[Elecraft] Sidetone lost on #4913 after installing DSP

2005-10-09 Thread Ken Bessler
I built and installed the KDSP2 module yesterday on K2 #4913.

Before installing, I ran a check on the radio and everything
checked out. I did not check the sidetone generator.

Now I have the DSP installed and it seems to be working.

Problem is my sidetone is gone! I pulled the DSP and put
jumpers in to bypass the headers - no help. I had W0WKS
listen on 10m while I sent a CW message - I'm sending. I
hooked up a 1/8 stereo plug to the CW jack and sent CW
- the audio cuts out and the rf meter indicates a signal is
being transmitted - just no sidetone.

Help?

[Elecraft] KAT1 tuning cycle.

2005-10-09 Thread Ron Willcocks

Hi,
I just built a KAT1 to put in the K1 I am taking to Norfolk Island
soon, and while it appears to work just fine, and remembers the setting of
my dipoles ( which have a low SWR in the CW portions) but I have to wonder
at how long it takes to tune, if I string the likes of a random length of
wire to it and try to get a match. (working it to a good earth peg)
It buzzes away in what appears to be a timed run, and starts at 9.9SWR
and works down, reaching the ultimate setting it will record and then
carries on buzzing for a few more seconds. Those little relays in there
seem to be working their butts off
I only ask this , as the KAT2 makes a match on the same antenna with
considerably less fuss. ( I am aware the KAT1 tuner does not have the same
L/C combinations as the KAT2)
Just thought I would try the random wire as I am taking 1/2w center fed
antennas with me as well for 80/40/30, but not knowing the layout of where
I am staying, a wire thrown over a tree might be handy.
I'll have to say the match it ultimately obtains checks out pretty close on
the KAT2 as well, but should there be all that activity when a tune is
initiated? I guess if I used a 1/4 w instead of a random length, with
slightly longer radials it might be better perhaps?

Perhaps I worry too much. :-(
Cheers..Ron ZL1TW ( will be VK9BRW from 1/11/05 to 10/11/05)

[Elecraft] Scrolling AView

2005-10-09 Thread Charles Greene

Hi,

This is a bit off topic, but there must be some computer whizzes out
there. I have ARRL AView to read QST, QEX etc. and when I look at a
full page, the print is so small and distorted I can't read it. When
you look at a half page you just can see the top half of the page and
you can't scroll down. I tried screen resolution of 1024 X 760 and
800 X 600 but no change. I had another program that I could only see
the top half too, and their tech support told me how to use Internet
Explorer to start the program to use IE to scroll up and down. That
was on Win98. I tried that on WinXP and it doesn't work or else I'm
not setting it up correctly; probably the latter. Can any one
help? I called ARRL, but probably didn't get the right person as
they didn't know anything about it.

2005-10-09 Thread k4zm

Ken:

First I would suggest that you go into the menu and select ST-L and then
press the menu button to enter the Menu Edit Function. Then tap the display
button until you hear the sidetone. It sounds like your K2 setup has been
set to the wrong Sidetone source in the firmware. It should be set to U8-4.

[Elecraft] KDSP2

2005-10-09 Thread Rolf

Hi,

I have built the KDSP2 module and installed it into my K2.
In the Denoiser Menu I can hear a distinct differens between
nr 99 71 and nr 00 71 and also when changing the decay value.
But in the Autonotch Menu I can't notice any difference in the
audio regardless of the settings of Beta and/or decay.

Do I have a problem here with module?

One way to check it is to switch to USB mode and tune in WWV (10 MHz here)
and then tune 1 kc lower (.00). You should hear a hetrodyne. Then engage
the auto notch and the hetrodyne should disappear. It does on mine.

The BEST way to determine if the AutoNotch DSP is running correctly, and I
sure it is, is to go to the 40 meter band when all those SW Broadcast

2005-10-09 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Chas,

The QST View images are .TIF files, so whatever program you have on your
computer that is associated with TIF files is the one that will be used.

