[Elecraft] 12V Gel Cell

2005-12-16 Thread Fred Jensen

A little off topic but this is the battery I power my K2 and KX1 from so...

Without intending to, I allowed the 12V sealed gel cell 12 Ah battery to
dischage to about 6.2V when I finally discovered it after coming home
from a trip. It was slowly being discharged, not open circuited.

I started charging it through a light bulb, and then directly from a 13V
voltage regulated supply. Charging current began at about 1A and rose
to 9A when I stopped it, and put the battery outside in the cold. It
wasn't hot but was warmer than when I started.

When it was at about 35 deg, I started again with charging it, it
started at about 2A and after about 30 mins, had risen to 4.5A. Still
not perceptebly warm although not 35 deg either.

1. What is the probability that I will get this charged to power my K2?

2. Should I trash it and just go get another and be more careful in the
future?

3. If I just let it float on the 13V voltage regulated supply, what are
the odds I'll set the house afire or have a major chemical explosion?

4. Is there some charging protocol I could use to try to resurrect this
heavy rectangular thing.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Frequency Calibration

2005-12-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Samuel,

I can only add to what Ron has already stated that in addition to setting
the reference oscillator correctly then running CAL PLL, you must also run
CAL FIL to store the proper BFO values in the EEPROM.

Take a look at the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website
http://w3fpr.qrprqdio.com for a complete description of the entire process.
The reading is more complex than actually doing the procedure.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Frequency Calibration

2005-12-16 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
No, that's not "normal", Samuel. You can get frequencies within 20 or 30 Hz
on your K2. For example, my K2 indicates 10.000.01 right now for WWV at 10
MHz. That's an error or 10 Hz.

Two things can cause the error: operating procedure and the calibration of
the 4MHz master oscillator in the K2.

The K2 calibrates the dial readout using the 4 MHz master oscillator on the
control board as the reference for a built-in frequency counter. That's why
the setup procedure for CAL PLL and CAL FIL requires connecting a probe to
the PLL oscillator and BFO. The PLL oscillator frequency is measured when
you run CAL PLL, and the BFO is measured when you do CAL FIL.

There are a number of ways to set the 4 MHz "dead on" without any external
test equipment. They can be found under the "builders resources" section of
the Elecraft web site (www.elecraft.com). See "Notes on Adjusting C22 to put
the K2 on Frequency" under Construction Notes.

Once you have done that your frequency display should be within 20 or 30 Hz
across all the bands.

It does take proper operating procedure, however. The easiest was to be sure
you have a station properly tuned in is to zero beat the carrier with
sidetone in CW mode. An alternative, if you can hear subtle changes in
musical pitch, is to tune in WWV and adjust the tuning for minimum change of
the tone frequency as you switch from USB to LSB.

Both of them should produce an frequency error of a few tens of Hz, not
more.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I tried to calibrate C22 using W1AW
and found the following

W1Aw Freq
1.8175Mhzdelta = 0.07 Khz
3.5815 delta = 0.13 Khz
7.0475 delta = 0.30 Khz
14.0475 delta = 0.61 Khz
18.0975 delta = 0.73 Khz

Is the delta at higher frequency higher normal?

I have a K2 S#: 1866. with 2.04P firmware..

[Elecraft] Polar Bear Event Link to Samuel Morse!

2005-12-16 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

This Polar Bear Xmas Event is turning out to be something special.
It looks like the reporter who will be up on the mountain with us is
related to Samuel Morse! She just sent Ron, WB3AAL, an email with the
news. So when you make a CW contact with a Pulpit Rock Polar Bear on
Saturday, remember that one of his descendents will be watching!

I plan to include a special " Morse Logo" on the certificate to
celebrate this fact. It will be the Morse Coat-of Arms. This is a very
special logo and we will not do it again for a long time. So try to bag
a bear on Saturday and remember that a Morse will be listening!

RE: [Elecraft] FW: K2/100 SWR accuracy

2005-12-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Carl,

Yes, the ALC power leveling will cause jumps in TUNE mode, I try to work
fast enough to work with it - it will settle down after a bit, but try that
only at lower power levels (35 watts and below) where the KPA100 is rated
for continuous duty cycle.

Make up a graph of RF voltage vs. calculated power and put it at your work
area - that way you can monitor the RF Voltage and determine the actual
power at a glance (make it a big chart so it can be easily seen). If you
are using an RF Probe, enter the RMS voltage values, but if you are using a
'scope, enter the peak to peak voltages.

Formulas: Vrms^2/R = Power
  Vpp^2/8R = Power or for a 50 ohm load Power = Vpp^2/400

setting of C1 was checked, and I do now recall that the "sweet spot" is
really hard to find using the first method in the manual. The range
over which an indicated 1.0 SWR is displayed is much to large. I used
the alternate method of measuring the TP4 null voltage, and seem to have
a bit better results. My first choice of a DVM was one with 2-1/2 digit
resolution (e.g. the smallest digit displayed is an integer millivolt).
Then I tried a higher-end Fluke meter with two orders of magnitude
better resolution. I found the adjustment of C1 could be significantly
improved. This is not possible using the K2 SWR indication only, or
using a cheap DVM with typical hardware store accuracy

I am still awaiting the arrival of some non-inductive resistors so my
wattmeter settings can be refined. In the meantime, I have been
tweaking R26 and R27 in an attempt to get things working a bit better.
The one problem I am still rassling with is the K2s tendency to change
its power output in the tune mode. Just as I am about to zero in on a
power setting - lets say 30 watts as indicated by an external and
trusted wattmeter, the actual power output from the K2 jumps around - up
and down, back and forth - by several watts. I am left chasing the
setting allover the place from 20 to 40 watts.

This is really driving me nuts!I suspect this is what may have led
me to buttoning the K2 up a couple of years ago before I had done my
best calibrating power output and SWR indications.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ K6XX Kit Help Page New!

2005-12-16 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
I've been receiving requests for help in finding
instructions on how to build the K6XX CW Indicator Kit.
All who have any questions can go to Tom's, N0SS Website
or look on my website at a new K6XX Kit Help Page. You'll find a very
nice picture of a built board with capacitor color-coding on the caps
and a nice view of the resistors. I also put a spec picture of the
yellow LED there too.

I still filling orders so If you haven't received your kit etc yet, I'm
working on it. The SMD LEDs are presently on back order for the WPM+
Button Option.

[Elecraft] Polar Bear Madness December 2005 Run

2005-12-16 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

This Saturday, Dec. 17th we plan on having another Polar Bear Moonlight
Madness Run. The actual full moon is on Dec. 15th but we are going to do it
on the weekend. The weather is going to be cold and clear so we should have
a good view of the moon for operations. So far there are 11 different Polar
Bear station that will be on the air. There will be a reporter from the
Allentown, PA Morning Call newspaper at the Pulpit Rock location. If you did
not hear about the interview I had on the Amateur Radio Newsline this past
week you can check it out on the EPA QRP Club web page.

All details about operation and the Amateur Radio Newsline interview can be
found at www.n3epa.org and click on the Polar Bear Events link. For details
on the Saturday operation click on the December link once in the Polar Bear
page.

There will be a lot of Elecraft rigs being used by Polar Bears!!

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka
