[Elecraft] K2 Almost Ready

2005-05-15 Thread richard.arland
Gang:

Had my first surgery on April 21, been lugging a cast around on my right foot
ever since. Still have at least 3-4 weeks more with no weight bearing.

Therefore, I decided to put my off-work time to good use, bought a K2 with
all the options except the battery and the 100W amp, and have been having a
ball building and building and building.

We are at a work stopage due to a missing 2N5109 (Q5 pre-driver) transistor. It
is Saturday night, of course, so it won't be here before Monday or Tuesday
(thanks, Scott). AndI am chomping at the bit to get this thing all
together, tested and on the air!

The 2N5109 subs out to an NTE 278, but I don't have one of those either. Anyone
have a good non-NTE sub for this transistor that I just might have in my stock
so I could get on with the testing of this rig. I'm already suffering from
cabin fever and this isn't helping one bit!!!

Two things I am looking forward to: getting the K2 on the air and a shower!
Can't shower with the cast on! I'm gettin' gammie, Cletus!

One other idea: has anyone tried marrying a Communications Concepts transistor
linear up with a K2? They make several versions up to and incuding a 180W
linear amp. These are PC boards and partial parts kits, not actual kit linears,
so they fall within the FCC guidelines for ham linears that cover 10-11 meters.

-Original Message-

I have a Nokia 6360 that alerts me to incoming messages with a nice, slow CW
'SMS'. This was the default when I got the phone several years ago. It is
definitely a feature!

---

There is another SMS alert in there as well: 'Connecting people', at least
it has been there in all the Nokia phones that I have had.

I believe there is a correlation between the relatively large and active
Finiish ham population and Nokia, but maybe some Finnish hams on this list
could comment on this?

Many thanks to the guys who made this available for download.
I watched it several times yesterday and really enjoyed it.
Those CW guys were great and pleased to say I could actually copy the code
between the local QRM, real cool Ops, but I could never have done that live
under those conditions.

Nice to see the Bencher and the time taken to adjust it's position on the

Great stuff...

[Elecraft] K2 4686

2005-05-15 Thread Ken Kirkley
Well.it is hard to believe but K2 #4686 is alive and well! For some
two to three years I had dreamed of building a K2, but for lack of funds
and fear of failure I kept putting it off. Finally, the itch got to be
to much for me. So, back in February I called Lisa and placed my order.
Except
for a couple of small miscues on my part the build went without a hitch!
I made my maiden SSB contacts yesterday and am setting up a sked
for my maiden CW contact. Is it OK if I stick out my chest and get a
little puffed up with pride?! grin Thanks Elecraft for making quality kits

[Elecraft] Rosin

2005-05-15 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
Rosin is extracted from pine sap and has a characteristic pine odor...It is
organic, but is not water soluble, as anyone who has gotten pin sap on their
hands can testify to...Hot water and soap will not easily remove it from your
hands, a solvent is needed...I have never seen solder with water soluble flux
referred to as having water-soluble ROSIN, only a water soluble flux core...
The purpose of any flux is to chemically clean the joint of oxides and
impurities...With some fluxes the chemical reaction will continue if it is not
cleaned off, spurred on by atmospheric humidity...

It is very risky using acetone to clean up PCB's since acetone dissolves many
plastics and can ruin relays, connector headers, jacks, and some
capacitors...Acetone is often used as a cement because it softens some plastics
allowing welding of the parts...

If one MUST remove rosin flux, the safest solvent is isopropyl alcohol...It
best to clean as you go and not wait until the board is finished and then try
to clean the whole thing at once...Using an acid brush, it cleans off easier
while the joint is still warm...99% isopropyl is best, but you can use the drug
store stuff if you take the time to wipe/dab the joint dry with a soft cotton
cloth, which I always do anyway...Letting it air dry will leave a residue...

Actually my cell phone (or as the europeans say mobile) has a tag

spelling Finland.

I think the company name was taken from a protest sign opposing a brand

[Elecraft] 12m alignment failure, C44 /or C46 dirty wipers?

