One phone call, on which Scott spent 15 minutes helping me identify a $0.25 part and it was here 3 days later (across the continent to N.J.). Elecraft service has a well deserved good reputation. I have found it to be as close to perfection as you can get. This reflector and the phone support are phenomenal. RE: [Elecraft] Help Identify a Balun
Jeff. One sure way is to connect a 50 ohm dummy load across the screw terminals and measure the impedance with an antenna analyzer. 7MHz is a good frequency to use. If it is a1:1 balun the analyzer will read 50 ohms. If it is a 4:1 balun, the analyzer will read about 12 ohms. Alternatively apply power with a transmitter through a SWR meter, and measure the SWR. [Elecraft] ECN/30 report
Last night, I ended up calling on 10.112.7 because I was hearing some occasional broadband digital QRM on 10.102.7, and someone was calling near 10.107.2 just before the net started. The one and only check-in was Rick/WA3TUU in Michigan. Next week, I'm going to try calling the net one hour later (0100z - 8E/7C/6M/5P) to take advantage of the longer spring evenings and folks who get home later. If this works well, we may end up transitioning to 0100z (9E/8C/7M/6P) for spring when DST takes effect next month. I will be calling for check-ins on one of the following frequencies: 10.102.7 10.107.2 10.112.7 10.117.2 10.122.7 10.127.2 ... If we get QRM'd - I will most likely move to the next clear frequency on the list. 72/73, Daniel AA0NI Oklahoma City K2 #3421 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Getting ready to buy a K2. Request your input
Hello all, I'm getting ready to order my K2 and would like your input on what options and mods I should get based on the following: I just upgraded to General class and have zero experience on HF bands. My boy/girl 17 year old twins have there tech license and are getting ready to test for there General. So this project is going to be a family made and ran rig. Since I live in an apartment, I want a low power rig. I also think the challenge of trying to work the world on low power is going to be a lot of fun. I also envision taking this rig camping a lot. I want to use CW and SSB. At some point down the road I will start adding transverters. I have a hearing problem that causes me not understand anything being said to me if I get input from two differant souces. Like being on the phone and someone in the room starts talking to me. Because of this I will be getting the Proset-K2 Headset. I have excellent soldering skills, so have no fear of tackling this type to project. I plan to get involved in emergency communications in my local area. My son has already completed his Emergency Management training for the county and will want to take the rig to his on going training sessions. I think that about covers it. Robert The first option I would recommend is the KAT2 ATU for the K2. With it you can take the rig anywhere, and load darned near anything for an antenna. I have lots of loose batteries here, so don't use the internal battery. But if you expect to do a lot of demos for folks, the battery would be a nice accessory. SSB and audio filtering (analog or DSP) can come later as you decide you need them. I agree with Bob. I'd add the SSB module though, since that's a mode you want. Not only does it give you SSB, but it opens the door to play with digital modes like PSK31 as well. Was he wearing an anti-static strap? It's probably okay anyway. It surely is if it didn't come off of the foam. The stereo jack can be added whenever it shows up. You won't even use it unless you use the T1 with a Yaesu FT817 or you decide to modify another rig for remote control. The T1 is fully-functional as a stand-alone tuner. And just think, when the jack is in place on the tuner main board, you can show off your T1's innards and proudly exclaim to your audience You wouldn't BELIEVE where parts of this tuner have been... On second thought, you can order a replacement guaranteed not to have been attacked by gastric acids from Elecraft... Just check the parts list and give 'em a call. [Elecraft] Re: K2 Receiver Instability
On March 9, I posted the following: My K2/100 #1130 has developed an odd instability. When first turned on, the receiver seems unable to lock on frequency, so that CW signals have a warble to them. After a few seconds to a minute or more, the receiver stabilizes. The instability returns after each band change and often occurs when I change the XFIL setting. I don't know if this condition manifests itself in the transmitted signal. snip Do any of you kind souls have an idea where I should concentrate my trouble-shooting efforts? I receive postings in digest mode, so direct e-mail as well as posts to the reflector would be most appreciated. I'll endeavor to inform the group of the outcome. Rich Lentz, KE0ZX, came right back with this advice: My best guess is that you neglected to solder a pin or have a cold solder joint on U4 - the PLL synthesizer. Quite often an un-soldered pin will work for a year or more, then oxidation causes it to go intermittent and then not work at all. Check solder connections for the parts on the top half of sheet 1 of 4 of RF Board. Next I would check voltages and that should give you an idea of where there could be a problem. I finally got around to tackling this job today and am very pleased to report that Rich was right on when he suggest checking connections around U4. I resoldered perhaps 50 to 75 connections and, when I put the rig back in service, the instability had gone. (BTW, the transmitted signal was also rotten) .Thanks Rich!! Hi Guys, K2 #4049 w/KPA100 + KAT100. Working without any problems for almost a year. Was running MMTTY @ 25 wts today. After returning to receive K2 locked up, no audio not able to do anything. Turned it off and back on and all was normal except could not access menu. Turned it off again and left it for a couple of hours, turned back on and am getting info 201 then ELECRAFT then 7100 plus some hum from speaker. Where to check first when I open it up? Thanks guys.
