2005-03-25 Thread Robert McGwier
One phone call, on which Scott spent 15 minutes helping me
identify a $0.25 part and it was here 3 days later (across
the continent to N.J.). Elecraft service has a well deserved
good reputation. I have found it to be as close to perfection
as you can get. This reflector and the phone support are
phenomenal.

Hi All,

I was working on the RF board of K2 4777 and found that capacitor C225 was
missing. A 390 pf, NPO type. I sent in a request for the missing part a
few minutes ago.

If any of you have had missing parts, how long does it normally take for
Elecraft to get one shipped off to you?

Thanks,

I typed the Model # incorrectly. It is UB-1. Wayne Burdick pointed me to a
reference to a coaxial Ultrabal. The one I have is not a coaxial balun. It
is a tube 6.75 inches long and 1.25 inch in diameter. It has an SO-239 on
one end, and screw terminals on the other end. If no one can identify this I
can take it into work and x-ray it.

RE: [Elecraft] Help Identify a Balun

2005-03-25 Thread Charles Greene

Jeff.

One sure way is to connect a 50 ohm dummy load across the screw terminals
and measure the impedance with an antenna analyzer. 7MHz is a good
frequency to use. If it is a1:1 balun the analyzer will read 50 ohms. If
it is a 4:1 balun, the analyzer will read about 12 ohms. Alternatively
apply power with a transmitter through a SWR meter, and measure the SWR.

Sounds like a 1:1 bead balun around a coax interior.

[Elecraft] ECN/30 report

2005-03-25 Thread Daniel Reynolds
Last night, I ended up calling on 10.112.7 because I was hearing some
occasional broadband digital QRM on 10.102.7, and someone was calling near
10.107.2 just before the net started. The one and only check-in was Rick/WA3TUU
in Michigan.

Next week, I'm going to try calling the net one hour later (0100z -
8E/7C/6M/5P) to take advantage of the longer spring evenings and folks who get
home later. If this works well, we may end up transitioning to 0100z
(9E/8C/7M/6P) for spring when DST takes effect next month.

I will be calling for check-ins on one of the following frequencies:

10.102.7
10.107.2
10.112.7
10.117.2
10.122.7
10.127.2
...

If we get QRM'd - I will most likely move to the next clear frequency on the
list.

[Elecraft] Getting ready to buy a K2. Request your input

2005-03-25 Thread Robert Jones
Hello all,

I'm getting ready to order my K2 and would like your
input on what options and mods I should get based on
the following:

I just upgraded to General class and have zero
experience on HF bands. My boy/girl 17 year old twins
have there tech license and are getting ready to test
for there General. So this project is going to be a
family made and ran rig.

Since I live in an apartment, I want a low power rig.
I also think the challenge of trying to work the
world on low power is going to be a lot of fun. I
also envision taking this rig camping a lot.

I want to use CW and SSB. At some point down the road
I will start adding transverters.

I have a hearing problem that causes me not understand
anything being said to me if I get input from two
differant souces. Like being on the phone and someone
in the room starts talking to me. Because of this I
will be getting the Proset-K2 Headset.

I have excellent soldering skills, so have no fear of
tackling this type to project.

I plan to get involved in emergency communications in
my local area. My son has already completed his
Emergency Management training for the county and will
want to take the rig to his on going training
sessions.

I think that about covers it. Again, I would like to
get everything up front and would really appreciate
any and all suggestions on what add-ons to get to make
my K2 a great unit.

Thanks for your time,
Robert

The first option I would recommend is the KAT2 ATU for the K2.
With it you can take the rig anywhere, and load darned near anything
for an antenna. I have lots of loose batteries here, so don't use
the internal battery. But if you expect to do a lot of demos for
folks, the battery would be a nice accessory.
SSB and audio filtering (analog or DSP) can come later as you decide
you need them.
Good luck and 73

I agree with Bob. I'd add the SSB module though, since that's a mode you
want. Not only does it give you SSB, but it opens the door to play with
digital modes like PSK31 as well.

[Elecraft] Linus (The T1 Eating Maching) Update

Hi All,

Seems like I'm giving folks a good laugh, and I don't blame you.
Unbelievable, isn't it? Anyway, the parts inventory fortunately yielded good
news.
The only part that seems to be missing is the stereo jack, which I assume will
show up later I even found all the little LED spacers! When I caught
Linus in the act, he was chewing on the foam padding with the processor on
it, but doesn't look like he did anything to the processor
itself---hopefully!!! If he wasn't so darn cute and innocent looking I'd

should add his picture to my QSL card equipment list!

