[Elecraft] EQP bad start for EU-Elecrafters
I listenend saturday from 15.00z onwards. Nothing on 10 an 15, very weak signals on 20, only one elecrafter, and running qrp-contest of AGCW-DL with reasonable traffic. I gave up after one hour. [Elecraft] Is this normal?
Fellow Elecrafters: Overall, my new K2 is performing wonderfully. However, I notice that if I set the requested power to some nominal level (typically 5 watts) the indicated power often creeps up to maybe 6 or 7 bars, under normal keying (typically 20 wpm). If I go to TUNE, the power will start to creep up almost immediately from 5 to maybe 6.5 Watts. I usually do not stay in TUNE mode for more than a second. This happens with both a matched antenna (I use a tuner and an antenna analyzer, and get very close to SWR = 1, before I switch the K2 into the circuit) or a dummy load. Is this normal? Also, when I'm in TUNE mode several numbers are displayed. The first one looks like the power level. What do the numbers after the power level mean? [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement part II
I almost forgot ECN :) If any of you are still in need of a contact with another Elecraft rig after the QSO party is over please join us either on 20 or 40 meters. You'll have fun with your rig here too. We trade serial numbers, locations, weather reports, how well your kids are doing, and all sorts of odd things. I've also had folks check in each and every Elecraft rig they have every made. For some of you that is quite a lot. Last time I looked there were nearly 400 serial numbers in the database. But there are a lot more rigs unaccounted for. Currently Wayne and Eric have sold over 5300 K2s, nearly 2000 K1s, and over 1500 KX1s so we need to hear from quite a few more of these rigs. I know some of them are in far flung corners of the world but as the solar cycle goes back up you will get a chance to work on ECN. However, yours truly will have a hard time with the wall of sound when hundreds of you try to check in at once. But, that is my problem not yours ;) Where there is a will there will be a way to work through the mob and get you each into the log. Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3pm PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 6pm PST) 7045 kHz Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for further details. Thank you for the web space Dan. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement
Howdy Folks, I hope you all are having fun in the EQP. I have been on a few times during the day and have worked a number of you. Sorry if my rig started to chirp but I did not get the battery charger in gear in time. The fire is going well. Sam is quite happy in his box next to the stove and the next few loads of wood are drying nicely. Tomorrow those chunks can warm me as I bring in a few more loads to dry. Friday I got myself snowed in and the power did not go out. What a treat! I did get on the air a few times and worked a couple of folks but mostly I just listened to the sound of CW. It is soothing as I work on my papers. I dug out and got down to town for some supplies so I will weather this storm. Oddly enough the daffodils down in Banks are blooming like crazy. They don't know what Pat's daffodils are going through only a few miles away but 2000 feet higher. We have at least ten inches left out of the 18 inches of snow we got starting Thursday night. I did get a chance to experience winter driving once again. My nephew and I went to see Roger Penrose talk about tensor analysis, conformal mapping, and how it relates to Cosmology. It was good to hear the talk and good to talk with my nephew. He has got a good head on his shoulders. We talked about losing Pat and he was quite helpful and understanding. I hope he can come up this summer and help on the house and property work. After he dropped me off at my truck the snow got very heavy with very large flakes. I drove while watching the fog line since it was very difficult to see straight ahead. I stopped in North Plains to eat an ice cream sundae. Pat and I used to stop there after errands. It was a good way to get my blood sugar up and wait on the storm a bit. The flakes got smaller so I started for home again. The drive to Buxton was better. I could see the tracks of the vehicles which had preceeded me. I hoped none of them had driven off the road because I could no longer see any of the road markings. Third gear and 30 miles an hour was fine. I got to Buxton and while getting my mail a friend drove up and told me the road report for the next eight miles to my house. I got off the paved road and was relieved to have the gravel under me. I drove upward as the snow got deeper but only lost traction once. Second gear held all the way. The worst part was when I went through the transition from Tualatin Valley weather to Pacific Ocean weather. The snow got much deeper fast. Luckily it was unusual for Oregon with very dry snow. I drove through it pretty easily. The EQP is great fun. I worked a few strings and then searched around and worked some others. It is interesting to meet you all in another venue :) I know a lot of you from working with you on ECN but the party is a different way to meet. I did start with Ken, W0CZ. That was nice. We chatted a bit. I was his second contact and he was my first. Quite fitting since he was my second contact when I started ECN! I also ran into Wayne a couple times. That was nice. I've yet to hear Eric but I know he is out there somewhere. Maybe tomorrow morning I'll find one or both of them. I tried a few calls on 15 meters but no luck. 20 was good, but 40 was better. 80 is currently a bit noisy but I worked a few there then back to 40. I think I will take a break and solder a bit. Can't spend all my time on the radio :) Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3pm PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 6pm PST) 7045 kHz Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for further details. [Elecraft] KX1 signals peak at low audio beat frequency
First post to this list The KX1 has a fixed BFO designed for 600Hz offset; this is where I expected signal audio to peak. I validated what I thought I was experiencing that signal audio peaks closer to 400 Hz than 600 Hz, lower than expected. I put an audio spectrogram on the audio out of my KX1 (Visualization Software PC version). Input to KX1 was the XG2 signal generator at 7.040 MHz. I set up so that I was showing a good S/N and then manually swept the end-to-end response of the entire RF-to-audio path by slowly tuning the receiver across the signal plotting response peaks. End-to-end response shape seems normal falling off 20 dB per octave far above the peak and rising faster far below the peak with a nice rounded peak that is obviously sharper at the lower filter settings. Results tabulated as follows picks off the peak and -6dB points of the end to-end-response for four different filter settings: Filter setting Peak Audio -6dB High -6dB Low Maximum 592 Hz 1214 Hz 159 Hz 1.0 500 Hz 697 Hz 259 Hz 0.5 442 Hz 554 Hz 321 Hz Min 444 Hz 516 Hz 337 Hz As you can see with narrower filter settings the maximum signal tune point is a beat-frequency tone just north of 440 Hz. The signal is already more than 6 dB down by the time I have tuned to the design 600 Hz offset point, where I would zero beat another signal. Have other KX1 owners noted signals peaking at a low CW tone? I find myself listening to some low notes on weak signals and this means I do a rather poor job of zero beating. I don't have an RF frequency measurement tool but am suspecting that the BFO could be set more optimally in my case. Does anyone know if there is a way that I might trim the BFO frequency 100-200 Hz lower? Or, possibly there is something else going on and I am looking in the wrong place? I would be running the rig for SSB, data, and a little CW (call me Philistine!!) but rarely at full power. I'd use the 30 A circuit but leave the in-line 20A fuse Elecraft provides in the power cable to the K2/100. It'll let go ONLY in the event of a serious short (I've not lost one yet in several years of running the KPA100) and provides direct protection to both your power panel and the rig. Depending upon how sensitive that 15 A breaker is, you might get away with using the 15 Amp circuit. Breakers, like everything else, have tolerances and you may find that one will handle as much as 20 A just fine, especially intermittently such as you running the K2/100 in CW or SSB modes. Of course, you'll not draw anything near the peak on data. You need to significantly de-rate the amp for continuous-carrier modes. That will drop the current drain considerably. OTOH, that breaker may show a maddening tendency to decide it's had enough and open at exactly the wrong moment. That's why I'd use the fuse and connect to the higher-current circuit breaker. Fred, You point is well taken, but 0.010 is very fine and it is akin to soldering with a strand of hair. The biggest problem I have with solder that thin is that it is often not stiff enough which slows the soldering process down. I use my 0.010 only for SMD work and use 0.020 for most everything else. The 0.20 is a good compromise for me and I can work well with it. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > And use the finest size you can find. Makes control of the amount of > solder much easier. [Elecraft] KAT100 Control Cable
