[Elecraft] Re: KX1 encoder

2005-01-27 Thread Bill or Lisa Shappley

Fred, K6DGW wrote:

I've noticed recently that the VFO shaft encoder doesn't seem to count
reliably. I usually run in the 100 Hz resolution, and turning it slowly
in the increasing frequency direction will sometimes result in a 100 or
200 Hz decrease. The key seems to be slowly, going faster seems to be
ok. I am sure this is recent (last few weeks) and wasn't a problem when
I first finished the kit.

Is this a common problem? Is it fixable? I finished bought the kit at
Pacificon in Oct 04 and finished it a couple of weeks later. I will
admit that my KX1 is getting quite a bit of use ... I worry the K2 is
feeling like an ignored step-child these days.

Yep, mine (KX1 #702) does it also, and only on the highest resolution
setting. I don't know exactly how the
encoder output is patterned, but it seems like it may have something to
do with the increased shaft play
or wobble associated with the pushbutton function also built in to the
encoder, perhaps allowing the encoder
to start off in the wrong direction briefly when you start to rotate
it. I have never reported it
because it is just a very minor irritation, and really doesn't interfere
with my being able to set any freq I want.

2005-01-27 Thread Robert C. Abell

Hi Jeff,
Congrats on finishing your K2 # 3375!
Judging by the S/N you've had the kit awhile.
Just a tip regarding programming your filters for SSB, be sure to follow
the instructions in the K2SB manual, you will get much better results.

Have you added the latest mods, if not I recommend that you do so.
I recommend that if you intend to use the K2 extensively on SSB that you
consider adding the KPA100 amplifier, it makes a real difference when
you can be heard, 10 watts just isn't enough power for consistant SSB
contacts.
Keep us informed. Will look for you on the Trans Provincial Net on 7.055
mhz.

[Elecraft] KDSP2 Troubleshooting

2005-01-27 Thread Don Lerche
Hello all,

Have just completed the K2DSP and all appears to to work FB, except for a
loud pop on power up. The troubleshooting section of the manual indicates
that this may be down to a problem with the mute circuitry.

As an initial check, went through the voltage chart and compared my results,
with the following differences (manual value in brackets)
U1-5 = 5v (0v)
U1-14 = 0v (5v)
U1-15 through U1-19 = 5v (0v)
D3-C = 5v (0v)

The interesting difference is U1-14 which I believe is the MUTE output from
U1 and which according to the manual should be at 5v but I have 0v. If
however pin 14 was at 5v then looking at the diagram Q7 would be turned on,
yet the table has voltages showing Q7 is off. Have I got this wrong, or is
the manual incorrect? Why do other pins have different voltages to the
manual, even though the DSP functions all appear to be working OK?

The other active part of the mute circuitry is the pair of FETs Q5 Q6, and
I am a bit concerned that one or both of these may be damaged. During the
install, it is not until page 10 when it states that Q5 Q6 are sensitive
to static. In all the previous Elecraft builds I've done, if any transistors
were static sensitive, they were put into the conductive foam along with the
ICs, but in my KDSP2 package they were just loose in the bag with the bulk
of the rest of the components. As a consequence,I never thought to take any
special anti-static precautions hadling these during the inventory check. Is
there a quick way of checking their fuctionality before ordering
replacements?

Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: [Elecraft] Soldering stations, sources, and costs (was: no subject)

2005-01-27 Thread Craig Rairdin
I need some recommendations on a soldering
station and also approx cost if you know it.

I'm having good luck with the Hakko 936 I bought from www.wassco.com for
$88.50.

Read the recommendations scattered throughout the Elecraft site (Builder
Resources has several articles) and you'll find all you need for tools at
Wassco.

I tried using Digi-Key (www.digikey.com) but what a horrible Web site!!
They've scanned their print catalog into PDFs and you have to copy the part
number from the catalog into an order form. This is like e-commerce circa
1995. The only thing lamer would be if they just gave you the PDFs for the
catalog and had you print out an order form and mail it in.

Mouser (www.mouser.com) was slightly better but still has a print catalog
orientation. You can't get to pictures of anything until you follow several
layers of links, and then it's PDFs of their catalog pages with tiny line
drawings. At least you don't have to copy the part numbers to the order
form.

Wassco is organized by product category and manufacturer and has nice color
pictures of everything they sell. They have a print catalog you can view
online, but it's not necessary to look at it in order to place an order. I
didn't bother to figure out if their prices were more expensive than the
other sources because it was so hard to figure anything out on those other
sites.

As a person who has put together several Web sites including rolling my own
e-commerce site, the process of buying tools for my K1 project was an
interesting study in Web design and marketing. It's interesting that an
industry that might be considered high tech (i.e. electronic parts and
supplies) seems to lag non-tech industries (to pick one entirely at
random: check out the simplicity of ordering knitting supplies at
www.purlsoho.com).

[Elecraft] Which Mods Are Applicable??

2005-01-27 Thread Jim Harris
If this is a repost I apologize. I posted the same
question yesterday and have not seen the post or any
response.

In trying to cover all be bases before order a K2 with
many of the bells and whistles I've found reference to
modifications. In reviewing the elecraft website
I've found a listing of something like 50
modifications. Some list serial number applicability.
Others do not. The description of some modifications
seem vague to me at this point.

How does one determine which should/need be purchased?
If needed why are they not included with the
appropriate kit? It appears I could spend a hundred
dollars or more on modifications to make a new radio
work. That could wreck my radio budget.