You can change the associatiation from Windows Explorer - click Tools,
select Folder Options, and in the box that opens, select the File Types tab.
This will show the list of file associations - scroll down to TIF and select
it, and if you want to change the association, look at the bottom of the box
Details for 'TIF' extension If you want to set it to IE, click the change
button and use the resulting resulting dialog box to select whichever
program you want to use.

[Elecraft] 4Sqrp's KD1JV swr/pwr meter sold out!!

2005-10-09 Thread Bart W0IIT
Hi Gang,

Our 2nd run of KD1JV swr/pwr meters is now sold out. That is the bad
news---the good news is that the 4Sqrp group is now discussing another run
of these neat little kits. However, we are just in the discussion stage and
nothing has been decided.

Again a big thanks to Steve for allowing us to kit this meter. Also, a huge
thank you, to all of those that have purchased the kit.

As you know, the proceeds from the sell of this kit, plus the sell of the
tenna dipper kits are what finances OzarkCon one of the premier qrp
forum events of the year!

Incidentally, plans are now underway to make OzarkCon 2006 the biggest and
best qrp forum to date!! So plan your spring getaway around the 28th and
29th of April in beautiful mid-America!!

tnx agn es 72, Bart

Since the ability to set filters when using the RTTY mode is different than

do you use 1000 Hz as the center frequency?

[Elecraft] RSGB HF Convention

2005-10-09 Thread Stewart Baker
Have just returned from the RSGB HF Convention. My first visit last year was
good, but this year it was even better.
Lots of good mentions of the K2 in presentations.

It was a pleasure meeting those with K2's and those either building or
contemplating building one Great time.

Maybe next year we can all get together on some more specific K2 programme.

Re: [Elecraft] Center Frequency when setting RTTY Filters

2005-10-09 Thread Jeff Stai

You want to set it to the center of the two tones you are using for AFSK. If
1000Hz is your Mark frequency, and 170Hz is your shift, then you should center
at 1000-(170/2) or 915Hz.

You can do this graphically with Spectrogram using the techniques detailed on
the Elecraft Builders Resources pages. Set the cursors based on the AFSK tones
from your RTTY modulator software or hardware. Then center the filter peak
between the two cursors.

hope this helps! - jeff wk6i

SSB filters when in RTTY mode unless RTTY filters are set) do you use 1000 Hz
as the center frequency?

RE: [Elecraft] 3 element beam

2005-10-09 Thread Paul T. Rubin
Yes I have found that my three element 80 meter beam at 190 feet seems to
slightly outperform my 30 foot vertical run with a four foot ground stake as
a radial. I can easily hear signals that have a signal strength of one
milliwatt.

However I am experimenting with a full wavelength 80 meter vertical with 1.3
million pennies as the ground-plane. You have to use the old pennies, as the
new ones are copper plated zinc, and will make galvanic noise. For the same
reason, the pennies should be spot welded, not soldered, as the dissimilar
metals in the solder also cause noise.

Also feed line losses become a problem at these low power levels. I want
every microwatt of my milliwatt. My tower is located seven miles away from
the shack, so I use two parallel twelve inch copper pipes, spaced four feet
apart to prevent arcing, and suspended sixty-three feet above the ground by
Kevlar ropes to telephone poles every fifty feet. I circulate a mixture of
50/50 distilled water and ethylene glycol through the pipes for heat
dissipation, and to prevent freezing.

Are you actually a licensed Radio Amateur? You don't sign with your call,
and your posted questions are getting progressively more bizarre.

...Looking for a small (pack-away in a suit-case and going to bahamas
on a cruise line for vacation antenna.) I found three on the Yahoo
search
that looked good. the buddiepole, the Ventura, the miracle whip

each one claims to have all band and each one says has at least some gain

The small portable antennas do not show gain over their full sized big
brothers.