2005-05-15 Thread Paul
Everything was going fantastic with the final alignment until 12m then
nothing. Only 0.2 indicated no matter how I adjust C44 or C46. Quick search
of the archives and a look at the schematics points to soldering, C44, C45,
C46, soldering, K6, VCO or soldering as potential causes. Pulled off the
bottom plate, got out the magnifying headgear and scrutinized every joint.
Beautiful joints, nice smooth fillets on both sides, even got out the
alcohol and cleaned 'em up a bit more. Checked TP1 at 24890 and got 19975.75
so the VCO is fine. Set to 24900, hit TUNE, still 0.2, tweak C44 a bit then
BAM 4.6, a few more iterations between C46, C44 and she's peaked at 2.1 as
requested by the power setting. So hu, could the wiper on C44 have been
dirty or something? I know I twisted both the full range when it first
failed. Interesting but happy ending. Hope this tid-bit may prove useful to
someone else.

Re: [Elecraft] Organic Rosin Core Solder

2005-05-15 Thread Paul
envoromentally friendly solvent you obvoiusly haven't seen the facts at
http://www.dhmo.org/

:- )

I ask this in all seriousness; and with no disrespect. But am I
missing something here? Why would folks use this stuff if it's such a
 pain in the butt?

I believe that it's normally used with automated soldering equipment,
and the boards are washed in a hot water bath after soldering. I
presume (I'm sure Lyle or someone knows for sure) that the advantage is
that the flux can be removed without using environmentally dangerous
 solvents.

That's correct. Water is an environmentally friendly solvent (at least
for now :-)

It does an excellent job of cleaning the surfaces to be soldered.

It cleans well (as long as you do it quickly!), so joints can be
inspected. It is (or was) not considered hazardous. It acts like soap -
you get suds as you wash/scrub the board.

It is not recommended for kit building because of the dangers of
corrosion. In automated work, the boards are exposed to the flux, then a
wave of molten solder, over a period of some few to tens of seconds. It
is then rinsed thoroughly.

The organic cored solder was probably intended mostly for touch-up and
rework.

[Elecraft] More Clarifications on the Tonight Show - from K6CTW

2005-05-15 Thread Ken Miller, K6CTW
*A few more points for clarification: When my XYL, Connie, originally
answered the call, at my home, from the producers of the show, she
explained that I operated both codes and that I considered myself to be
a good but not exceptional operator. However, she is the one who sold
the producers that the skit could work. She also did a VERY credible job
of explaining Morse telegraphy and the radio code and its uses. (You all
might think to send her a thanks too as without her, this would never
have happened [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) When they contacted me later
that afternoon, I explained that my wife was correct, I am a competent
CW and Morse operator. Your point is interesting in that they did try
and get the fastest text messengers they could fly in. I did however
explain that if the Tonight Show folks had been able to get the
equivalent world record holder in CW to do this, it would have been at
almost TRIPLE the speed we were going at. The reason, as I have
explained before, that we worked at about 28 or so wpm is that this is
the fastest speed that I can make nice readable copy with a pencil as
they did not have the ability to let me use a typewriter for copy (and I
thought they were going to do a camera shot of my copy for
verification). Also, since we did not have the time to set up
headphones, I just added some extra volume for me, had the stage folks
cut my mike (to prevent feedback and overload) and copied off of the
speaker. To re-emphasize the point, I'm just an average CW op who
occasionally operates the CW SS QRP, whith my K2 of course, and really
enjoys CW, and traffic handling. By the way, the radios used were Chip's
not from Yaesu and the backup radios were from HRO. 73, Ken, K6CTW *

[Elecraft] K2 Filter attenuation?

2005-05-15 Thread Ken Lotts

I have spent hours tweaking the CW filters on my K2 and am not sure that
they are all that good yet. (I am in no hurry to complete this radio, my
actual goal is to build a K2 that is comparable to the best). I built a K2
five years ago and do not recall filter attenuation like what I am
experiencing on this new one..

To give you an idea what I am seeing I have posted a spectrogram screen shot
with all three filters superimposed on each other. Does it look typical to
you?

CHART setup
=
Center freq is 570 hz (My favorite spot for CW)
AGC is OFF.
Noise source is a Palomar R-X Noise bridge.
Audio is measured from the headphone jack.
L34 is peaked

Chart can be viewed at http://www.vtc.net/~ken/filters.jpg

Here is what I have done so far.

1: I have CAREFULLY inspected T7 ensuring that:

a: It has 20 turns red and 5 turns green

b: Pin 3 is sourced from inner red wire Pin 1 is sourced
from inner green wire (exactly as per diagram 6-18 in
   manual)

c: Each of its solder joints are shiny and good. I reheated
them (twice). There is no apparent PTTL

2: Inspected X7 - X11 =

a: Each are labeled 4.9136 - S (verified)

b: Each have good shiny solder joints

c: Each have two excellent ground connections (on each side).

