Re: [Elecraft] Modifying Wattmeter Slugs for QRP

2006-02-03 Thread Larry Phipps

Before you open it up, you might want to see if you can find some
documentation on the Model 4410A multi-range meter. I have one, and it
has switchable scales from 0-2W to 0-1000W using a single 4410-3 slug.
It has an amplifier in it with precision dividers I think. Much of the
Bird stuff is searchable in patent apps if you want to figure out how
they did things.

You might want to see what's inside this sensitive slug, as that's the
key to the multiple scales.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to modify, say, a 2-30MHz/50-watt slug for 10
watts and if so, any experience to share? What was the right resistor value?
How was the linearity of the meter with the modified slug?

Thanks for any experience or insights.

[Elecraft] K1 Calibration Data Retention

2006-02-03 Thread Mike Morrow
There was a recent discussion on this list about a six-band limit on the number
of bands (out of the nine HF bands which may be assigned) for which the K1 MPU
would retain LCD frequency calibration data.

Wayne has provided the following clarification:

> The calibration table has one entry for each of the bands
> from 160-10 m. You'd be able to maintain separate calibration
> on all of your modules, on all bands.

There is thus no need to worry about losing any band cal data should you come
up with different filter board bands numbering more than six.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Digital Signals Mod

2006-02-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Pauli unfortunately is a silent key, but you want to consider an alternative,
take a look at my webpage (http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com article on A Fixed Audio
Output for the K2. If you take the audio out to a spare pin on the mic
connector (pin 5 for the Elecraft configuration - remove the mic header jumper
for the pin used), then all signals needed for an external digital modes box
are present at the mic jack - audio out, mic AF in, and PTT.
I might add that Pauli himself surprised me by ordering one of these boards
claiming that it was an easier and more simple solution than his interface
implementation.

I recently mounted one of the Fixed Audio boards in a K2/100 - I laid the
capacitors and the resistor down flat on the board and attached the wires to
the board with no connectors, and the audio out plugs onto the mic
configuration header. It fits nicely in the space between the control board and
the front panel - and there is even a hole in the control board near the left
mounting screw that can be used to attach the board. I will eventually update
my webpage with this additional info, but I'm too busy right at the moment.

I do have boards available at $3 per board plus $0.50 for 1st class mailing US
domestically - $2 air mailed internationally), but no more kits - if you are
interested in a board and documentation, email me direct (without '[Elecraft]'
in the subject line), and I will supply my address (or look on QRZ.com).

Results are in: REPLACE.

I got 3 replace, 2 test (but then replace anyway) and 1 test.

Thanks, All!

a) To test: Charge it up, discharge it to 11 volts, compute percentage of 7
AH.
b) To dump: load into truck, drive to recycling center, unload where it says
"Batteries".

I'll go with option b). Shame the freight would be more than their value.
I'd be happy to send the "good" ones to a new home, but with new ones at
$16, there's not much way I can see to get them anywhere except local.

much luck making contacts. Previously I had used a Yaesu rig putting about

I have almost completed a 35 watt amplifier (HFPacker amp, I think its

I was wondering if you or anyone else is using the K2 barefoot and if so how

2006-02-03 Thread vze3v8dt
For a while I was using my K2 barefoot with a Rigblaster to run PSK31 on 10m
for the PropNet PSK project. It was last summer when I was doing so and I
noted several openings. I made a couple of local and a few other PSK31 QSOs
with it on other bands prior to getting it hooked up for PropNetPSK.

I hated to use the K2 for a dedicated project so I've since taken it offline
and have been using it otherwise on lots of bands, mostly CW, but some SSB, all
QRP and quite effectively. I tried using an HTX10 for a dedicated PropNetPSK
rig, but the frequency stability and sensitivity leave a lot to be desired
compared to the K2!

Re: [Elecraft] OT-SLA Battery advice

2006-02-03 Thread Don Brown
Hi

I would try cycling them once or twice to assure they will meet specs.
Connect each one to a variable power supply set for about 13.8-14.0 volts
and let them charge until the current draw is just a few mA. Limit the
maximum current with the power supplies current limiter or install a 2-5 ohm
10 watt resistor in series with the power supply and keep the maximum charge
current below 1/3 of the amp hour capacity of the battery. For a 7 amp hour
battery that would be 2.1 amps. After charging the battery then discharge it
down to about 11 volts and see how long it takes. Multiply the time in hours
by the current to get the amp hour capacity. This should be somewhere around
the rating of the battery. You can use a old car headlight or a tail light
as a load to discharge the battery. Do not allow the battery to discharge
below 10 volts or you may damage it. A heavy load like a headlight will not
give quite as much capacity as a lighter load like a tail light but you
should get a feel for the condition of the battery with these tests. If the
battery voltage falls off quickly under load or it will not take a charge
then the battery is most likely shot and should be recycled.

And when you are finished with construction, you will probably find a
collection of the same parts lying where they had fallen underneath
something else on the workbench.

[Elecraft] OT-SLA Battery advice

2006-02-03 Thread Dan Barker
I have a bunch of 1,200 VA UPSs for my computers. These run two batteries
each. 3 of them have bad batteries. I ordered a case (6 units) of BB7-12 to
fix the bad ones.

The bad UPSs each appear to have one good battery and one bad battery. I
hate to take 3 apparently good batteries to the dump, but I hate to have my
computers crash during the 60 seconds it takes my generator to come on line.

Should I try to match up (How?) the used-good batteries with each other,
discard them, test them (How?) or just dump them in the "Battery" bucket
down at the local Recycling Center?

guess "digital mod kit" are not available anymore but I'm not sure.

Christine is amazing! The guys at Elecraft should post a photo of her at
work.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Digital Signals Mod

2006-02-03 Thread Pete Zawasky
I'm about to install my KSB2 and was looking at the modification listed on the
website that brings out the microphone jumpers and signals necessary for
digital modes via a ribbon cable and small PC board. I've monitored this list
for a while and have not seen much posted regarding the mod.

Mike

I use my K2 a lot on PSK31 and MFSK16 but but still use a RigBlaster Plus
and have made no mods to the K2 for the digital modes.

It would be nice to have it all in one box, but this way I can switch rigs very
quickly. I also use an external speaker so I can monitor the received signals
easily with the laptop soundcard connected.

[Elecraft] K2 Digital Signals Mod

2006-02-03 Thread Mike Heitmann
Greetings All,

I'm about to install my KSB2 and was looking at the modification listed on the
website that brings out the microphone jumpers and signals necessary for
digital modes via a ribbon cable and small PC board. I've monitored this list
for a while and have not seen much posted regarding the mod.

Have many done this?

Is the PCB available somewhere? (I was considering "deadbug style" construction)

Thanks & 73 de Mike, N0SO

[Elecraft] Re: Can rf interference get into a K2?

2006-02-03 Thread jferg977
I kept the dialogues addressed to my rfi problem off the reflector
because I thought them too OT. I was delighted with the ideas many of
you suggested and will work my way through them. I have a tough
problem with proximity of everything due to ham shack in small boat.
I'm a bit sorry problem couldn't have been holes in k2 because that
would have been much easier to fix than what I am going to have to do.

Many thanks to you all for the help

All component locations on the Control board should now be filled
except for the following:
* C44 (top side of the board near the microcontroller, U6). This
capacitor will not be used.
* J1 and J2 (bottom side). These two connectors are provided for
an audio filter option (KAF2 or KDSP2). An audio filter should
not be installed until the K2 has been completed and tested.
