not resit the pleasure to
let the list know what I did, continents by continents ! I run QRP CW Mono Band

Congratulations Bob. Murphy struck here so could not get on much, but did
manage a JA on 40m around 1100Z Sunday - strange conditions. Oceania also
absent here, only KH6, VK and ZL on 40m. Fun to hear N.A. East Coast to West
Coast coming through on 40m at whatever time I could listen, even at 1100Z
ish.

did here you on early but lots of QSB here. You ranged
from 599+ to nothing. But my antenna here is a ground

the hurricanes. This was my first time checking into
the net. And the first time I checked into a CW net I

[Elecraft] re:K2 - Strange problem

2004-11-29 Thread Dave Sergeant
Stewart G3RXQ wrote:

I am wondering if any other K2 user has experienced the following.

NO receive when NOT on transmit.

VERY occasionally I get the my K2 stuck on what seems to be
transmit.

If I press the MODE button to select the VOX function the display
shows SPCH 0.2 then returns to the frequency display with the mode
(U or L) flashing. With no microphone connected and the POWER
control fully ACW their is no received audio out of the speaker.
Therefore one would think that the K2 is stuck on transmit. However,
I am able to select other VOX delays, RIT, XIT etc. These functions
are normally locked when on transmit with either VOX or PTT. If I
power my K2 OFF then ON sometimes I can get the same problem, but
more often than not the problem goes away. Because of the very
intermittent nature of the fault it will be really difficult to
track down. PTT operation always works fine.

Well this has happened to me just once. On Friday evening I was
downstairs and my station was all set up ready to start CQWW
upstairs. I was aware of what seemed to be someone tuning up -
seconds of tuning audio - but didn't bother to look in the shack.
When I came up a bit later just before getting some pre-contest
shuteye I found that the K2 had no audio and no signals. Not sure
what else was wrong, but it may indeed have been in transmit mode.
Panicking of the worst, I switched it off then on, and all seemed OK
again. I did speculate that the audio stage had overheated from the
tuning chap's loud audio and it needed a power up reset, but that is
pure speculation. The K2 continued to work perfectly for the whole of
the contest (40 hours of operating (!!) and the rig powered up right
through to the end), but you can imagine it got the adrenalin going
here

As for the contest, running 5W QRP, I had 837 QSOs, 210 total band
countries (77 countries overall) and 50 band zones. Claimed score is
298,062. 10m didn't really open and conditions were not that
brilliant, but there was plenty of DX around to work.

Mention has been made of abbreviated CW - A for 1, T for 0, and N for
9 are universal. U for 2 is less common but also used. EA8ZS was
taking it to the limit and sending VV for 33 which is pushing it a
bit as it sounded like 44 (but there are only 40 zones in CQWW!) and
you already had to train your ear not to misread the S in his call as
an I When using logging software it is academic as it puts in the
correct zone for you anyway. Use of abbreviated numbers in contests
with serial numbers causes no end of problems however...

[Elecraft] Simply Amazed - A Story of the K2

2004-11-29 Thread Lee Buller
Ladies and Gents,

I have been somewhat inactive for the last 8 months due to health issues with
my wife and myself. Never grow old! My wife broke her leg and I have
osteoarthritis that hampers my tower climbing let alone getting around home and
work. Myt wife and I are in our 50s and still think we are in our 20s. So, it
has been a discouraging year on the medical front. But,

This weekend, I was doing a little hamming withe the K2/100 and the KAT100.
What amazed me was the versatility of the KAT100. I screwed up this weekend by
accidentally switching to Antenna 2. You can do that very easily and not know
it. So, I got out the KAT100 book and started troubleshooting. After about 15
minutes (yea, I'm slow too), I discovered my mistake. It would work on all
bands except 20 meters. Well, everytime I went from band to band it would
switch in Ant 1 except on 20 where it went to Ant 2.

Well, I was pleased with myself for figuring that out but then started reading
more of the manual. I have not read the manual for quite some time. So, as I
was re-reading the manual I saw that the KAT 100 is a simple LC tuner. Now,
I've been reading on Eham recently about 1/2 wave antennas and also random wire
antennas. So, I started playing around with the KAT 100 on my 160 meter
Inverted-L. Now the Inverted-L is not perfect, but the KAT-100 matched it
quickly. Then, hey this should work on 80 and 40 too. It did quite well too.
Then I tried it on 30 meters and it worked like a champ. I have not put up
antennas for the new WARC bands so it was nice to know that I have at least 30
meters to work with. I have not tried to match the Inverted-L on the higher
bands because I was having to much fun have a QSO.