3: Carefully peaked L34 with AGC off (it peaked exactly one turn down from
the top)

| All,
|
| Well to answer some of the questions I have received:
|
| 1. Ben was just getting ready to start entering the last 2 words when I
| was done.
| 2. None of us had any idea of the text we would be sending, not only for
| the show but also for the 3 rehersals (in which we smoked em every time)
| 3. Chip, K7JA was sending and I, Ken, K6CTW was receiving.
| 4. The radios were FT-817's provided by Chip's company Yaesu and HRO.
| Reason for that choice was that we needed the most frequency agile
| radios we could get. When I talked to the technical folks, they
| recommended we START at 2 meters and go up because of all of the lower
| frequency noise and RFI from the other TV equipment. When I got there,
| we took out a spectrum analyzer and studied all of the interference
| possibilities. I ended up choosing 432.200 MHz because that guaranteed
| no RFI from their equipment and we were high enough not to overload
| their front ends either. This was then verified and it was what we were
| using at the FT-817's lowest setting.
| 5. I already knew that 28-30 wpm would easily keep us in front of even
| the current world record holder, and also it is the fastest speed that I
| can make nice readable copy on paper with a stick.
| 6. The telegrapher costumes were the producer's idea but it was fun
| for both Chip and I.
| 7. In rehersal I, K6CTW had a number of lines which would have really
| done a nice job of plugging ham radio and telegraphy however at our last
| dress rehersal, they decided to cut them out to make the segment fit.
| (maybe next time).
| 8. I decided that I would be the receiver because I'm not bothered by
| crowd noise etc.
|
| If you enjoyed the segment, PLEASE email, write, etc. to let The
| Tonight Show know about it. That way we may have a chance for a bigger
| segment next time.
|
| Thanks for the kind comments from all and let's keep on having fun! (It
| is a hobby after all).

[Elecraft] Photo correction suggestion.

2005-05-15 Thread Yves Dussault

I am now building the K2 (Nr 4875) and KSB2 ssb module.
I notice that the pictures shown on the Elecraft web site are not up to date
and according to the instructions.
For example, they show R11 mounted on the component side and the
instructions say to mount it on the other side.
The construction pictures taken by PA3CEV are of an older version of the K2.
I strongly suggest that Elecraft put up to date pictures on the web site.
That surely would help builders of the otherwise fine products!

Andrew,

I beg to differ that the LDG: 4:1 balun and the Elecraft 4:1 balun are
similar, or even close. The LDG 4:1 balun is a voltage balun. I don't
have one, but I have its schematic. The Elecraft 4:1 balun is a current
balun, plus the fact that it is wound on a binocular core. The core
materials are different. If fact, the only similarity is that both are
4:1 baluns. The major difference between a current balun and a voltage
balun is the frequency coverage.

[Elecraft] kx1 and single-lever paddles?

2005-05-15 Thread Andrea Borgia
Hello.

Right now I am happily using a straight key with my KX1 as I can't seem
to get the hang of paddles (that and the fact that pounding brass feels
good ;-)

Since I found a single-lever paddle that may be used as a cootie-key
of sorts (see here: http://www.mtechnologies.com/cootie.htm), I was
wondering if I could catch two birds with the proverbial one stone:

-with the KX1 in straight key mode, paddle used as cootie-key
(jumpering the two posts together)

-with the KX1 in paddle mode, paddle used normally, for example to enter
data in keyer memory or maybe one day for real 8-)

Question is, does the KX1 internal keyer really care about the paddle
being a normal dual-lever model or a single non-iambic one?
(backup question: was the question above really dumb? ;-)

TIA,
Andrea.

It looks fine, although I would move the two wider filters a bit to the right.
There looks like about 6-8 db difference in attenuation between the widest and
narrowest filters, which is probably on the high side of normal (although this
tends to vary). I see about 4 db on mine, which is #709 but has had the
crystals replaced and T7 rewound to current spec.

I would be interested in knowing how much difference in attenuation others are
seeing. I know that K1JD has an ANCIENT K2 (field test vintage) which has zero
db difference!

RE: [Elecraft] kx1 and single-lever paddles?

2005-05-15 Thread EricJ
The KX1 would never know that you connected a single-lever paddle vs. a
dual-lever paddle. Dual-lever paddles are not necessarily normal. They are
just more common.