Comrades, The KAT100 Manual suggests that if a control cable between the tuner and the K2 needs to be longer than about 2 feet, it may need to be better shielded. My continuing struggle with RFI, in a system where the 23 foot veritcal whip antenna feed and rfi ground meet at the rear of the kat100 tuner which is located about 4 feet from the k2 leads me to want to imporove this cable. I had used the shielded multi-conductor which came with the KPA100 to fabricate a control cable about 6 feet long with the pc interface pigtail maybe 2 inchs long. Initially this setup worked great on 80l, 40,and 20 meters at 100 watts. Then, while tidying up the installation to better suit the XYL, I somehow changed something which allowed rfi on 40 meters to invade the system at any power level much above 12 watts. We found that by coiling the control cable as much as possible given its length and the distance required to reach the tuner, that I could transmit on 40 meters up to 50 watts without a lot of rfi feedback. I have a radioworks isolator between the tuner and the k2 and a whole lot of ferrites on the control and power cables to the tuner. Power to the k2 is also beaded throughly. K2 is grounded separately. So the question is, what should I ask for to get better shielded multiconductor than that which shipped with the kit which by the way looked good to me.? It likely doesn't make much sense to try to help me trouble-shoot the installation since some of you have already given me a lot of very good ideas. I think I know what the variables are and will have to go through them one at a time and make certain that nothing has changed or if it has, fix it. Or there is nothing stupi lurking in there 73, John Fergusoin KI4NGH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Strange Problem. Just finished K 2 with SSB, DSP, 160 Meter and noise blanker. All is well and very well tuned. However, when i touch the mic connector with the slightest bit of static my audio mutes. the only way to restore the audio is to power off and on. Strange. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. [Elecraft] EQP from this end
Hi I crawled out of the cot at 1500z this morning and listened around 80 and 40m and the band was full of the RSGB ( BERU) CW Contest signals.no sign of (or room for) EQP signals, so it was back to the cot. I'll take another listen this evening here 0800 - 1200z and see if any Elecraft signals pop out of the ether. Band conditions on 80/40m very good down this way lately. Re: [Elecraft] questions
Hi The K2/100 will draw about 15-18 amps depending on the band selected at 100 watts driven into a 50 ohm load. Do not use silver solder it is hard to remove if you make a mistake or when components need to be removed to install options. Silver solder has no advantages in standard through hole PC construction. You should use 60/40 or better 63/37 rosin core solder. Did I see one is supposed to use 2% silver solder or is 60/40 ok? -- A supply rated for 20 amps intermittent commercial service (ICS), as recommended by Elecraft, will handle the K2/100 just fine. The actual peak current at 100 watts will vary from about 15 to 18 amps depending upon the band since there are small changes in efficiency. A popular example of a linear supply is the Astron 20A or 20M (M has volt and ammeters). Of course a higher current rating is fine too, and some operators prefer larger supplies so they can run several rigs from one source. Others prefer the redundancy of more than one supply if their total needs grow beyond the capacity of the 20 Amp supply. 60/40 solder is fine. You're starting to see discussion of changes in the solder recommendations as the world moves toward a ban on lead wherever possible, but the old stuff is just fine. Silver-bearing solder is fine too, but it is a bit harder to remove if that's ever needed. Just be sure that whatever you use is clearly marked ROSIN core. [Elecraft] Another amplifier idea for the K2
