We have had several people report that 2SC1969s obtained in EU did not work
well. I don't know why. We use only Mitsubishi brand 2SC1969 transistors,
obtained from RF Parts.
. snip ..

Well Gary I did not have any idea about this 2SC1969 european problem. It's
curious because the one I triyed to use where also Mitsubishi brand but they
where really not working. The drive was the same but the output was max 1.5
w on 80 m and less and less going up in frequency - So I endes up with 6
2sc1969 dead and not output till I received the package from Wayne place !!!

Thank again Gary for your help.

[Elecraft] get what you ask for: power-out resolution

2005-04-27 Thread Lloyd Lachow
   Gary pointed me to:

  http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Power_Control_Mod.html

and also said, ...there is an optimum value of R98
for any specific K2 that will allow the best power
control resolution. Basically, it allows the 8 bit DAC
(U8 on the control board) to use more of its maximum
possible 256 bits of control.

This is cool! Tweakage for my specific rig...The
closest I had was a 5K pot, and I fiddled with it a
bit, but couldn't get a truly satisfactory result with
10W on 10M, because, I think, my dummy load is only
for 5W. I finally went to 40M, and tested to see the
highest value that would give me near what I requested
as power-out, but since the suggested value of the pot
was 1K, I didn't exceed that.

  I wound up replacing the 270 ohm R98 with a 1K, and
now I'm well-pleased; getting just a few tenths of a
watt over the requested power level on all bands.

I am awaiting delivery of the above in preparation for building the

[Elecraft] Favorite K2 Remote Program?

2005-04-27 Thread vze3v8dt
Now that I have the KIO2 installed I'm anxious to test it out. I see quite a
long list of programs that provide support for the K2. Just wondering what is
your favorite such program and why? I don't (at least initially plan to) do
remote control over the network, but that would be slick someday (would I get
any work done then?). I mostly would be interested in controlling various
features of the radio, some of which may be easier via computer control than
from the front panel, ability to grab the frequency mode for logging, and set
up scanning parameters (upper/lower frequency limits or scanning memories).

I also plan to use computer interface to a Rigblaster for PSK31. Was planning
on running the latest version of DigiPan, but I see that Ham Radio Deluxe has
it built in as well. I've heard great things about HRD. Do folk here concur?

Thanks for your input!

[Elecraft] RigBlaster/K2 PSK31/PropNet^31

2005-04-27 Thread vze3v8dt
I just sent out a note to the list and commented that I planned to use
RigBlaster with the K2. I have Heil microphones so have already changed R14 to
increase the gain and that seems to work well.

Two issues. First, I noticed RF on 160m to 40m when using the microphones into
the Rigblaster. I performed the ground modification of the 8 pin microphone
connector and that solved the problem on all bands when the microphones are
plugged directly into the K2 front panel, however if I have them plugged into
the RigBlaster and then use the 8 pin modular connector (RJ-45?) cable to the 8
pin mic connector on the K2 I still have RF issues on 160 80m (at least one
try on 40m it was okay). I did a similar mod to the 8 pin mic connector on the
front panel of the RigBlaster but it didn't help at all. I'm thinking that the
cable from the RigBlaster to K2 may not be well shielded, or at least not well
grounded at the back panel of the RigBlaster. Anyone else have this experience
as well? I was thinking of using a braided shield removed carefully from some
RG-8 to slide over the top of that cable and connect to the metal microphone
outer shell and if necessary to a ground lug on the back of the RigBlaster.

Second issue. With the mod on the SSB board of R14 from 1k to 10k for
increased gain for my Heil microphones I'm concerned about overdriving the
input from the soundboard output. Maybe I should put in a voltage divider
dedicated in the cable assembly from the audio out of the sound board to the
RigBlaster. Any thoughts or experience out there with that?

I was thining of setting up PropNET^31 to use the K2 for a smart beacon
during potential E-skip openings on 10m. Since I'm away from home more than I
can be home to operate, it would put the K2 to work for some benefit to all
even while I'm at work. I know that PropNet is fairly new, but anyone else out
there doing this with their K2 yet?

Thanks!

YES! See my review on eham. In the year since I wrote it, it's only

From first hand experience, I'll tell you that Bird technical support is
highly competent, and easy to deal with.

Trying to recalibrate a Bird is a professional and not an amateur task.
Also, It does not come cheap. You'll probably pay more for the
recalibration than you did for the original meter on the used market.
However, since you do not currently believe the readings that you're
getting, the meter is not doing you much good in its present condition.

One other comment: It is extremely inadvisable to buy a used Bird slug,
unless you know the detailed history of it (often not the case). Quite
often, used Bird slugs have been abused (accidentally running a KW through
a 50W slug, et cetera), and are damaged. You can by brand new slugs from
Henry for about $90 each. Perhaps other list members could point you to
better deals.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in either Bird or Henry. I'm
merely a very happy customer.

Most ham gear, including the K2, has what is known in the pro
audio world as a pin 1 problem at its mic and control inputs. I
don't know about the Rigblaster, but I would be surprised if it
doesn't also have the problem.

The RIGHT place to connect the shield of any cable is the chassis,
not the circuit board (often called mic ground or control
ground). See my website for applications notes about this.

