Easier than trimming (and maybe lengthening!) window line is the following:
wrap a piece of aluminum foil about 1 foot (30 cm) wide around the ladder line.
Slide it around on the line until you find a place where all the bands are
within matching range. You can use more than one piece of foil if it helps.

You have made a capacitor whose effect on the impedance will be greater as you
approach a voltage loop for a particular band. I have done this successfully
with a few hundred watts -- it probably would not be good for very QRO
situations where the voltage loops can reach thousands of volts, but it should
be safe for your KX1 :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Tuning 88' with KX1 autotuner?

2005-02-20 Thread Rick Dettinger
Jim - That is my antenna, currently installed as an inverted vee with
center at 40 feet. I have about 80 feet of window line. I just tried it
with my KX1 using an Elecraft 4:1 balun. [Usually, I use an outboard Z
match tuner (NORCAL)]. On 40 meters, I got an SWR reading of 2.3 while 30
and 20 meters were 1.1 and 1.0 respectively. I could probably get the SWR
on 40 meters down by changing the feed line length. Of course, this would
change the other bands. The balanced antennas are harder to match than the
end fed wires recommended in the KX1 ATU manual. I get close to 1.0 on all
3 bands with an end fed 80 foot wire sloping up to 30 feet and a 33 foot
wire laid on the ground. I highly recommend the KX1 for portable use.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for February 21st, 2005

2005-02-20 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening All,
At z the 20 meter band fell silent. Then, out of this silence
sprang the Elecraft CW Net. Folks were not too tired to slow down from 40
wpm contesting speed to check in. 17 folks on the first net and 12 on the
second one. The bands were not worn out but seemed quite good across the
continent. Alaska to Florida and New York to California. Pretty good
geographic spread. K1s, K2s, and KX1s were represented as well as the odd
glow bug instrument.
Ken, W0CZ, won the coldest town award and was going for two during the
second net. 12 degrees F is a bit chilly. Palmer, Alaska and Greely,
Ontario, Canada could not beat that mark. There was a bit of snow out
East but not too much for the folks in ND, PA, and IN to handle. No
reports of snow or cold from Colorado though. A few new faces and a lot
of familiar ones. Nice mix all around. But, on to the lists.

[Elecraft] K1 Voltage

2005-02-20 Thread Glenn Haffly
I have a K1 with a voltage problem on U1.
All pin voltages are correct except for pin 6 which is zero.
The schematic show C19 blocking DC to pin 6. I suppose
there is an internal connection with pin 7 that creates the
6 volts for pin 6 ? On my schematic pin 7 is not connected
to anything. Anyone recommend U1 be replaced or have I
overlooked something ?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Glenn , K5ZE

Re: [Elecraft] wiring motorola amplified speaker for K2

Tim,

These speakers were designed to be driven by balanced audio. That's why the
audio input names are a bit unusual. The squelch line was designed to mute the
speaker, as was pointed-out in an earlier posting.

I have had some trouble with mine being sensitive to RFI. I haven't got it
licked yet, but I'm still trying.

[Elecraft] First Contest With K2 # 4616

2005-02-20 Thread Thomas Magera

K2 4616 built by Alan W1HYV had its first major workout in the QRP all band
category during ARRL CW over the weekend. Didn't have as much time to operate
as last year (3rd place) but the results of a casual operation were:

Band QSOs Country

1.8 1 1

3.5 44 35

  7 131 53

14 16051

21 14951

28 26 1 8

Total 511 209

Score: 319,143

The K2 is amazing! The receiver / DSP is the best I have ever used. The
reduction in operating fatigue during S&P operation is significant .. I was
able to work stations in the noise that I couldn't hear with my other QRP
radios. KH6 & TF on 80M were good examples.

Thanks to Eric and Wayne for a great design it is world class!!

Also many thanks to Alan for a great job with the construction.(My manual
dexterity isn't what it used to be and I wasn't comfortable with the K2 as a
first effort.).

[Elecraft] Tuning 88'

2005-02-20 Thread Steve L.

For reference, I have tuned this exact 88' CF doublet
with 75' of balanced feedline with the K2 ATU and it
easily tunes on all bands and modeles very well on
40-10.

I used a homebrew 1:1 current balun right before it
went into the BNC connector of the K2. Operating in
the field on a battery for FYBO in the hail, I drew
big static arcs to my EARS through my HEADPHONES until
I ran a simple static ground from the K2's GND post to
a nail pushed into the soil. What a Shocker! (sorry).

I made my doublet AND feedline from 26AWG 19-strand
copper weld wire intended for balloon lift that is
VERY strong and flexible but doesn't twist or kink and
seems to weigh nothing. I highly recommend it for a
field antenna:

I entered the ARRL DX test casually this weekend to

I'm using it SO2R with an FT1000MP, both connected to

Again I'm struck at how well this radio performs under
contest conditions. Somehow Elecraft needs to get some
K2/100's in the hands of QRO contesters so they can
see it just LOOKS like a toy (not an insult).

While it takes multiple key presses to get some things
done, it's multiple presses of the SAME key and is
very easy to learn.

I was going to buy a Ten Tec Orion for my 2nd radio,
chose to go the cheaper route of just updating my K2
for QRO -- sure am glad I did!

[Elecraft] New awards & announcement.

2005-02-20 Thread Larry Makoski W2LJ

To all Elecrafters,

Due to the inspiration of Arnold Olean KØZK, I am happy to announce two
new Elecraft Awards. Arnold has already earned the first and is the
proud owner of certificate #001.

