron 
with a loaded PC and a mouse.

[Elecraft] K2 LCD Errata

I am at the point of mounting the diffuser and the LCD and have read carefully 
the ERRATA REV. E-6 Nov. 14 , 2003 and understand that the front protective 
film is to be removed at a later step.  My question is with the back of the LCD 
, which appears to all white on mine.  I not sure where the gray lines come in 
to this , but I'm not sure whether to remove this white looking covering or to 
leave it.  This is hardly a faintly visible yellow or gray diagonal line 
covering as indicated on the ERRATA.  Thanks for anyones help.

Over the last year or so our system has been periodically blocked from sending 
mail into the AOL system.  A month ago, I finally made arrangements with them 
to be white listed and put an end to this once and for all.  To be white listed 
by them I had to agree to receive any and all complaints logged by their users 
about mail being sent from our system (we don't send spam, no problem).

While this seemed easy, I found that AOL provides their users a button on their interface that says 
something to the effect that "this message is spam", and when they highlight a message 
and push it, we get a "complaint" logged against us and mailed to us.  No one at AOL 
reads this stuff, but they keep track of them and after we reach a certain percentage of the mail 
we send vs how many complaints we get, they block our entire system.  I've also found that the spam 
button is next to the delete button, and a clueless user MIGHT use it to delete messages.  Here in 
lies the problem.

I am getting plenty of these "complaints" and since AOL does not tell me who is 
complaining (apparently a privacy issue), it's near impossible to find out who they are 
and remove them from the system.

So, I'm asking all list owners to post a message to all of your lists reminding AOL 
people not to use the "spam" button as a delete button and if they are 
subscribed to your list and don't want to be, help them get off the list so we don't get 
blacklisted by AOL.

I agree with Lyle's discussion on this. The reason for using 1N5711s is 
to get low power accuracy. If you are running high power only, then you 
probably could get by with 1N4148s in the directional coupler, 
sacrificing low power operation.


If you really want to replace them today, you could probably get away 
with using the 1N4148s temporarily, replacing them with real 1N5711s 
when you get them. 1N5711s are relatively easy to get (here in Silicon 
Valley, at least), obtainable from Mouser, DigiKey or even Scott at 
Elecraft...


The original Breune bridge circuits favored by many (including DeMaw) 
used germanium 1N34 diodes because of their low forward voltage drop. 
They are no longer manufactured, and hard to obtain. If you have some 
in your junk box, they might be a better selection for temporary (and 
maybe longer) use.

Another clue that this is happening  (charging capacitive loads, etc.) is
that
the reading will be sliding, drifting while you are watching it.  If you see
this,
reverse the leads.

The new standard version of the KSB2 filter is the same as my 2.2 kHz
design.  Elecraft measures the bandwidth to the 6 dB points, so they quote
the bandwidth as 2.3 kHz.  If you want to use my 2.5 kHz bandwidth design,
you now only have to change 4 capacitor values.

Try reversing the ohmmeter leads or changing ranges and see if the readings
look better. If not I wouldn't worry about it. You are mainly looking for
gross errors like very low readings or shorts. Some DVM ohms ranges will
turn on semiconductors in the circuits and that will give the effect of a
lower than expected reading. Changing ranges or reversing the leads may keep
the semis from conducting.

I am assembling K-2 S/N 4397.  I have just completed the Control Board.  Two
of the resistance checks fail.  The resistance between the collectors of
both Q1 and Q2 to ground measure 454 K each.  They are supposed to show
resistance >1meg to ground.  I have checked resistor network RP1.  It is
installed correctly.  On RP1, the resistance between 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and
9&10 are all 3.9K.  Resistance checks between 2&3, 4&5, 6&7 are all under 1
ohm.  Resistance between 8&9 is about 1.5k.  That strikes me as an anomoly,
but I'm not sure.

Can anyone tell me whether this looks good, or suggest where the problem
might be?

Hi 

Try reversing the ohmmeter leads or changing ranges and see if the readings 
look better. If not I wouldn't worry about it. You are mainly looking for gross 
errors like very low readings or shorts. Some DVM ohms ranges will turn on 
semiconductors in the circuits and that will give the effect of a lower than 
expected reading. Changing ranges or reversing the leads may keep the semis 
from conducting.

The 1N5711 is a Shottky barrier diode; the 1N4148 a normal silicon diode.
The improved accuracy is gained by substantially reduced forward voltage
drop, about 0.2 to 0.3V for the 1N5711 vs. about 0.6 to 0.7V for the 1N4148.
The result of substituting (and after "calibration") would be to make low
power readings too low, which in practice means overly optimistic SWR
readings.

A PIN diode won't work in a directional coupler.  For a coupler you need
rectification of RF, the very feature that a PIN diode is designed to not

[Elecraft] 1N5711 diodes in directional coupler

These are used in the directional coupler of the K2, KPA, and KAT-100.  I have 
lost these to ESD more than once.  Several questions;

Gary says that 1N5711's give more accurate readings than lessor diodes such as 
the 1N4148... question; how much more accurate, and how critical is this 
accuracy?  Would the 1N4148 be more, less, or the same susceptability to ESD?

I don't have any 1n5711's in my stock, but I do have some very fine PIN diodes, 
labeled, MA 47 266.  Are these acceptable substitutes for 1N5711's?  Would they 
be more or less accurate in the directional coupler?  Would they be more or 
less susceptable to ESD damage?