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/publish.htm

Also see AES48, an international standard that addresses this
issue, and includes a tutorial annex (that I helped write).

http://www.aes.org/publications/standards/courtesy.cfm?ID=44

I have fixed the pin 1 problems by doing three things. First, I
have added a short jumper between the mic jack and the chassis,
and extended it to the shell of the headphone jack. Second, I make
all of my shield connections to the shell of the mic connector.

Third, I've replaced the stock RS232 cable with shielded CAT5.
That shield, AND the returns of all the control lines, go to the
shell of the DB9 connectors at both ends (the computer end and the
K2 end), and NOT to pin 5. Before I made this change, my computer
would lock up at 10 watts. Now I can use the K2 drive my Titan at
1 kW with no problem.

True, but the K60XV is a *very* nice interface that makes using the K2 with

Re: [Elecraft] Favorite K2 Remote Program?

2005-04-27 Thread Chris

DxLabs is good and Free!

DxKeeper is the logging module, comprehensive, good QSL management.

Commander is the remote control part of the suite. It is basic but works
well and you can set up the macros do do quite a bit. See the K2
Programmers Reference, on the Elecraft site, for the necessary commands.

It also has a PSK module WinWarbler

MixW and Digipan both work for PSK31 with the K2

The HRD PSK31 superbrowser is pretty impressive to watch. I think that
HRD falls down in the logging department.

There are bridging module to use MixW, HRD data in the DxLabs DxKeeper
logbook.

[Elecraft] QSO with KI4DGH

2005-04-27 Thread Joe Ford

Fellow Elecrafters:

Last night I was doing some of the never ending administrative tasks
around the shack here and my K2 was sitting on 7045 khz when Chuck,
KI4DGH came on calling CQ. I recognized his call from one I had seen
here on the reflector. We had a nice K2 to K2 QSO, cut short when my
dog, Heidi began scratching on my leg asking to go outside.

The reason I bring this up, Chuck has only been a ham for about 14
months. In that short period he has built both a KX1 and a K2 and he has
learned the code pretty well. A lot of us old timers think we are the
only ones doing CW. Guys like Chuck are proving us wrong.

Well I know I'm not the only one who has met people new to ham radio
with an interest in CW, QRP and building good radios. But I was
impressed with Chuck's accomplishments and thought them worthy of note.

Also, Elecraft deserves a lot credit for their great kits which attract
new and old alike.

Okay, that's enough of that!

Re: [Elecraft] QSO with KI4DGH

2005-04-27 Thread Darrell Bellerive
Joe et al,

There are a bunch of new hams, and some longer in the hobby, all learning CW
and working on increasing their speed over at the QRS-CW Yahoo Group. See
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QRS-CW/ for details.

Along with various CW discussions, the group is used to make skeds for
practicing CW. If anyone wants to help out some budding CW ops, and are
willing to QRS, check out the group and offer to schedule some contacts.

Stuart is on the right track, RF on the coax, but looking at the wrong

Heck, you don't even need the heat shrink. A wire tie or two on each
end keeps them secure to the coax so they don't slide.

I currently have 10 of these beads choking the coax to my A3S. I used
10 beads because I intend to add the A743 40m kit eventually and needed
the extra impedance on 40m.

[Elecraft] K2 operating humor

2005-04-27 Thread Roger Stein
My Elecraft experience to date has been very enjoyable as I imagine yours
has. I am pretty well built out with the K2 family of products and am still
learning to take advantage of the many features. Like all activities,
finding the proper balance with family, work, hobbies, etc. continues to
change.

Here is my recent K2 humorous operating moment.I like to dial in a QSO
when I am doing an activity in the shop, sometimes
CW, sometimes SSBanyway I was in the USB mode, but down in the CW
portion of the band for just a broad bandwidth listen,
and came across some real nice CW sending to listen to. Even though I have
one of the visual LED tuning accessories built-in to my K2, I am in the
habit of turning on the 'spot' tone to zero-beat as well. Well, I could just
barely hear the spot tone coming from the speaker.

This was odd as usually the spot tone is about the same level as my normal
audio listening level. I had recently searched the archives for info on an
accessory speaker and had come across the review of a Radio Shack speaker
that a lot of the fellows liked that was on a close out.

Our local store was able to find one for me in their network of stores, (
half-price!!) I had just hooked it up the day before. I was getting tunnel
vision on 'what is wrong with my new speaker'...

Then it dawned on me..I was on USB listening to CW with the DSP on
and the autonotch engaged!!! No wonder I couldn't hear the spot tone!!!

It was working as designed, the operator was at fault!!!

Hmmm, maybe a K2 operating manual for dummies could be a best seller!!!

Those who can learn to laugh at themselves can be entertained for hours!!

[Elecraft] Powerpoint and photos

2005-04-27 Thread Nigel
Am looking to make a presentation to our New Zealand annual conference to
encourage people into the joys of building your own gear.
I have the Powerpoint from the Elecraft website but it needs a little
updating as it only shows K1 and K2 info.
Has anyone done an update which shows the full range of Elecraft products
and/or has photos of the other products I could incorporate. Some photos
of the insides would be good too.

Thanks