For direct comparisons of portable;/packable antennas, see HFPack.com.
Vertical antennas are compared at
http://www.hflink.com/hfpack/antennas/shootoutvertical2002.html and
horizontal antennas at
http://www.hflink.com/hfpack/antennas/shootouthorizontal2002.html .

Beside efficiency, of course one must be concerned about size and
ruggedness. The Miracle Whip is quite small, and for some this outweigh
its low efficiency. The Ventanna is helically wound with18 inch sections
and is very rugged as well as doing well in the HFPack 20 meter Shootout.
The Buddipole is a rugged antenna with tapped coils on rigid forms, rather
than a more fragile BW Airdux (tm) style. Take a look at all the antennas
on HFPack.

I use a Superantenas MP-1, which in its small version can be carried inside
its own loading coil/sleeve. I am informed that some travellers have been
required to placed their MP-1's in checked baggage sic ethey might be used
as a baton or club. (No one has yet made me do this with heavier -- much
more suitable for clubbing -- laptop batteries.)

For QRP, you want to use the best antenna possible, to make the
maximum use of every watt. A beam certainly has a lot more gain than
a vertical.

RE: [Elecraft] 3 element beam

2005-10-09 Thread EricJ
That goes for ANY power level, not just milliwatting. The gain of a beam can
often (not always) squirt more power where you need it to go than a
vertical. Sometimes the low take-off angle of a GOOD vertical can trump a
beam, though.

I have only one problem using a beam...one I can live with. Hi. Many QRP
receivers are very hot with low noise. That coupled with my TH7DX at 60'
means I can hear a lot of stations that would never be able to hear me. A
beam gives you gain on both receive and transmit, but a 100 mW output signal
effectively doubled or even quadrupled with a beam is still a pretty puny
signal for the guy at the other end.

But you never know. I have two rules:

1. Never tell them up front you are QRP. It's an ancient Black Magic
incantation that makes people deaf.

2. Call every station you want to talk to regardless of the S-meter. The
worst that can happen is they won't come back to you. I can't tell you how
many QSOs I've had with 100 watters who were S3 to me and (because of Rule
1) I was S5 or greater to them with 5 watts or less.

I might add a 3rd rule, but at the risk of stepping on some toes:
3. Stay away from QRP frequencies unless you are rock-bound. You will find a
lot more activity and hams willing to dig deep for weak signals on the FISTS
frequencies and the low end of the band of choice. FISTS guys even seem to
be immune to the QRP Deafness Curse.

Anyway, a beam is a great QRP accessory. Any time you have an opportunity to
throw more metal higher in the sky, it can be worthwhile.

BTW, I hope you are going to report back with your ham experiences aboard
the boat. I was thinking that many of the recommendations you received for
antennas ignore the fact that you are actually at sea. Many of the
recommendations are going to fold right up in those conditions, though they
would work fine in most portable conditions.

Below is the original announcement from Wayne.

Ron AC7AC

---

The K2's VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator) may be susceptible to
low-frequency modulation by very large power transformers, such as
those in linear amp power supplies and antenna rotator controllers.
Such modulation can usually be eliminated by simply moving the
equipment away from the transceiver. In difficult cases, magnetic
shielding can be used, and we've created a modification kit for this
purpose (Order #K2VCOSHLDKT).

The mod kit provides a smaller replacement core for transformer T5, a
high-permeability ferrite sleeve, and associated hardware. The ferrite
sleeve is installed over T5, greatly reducing the effect of nearby
strong magnetic fields. In addition, slug-tuned inductor L30 must be
electrically disabled since it, too, is affected by magnetic fields.
With L30 out of the circuit, the VCO inductance can still be adjusted,
if necessary, by slightly squeezing or spreading the turns of T5.

The kit is priced at $10. For more information, see our parts order
page:

[Elecraft] Poor Man's Spectrum Analyzer

2005-10-09 Thread Matt Osborn
The Poor Man's Spectrum Analyzer I'm building uses a varacter driven
cable tuner as its front end. The cable tuner has an input impedance
of 75 ohms. Most instruments have 50 ohm input impedance and my usage
will be primarily with 50 ohm devices.

