Re: [Elecraft] Re: K2 Remote/Server
I beg your pardon? Before leaping to attack someone, perhaps you should consider whether the inference you object to was intended by the author, or just the way you read it? I merely wished to state that in replying to Mike's post I wasn't agreeing with his strong criticism of Elecraft in failing to deliver the K2 Server. But since you want to pick an argument over it, I will now add that he does have a point. On page 20 of my KIO2 manual it states: Using the K2REMOTE Control Program K2REMOTE was developed by Elecraft to provide flexible remote control of the K2, even over the Internet (using TCP/IP). I have been follwing Elecraft since the very first. My K2 S/N is 392, and I ordered the KIO2 right when it was announced. It doesn't matter what you say, K2 Server *was* originally promised. However, if you had actually bothered to read my two postings on the subject, I think you might have come the conclusion I was saying that there are already enough ways to control the radio remotely that the absence of K2 Server is not an issue. I await your apology. -- Julian, G4ILO (RSGB, ARRL) G4ILO's Shack: http://www.tech-pro.net/g4ilo Charles Bland [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm not going to enter into the argument over the ethics of promising something and not delivering. [Elecraft] Low Power ?
I wonder if my K2 (Serial # 2424 with latest mods and software) is set up correctly and would appreciate comments. Output power with CAL CURR set at 3.0 amps is as below. Increasing CAL CURR to 5 amps makes little difference. I know that the K2 is basically a 10 watt rig and I get more on some bands, but the upper bands do not achieve this. When using the K2 with my KW1000 Linear Amplifier a watt or two makes a difference. 80 Meters = 13.0 watts out 40 Meters = 10.0 watts out 30 Meters = 12.0 watts out 20 Meters = 11.0 watts out 15 Meters = 8.0 watts out 12 Meters = 9.5 watts out 10 Meters =7.0 watts out Thanks in advance for your advice - Larry (G0IKE) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Low Power ?
Larry: I haven't measured my K2 output power for a while, but I recall I can get 10 Watts out on 10 meters and at least 15 on 80 meters when I'm using a 13.8 volt power supply. A 12 volt gelcell doesn't allow for full output, especially at the higher frequencies. If you are using 13.8 volts, you might try to go through the alignment procedure one more time. With your readings, it's hard to imagine there is much wrong with the rig. Of course, you also need to be fairly confident your power meter is accurate at these levels. 73's John AA0VE Larry Dodson wrote: I wonder if my K2 (Serial # 2424 with latest mods and software) is set up correctly and would appreciate comments. Re: [Elecraft] Low Power ?
Larry, The K2 is speced for 10 watts out on all bands with a 13.8 volt power supply, and most are capable of about 12 watts on the higher bands (10/12 meters) and 15 watts on 17 meters and below. Recall that there is a menu entry (secondary menu) that sets the power limit on 10 meters - it defaults to 10 watts. If you are checking for maximum power on that band, you may want to temporarily set that value to 15 watts. You could first try repeaking the bandpass filters - the K2 typically has more gain on 40 and 30 meters, so your low 40 meter output gives me suspicion. The most common reason for low power output is T2. T2 should be wound so that the secondary (green wire) is spread over most of the primary turns, and it should be mounted above the board by about 1/16 inch (2mm). You may want to download the latest manual and look at the illustration for T2. Also check T4 - make certain it has the proper number of turns and that it was not wound for maximum efficiency at 5 watts. Last but not least, be certain your wattmeter is correct - many are not, and be certain your dummy load is actually 50 ohms resistive on the band you are investigating. If you have a calibrated 'scope with a frequency limit of 50 MHz or more, you can check the wattmeter by observing the RF voltage across the dummy load. Power can be calculated as the square of the Peak to Peak Voltage divided by 400 for a 50 ohm load (yes, you can do all the peak to RMS conversions and arrive at the same thing - I will leave the proof to the 'student'). An RF probe can also be used to measure the RF voltage, and in that case the probe shows RMS voltage and the power is calculated as V**2/R. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - I wonder if my K2 (Serial # 2424 with latest mods and software) is set up correctly and would appreciate comments. Ken, OK, I just checked the docs - you are correct. I do move it up when checking for max power out because I also do a check on the SSB peaks - I have done this so often when setting up K2s that it is simply routine for me. It is not necessary for CW!! 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Hi: I could be wrong but I think that the power limiting on 10 meters is only active for SSB or Digital modes and not CW. 73, Ken K3IU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Using the K2's 10th S-meter LED for CW Tuning indication
Hi Joe: I believe you said you preferred the K6XX design over KR5L, so my current thinking is to build the K6XX version. I don't know why I want to build the tuning indicator because I do alright with matching tones using the K2 SPOT function. Would you care to share why you haven't built the LED tuning indicator? I know, you like to use the SPOT ! I've never really needed it! I've been doing aural zero beating for so many years (46 now) that I can usually get within a few tens of Hz even without hearing the sidetone, and within 10 Hz when using the sidetone. For those who haven't developed to knack, or who just like bells (err, LEDs) 'n whistles, the CW Tuning Indicator is a nice adjunct. Re: [Elecraft] Using the K2's 10th S-meter LED for CW Tuning indication