Hmmm... Was he wearing an anti-static strap? It's probably okay anyway. It
surely is if it didn't come off of the foam.

The stereo jack can be added whenever it shows up. You won't even use it
unless you use the T1 with a Yaesu FT817 or you decide to modify another rig
for remote control. The T1 is fully-functional as a stand-alone tuner.

And just think, when the jack is in place on the tuner main board, you can
show off your T1's innards and proudly exclaim to your audience You
wouldn't BELIEVE where parts of this tuner have been...

On second thought, you can order a replacement guaranteed not to have been
attacked by gastric acids from Elecraft... Just check the parts list and
give 'em a call. That is after very carefully checking the patio. The jack
is very small and very black and very easy to miss.

I assume at some point the gubmint will order a large numner of T1s and feed
them to the dog, in order to have units that can be used in any environment

and escape detection since they will look like normal leavings.

Working backwards, it boggles the imagination to ponder the type of animal they
will feed K2/100s to to achieve the same camoflage effect.

[Elecraft] KSB2

2005-03-25 Thread BPCI
I just got a bargain KSB2 for my K2 (#4615). It was delivered to the seller
12/5/99. Do I need to make any changes before I install it in my K2. Any
advice will be appreciated. U1 has the following numbers on it - PIC16C72 -
04/SP
and 9852HAN, Also it has a little tag hand written saying SSB 102. I don't
plan to use anything but CW, but thought it should be something I should have,
and the price was right. Thanks, Ci

[Elecraft] Addition to Awards Page

2005-03-25 Thread Larry Makoski

Fellow Elecrafters,

I've made an addition to the Awards Page at
http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/index%20page%2010.html

Underneath the table which shows the various awards, there is a link to
the Elecraft Awards Holders Hall of Fame.

This page will show you the up-to-date, latest list of who has earned
each award; and when they earned it.

[Elecraft] Re: K2 Receiver Instability

2005-03-25 Thread Todd Fonstad

On March 9, I posted the following:

My K2/100 #1130 has developed an odd instability. When first turned on,
the

receiver seems unable to lock on frequency, so that CW signals have a
warble to them. After a few seconds to a minute or more, the receiver
stabilizes. The instability returns after each band change and often occurs
when I change the XFIL setting. I don't know if this condition manifests
itself in the transmitted signal.

snip

Do any of you kind souls have an idea where I should concentrate my
trouble-shooting efforts? I receive postings in digest mode, so direct
e-mail as well as posts to the reflector would be most appreciated.

I'll endeavor to inform the group of the outcome.

Rich Lentz, KE0ZX, came right back with this advice:

My best guess is that you neglected to solder a pin or have a cold solder
joint on U4 - the PLL synthesizer. Quite often an un-soldered pin will work
for a year or more, then oxidation causes it to go intermittent and then not
work at all. Check solder connections for the parts on the top half of
sheet 1 of 4 of RF Board.

Next I would check voltages and that should give you an idea of where there
could be a problem.

I finally got around to tackling this job today and am very pleased to
report that Rich was right on when he suggest checking connections around
U4. I resoldered perhaps 50 to 75 connections and, when I put the rig back
in service, the instability had gone. (BTW, the transmitted signal was also
rotten) .Thanks Rich!!

Listen for this old road warrior (the rig, not me) K2/100/M as it traverses
the RARE counties of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the MiQP test April 16.
I'll be QRV mostly on CW with some forays into the SSB portions of 20, 40,
and 75M. See http://www.miqp.org/ for the particulars.

[Elecraft] Info 201 again

2005-03-25 Thread Tony Morgan

Hi Guys,
K2 #4049 w/KPA100 + KAT100. Working without any problems for almost a year.
Was running MMTTY @ 25 wts today. After returning to receive K2 locked
up, no audio not able to do anything. Turned it off and back on and all
was normal except could not access menu. Turned it off again and left it
for a couple of hours, turned back on and am getting info 201 then
ELECRAFT then 7100 plus some hum from speaker.

Where to check first when I open it up?
Thanks guys.