Maybe it isn't worth worrying about, but I'm looking for a convenient
way to convert from 75 ohm to 50 ohm input impedance. I've seen some
writeups on building a 50 ohm to 75 ohm broadband unun, but the
articles were incomplete (or my knowledge level is too low to
recognize a complete article). The analyzer covers 5MHzto 500MHz.

Does anybody have any advice? Leave it alone, build an unun, buy an
unun, any other options?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 9th, 2005

2005-10-09 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening All,
First off: Happy Thanksgiving to all you folks North of the Border! I
was listening to the Aurora Net based out of Abbotsford, British Columbia,
Canada a few days ago. They were happy to have me QNI from Oregon cross
mode on the KX1 I've been loaned. Worked quite well but they did require
a relay. Not sure if it was me or if it was the NCS not catching my fist
but all was well after the relay. They wished me a Happy Thanksgiving
too. Very friendly group those Canadians in 4, 5, 6 and 7 lands ;) I
listened on the KX1 for almost an hour until they finished up. Then I
moved on to another contact with the KX1 until Patricia came home. I did
experience a bit of difficulty with the Elecraft paddle unit starting to
work itself loose. Made sending a little more interesting than
necessary. Any hints? I plugged my Code Warrior paddles in to finish the
QSO then went to dinner.
Tonight I was a few minutes late for the beginning of the net due to
the party for our local 90 year old. I turned on the rig and took off my
coat only to have Mr. Hammond call me. I asked if he could call the net
as I found my reading glasses and followed along. It is pretty tough for
me to see the radio or the paper with the glasses which I use to drive!
Getting old and my eyes are changing fast. Astigmatism and far
sightedness means I can't see with them or without them! But with a
series of lenses I seem to get along fine. Especially on the computer at
a fixed distance. Soldering is most annoying!
The propagation was pretty good on this end but I did have a few folks
mention QSB. Poor Roger was having problems with his paddles so his call
sign came out as variations on a theme ;) The weakest station to check in
today was Ray from North Carolina. His antenna choices are not as good as
the ones he has at home so I had to dig a bit deeper. The slant four at
the end kept coming out as FV. But I finally got enough K2HY to figure
out who it was. Lastly I got Bruce, W0QQS, in MN who is bravely holding
Winter at bay. He told me it is in ND now so Ken should be a bit chilly.
However Ken is one who sits in the live nativity scenes and laughs at the
snow ;) What a collection we all make! Thanks for the fun, guys! Gary
thinks we may be doing something right. He wrote me a note two weeks ago
when I mentioned the wall of sound in response to my first true CQ. I
listen to other nets and try to emulate their bonhomie. Seems to have
made a difference.

At 2303z (sorry for being late guys) on 14050.36 kHz (the difference
between Tom's and mine):

N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - 008
W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423 QNI #10!
VE1RGB - Gary - NS - K2 - 2519
K1EV - Bill - CT - K2 - 2152 QNI #55!!
N7NLU - Karl - OR - K2 - 4227 FB sig Karl considering you are over the
ridge from me ;)

W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
K3IDX - Roger - KX1 - 416
AK2B - Tom - NY - K2 - 4482 Also a fine signal into OR
K4BEH - Pat - GA - his K2 #5061 is still a work in progress. Good luck on
the build!

K2HYD/4 - Ray - NC - KX1 - 608
KJ7BS - Mark - AZ - K2 - 439
W0QQS - Bruce - MN - K2 - 3646

Thank you again for a job well done Mr. Hammond. Without you in the
middle of the country my job becomes more difficult. Today we had great
propagation in stark contrast to last week where it was tough to get
Indiana and Forest Grove, Oregon on the list. As ever if there are any
errors in the above listing please write with your corrections.