Seeing all the email traffic about amplifiers driven by a K2, I thought that I would relate my experience. Several years ago, I built a homebrew HF CW transceiver for 40, 20 and 15m bands, and I built an amplifier into a unit with a Transmatch to complement it. I used the EB27A from Communications Concepts, Inc., in Dayton, Ohio. (http://www.communication-concepts.com/eb27a.htm) It is a 300 watt amp that runs on 28 VDC. I was fortunate to be able to buy a 28V, 30A supply on ebay at a very reasonable price. The amplifier is fairly straight forward to build, though the instructions are not up to Elecraft standards (at least they were not those many years ago.) I purchased the solid copper heat spreader that they offer, and I mounted the assembled amplifier board and heat spreader to a heat sink that forms the back of the amplifier/Transmatch unit. I built low pass filters for the output from the filter design tables in the Handbook. With the purchase of my K2 (SN 5251), I added filters for the lower and upper bands. I can now drive the amp to more than 200 watts on all 8 bands with the K2 (I do not have 160 or 60 meter band mods installed). The amp has a nominal 13 dB gain, more on some bands. To make this work with the K2, I needed a T/R relay driver (a design is on the Elecraft website), and a means to activate relays to pull in the appropriate amplifier output filter. For this purpose, I kludged in a driver for an additional set of latching relays that are driven by the same signals that drive the latching relays for the output filters in the K2 itself. These new latching relays are used to switch power to the appropriate filter select relays in the amplifier. I also added a relay for a separate Receive Antenna, fooling the K2 into thinking that the 160 meter board is installed. In all, the experience with this amp has been good. I did have some problem with oscillations if the amp is left connected to the output filter with no load attached (like when the T/R relay opens!), so I have the filter assembly on the opposite side of the relay from the amp. This problem only occurred with my homebrew rig driving it, not the K2, so it may not be an issue for anyone else. If anyone is interested in more details or pictures, reply and I will be glad to help if I can. Do I really need to wear one for the KX1? 4. If any of the above tools are really needed, do you have suggestions on economical sources for purchasing them? -- The manuals are written to give the average builder a confident path to success. I've worked on boards more tender than that in the KX1 using a butane-powered "Port-A-Sol" soldering iron that was hot enough I could also mount SO-239 connectors, but it was out of necessity, not choice. If you are good enough with your uncontrolled iron, you can get away with it. The problem is that you only find out whether you are good enough by whether pcb traces or pads come off the board stuck to the tip of your iron. It's a bit late by then. Consider the cost of a good set of tools compared to the cost of your kits: A Hakko 936 ESD-safe soldering station is about $90. A good wrist strap such as the Elenco is all of $5. Nice Hakko flush cutters are a whole $11. A good plunger-type desoldering tool is $20. Those are prices from http://www.tequipment.net/ I have no connection with Tequipment other than as a customer. Certainly, there are many other sources. And sometimes all it takes is a little effort with what you've got on hand. For example, I found myself needing a good set of flush-cutters some years ago. I had lost mine - a natural consequence of working on large ships every day. If I forgot to pick up a tool when I was done, it'd be halfway to Singapore before I missed it. That day I had a grinder nearby so I grabbed a pair of cheap Radio Shack diags I had around for cutting stuff I didn't want to use my good tools on. I had noticed that, in spite of chomping through a variety of things, the RS cutters were still not nicked. So I used the grinder to sharpen them from the flat side, working carefully to avoid going too far. I just ground them to a flat face on that side. That was 10 years ago! They are still sharp and flat. Your mileage may vary. RS may have accidentally gotten some good steel cutters . My point is that you can get a little creative and adapt what you have on hand at times. I am a strong believer in learning to use the tools I have on hand to their best advantage. Still, that's no excuse for not using the proper tools for the job. Using the proper tools leads to the proper state of mind when working on gear. RE: [Elecraft] KX1 construction questions
Paul Yes, for the KX1 get the flush cutters - I have found the Lufkin or Xcelite 170M in Home Depot for a good price - they are often packaged with a nice set of needle-nose pliers and are relatively inexpensive. When handling transistors (particularly MOSFETS) and ICs, you should be using some type of ESD protection - and since the KX1 has the DDS SMD IC already soldered to the board, you must take ESD precautions throughout the build. If you do not use a wrist strap, work on an anti-static mat. Be careful with a non-temp controlled iron - they have a tendency to overheat, but if you are experienced and comfortable using the RS iron, you can get the job done - just be careful and be aware of the possibility of excess heat. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Hello everybody, > > My KX1 has just arrived and I am hoping to have construction > completed in time > for good-weather field operations. [Elecraft] K2 at WP2Z - comments and questions