Hi Tom: This sounds like a great addition to the K2. Is its purpose to indicate a zero beat? Actually, to indicate CLOSE TO ZERO BEAT...usually +/- 20 or so Hz. Your post sounds as if there are already some CW tuning indicators out there and that you have developed a way to incorporate them into the K2, using the LED as an indicator. There are MANY indicators out there! Several years ago, Jerry, KR5L, posted (on this reflector) his design using an NE567. I designed up a PC board and a number of those boards were made available to builders. Jerry's design works very well!!! In fact, I just this morning read yet another testimonial from a satisfied builder (which made his own board, or possibly just haywired the design). The K6XX design uses a different IC (Exar XR-2211, which I consider to be a somewhat superior PLL, both with regard to input sensitivity and speed of response. Other than that, I think either design should work well fir builders. I claim NO OWNERSHIP of ANY OF THESE DESIGNS. Nor do I claim ownership of the use of the 10th LED in the K2 display. I'm just trying to provide a bit more comprehensive documentation for them. If this is the case can you be so kind as to point me in the direction of a site which can give the details to build the tuning indicator. Also, if you could send me your PDF file on installing an indicator into the K2, I would very much appreciate that also. You can find the docs for both the KR5L and the K6XX LED CW Tuning Indicators on my web site: www.n0ss.net under Other Stuff (almost to the bottom of the page). Hope this helps. 73, Tom N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Using the K2's 10th S-meter LED for CW Tuning indication
Hi Folks: WOW! The response has been a bit overwhelming to my offer to send copies of my draft set of docs for installing the KR5L or K6XX CW Tuning Indicators into the K2, using the 10th LED of the S-Meter Bar Graph. Rather than sending out individual copies of the PDF, I have now placed a PDF of the draft documentation file on my web site at: www.n0ss.net Just follow the Quik-Link down to the link for the article and download it. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DOWNLOAD A PDF FROM A WEB SITE DIRECTLY TO YOUR HARD DRIVE, PLEASE READ THE (YELLOW HIGHLIGHTED) NOTE JUST ABOVE THE QUIK-LINK ON MY WEB PAGE FIRST. And, to those who have asked, yes, I do (or WILL) have boards available for this project. At present, the boards are kitchen-made, in small batches, and hand-drilled. Takes a little while to knock them out (mainly due to the drilling) but they are pretty decent quality (feel free ask here on the reflector for recommendations), and I can usually send them out within 48 hours of receiving your request. In the future, if order volume warrants, I may have to get FAR Circuits to make a bunch up for me, but the cost will probably increase just a bit. Currently, a board (either the KR5L or K6XX design) are being offered at $5 each ppd to your [stateside] mailbox. From anecdotal responses from builders, I tend to prefer the K6XX design a bit more since it appears to be more sensitive with regard to hearing weaker signals and more responsive with regard to 'following' the sent CW. I suggest you visit the web site of Sverre Holm, LA3ZA, and check out his implementation information as well: I have used the right-most LED for some years and I like it very much, see my K2 page: http://www.qsl.net/la3za/K2.html The schematic here for my latest version which runs of a fixed audio output: http://www.qsl.net/la3za/bilder/K2_amp.gif And here for an earlier version with the design philosophy described: http://www.qsl.net/la3za/QRP_Zero.html This circuit was published in G-QRP Sprat, Summer 2002 and in a German translation in QRP-Report, 3-2002. 73, Tom Hammond N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi I had a friend over a few weeks ago that is a captain for AA and flies 767's. I was working on his K2 and doing the final tune up when he asked me how to zero beat the sidetone. When I tuned up WWV and hit the sidetone button I told him to listen for the wow-wow sound of the beat. Suddenly he got it and said it is the same as balancing the speed of two aircraft engines when flying, something he had been doing for years. I think we have all heard the drone of two engines on an aircraft or boat but I had never thought of explaining a zero beat that way but that is exactly what it is. Thanks again to everyone who submitted a comment. 73s Jim W4ATK K2 #4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Re: SSTV and the K2
Thanks to all who replied to my query regarding the audio out of the K2 and receiving SSTV transmissions. I'm still on the left side of the learning curve, but all of your help has helped things go a lot smoother. Hope to 'see' you on 14.230 soon. Re: [Elecraft] CW AND CWR
Perry, You should be able to achieve equal tones on both CW and CWr (well, within 20 Hz). How are you doing the alignment? It is quite difficult and laborious if you are using a single frequency signal to align the filters. The use of a wideband noise generator and the Spectrogram display is highly recommended. If you want more detailed information on aligning the K2 filters, look at my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr article on K2 Dial Calibration - Step 3 details the CAL PLL part. As an added note, I have not yet changed the links to Tom Hammond's new website, so you will have to enter them manually rather than just clicking - his new site is www.n0ss.net. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - HELLO When aligning the Bfo,sfor cw then cwr I cant get the tones to stay the same I keep chasing out of the band pass of the filters... I am correct in thinking I should get the same tone when switching from cw to cwr Perry WA8THK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Re: K2 Remote/Server
I have written to the original post off the list where I think this belongs. There is no room for attacks here, takes up too much space and time for me. Hope you guys can work this out... this is a hobby and we need to keep our best feet forward... have you taken this up with Erik directly first? If not then it doesn't belong here. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Reports for 19 and 20 September
Wow, great signals this evening. 20 meters was wide open across the North American continent. I felt like a contester giving out 5NN over and over. Only a few folks were not that strong. There was some QSB from the East so Dan needed a relay through Bill to hear me. I could hear both of them just fine but Dan could not hear me well enough for solid copy. There were salmon fisherman spearing their catch left and right around us. Tom was having way too much fun to make him stop so we relayed back to him :) Thanks to everyone for joining us and to everyone who helped getting some of the weaker stations back to the NCS of the moment. I know we missed a few folks but I am not sure if they were pigs or salmon. Too many species out there this evening to make sense of it all. As ever any errors are mine, please tell me and I'll fix them. It was fun as always so please stop back and see us again soon, 73, Kevin.
