RE: [Elecraft] Low receiver sensitivity

2005-05-12 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
My guess is that somewhere in writing that example the numbers changed
(likely because the author wanted the result to be 30 dB instead of dealing
with 29.6 dB and explaining away the fact that the tenths digit is
insignificant so should be rounded up). 1.48 *is* the log of 30, so
apparently the quantities on the right of the equal sign were changed to
reflect the log of 33, but the quantities on the left were unchanged. End
result -- 'unequal equal signs' G.

I did, and found this procedure and example:

 A. Divide S+N by N; call the resulting ratio R.
 B. Take the base-10 logarithm of R (log key on most calculators). C.
Multiply the result by 20 to obtain the S+N/N ratio at 1 microvolt, in
dB. D. If the S+N/N is greater than 10 dB, then the MDS is
approximately equal to the result from (C) subtracted from -107 dBm.

Example: DMM readings of 1.0 Vrms (XG1 on), and 0.030 Vrms (XG1 off).

 A. R = 1.0/.03 = 33
 B. log(30) = 1.52
 C. 20 x 1.48 = about 30 dB (this meets the requirement for step D) D.
 MDS = -107 dBm - 30 dB = -137 dBm

 Two remarks:
 1. I think the second step in the example should read: B.
 log(10) = 1.52.
 2. I may be missing something here, but if the outcome of B) equals 1.52,
why is 1.48 used in C)? (Not that it changes much, only 0.8 dB,
 but hey:

Sorry for the delay responding Bart! I've been away all day and I see that

Yes, you are right. B. should read log(33) = 1.52 (the base 10 is
understood unless a different base is shown and, if so, the
 base is shown
as a subscript following log, not in parenthesis). The procedure
 is to take
the result of A. and find the logarithm of that.

I'm really confused about where the 1.48 came from!! That should
 be 1.52 so
 20 x 1.52 = 30 dB.

That instruction sheet was not one if my projects, so I never
 looked at that
example closely. I'll pass this info along to Wayne.

[Elecraft] J-37/J-38

2005-05-12 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
The J-37 I have is a KY-116G...Very plain, austere key...IMHO it is obvious
that the 2 J-38's are of far superior construction, especially the pivot
bearings...The J-38's also have a shorting switch, the J-37 does not, although
I would never use that feature anyway...

I have a straight key labeled CEL Z. A. 16929 on the bottom of the bakelite
base, and KEY W. T. 8 AMP No. 2 MK III on the top...Anyone know anything
about this key?...It was a gift and I was told it was Australian...

I only use these keys on SKN...I use the J-37 the most, but only because I have
it mounted on a more stable home-made base...

Jerry, wa2dkg

Jerry wrote:

The J-37 I bought (surplus) came in it's original cardboard box and

A J-37 on the leg clip becomes a J-45 under the old Army Signal Corps naming
system, or a KY-116/U under the late-WWII to present Joint Army Navy naming
system. They can be often found for less than $25 new, and are a great value,
IMHO.

Neither of my J-38's, mounted on black bakelite plates, bears a manufacture's
name.

The J-38 was never intended for use in anything except Morse code classroom
training sessions. It is not associated with any radio set in military service.
It is probably the least durable and most cheaply made of military straight
keys. Tons of them were surplused in the decades since WWII.

My favorite straight key isn't any of the many military keys I have. It is the
commercial Nye Viking Model 330-001 Master Key, which comes with a nicely
weighted base, and with enclosed keying contacts in the base that keep all
voltages off the exposed key parts. Unfortunately, I believe it is discontinued
and unavailable except as old stock, and then is pretty pricey when one is

[Elecraft] A to B conversion

2005-05-12 Thread Tom Hoedjes
Hi there,

Long time being on this list due to K2 number 716

Now I updated the rig to a Rev B and have the following problems.

Output without AT all OK
When I put the AT between then no relays are heard and the display
shows LO P

In the menu all settings L0 through C0 the relays are clicking.

Further a VFO linearisation is not possible
The counter starts some where at 10839 and then after a few seconds it
puts the info 232 on.

Can some body help me out with this ??

Tnx in advance

Re: [Elecraft] Low receiver sensitivity, XG1 example

2005-05-12 Thread Bob - W5BIG
Line B. of the example should read : log(33)=1.52

Apparently there was a typo in line B that propagated into line C. The log
of 30 is 1.48, that's where the value of 1.48 in line C came from.

Example should read:
A. R=1.0/0.03 = 33
B. log(33)=1.52
C. 20*1.52=30dB
D. MDS= -107dBm - 30dB = -137dBm

Let's see where the value -107dBm came from:

1 dBm means 1 milliwatt of power. In this case the load resistance is
assumed to be 50 ohms, so 1 mW will produce a voltage across the 50 ohm
load that is = SquareRoot( 0.001*50) = 0.224 volt rms.

The XG1 output is 1 microvolt into a 50 ohm load for this test, so the ratio
of it's output to the 1dBm reference signal is:
1 microvolt/0.224volt = 0.04464.
The log(0.04464) = -5.35
Multiplying by 20 to convert this voltage ratio to dB, we get 20*(-5.35)
= -107dB

The level of the XG1 test signal is -107dBm, that is, 107dB weaker than one
milliwatt. Since this produces an output from the receiver that is well
above the noise level, then the minimum detectable signal would be even
weaker than -107dBm. Typically for the K2 it could be around 30dB weaker (as
we found in step C above), so the minimum detectable signal is
approximately -137dBm.

 Buzznot noise blanker

All 9 band modules 160/80/40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters

It also has the ABX xtal bandwidth filter control on the front panel.
I have all the manuals for it.

I just bought this to use when I go motorcycle mobile, but would found

Of course the results could be skewed since it is not a completely
random survey as well. That is, you are tallying results from only
those who responded. Maybe those folk who are left handed felt more
compelled to respond than those who are right handed. Interesting,
nonetheless, as to your results and I'll be anxious to see the final

Here's the Guinness sentence required for record attempts:

No abbreviations or predictive words can be used. They have to send it

Subject: [Elecraft] QST: CW vs Text Message Contest on NBC's Tonight
ShowFriday

Posting this because of the CW component.

Hi All,

Christie K0IU at HRO Burbank just informed me that Chip K7JA (Yaesu)
and a traffic handler friend will be competing on NBC's Tonight Show
with Jay Leno against a pair of cellphone text messengers to see who
can transmit a message the fastest. According to Christie the
competition will be airing tomorrow night (Friday May 13th).
This was confirmed by Chip's wife Janet KL7MF who was manning the
other cash register at HRO this afternoon.

 Get your TiVOs programmed!!

 73 de Mike, W4EF...

I know Chip. Why do I think the 'CW' will easily beat the cell phone message
system...
Lets watch...73, Art W6KY

[Elecraft] Tuner efficiency question

2005-05-12 Thread Parker Buckley
I've been using my QRP K2 for the last 2-3 years with a full sized Palstar
tuner. I use a variety of antennas from 160 to 10 meters, fed with coax,
ladder line, choke baluns, the Elecraft balun, etc. I'm thinking about
going to an auto tuner (Dayton Hamvention coming). Has anyone compared the
efficiencies of the very small tuner like the T1, the KAT2, and larger
tuners like the Palstar? (I've been the Johnson KW Matchbox route as well.)
Intuition tells me there is something lost when going to very small
components packed into a tiny space compared to large air variables, big
roller inductors, etc., but I don't have anything to back up that gut feel.
Anyone make any measurements?

[Elecraft] for interested Dayton attendees

2005-05-12 Thread Larry Phipps

I will be demo'ing my E-Meter digital wide dynamic range power/SWR meter
at the SteppIR booth at Dayton this year. The E-Meter will be of
interest to Elecrafters bcause it provides accurate power readings from
10mw to 2500W, and accurate SWR readings from 50mw to 2500W. The demo
will include my K2 as the power source, and a Bird 4410A wattmeter for
comparison.

The E-Meter will be available in kit or assembled form, and has also
been accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of QEX for you
homebrewers. The prototype unit can be seen on my website with details,
www.telepostinc.com/n8lp.html. The final version will be offered in an
all metal case closely resembling the EC1 case used for the K1.

It is autoranging, and has very good accuracy. The meter has a built-in
frequency counter which allows precise in-the-field calibration at up to
154 frequency/power combinations, with extrapolation between cal points.
I plan to offer a calibrator mini-kit as well. Assembled units will be
delivered calibrated on all bands from 160-6m, and at 10W, 100W and 1000W.

The E-Meter has a serial port for remote or PC control, and comes with a
freeware virtual control panel for Windows.

For more info, contact me off list.

Larry N8LP

Check your sidetone source, Ed. MENU, STL press/hold MENU to enter sidetone
level set mode, the tap DISPLAY to toggle between U6-25 and U8-4. You will
probably find the tone at U8-4.

The new firmware has a new submenu that allows you to select whether
sidetone comes from U6-25 or U8-1. With the mods required with the new
firmware, you don't have a choice. You MUST select sidetone from U8 or it
won't work.

RE: [Elecraft] Which hand do you use?

2005-05-12 Thread Craig Rairdin
Thanks to all who have responded to the Handedness survey (49) so
 far.

Out of 49 respondents, and a world average of 10% left-handers (that
would be 4.9%), it seems my friend might have been right. Either
the fraction of hams who are sort of to really left-handed is
larger than 10%, or possibly it's because we're mainly male?

The number of lefties in the general population may be closer to 13%.

In addition to problems with your sample (your respondents choose
themselves, which isn't the greatest sampling method) the other problem is
that your sample size is too small to draw conclusions from. If you get 100
responses you can be 90% sure that the actual percentage of lefties is +/-
5.53%. So if you see 10 out of 100 (assuming your sample is truly random,
which it's not) then you can be 90% sure that the actual value is between
about 4% and 16%. That's quite a spread.