Re: [Elecraft] Center Frequency when setting RTTY Filters

2005-10-09 Thread Bill Coleman

On Oct 9, 2005, at 1:43 PM, Charlie, W0YG wrote:

Since the ability to set filters when using the RTTY mode is
different than LSB/USB if used for AFSK, what center frequency do
you use? Perhaps I should rephrase this. When setting filters in
the RTTY mode (the K2 defaults to the SSB filters when in RTTY mode
unless RTTY filters are set) do you use 1000 Hz as the center
frequency?

I went through this a few months ago. Initially, I set things up for
the Low Tones (1275 / 1445). However, when I went to reprogram the
KDSP2 filter, I found that it would only move to center frequencies
that were multiples of 100. This made it impossible to set the filter
in the center (1360).

Now, you must know that I have my K2/100 modified with the KI6WX
1.9 kHz filter. It's really like the old stock filter - about 2 kHz
wide, but with less passband ripple. If you have a wider filter, you
might consider using higher frequencies. This places the second
harmonic higher in the passband, outside the filter range.

After some consideration of the problem, I ended up picking 1500 Hz
as my center frequency, and placing my tones at 1415 and 1585. The
next problem I had is that I could center the adjustable bandwidth
filter on both modes (RTTY and RTTY REV). This was solved by modding
the BFO to increase the range. Adjusting the BFO range is kinda
tricky. As you increase the range, the steps the BFO move become
courser, so there's more opportunity for slight frequency variations
as you change filters or switch modes. I managed to increase the
range just enough to get all the passbands centered on 1500 Hz.
That's all you want -- just enough range to get those frequencies
set. For this reason, using a frequency like 1500 Hz may be better
than trying to use the standard high tones.

The adjustable bandwidth filter is a real benefit on RTTY. With just
a few adjustments, you can get some really nice filters set up for
digital use -- something that would have cost a lot of money in other
rigs.

For RTTY, I use the progression OP1, 1.0 kHz, .5 kHz and .3 kHz. OP1
is good for scanning the bands, 1.0 is good for tuning in a crowded
band, and .5 kHz pretty much is single-signal. .3 is kinda narrow for
RTTY, and it will clip some of the signal -- but it does work great
for PSK31.

For CW, I use the odd progression of 1.0 kHz, .4 kHz, .16 kHz and
OP1. I don't like tuning around the CW bands with OP1 unless it is
really vacant, like up on 10 or 15 meters these days.

About the only downside of running RTTY with the K2/100 is that you
can only use about 20-35 watts. The KPA100 will get HOT very quickly.
PA efficiency gets really poor at this level.

Re: [Elecraft] Poor Man's Spectrum Analyzer

2005-10-09 Thread Bob - W5BIG
Hi Matt,

You can use two resistors to make the signal source think it is terminated
in 50 ohms and make the SA think it is being driven from a 75 ohm source.

I posted a diagram of the circuit here:
http://w5big.home.comcast.net/50ohm_to_75ohm.gif

The first resistor is 43.3 ohms in series with the input to the SA.
The second resistor is 86.6 ohms to ground at the signal input.
(87 ohms isn't a standard 5% value, but you could put two 43 ohms, 5%
resistors
in series). 1% metal film resistors are even better if you are getting into
the UHF region.
The leads should be as short as possible. With this arrangement,
you have an easy-to-build wideband matching circuit without transformers.
The loss is 4db which can be accounted for when you calibrate the SA.

Subject: [Elecraft] Poor Man's Spectrum Analyzer

If you do this, don't use OP1 as your FL1 filter. The second harmonic
of your tones will be in the passband when you are transmitting,
otherwise.

I recommend higher frequencies. I ended up using 1500 Hz as the
center of my RTTY filter passband.

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 9th, 2005

2005-10-09 Thread KJ7BS
I checked in to the ECN today. Interesting! I will be checking in on a
weekly basis. CW speed was a little fast for me, but it gives me practice
to copy at higher speeds. My keying was not good today (some days I can't
send CW for my life) so I commend NCS for copying me.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 9th, 2005