The KAT100 is a great tuner...as I said the the subject lineI am simply
amazed.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 - Filters adjustement

2004-11-29 Thread Steven Pituch

I used it after modification to inprove the filter rejection (positive)
and it helped a lot.
But I was not very glad with the results !
 CW 1.0 - 0.7 - 0.4 - 0.2
 LSB 2.4 - 2.0 - 1.8 - 1.6
 USB 2.4 - 2.0 - 1.8 - 1.6
 RTTY 1.8 - 1.5 - 1.0 - 0.6

Hi Bob,
I use MixW too. I was using it with my TS850 with its nice 8.8 mHz 270 Hz
filter for PSK31. With the MixW waterfall I could see that the Kenwood
filter was pretty much about 300 Hz wide. It was a pretty nice setup for
PSK31.

I have an old K2 (s/n 402) that has not yet been upgraded with all the
filter mods. I put the K2 in line with MixW and put in the 100 Hz wide CW
filter. Note that I have not aligned this rig in 5 years. The 100 Hz K2
filter outperformed the 270 Hz filter in the TS850. I would say that the K2
filter at the nominal 100 Hz setting was about 175 Hz wide as judged by
looking at the MixW waterfall and spectrum views. I'm sure using
Spectromgram would give a better esult.

I sold the TS850 to help pay for some K2 upgrades.

So the K2 filtering stands up to and surpasses one of the better analog
radios ever made. True - the filtering will not be IF Digital brick wall,
but with the addition of the AF DSP unit, and the good BDR and IMD numbers
that the K2 has, it should be tough to beat.

Steve

[Elecraft] K2 2597

2004-11-29 Thread john . brewer
My upgraded K2 did battle in the WWDX CW portion, with an outboard RM
auto-bandswitching amp.
I used my recently completed K0SS (thanks Tom) kitted tuning indicator, and it
SURE came in
handy with the filters screwed down tight. I was very impressed with the
capability of the K2
to hold its own in all the strong signals. I only got to play for about 4
hours, but the K2
performed very well, coupled with the Logger 32 software.

Fun stuff!

Now all I have to do is to figure out how to type during head copy!

[Elecraft] CQ WW DX CW...and Elecraft K2/100 #3311

2004-11-29 Thread J F
Well folks another contest weekend is gone...

The K2 was excellent: Some 600+ QSOs with over 400
multipliers. Not bad for hunt and pounce, may have
been a few more if 80 and 10 had been a bit livelier.
I even managed a few 160M QSOs, with a less than
efficient radiator...

The K2 worked well with the N1MM logging software. I
see there were a few K2 op's in the show.. hope all
had fun!

One item of note, while playing with the antennas (a
voltage feed 40M Half Square) I noticed an interesting
phenomenon. It seems that there is some sort of
feedback, if the antenna isn't tuned properly. This
causes the K2 to go into a keydown mode above about 50
Watts. You can escape it by lowering power or shutting
the rig off. Not sure why this happens, but retuned
the antenna and the problem ceased. Noticed when I
tried to tune the antenna with a shack located tuner
on 20M, the same situation occured. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the excellent rig Elecraft!

cheers,
Julius

[Elecraft] Re: purchase decision [K2/100 as ARES/ermergency rig]

2004-11-29 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your interest in the K2/100. I'm sure you'll get many
responses to your posting, but I thought I'd give you my perspective,
too:

I'm looking for a backup, portable, ares rig...

I think you'll find the K2 well-suited to an ARES application. It's
quite small, and weights just 5 pounds with the KPA100 module or the
internal battery installed. Current drain is extremely low for a
high-performance transceiver: less than 0.5 amp on receive with the
KPA100 module installed. If you ever had to run from a battery and/or
solar panel, you'd be on the air for a long time.

The K2/100 also has a companion automatic antenna tuner (KAT100) that's
quite rugged and can match a very wide range of ad-hoc or emergency
antennas. The KAT100-1 (slim package) can be installed directly
underneath the rig, forming a compact package.

Another unique feature of the K2/100 is that it has two DC input jacks:
an APP connector for the usual 20 amp supply, and a DC barrel jack for
powering just the 15-watt basic radio. If you have a backup supply (say
a small battery) connected to the barrel jack, and the 20 amp supply
goes down (due to loss of mains, etc.), the rig will keep right on
running at the 15-watt level. This is totally seamless -- you don't
even have to unkey the mic. The LCD will flash NO PA P.S. (no PA
power supply).

1 At low dc voltage, What is the power output of the k2/100?

The basic K2 is unusual in that it's designed to provide stable
operation from as low as 9 volts. Power will automatically roll back
(due to the programmable current limit) from 15 watts to between 2 and
5 watts as you approach this lower voltage limit. When using the PA, a
higher supply voltage is recommended (11 volts), but you'll be able to
use the PA even at the end-of-life voltage for a gel-cell (around 10 to
10.5 V) in a pinch. The K2 has a built-in voltmeter for monitoring
supply voltage, so it you suspect the voltage is low, you can check it
periodically and adjust the POWER control downward manually. You might
experiment with this ahead of time to gain some experience with
low-voltage operation.

2 Has anyone used the k2/100 on pactor III? Are the ssb filter widths
an issue?

The K2 meets the turnaround times for Pactor, although I haven't used
the rig in this mode myself. The SSB filter bandwidth should suffice
(about 2.2 to 2.4 kHz). This bandwidth was selected to provide good
punch when operating at low power.

3 The stock radio has 10 memories? Is there a way to expand this?

There are actually 20 memories: one per band that saves the last VFO
A/B setting on each, and 10 general-purpose memories. The modest number
of memories reflects the K2's low-power/high-performance pedigree; the
rig has a very efficient microcontroller that keeps internal RFI to a
minimum as well as drawing just a few mA.

You can use the memories for scanning, either continuously from VFO A
to B, or for channel-hopping, e.g. among the five fixed frequencies of
the 60 meter band. The VFO knob can even be programmed to channel hop
manually, especially useful on 60 meters and with VHF transverters.

If you control the radio from a computer, you can have unlimited
memories, since the computer can store and retrieve them and program
the radio. A number of radio-control and logging programs have been
adapted to work well with the K2.

[Elecraft] Control Board Strageness

2004-11-29 Thread Tim Cailloux
My Christmas project of the K2 build got started early (s/n 4539).

Here are the two problems I have right now:

* Display LCD (i.e. text readout) is very dim. It's almost impossible
to read with the backlight off. Everything displays as normal, but
just very dim text. (The LED backlight comes right on and is great.)

* When adjusting the pot on the control board (R1) for 3.80V per the
alignment procedure during the checkout of the control board and
display board, the most I can get is 3.6V.

The measured and reported supply voltage is 14.7-14.8V and the current
draw varies between 80 and 100 mA.

Yes, I've checked the solder joints. First item I looked at. I was
using a pretty bad DMM (since I started the build much sooner than I
planned, I didn't have everything with me) but I *think* the
resistance checks were all normal (I'm stealing a better DMM from work
this weekend).

Thanks in advance,

tim

I agree completely. Of course, a long dah is not necessary in these

1, ..., and N for 9.

But I guess that was the problem that the long dah was trying to conquer, that
is, to allow cut numbers in ambiguous situations. And I'll bet it was the
influence of Landline/American Morse proficiente who introduced that, since the
long dah was an actual element (eg. L and 0 (zero)).

Either way, I would nto advocate it in ambiguous situations.

 1, ..., and N for 9.

But I guess that was the problem that the long dah was trying to conquer, that
is, to allow cut numbers in ambiguous situations. And I'll bet it was the
influence of Landline/American Morse proficiente who introduced that, since
 the
long dah was an actual element (eg. L and 0 (zero)).

Either way, I would nto advocate it in ambiguous situations.

Of course, it is a bit tough to send a long dah with an electronic
keyer, which may partially explain the increased use of T.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: K1 10 turn pot

2004-11-29 Thread Don Brown
Hi

I have done this on a number of K1's. I used a Bourns pot with a metal shaft.
The part number from Mouser is 652-3540S-1-104. It cost about $15 with
shipping. It has a much nicer feel than the stock pot and is more rugged if the
knob takes a hit on the front. If you use a nut and lockwasher on the back
rather than the plastic washer it will move the knob closer to the front panel.
I think the knob looks better when mounted closer.

[Elecraft] Heil ProSet Plus with K2

2004-11-29 Thread Tom Althoff
FYI and FWIW -

I use the Heil ProSet Plus! with my Orion. I ordered the on sale Heil
Elecraft MD2 thinking it came with the adaptor for the 8 pin mic connector so I
could use my ProSet Plus! with both rigs and get a spare mike for only $15
morewrong! The 8 pin connector is soldered onto the cable of the MD2.
So if anyone else ordered an MD2 with the thought of doing the same thing they
will be disappointed.