The new award that Arnold has earned is the Elecraft "50 in 50" Award.
This is earned by using your Elecraft rig(s) to work another Elecraft
rig in each of the 50 United States. This does not replace the existing
Elecraft Worked All States Award - it just brings it to a new and
separate level.

In the same vein, I am also announcing the new Elecraft "100 in 100"
Award. This award can be earned by using your Elecraft rig(s) to work
another Elecraft rig in 100 different DXCC entities (as defined by the
ARRL DXCC department). Again, this does not replace the existing
Elecraft Century Club Award. This one is totally different and
introduces an exciting new challenge. Is it possible to even achieve
this award?  As Elecraft becomes more and more popular around the globe;
and as we have seen Elecraft rigs being taken on major DXpeditions - the
answer has to be "yes"; but it will be a challenge!

Full details on how to apply will be forthcoming in the next few days.
For now, the application for the "50 in 50" Award will be the same as
for the basic "Elecraft Worked All States" Award with the added
provision that you must supply the model and serial number of each
Elecraft rig that you have worked.

I welcome any and all comments, questions and suggestions - please
contact me off list via [EMAIL PROTECTED]

73 es happy operating!

Re: [Elecraft] Which Rig to Buy

2005-02-20 Thread Lonnie Juli
How about a K1 on 160 and 80 and a KX1 for 40, 30 and 20? You could always
pack another KFL1-2 for 17 and 15 if you wanted.

Lots of bands, great rigs and it'll all fit in one small case.

My K1 is set up for 80 and 40 now as I hardly ever have room for a 160
antenna but it's about the same. I Take the K2 when I have an easy trip, but
the small rigs all have padded Pelican cases and they go everywhere!

Both great rigs and the KX1 gives you SWL capability.

Build both!

[Elecraft] K2/100 magnetic screening?

2005-02-20 Thread Fraser Robertson
Has anyone successfully improved the K2's immunity to magnetic fields, e.g.
from nearby mains transformers?

I'm thinking of making a mu-metal cover to enclose the K2 (apart from front
and rear), leaving room for air circulation top and bottom. I think this
should do the trick, but wondered if less drastic action would surfice, e.g.
lining the bottom panel with steel or mu-metal.

In my case the nearest mains transformers are two feet away or more, off to
the sides and rear, and it's not really practical to increase the separation
further. I've had reports of less than T9 and tests indicate it's due to
these transformers, one in the linear amp. and one in the linear PSU that
powers the K2/100. No problem on receive, but the magnetic field is
obviously stronger during TX.

Thanks / 73 Fraser G4BJM #4368.

It might be a fun science project to build this into a KX1 case and
remote a few of the knobs and buttons to the K2 over a digital link
using the KIO2. Microchip even makes a PIC with a transmitter in it
(the rfPIC). Audio back channel could be through a cheap FM BCB Part 15
transmitter plugged into the K2 headphone jack, or just a loud speaker
in the shack.

That would take care of my "dream keyer" idea. Heh heh heh. Actually, I
have gone the other way with keyers. I eliminated it altogether by
connecting a straight key directly to the K1 jack! It allows me to make dits
and dahs my way. Also turned out to be a hardy choice for the trail. It is
smaller, lighter and less fragile than any paddle of comparable quality.

[Elecraft] K1 Builders

2005-02-20 Thread G. Krämer

 Hello K1 builders,

I am currently (since Autumn last year) building K1 (no. 1550). It is
the first kit I am building and I am droping from problem into next
problem. Looks like soldering isn't my thing. Perhaps someone can help
with my actual problem. I have reached chapter 7. When I am doing the
LED-test the ATTN LED first turn on briefly yellow, then the RIT/XIT
turns on green and then red (instead of orange), finally the ATTN LED
turns on again briefly orange. Any idea why?

The other thing is that the rig sucks (all LED off) 83 mA and 93 mA
(instead of around 55mA, mentioned in the manual).

It does most of the alignment and test in chapter 7 the correct way, but
I can't do receiver alignment as described in the KFL1-4 Manual. Even
using a hamradio transceiver on a dummy and a short piece of wire in the
antenna jacked I don't hear anything. First the rig is very quite, but
then - suddenly when doing some manipulations on it (but I can't find
out a specific manipulation that causes it) there is a lot of noise in
the loudspeaker (and the S-Meter shows on full scale).

If someone has any idea pleas give me a hint. Thanks very much!

Mike and all,

There is a note in the "What's New" section of the Elecraft Builder's
Resource webpage that says a PLL Range of 8.8 to 18 kHz range is OK. It
seems that information has not made it into the Errata pages yet, butr I
expcet it soon.

As I understand things, a narrow PLL range is better than a wide one - the
PLL reference will be more stable.

[Elecraft] K2 PLL Ref. Osc. Range Too Narrow

2005-02-20 Thread MikeH

Hello Group,

I'm building my first K2, purchased about two months ago, and I've hit
a little bump during alignment and test (part 2).

During the PLL Reference Oscillator Range Test I came up with too
narrow a range (9.37 kHz somewhat below the 9.8 minimum)). My high
freq. ref. during the test was 12099.95, and the low was 12090.58). I
gather that my low point is not low enough. I did check the components
listed in the trouble-shooting section (D16, D17, C84, C85. L31) and
they are ok. I have also checked all soldering, and it looks fine.

I have looked over many of the messages on the list, but still wanted
to put out a request for help to those experienced with the K2. I have
seen some reference to a range as low as 9.1 kHz being ok (others say
it needs to be at least 9.8). I have also read that going to an L31
value of 12 uH is a solution.

Anyway, as always, helpful comments are welcome.

Mike/NR7F
