RE: [Elecraft] K2 Anomaly

2005-11-28 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A few years ago that anomaly got a lot discussion along with the one in
which the code speed will suddenly pop up on the display.

IIRC, the most likely cause was that one of the DAC's that monitor the
controls and reports any change was right near a switch point, so very minor
variations on voltages or even just tiny changes in the response when it is
polled for data will sometimes cause it to report an change in the value by
one increment. Of course, the K2 is designed to display the change whenever
something like the power or keyer speed is changed, so it pops up on the LCD
for a moment.

Two things. First, as you are turning the main tuning knob, it is
quite possible you bump the power knob in the process. This will
cause a power change.

Second, as you are turning the main tuning knob, the vibration to the
rig may cause the power knob to move slightly, enough to signal a
change in the K2 firmware.

I have this happen with the power and also the keyer speed,
occasionally. I wouldn't worry about it.

K2 Anomaly

I have experienced an anomaly; at least I think it is an anomaly on my K2.

When I am rotating the VFO knob the frequency display will disappear very
briefly and be replaced by my power output setting, then change back just a
quickly to the frequency display.

I have not been able to duplicate it with any degree of regularity; it just
happens and goes back to normal. The rate of change on the VFO knob does
not seem to determine when this occurs.

It does not seem to have any effect on performance. Has anyone else

2005-11-28 Thread Jim Sheldon
Tom,
I've been working hamfests around here, showing off my K2 and having lots of
fun. I asked the guys at Elecraft to find me someone with a KX1 to help me
out as I was getting a lot of questions about it. Wayne talked me into
getting one myself, and when I ordered it, I said I wasn't going to get that
crazy paddle as I liked my own homebrew paddles better. He threw it in
anyway, and warned me that "It would grow on me". I built it, I tried it,
and I found that for some strange reason I like it. It has a feel that's
totally different than any other paddles I've ever used, but it took all of
30 seconds to get used to it. The last hamfest I attended was the first one
I took the KX1 to. It was well received by everyone, and everyone that
handled it was amazed at how easy the "Funny Looking Paddle" was to operate
with. All I have to say about the KXPD1 is "Try it, you'll like it."

Tom,

I am strictly a 'single lever paddle' person - in fact I have trouble with
most dual lever paddles --- but the KXPD1 is quite easy for me to use. I
really don't know why, but it just feels 'natural' to me. I don't own one
myself, but have built several for others and found it to be a pleasant
paddle to operate. I may buy one of my own even though I likely will not
own a KX1 - I will have to create something to mount it on.

I find the KXPD1 to be just fine. For a lot of rag chewing, I prefer my
Benchers, but that really isn't what goes on (for me at least) with the
KX1. I tend to make QRP QSO's, maybe 3 or 4 exchanges, or do some QRP
contesting like the Spartan or FOBB. The KXPD1 doesn't offer much
tactile feedback, but it is sure convenient and a lot lighter than the
Bencher. I find I can get some adjustment in the feel by sliding the
boots in and out a little.

[Elecraft] K2 Headphone Jack Problem

2005-11-28 Thread Todd Fonstad
Hi all,

My newest K2 (#4865) has developed a problem. The headphone jack, J2 on the
RF board, does not mute the speaker when a headphone is plugged in. I can
poke around into J2 from the front panel with a plastic alignment tool and
sometimes be able to make a temporary fix, but this is unsatisfactory. I
looked through the Elecraft website this afternoon, thinking I had read
something about this sometime ago, but was not able to find any references
to it.

I suspect that J2 is defective but thought I'd ask this august body for
advice before tinkering with it. I don't believe any of the innards of the
jack are open for inspection anyway.

I get the posts in daily digest form, so if you have a suggestion, you could
post either to the reflector or to me direct.

[Elecraft] Jumping K2------> No longer jumping

2005-11-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks to all who responded to my former problem, which was that my K2 would
shut down and bark raucusly when power was set to 12 w, or higher; while at the
same time reverting to a formerly used frequency.

I switched to a higher capacity power supply, and have not been able to
duplicate the problem. I trust the problem is resolved. The weaker power
supply must have been shutting down momentarily upon overload, although I could
not detect it through metering. So, all is well at the moment. The little rig
did fine during the CQ WW test, to my great satisfaction.

And now, special thanks to my good friend Roy, W4WFB, who suggested the power
supply was the culprit. I have dubbed him my Elecraft Wizard. He is one of
Elecraft's biggest boosters, and it was because of his love for K2s that I
bought #4758 in the first place.