I ordered the adaptor from Heil for $20. I then plugged the ProSet Plus! into
the K2 and I see no difference between the output of my MD2 and the ProSet
Plus! with either mike element selected...no mods needed in my K2 (good news!).

[Elecraft] Highest power supply voltage for K2?

2004-11-29 Thread Tom Althoff
I see old messages about undercharging the K2's internal battery if you don't
use more than 14VDC for the PS.I had a nice 15VDC 20W wall wart that I
thought would make a perfect PS/charger for the K2. The trouble is while
drawing 350ma in receive the K2 shows a supply voltage of 17.2 VDC. I turned
off the K2 immediately and turned to the Elecraft group for advice.

What is the absolute highest safe voltage you can pump into the K2 before you
start overheating the regulators etc?Could I squeek by with 17.2 VDC
without worrying about letting the smoke out of any of the internal componants?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Control Board Strangeness; Low AGC threshold

2004-11-29 Thread Mike, W8ENG
Tim, I had a similar problem with my K2. I was not able to get the full
3.8 volts with the pot cranked all the way over. Search 'Low AGC threshold
on the e-mail list archive for more info.

I was getting full brightness on the LCD display. I'm certinally no expert,
but sound like yuo may have a bad connection somewhere. When you bet the
better DVM, check the input voltage to the 8v regulator. It should be same
as the voltage at your power supply.

Good luck, and 73,

Subject: [Elecraft] K2: Control Board Strangeness

 Thanks in advance,

 tim

The K2 manual says 9 to 15 vdc

I'd be inclined to believe them if you want to keep the smoke inside those
components...

[Elecraft] K2 - Strange Problem ?

2004-11-29 Thread Stewart Baker
I think that I have found the problem, but have yet to work out a solution.

To combat the lack of TX audio system gain I have a 1 transistor pre-amp mounted
on the microphone header plug on the front panel board. This gives about 9dB of
gain which provides sufficient audio for the compressor IC and the VOX.
The amplifier is supplied from the 5V pin on the header. This rail is the 5A
supply which is used by the MCU logic, plus other functions.

The amplifier only draws about 1mA, however because of noise on the 5A line,
mainly from the LED bar graph I have had to heavily decouple the pre-amp supply
to stop the noise from being superimposed on my speech.

What I think is happening is that this decoupling is affecting the rise time of
the 5A line which is used for the MCU reset amongst other things.

I have tried reducing the value of decoupling. This seems to stop the strange
problem, but I am back with the noise. It is a shame that there is no way to get
at the +8V rail on the front panel board as that would be an ideal mic supply.

The way things are looking I will have to put the pre-amp outside my K2 and
power it separately. The only alternative seems to go back to shouting !

Re: [Elecraft] Highest power supply voltage for K2?

2004-11-29 Thread Tom Althoff
Bob G3VVT wrote ...a string of 1N4000 series 1A diodes could bring down the

I'm glad you mentioned it Bob. It's my favorite way to drop a DC supply a few
volts down. I have four 10amp rectifiers here which would give me 2.4V
drop..17.2 - 2.4 = 14.8.

The wall wart is rated at 15VDC but as Don pointed out the regulation on these
things is pretty poor and under no load I was experiencing 17VDC. Under a 1
amp load the voltage was 15.1. Since most of the time I'm not transmitting
under load I was hesitant to apply it until I checked here.

The manual that came with my K2 when discussing the output capacity of the PA
stages states on page 102 of the Theory of Operation...

The transmit strip is conservatively rated to provide excellent reliability
and immunity to high SWR. The same push-pull final could be pushed to over 40W
on the lower bands.

This is what let me to believe there might be some leeway. I doubt they were
talking about trying to draw 4 times as much current to get the 40W but to run
it at a higher voltage than was in the specs.

I just need something to keep the battery charged while I'm at the cabin. I
didn't want to bring my 10AMP boat anchor supply so the wall wart was a small,
though less than optimum, solution.

I'll eventually add Don's smart charger hookup to help extend the life of the
battery.

Thanks to all who answered.

Most manufacturers seem to give 16V as the upper sustained voltage limit for
DC input on 12V equipment. The 2SC1969 PA transistors are rated at this in
their data sheets and the regulators seem to come out at 25V as their maximum
input so should not represent a problem.

Faced with the situation you have with 1.2V above the 16V normal limit a
string of 1N4000 series 1A diodes could bring down the voltage to what you
require. Normal forward voltage drop comes out somewhere near 0.6V per diode,
so two in series would probably fit the bill. Used this technique to power a
Sony 2001 SW broadcast radio I had in the Middle East for over 20 years needing
4.5VDC power source.
