[Elecraft] K2 L25 and L26

2004-08-09 Thread Bob Boehmer
Hello.

I am building K2 SN3278 and am about to install L25 and L26 (40m low pass
filter). I have pre-wound toroids BUT the pre-wound toroids both have 16
turns. The manual says L25 should be 14 turns and L26 should be 12 turns.

I assume that the manual is correct but wanted to double check.

Thanks 73

Hi Tom

I have successfully used my SCS PTC IIex modem with my K2 for Winlink
remote email application. I interface it to the rig through the mic
jack with the mod to bring receive audio to the mic jack through an
unused pin. I am thinking of adding a din receptacle to the back of
the rig to make the connection direct and leave the mic jack free.

I run Pactor III with no trouble whatsoever and achieve great data
throughput. The K2 (QRP) with the SCS modem is a dynamite combination
for keeping in touch via Winlink while traveling by boat, rv or even at
the picnic table up at the cottage. I can make connection with the
host stations on 40 and 20 with a 22 foot wire thrown into a tree and a
counterpoise.

Folks,

I too agree - Ordering parts from Elecraft is not only easy, but you do
receive personalized service too - Scott and Richard do a fantastic job,
part numbers help a lot to avoid ambiguities, but they are available and
receptive with information about a particular part should the part number
not be readily available, one will not find that level of service at Mouser.

Now, I do order often from Mouser (and Digi-Key too) and they also are
really fine folks to deal with. If I am ordering in quantity for my parts
stock or for a non-Elecraft project, they will be my primary choices, but if
I need a particular part for a K1, K2 or KX1 (or any of the options), I pick
up the phone and talk to the fine folks at Elecraft - it arrives in the mail
within a week (OK, this is location sensitive, and parts from Mouser or
DigiKey arrive in 3 business days for me, but the shipping cost is more than
from Elecraft).

My only(!) problem with Mouser is that they now ship EVERYTHING in a

They used to ship small parts on padded envelopes for a couple bucks,

I do, however, like the fact that no matter how small your order,
there's never a handling fee and only ACTUAL shipping is charged.
There IS a $1 'handling' charge if you ask them to ship via USPS
because someone must hand-carry the box (again) to the P.O.

They ARE fast and generally accurate in their parts picking.

In this case, there's no reason to avoid the middle-man and all kinds

[Elecraft] directional diodes 1N5711

2004-08-09 Thread Indy
First, thank you to those who responded and taught me the difference between
these several types of diodes. Now, to share an experience, actually, several.
three times in five years have had my radio go awry on transmit, and all three
times the cause was the same; directional diodes in the SWR bridge.

Specifics of the symptom vary because, for example, this time in the K2, the
FWD diode fried infinitely open in both directions, while the REF diode fried
shorted. In the KPA both diodes fried leaving 1.5K in both directions.

Specific details of radio behavior were quite different, but general behavior,
loss of the power control on the K2, HI CURR report from the radio trying to
run all out (since the bridge is reporting inaccurately what power is going by
it), unable to use the auto-tuner, inaccurate SWR and power out reporting.

KAT-2 ... not a recommendation, just a comment. I mount the diodes on the
underside of the circuit board. This puts them on the outside of the KAT-2
module which makes it possible to replace them without any disassembly.

KPA ... I haven't yet thought of anything clever for making these diodes more
accessible, would be nice.

Kirby, who really does know, suggests putting a 1 uh choke at the input of the
directional coupler to protect these diodes. Once that is done, however, one
will no longer be able to check the viability of the diodes while in the
circuit since this will look like a short to ground to a DVM.

I am sure this problem occurs more or less frequently depending upon where one
is located, and what kind of antenna. For example, I have never lost these
diodes when using my forty meter full wave loop which puts the antenna at
ground potential. Lost them now after putting up a G5RV flat top which seems
to have no trouble gathering static even in a clear sky.

The KPA has a 100 uh choke across the antenna jack. That did not protect the
diodes in the KPA, dunno why. I am sure it protects the finals.

P.S. Had a friend lose K2 finals to ESD. Is there any reason why one couldn't
put that 100 uh choke across the antenna jack on the K2 f???

Thank you, and 73

[Elecraft] K2 Firmware change request

2004-08-09 Thread Torsten Clay
I used my pair of K2/100's in last weekend's NAQP CW. Band conditions were
pretty good for August, and I ended up with 789 qso's. I use the pair
SO2R, meaning I am listening on one band while transmitting simultaneously
on another band. In the NAQP mults count on every band (including 160),
and you change bands a lot.

I was reminded again of a K2 firmware bug that has been very annoying to
me: after changing bands, the K2 transmit power is reset to zero. I takes
several dits for the power to come up to 100%. That means if I change
bands, the first station I call gets something like AOGW instead of
N4OGW! If I forgot to hit the tune button or send a string of random dits,
the station I was calling frequently came back with ? I'd rather not
have to QRM other stations tuning up every time I change bands.

Is it possible to make the K2 start out at 100% TX power? Is this supposed
to protect the finals?

In the NA Sprint contest (coming up in September!) this is a really big
deal. There, you must QSY after calling CQ, and if the station I am
calling misses my call, I may never hear him again!

The resetting of power upon BAND change is a function of the ALC which is
NOT hardware-derived, but software-driven. When you change bands, and the
power level generally WILL change because each band has a little bit
different efficiency, hence different drive levels required for the same
requested power output, the ALC must measure the actual output against the
requested output and make a determination as the drive required. This
requires a number of RF cycles to accomplish, thus the need to hit a few DITs.

Now, regarding the Sprint... unless you actually change BANDS after each
QSO, this should NOT be a problem since the K2 doesn't require resetting of
the ALC upon a frequency change WITHIN BAND. However, if you do change
bands after each QSO, then it will... and (VERY UNFORTUNATELY) I see no way
to get around it... sorry.