It is amazing how much help is available on the reflector, and how quickly it
comes. Thanks again, everyone.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 AUX I/O connector

2005-11-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Paul and all,

Yes, you can fry some circuits in the K2 and KPA100 by connecting a PC
serial port to the K2 with a commonly available 9 pin cable - the connectors
fit, but it is wrong, and it is not a K2 unique problem.

We should all take the KIO2 and KPA100 'AUX I/O' designations that the K2
uses for that DE-9 connector seriously and explicitly - THIS IS NOT AN
RS-232 CONNECTOR - (and neither does it state that it is an RS-232 or a
serial connector). The fact that it just happens to be a connector that is
commonly used in the PC world as a connector for RS-232 serial port
connector does not make it one, and furthermore that does not say that any
and all similarly looking connectors are for the same use. As an example, I
work regularly with a sound mixer board that has DB-25 connectors on the
rear panel, but never would I make any assumption that they are RS-232
connectors - especially when they are marked something to the contrary. To
throw another fact into the pot and stir it a bit: the DB-25 connector on
many PC type computers is a printer port, even though that specific
connector is defined as an RS-232 connector, and similarly, all RCA jacks
are not for audio signals! One should never assume that a particular type
connector contains any particular configuration of wires - that is machine
specific information and the machine manual must be consulted before
reaching any conclusion about the use of a particular connector.

As a side note, RS-232 is a signalling protocol, and yes the oficial
standard does define some connectors (DB-25 and RJ-45), but the DE-9
connector is NOT defined in the RS-232 standard. The K2 AUX I/O connectors
use 3 pins that are RS-232 compatible, but even that does not make it an
RS-232 connector - one must check the machine documentation to determine the
pinout and directional usage of the connectors before cabling to them unless
you are following the machine manufacturer's specific instructions or using
the manufacturer's supplied cables.

Just as with multi-pin power connectors and microphone connectors, one
should know that the plug (or jack) and cable are compatible before
connecting them (that should be true for all cases, not just for the K2).
The KPA100 and KIO2 manuals give explicit instruction on the proper cable
configuration and provide suitable warnings about avoiding the use of a
'standard' (really means common) computer serial cable.

Apologies about the rant, but if it saves just one K2, it was worth it.

73,
Don W3FPR

FW: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic

2005-11-28 Thread Dan Barker
Question one:

The Rig Control and Info data streams are documented in the KIO2 Programmers
Guide (http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KIO2%20Pgmrs%20Ref%20rev%20E.pdf).

Example:

DTE: Tx data says: fb0001406; (please set VFO B to 14,060 Kcps).

DTE: Tx data says: fb;(To what frequency is VFO B set?)
DCE: Rx data says: FB0001406; (VFO B is set to 14,060 Kcps).

DTE: Tx data says: KYcq*cq*cq*de*wg4s*wg4s*wg4s*k; (D-oh! - BUT - the last
WG4S and K will not be sent - short buffer)
   1 2
  123456789012345678901234
DCE: Rx data says: KY0; (Buffer not full)
DTE: Tx data says: KY4s*k; (send the rest of the message).

Anyhow, download the pdf, hook up a dumb-terminal (local echo and local
linefeed) and play with your radio to get the hang of the protocol. Most of
the fun will be in handshaking, as some commands are very fast and some
aren't (usually involving relays or the ATU).

Question two:

If you build the KIO2, you also build the cable, and it's OK. If you use a
different cable, you must assure by some other means that the pins used for
AUXBUX, ALC, etc., are not passed through to the DTE (computer). The choice
of a DB9 may have been inopportune, and some users have keyed their jacks
only to take proper plugs (slot the shell or break off/stuff a pin).

Yes, it's easy to make a mistake, but I wouldn't call it a design flaw. If
you plug your K2 DC-In to the 120VAC wall, something might fry too.

DB25 is often a modem, but probably more often a Centronics printer. IDE
cables will go in with pin 1 towards the Power receptacle as easily as away
from it.

If you put your finger in the spark plug wire from your car while it's
running, it hurts (your finger - not the car).

The KIO2 pins are chosen as the signals needed in "outside" boxes - KAT100,
KPA100, KRCn - NOT as RS-232 defined signals.

Question three:

YES!

If the RS-232 is only using GND and TX/RX (cw switching), how does it
get rig control info from software like DXLab and HamRadioDeluxe?

I've heard you could fry the K2 RS232 board by using the wrong serial
cable - which I think is a design flaw as these cables (null modem vs
straight through) are not marked differently so it's easy to make a
mistake.

Should I open the cable I'm going to use up and make sure only three
pins are connected?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic

2005-11-28 Thread designer
If the RS-232 is only using GND and TX/RX (cw switching), how does it
get rig control info from software like DXLab and HamRadioDeluxe?