Thanks for the help,

2005-01-27 Thread Michael Bowles

Hi, all,
I believe Isolated Tip refers to the tip being isolated from the
power to the heating element, not isolated from ground. If memory serves,
this was to distinguish this type from the gun type where the tip was a
part of the heating element circuit and had voltage applied to it by a
transformer. I think all, or virtually all pencil type irons these days are
isolated tip.

first look at the serial Nr of Your K2 (if new one will be arround 4500 UP.

The surf to page:

On the page You have almost all data You need:

It depends on lots of things and of mode in wich the rig will be used (If
CW only,10W or 100W,SSB,contest,ragchew ecc)

My mods:

Keyklicks mod,
Bandpass filters mod by DL7MAJ (EU only)
Strong signals mod
SSB cristal filter mod to 2,5kHz
KPA100 mod for 80m instability
CW Side ton mod
Rf blocking on SSB input mod
High compression ratio mod
ALC mod
Autodetect diodes for straight key
More roll of low frequency response mod

And I'm not done yet...some minor mods are still waiting for me...

Some of mods made by me, will not be needed, because are already done by
manufacturer on models 4K-up (look at notes on the right side of LA3ZA
page.)

Re: [Elecraft] Which Mods Are Applicable??

2005-01-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Jim,

If you are ordering a new K2 kit, you don't need any of the mods - all the
'standard' ones are already incoprporated into the design.

If you have (or are buying) and older K2, look first and most at those mods
that have been incorporated into the current K2 design. That number is much
smaller than all the mods published on Sverre's website. If you have a
pre-SN3000 K2 that you would like to bring up to date, the best starting
point is with the A to B mod that is packaged by Elecraft (along with the
optional mods mentioned in the A to B instructions), incorporates many of
the earlier changes. Beyond the A to B mods, the Temperature Compensated
PLL change, the Keying Waveshape mod, the addition of D40 and D41 for high
level on frequency signal handling are the additional changes you need to
bring your K2 up to date - of course, some of the changes require updated
firmware, but the Elecraft site is helpful in determining what you need.

Many of the other mods listed in Sverre's webpage are additional changes
that some K2 owners have found helpful because they have had special needs
or conditions (the European 40 meter bandpass filter changes for instance).
You should review these carefully while considering whether or not you have
a similar need or condition with your K2 before applying that mod, and some
may change the operation of the K2 to suit a particular operator's taste -
for instance, my mod to separate the CW PTT from the Dot paddle line is not
desirable unless you have a need to add that function, VHF folks who run a
sequencer chain may need it, or contest ops who want to use a footswitch on
CW, or SO2R stations that need to use PTT steering would need that function,
but the majority of others would only find it bothersome.

I hope that helps a bit with your selection and decisions.

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] Which Mods Are Applicable??

2005-01-27 Thread John R. Lonigro

Jim:

I guess my approach would be to buy and build the basic K2 first. My S/N
3401 just missed having the temperature stability mod included (I think
they started with S/N 3425 or so). Anyway, the only mod I ended up
making on it was that one. I am totally happy with the radio in that
configuration. Looking back on things, I probably didn't even need the
temp stability mod, since I'm not planning to add the amplifier. I added
several options, but have made no other mods. I've heard the key click
mod is another important one, and I might end up building that one, but
for now I'm happy with what I have.

I believe that if there were truly any important mods that needed to be
made before the radio performed well, they would have been included with
the basic kit. It works well right out of the box - after many hours of
soldering (hi).

My 2 cents worth.

Am I correct in thinking that this would not be an ESD safe iron?

Believe the isolated tip is done for another reason which was the ability to
work on live circuits. Even the venerable Weller TCP soldering iron system
had a version that used the 2 wire power supply the PS2D. On this the
soldering iron tip was not connected directly to ground, but instead to a a
potential
balance terminal on the PSU that allowed it to be connected to the workbench
static ground for working on static sensitive components or working on live
circuits.

Re: [Elecraft] Isolated tip

2005-01-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
OK folks, I will try an entire re-write to get the info out. Prior attemps
were rejected because of some offenive word(s) in the body.

I discovered that I had modified my Soloman station 5 years ago. I added
one 1 meg resistor from a wire that does connect to the tip shell to the
grounding post on the back and another 1 meg resistor from the grounding
post to the line cord ground wire, so my soldering station does have an ESD
discharging path to ground. Easy to do, and I will supply details if anyone
asks.

[Elecraft] SSB adapter, T1

2005-01-27 Thread Kevin Stover

Hello all.

Working on the SSB adapter for K2/100 #4684 and have come up against
problem. I have continuity between all four pads of T1. The toroid
itself check out while out of the board. No shorts. The short only
happens when the toroid is soldered in the board.

I have removed it twice to make sure the insulation between turns is
intact and don't see any bridges on the board.

A swift kick in the right direction would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] HexKey

2005-01-27 Thread John Meade
I just received Hex Key s/n 113. So far, I like it. It is smooth and heavy,
and I have not had a problem making the adjustments.

Now to try it on the air!

Re: [Elecraft] SSB adapter, T1

2005-01-27 Thread k4zm

Kevin:

That is perfectly ok. If you look at the schematic, one terminal of each
side of the transformer is connected to ground. This ties the two windings
togethter DC wise but not RF wise.

[Elecraft] SSB adapter, T1

2005-01-27 Thread Kevin Stover

Thanks to all who responded on what I thought was a problem.
You were all right. If I had looked at the schematic I'd have seen that
the windings do have continuity for DC. I got into that toroid winding
state of mind and didn't think to check the schematic.

Thanks and 73