Maybe Wayne can some up with a way to save the ALC level DAC count and
apply it to the initial setting for the next band selected so you'll at
least have SOMETHING (more than mW) going out when you hit the key...

I find myself switching to the dummy load after changing bands and
sending a string (not a couple) of dits. This is very annoying in a
contest or when calling a DX station, but as you say it is inherent in
the design of the K2 and it doesn't seem that there's anything that can
be done about it.

On the other hand, Wayne has worked apparent miracles before, so maybe
he can again!

Saving the setting band-to-band might work. However, why can't this data
be saved (at least to some approximation) when the rig is first
aligned/built? Why re-determine it every time the band changes? Does it
change strongly with temperature?

My point is that especially when operating SO2R (standard if you want to
win a contest these days!), you are changing bands all the time. Much more
frequently than with only one rig. In the NAQP I frequently zip through
the other bands to check for openings.

One popular strategy in the Sprint now is to switch bands between QSO's.
Yes, it is possible to try to keep band changes down, but in the heat of
the battle, it's hard to remember that!

[Elecraft] Elecraft parts

While I agree that Mouser is a super parts source,
nothing beats buying Elecraft parts from ... Elecraft!

[Elecraft] carrying cases and ESD

2004-08-09 Thread Indy
My ESD problem with the K2 and KPA followed a severe shaking over washboard
roads on a voyage to remote Chaco Canyon. The K2 was riding in a Lowes foam
surround carrying case. I can not prove, but I do not think the ESD that
zapped the directional couplers came from an antenna. It happened immediately
upon reconnecting the K2 to the KPA (which had been left entirely disconnected
and which worked perfectly before the trip).

for me, at least, the moral of the story, I now have static free wrapping for
the K2 when it rides in the foam fitting case. Maybe I am wrong, but can't
hurt. Maybe this report will also protect others from the frustration.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Firmware change request

2004-08-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Might do. And then when you hit the key with the wrong antenna (or no
antenna) attached, you may need to take a break and replace the finals. The
K2 and K2/100 are very robust systems, but repeated abuse is sure to have
its consequences.

Even with manually-tuned vacuum tube gear, smart ops drastically reduced the
power when retuning, especially on a new band.

Circumventing this simple check in pursuit of an extra few seconds in a
contest reminds me of the race driver who constantly winds the RPM up above
the red line on the tach. He might get in the lead. He might even win a race
or two, but he'll pay for it eventually.

Maybe someone will find a clever fix to allow instant band changes without
the added second to allow the K2 to check the output SWR and reset the power
level. If so, more power to them, but I sure don't want to pay for it in the
basic cost of my rig.

-Original Message-

Saving the setting band-to-band might work. However, why can't this data be
saved (at least to some approximation) when the rig is first aligned/built?
Why re-determine it every time the band changes? Does it change strongly
with temperature?

My point is that especially when operating SO2R (standard if you want to win
a contest these days!), you are changing bands all the time. Much more
frequently than with only one rig. In the NAQP I frequently zip through the
other bands to check for openings.

One popular strategy in the Sprint now is to switch bands between QSO's.

2004-08-09 Thread wayne burdick
This can definitely be improved in firmware, and it's on the list for
the next update. (However, a new version is NOT due out any time soon.
When we get closer to that point we'll announce it.)

Meanwhile, send a dash, not a string of dots. Generally, power output
will stabilize within one dash except at very high code speeds.

Re: [Elecraft] carrying cases and ESD

2004-08-09 Thread Stuart Rohre
Hi,
Indeed, vibration in mobile transport creates triboelectricity, a charge
build up by friction of wires insulations against conductors. It could be
not the foam of the box, (which usually is grey or black indicating carbon
content) but the wiring inside the radio.

It is always good practice to short a cable before connecting it to other
electronics to remove any residual charge.

Tom,
The local SCS modem expert is Lewis Thompson, W5IFQ here at ARL. email him
at the adr I will send, for info on the interfacing of the SCS. He has
successfully interfaced them to the little 5 watt Yaesu radio, I know. I
think it is pretty straightforward to interface the SCS to anything. The
manuals are readable and VERY complete, as I studied one when he and I
hooked the SCS to an Icom 756 Pro II.

Appreciate it, Stuart - would still appreciate any feedback from a K2 owner
who has tried this - the actual rig interface looks simple but they talk
about supported rigs and transmit receive times and their may be filter
considerations to achieve PACTOR III speeds.I did send Lewis a note on
your suggestion - thanks!

[Elecraft] FS: K1 with lots of stuff

2004-08-09 Thread Jeff McLeman

Hi,

I am selling an Elecraft K1, s/n 918. It is in great condx, and it has
the KNB1, KAT1, 4 band filter board (40,30,20,15 meters). Also included
is the KTS1 tilt stand, KBT1 internal
battery option (built but not installed). This radio has performed
beautifully and has all the current ECOs in it. It also comes with a
Pelican 1400 hard case (yellow), and is notched for the K1, dissaembled
tilt stand storage, gell cell battery storage and accessories. This
radio has just been sitting around and not being used, so I am sure
there is a good QRP'r out there that wants to give it a good home.

I will take $550 plus shipping (lower 48 states only) for all of the
above.

Please feel free to email me at:

THanks,

Re: [Elecraft] SCS modems with a K2

2004-08-09 Thread N6TQS
We used a PTCPro with a K2 on the T33C trip, and the radio and modem
worked just fine for log uploads.

I've also used my PTC-IIe with my K2/100 with the EA3BLQ mod to make a
6pin digital mode mini-Din attachment point. I wired it such that it
matches the equivalent mini-DIN on the FT-817 and IC706MKIIG, so I can
use the same cable for any of them.