I've heard you could fry the K2 RS232 board by using the wrong serial
cable - which I think is a design flaw as these cables (null modem vs
straight through) are not marked differently so it's easy to make a
mistake.

Should I open the cable I'm going to use up and make sure only three
pins are connected?

thanks and 73,
Paul

DO NOT CONNECT RS-232 to your KIO2 without opening all unused (by RS-232)
pins. ONly Sig Ground, TX and RX go from computer to K2. All other lines on
the KIO2 are not RS-232 and can't tolerate the +- 15V the computer will
supply.

[Elecraft] KX-1 sudden decrease in power

2005-11-28 Thread Albers
When I was getting ready to check into Elecraft CW Net last night I hit the
buttons to let the ATU do a quick check of the antenna and was stunned to see
that the output power was only half a watt, even with the external 12V gel
cell. Other observations:
- on my most recent trip I was getting 3 - 4 W
 - problem exists on all three bands
- external meter agrees
- I unplugged the ATU and installed the jumper - problem remains.
 - battery voltage 12.8 per KX-1's display
 - I exercised R4 to be sure it hadn't gone flaky on me. Output power varied
smoothly, but still only .5W at max.
- I've done voltage checks on Q1, Q4, Q5 and Q6 as called for in the
troubleshooting section of the manual, and all seem OK.
- Receive seems fine on all three bands

Anyone had similiar problem? Solution?
Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 vs IC-7000 for satellite use.

2005-11-28 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
Being very pedantic, it does have two VFOs (A and B) but does not have two
receivers.

But for me the show stopper with the K2 for satellite use is the inability
to change the transmit frequency via computer control while transmitting. In
the short term the IC-7000 is more what I want as I have the K1 / KX-1 /
IC-703 anyway.

I am sure K2 will make its way here early next year though.

2005-11-28 Thread Fred Jensen
As the CQWW rolled to a halt (OK, suddenly crashed at Z), the band
became very quiet, as in no signals between 14000 and 14070. Never
heard a peep from anyone on 14050. Checked tower ... still vertical ...
checked SWR -- normal, checked rotator and it was at 350. SFI was in
the 80's, A=2, K=1. Called a couple of times, no reply. Don't know
what to say.

I don't believe that either the K2 or the Icom IC-7000 are suitable for
satellite use. For optimum performance and minumum frustration, you really
need full-duplex, cross band capability. You must be able to transmit on one
band, while simultaneously receiving on another band. I don't think the

[Bit of a ramble]

I am currently wondering exactly what to do on the K2 front - I may buy the
IC-7000 because it has 2m and 70cms and can be taken out portable (with a
decent battery), also some of my portable locations have 220 volts available

and there are some very small switch-mode power supplies available. The
IC-7000 would solve quite a few problems in one easy-to-shift package - want

to get out on 2m, 70cms as well as HF.

Not being able to adjust the K2 TX frequency via CAT control makes the K2 +
transverter option unrealistic for satellite use, this would have been my
main use for the K2. The IC-7000 can be adjusted while in transmit.

The IC-7000 downside is RX current drain (1.2A), but solar cells can
compensate for this. Cost-wise it's much cheaper than the K2 + options +
transverters, but obviously the K2 is a different beast. And I have the KX-1

/ K1 / T1 combination anyway.

On the satellite side I am really waiting for the P3E satellite and may
stick to the 1.3 / 2.4 (and higher) GHz side of things anyway as I'm sure
the 2m / 70cms transponder will be pretty full.

What I think will happen is that I'll become familiar with the K1 first,
then try a side-by-side comparison with the K2 while out portable. I see the

K2 purchase being put back a year or maybe two - we'll just have to see.

Maybe a visit to FDIM in 2006 is needed to help make the decision - if
finances and US passport requirements permit.

[Elecraft] K1 Thoughts

2005-11-28 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Hi,

Bought K1 kit with backlight option. When reading what follows remember that
I'm getting older (aren't we all)...

[1] After checking that the U1 fits snugly into the socket the next
instruction is to remove it. IMHO it may be safer not to do this - just one
less thing to get wrong, but not a big problem.

[2] After assembling the front panel I have both a 100k and 220 ohm resister
left over. I've check many times. Maybe these are R17 and R18 which aren't
in the list or the circuit diagram.

I will not get any more K1 assembly work done this week I think - got to
manage the computer systems for a big cards tournament this coming week /
weekend.

FWIW got the Buddipole working very well with my IC-703 but used different
tuning values to those in the Buddipole documentation. Should be out
Saturday / Sunday with IC-703 and Buddipole, still got to tune the KX-1
properly.