BTW, you suggested you were having a little trouble with iambic keying.
Don't feel bad. I did a little informal survey at the last club meeting
among the known cw ops there. Out of an even dozen of us, all used a
dual-paddle paddle. Only two used either iambic mode. One of those using
iambic was relatively new to ham radio, the other had been a cw op for 30
years. The rest of us had been cw ops for 20-48 (me) years. Frankly, iambic
keying seems to take an awful lot of effort to learn just to send 4 letters
with less energy.

If you're having problems with it, don't worry about it. Concentrate on
well-formed Morse with whatever you are comfortable with. The important
thing is to get on the air and built experience.

remember well 2001...

Now for the big question. What is the number of the booths were Elecraft
will be?

[Elecraft] 12m alignment failure, C44 /or C46 dirty wipers? Oops

2005-05-15 Thread Paul
Oops, after I sent this I realized variable caps don't have wipers like a
pot does. Oh well, still wondering why it suddenly started to function.

Subject:12m alignment failure, C44 /or C46 dirty wipers?

[Elecraft] K2 current draw

2005-05-15 Thread Vic Rosenthal
I just noticed an interesting thing about my K2/100: the current drawn by the
low-power part of the K2 (that's the current measured when you tap DISPLAY) is
extra high on one band: 20 meters. When I'm running 100 watts out, the current
displayed varies from about 2.2-2.8 amps on all bands other than 20. On 20,
it's 3.5 amps.

My first thought was that the bandpass filter was misaligned on 20. Sure
enough, after adjusting L7 and L8 on 30 meters, the 20-meter trimmers were at
minimum capacity when the output peaked. I had to add an 8 pf capacitor across
one of them and a 27 pf capacitor (!) across the other in order to have the peak
fall in the adjustment range of the trimmer. Very suspicious.

After doing this, I verified that the current draw when running 10 watts on 20
meters was in line with the other bands. But when running 100 watts, I still
get 3.5 amps!

Something funny is going on. Why was I unable to get a peak on 20 without extra
capacity across the bandpass filter trimmers? And why is the current drawn at
10 watts normal, but high at 100 watts?

This is not something new, I've just ignored it until now!

The bandpass filter alignment merely assures you have adequate drive to the
PA.
The LPF will have more effect on the PA current, as it determines whether
you have
a match between the load the and PA.

FW: [Elecraft] K2 Filter attenuation?

2005-05-15 Thread Dan Barker
I checked mine, and also got zero attenuation. Then, I remembered to turn
off the AGC. Results were much more believable, but still decent. My filters
had much steeper skirts, tho, if memory serves (it usually doesn't). BTW,
I'm running 2456's supplied crystals, and haven't looked at the toroids
since they were installed.

Let me check sent items, I know I said something last year.

...

Found it!

Do overs!

What I really proved is that the AGC circuit works really wellg.

Nobody spotted the error in my Setup, I.E., AGC OFF not specified.

I just reran the test with AGC off. Results are still excellent, but not as
perfect as I reported yesterday.

Bandwidth
Setting Peak
0.00 -41
0.10 -35
0.20 -34
0.30 -31
0.40 -30
0.50 -29
0.60 -29
0.70 -29
0.80 -30
0.90 -31

1.50 -32
1.75 -33
2.00 -34
2.25 -32
2.49 -33
OP1 -36

My perception of No Attenuation comes from my standard practice of cycling
between 0.90, 0.50 and 0.20 (-31, -29 and -34 respectively) plus the AGC
working made me think it was flatter than it is. However, 5db isn't too bad
if the S9+ interfering signal disappears.

Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456

snip
It looks fine, although I would move the two wider filters a bit to the
right.
There looks like about 6-8 db difference in attenuation between the widest
and
narrowest filters, which is probably on the high side of normal (although
this
tends to vary).

[Elecraft] Elecraft Net Report for May 15-16th, 2005

2005-05-15 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,

Once again the Elecraft net was not skunked. Conditions were rather weak
but a few folks braved them and were recognized. I am sure there were
others out there under the noise but I was not able to hear you. But this
is not too bad a showing considering the CME which smacked the ionosphere
last night. The pictures on
http://www.prairiejournal.com/northern_lights/051505.htm are pretty
spectacular. Maybe soon I'll be closer to the Magnetic North Pole and
will be able to enjoy these sights in the night sky. Tom heard me on the
first net and gathered in a new one for us. Both a new op and a new
area. I am not sure but it appears KP4GL was in Puerto Rico! We'll see
when all the dust settles; he may have been visiting the lower 48
instead.