If you want even more confidence -- say 99% -- you're in bigger trouble.
You'll need a sample size of 7562 to be accurate to +/- 1%. With your
current sample size of 49, if you get a result of 13 lefties you can be 99%
certain that the actual percentage of left-handed hams is between 1% and
25%!

Re: [Elecraft] Tuner efficiency question

2005-05-12 Thread Don

Parker et al,

QST did a review and test of a bunch of balanced tuners a year or so back.
I don't remember too much of it now but remember being shocked at how high
the losses typically were. As I recall efficiency ran in the 65 to 75
percent range for many of them. The Johnson matchbox was the most efficient
by far (90% or more??) but did not cover all bands.

I have not really studied this issue but have always been interested. My
gut feel is that often much of the loss in these tuners (when driving a
balanced line) is in the internal balun which is at the output of typical
tuners and is driving a balanced line to the antenna which often has a
horrendous SWR. The high SWR on the balanced line is not itself a problem
because balanced twin line or ladder line feeders can easily handle the high
currents and voltages with low losses but the poor balun can quickly get too
hot to touch because of the high circulating currents within the balun.

Re: [Elecraft] Tuner efficiency question

2005-05-12 Thread John, KI6WX

Parker  Don;
I haven't tried to measure the efficiency of the Elecraft tuners. It is a
fairly difficult measurement to make correctly when the input and output
impedance are significantly different. However, there are two effects to
consider in tuner efficiency.

At high power, an inefficient tuner can generate significant amounts of
heat, which can destroy components. A 1kW transmitter into a 70% efficient
tuner will generate 300 watts of heat in the tuner.

The second effect is the loss of signal at the receive station. A 90%
efficient tuner will lose 0.5 dB; a 70% efficient tuner will lose 1.5 dB.
The 1 dB difference will not have any noticeable effect on the ability to
receive CW. Even on digital modes, it will only have a minor effect on the
received error rate. Other factors, such as QSB, QRM, or QRN, will have a
bigger effect.

As long as the Elecraft tuners are reasonably efficient, they shouldn't have
any significant effect on your ability to communicate.

Re: [Elecraft] Tuner efficiency question

2005-05-12 Thread vze3v8dt
I haven't had lots of different tuners to compare myself, but I do have
a Johnson KW Matchbox tuner. It does a great job on Balanced lines. I
didn't really know about the Palastar but just checked it out on the
website. Looked like an interesting tuner. But to me the downside of
it was that there is a balun on the output, which of course as Don
stated is a dominating factor in losses in a tuner (at least maybe that
is what I took away from his comments as well as other discussions on
this subject in the past). Is there a modern tuner out there for
balanced lines that doesn't use a balun?

Maybe the proper comparison for more apples to apples comparison should
be made for tuners that are designed for type of feedline output or
maybe Hi-Z vs Lo-Z, as most today, including the Elecraft, are likely
moreso designed not for balanced line output and Hi-Z but coaxial output
and Lo-Z. Sure, many tuners may also have a balanced line output
option, but that is likely there as a convenience or for marketing or
whatever but is really just added on as compared to the overall tuner
being designed for Hi-Z and balanced output. While I like my Johnson KW
tuner for certain antennas I may opt for some other tuner for other
types of antennas. The type of tuner should be considered as a whole in
the antenna system, not as a one size fits all solution (unless there is
a tuner out there that really can do both ends of the spectrum equally
well).

When I first started getting back into QRP just over one year ago I had
my RockMite-40 sitting on top of the Johnson KW Matchbox. It was going
to a resonant antenna and didn't go through the tuner. Even though the
Matchbox is supposedly a low loss antenna tuner it did seem like there
was something just wrong about using it with a QRP rig, maybe like some
sort of sacralidge in its own way, but maybe that is just me.

Maybe the purist would say that only resonant antennas should be used so
a tuner is not needed. Okay, that makes some sense, but maybe I can get
an antenna with better overall performance than the extra losses
involved when using a tuner. Again, the whole systems needs to be
evaluated an not just individual parts of a system. If individual parts
are selected because they are the best but when put together they don't
work so well collectively it doesn't seem like a good solution. Maybe a
tuner with more versatility even if it has slightly higher losses is a
better solution for the next ham who doesn't use just one antenna at a
fixed location all the time. Certainly as QRPers we are all aware that
antenna systems are quite important and band conditions really dominate
how well we can communicate. But really, given good band conditions and
being able to somehow get some signal to something to radiate things
will result in being able to communicate.

I just installed the KAT2 in my K2 and am amazed at how fast it tunes.
I haven't tried it with a variety of different antenna configurations,
so I can't comment much on its verstatility. Unfortunately I'm not
currently using my balanced feedline antenna anymore due to a change in
QTH and a temporary hamshack setup, but the KAT2 seems to suit my needs
for now. If anything, at this time the Matchbox at least still looks
quite respectable sitting on the bench (farther away from the K2 than
when I had the RockMite sitting on top of the Matchbox, HI! HI!).

I hope my late night ramblings make some sense. Sorry if they don't.