On 14055 kHz at 2253z:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - 008
KP4GL - Carlos - PR - K1 - 1253
AB9V - Mike - IN - K2 - 3993
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
K5HO - Jim - TX - K1 - 1453

On 7045 kHz at 0200z:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - 008
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
N9IV - Russ - IN - K2 - 4650

If there are any errors in the above lists please let me know. I am
pretty sure I got all the call signs correct but a couple of you were
pretty weak and the QSB did not help any. Only three weeks until the
second anniversary of the Elecraft CW Net. I hope the conditions allow us
to meet with as many previous guests as possible.

Thanks again for the attempt. If I did not hear you I am very sorry I
will try harder.

Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

[Elecraft] 7182 buzz appears after K69XV installed

2005-05-15 Thread W4sc

The PROBLEM

Installed the K60XV and the old 7182 (7181 -7184 ) Buzz appears. Just like
a bad penny.

Jack W4EFZ related to me that this was an old problem. The buzz is caused
by the LO and Reference frequency being co-incident in the 12 Mhz range when
the radio was tuned around 7182 and coupling back into the PLL. My K2 did
not exhibit this problem until K60XV mods were made, Proper PLL voltages
across all bands were also difficult to obtain.

Investigation of the original fix raised some question about component
values chosen for the PLL VCC filter (100uh and .001uf). Looking at the
specs on 100uh molded inductors of the physical size used that are available
from several manufactuers revealed that the self resonant frequencies were
in the 12 to 14 Mhz range. As I recall an inductor at SRF and above has a
low impedance (Atleast that's what I recall). It seems that this is just
the opposite of what one would want to keep the LO frequency out of the PLL
VCC supply pin

How it was cured

1) After much thought, I decided that an inductor with an SRF above the
highest LO frequency (about 25 Mhz) would be best... Also I wanted to
shorten the lead length as much as possible. An SMT inductor was chosen
with a value of 18uh and SRF of 27Mhz. Its foot print is a 1210 size
(120mils x 100 mils) and fit perfectly between the VCC pin of the PLL chip
and the VCC buss.

2) After a little more thought I decided to increase the bypass capacitance.
I just picked a .033uf as it was the first one greater than .01uf and less
than 0.1uf in the supply box that I came up with. It is in a 1206 size case
and is just long enough to reach from the PLL chip VCC pin to the ground via
originally used.

3) I also added a 0.1uf capacitor (0805 size) from the VCC buss to the same
ground via. The solder resist will need to be removed from the VCC buss
trace in order to install. The 0805 fit perfectly.

4) Reading the fix for the 7182 buzz, there were instructions to trim PLL
chip leads an keep lead lengths short. The added 68 pf capacitor used
had short leads,, but it looked like a big old lollipop antenna sitting
there. It was replaced with a SMT 0805 68pf NPO capacitor. The 0805 fit
nicely between the PLL chips' leads.

5) Looking at the two varicaps and 10k resistor added for 60 meter coverage,
which were supplied with the K60XV, and again remembering something about
shorts leads,,, They were replaced with SMT components. Two MMVL109
varicaps in SOD23 package and a 10K 1206 packaged resistor were used. The
lead lengths were reduced considerably as a result, plus the components are
now right down on the PWB surface.

The payoff.

1) NO MORE 7182 BUZZ (PERIOD)

2) The PLL voltages on all bands came up considerably. After setting up the
PLL (L30) on 160 and 80 meters, all other bands fell into place and WELL
with the specified ranges with plenty of margin. No difficulties at all.

Do not try this at home

Unless you have a GOOD microscope (No, NOT the one your kid got with their
biology set for Christamas last year), or EXTREMELY GOOD maginifier, or the
eye of the 6 million dollar man, AND good soldering SKILLs, AND the proper
soldering tools, I would not reccommend trying to make this change as
oulined here. The parts are VERY SMALL. I used a 2 to 10x inspection
microscope and soldering rework station at my work.

Unless you ARE having the PLL problems outlined, I would not reccommend
making this change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you need this fix

Get the proper tools, and have the proper skills, or find the proper
experienced help.

Changing the leaded conponent values to meet the criteria outlined above
would probably suffice in the PLL VCC filter. Keep ALL leads on ALL changes
made with the leaded components as SHORT as possible. Use a smaller 68pf
leaded capacitor on the PLL.

For your reading, some applicable information.

Food for thought

Don't argue with success.

Well, I was faithfully listening but heard exactly zero...afraid the
conditions weren't quite a match for last time.

Next time I'm able to hear you, I'll check in with my FT-847 @100W for

same antenna system and we'll see if that makes the trip.