Used my K2 (#3481) at WP2Z the past two weeks. Darn it, the time went fast. Used it to drive an Alpha 87A. I used a Heil HC-10 headset. This is the first time I pretty much used K2 exclusively both in a contest and before and after the contest. I have a few comments on using the rig and some questions as to a couple of weird things maybe someone can comment on. One thing I like about the K2 is it seems to be easy on my ears both for SSB and CW. And it was sure nice carrying on the plane in a small metal cushioned case. We keep 12V supplies at WP2Z so didn't have to worry about that. Comments: - Had an external temperature probe so attached it to the heat sink. Regardless of which of the three fan setups I used the heat sink would stabilize on the high end around 50C when having good runs. With the "FAN nor" the fan would kick in at 40-42C. Room temp was around 25-28C. Power out to the amp was around 25-32W, depending on the band. - Most of the time I had the RF gain control at 2PM and the AF gain control at 10AM. This produced sufficient audio and also let the strong signals stand out. This made it easier to keep up a fast run rate. - Found I used the preamp on 15M. Preamp was off or used the attenuator on 20 and 40M. On 80 and 160M used the preamp with a receive antenna. - VOX was set to .2 sec. - Used SF2 with OP1. NT was left on. NR was off. I find NR is too aggressive. Need to play with it to find much less aggressive set points for at least SF2. Any suggestions? It would be nice to set up the aggressiveness of the NR depending on the filter position. Maybe it already does that and I don't know how to set it up? - Before and after the contest I used the K2 barefoot on 30, and 60M with the 80M antenna. On 30M I set the power out to 100W and ran them. On 60M set the power out to 50W and had fun. Don't know what the swr was as I forget to bring one along this trip. The other bands I used the amp. - Before and after the contest I was on CW quite often. Since I was DX I wasn't concerned about QSK. Wish I was a better CW op. - On SSB, except for the one time problem on 15M, I got many good audio reports. I do have the mod that increases the compression. SSBC is set at 3 and SSBA is set at 1. Also I have the 2.4KHZ transmit mod. Problem? - One time when I went to 15M SSB their was reported distortion in my transmit signal and I could hear distortion in the received signal. The distortion sounded like the AGC was off, the RF gain all the way up and receiving a strong station. The signals appeared fine on the S-meter. Turned off rig and power supply for a minute. Powered back up. Everything was fine after that. - Took a break for a couple of hours. When I tried to operate I had a very hard time tripping the VOX. I literally had to yell into the mike. SSBA and SSBC had not changed. Turned off the rig and power supply and let it rest for a minute. When I turned it back on the VOX worked fine. These two problems are puzzling. Anyone else experience anything like this? Overall I am very satisfied the way the K2 performed in a contest environment. Made 9K Q'S in the 2 weeks I was on USVI. Golf, the surf, the sun and general goof off time got in the way to make more Q's. Can't wait till I am back there in October. Will take the K2 back with me. 73, N2TK, Tony ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 construction questions
I would especially recomment item 2. Things do get a bit close in there for one. Great tool to have in general. Radio shack used to have a nice pair for well under $10, I don't see them at their web site any more. Looks like it may have been replaced by one that also strips wire for around $10, but its hard to tell from the picture. A decent temperature controlled iron is in general a very nice thing to have. What you have will probably work but if you do a lot of experimenting and will be building other kits in the future, you might want to get a new iron now rather than later. 73 - Mike WA8BXN ---Original Message--- From: Paul Huff Date: 03/11/06 10:39:23 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KX1 construction questions Hello everybody, My KX1 has just arrived and I am hoping to have construction completed in time for good-weather field operations. RE: [Elecraft] K2 power out..
Jean-Louis, Only the Low Pass Filters are between T4 and the antenna. If you have an antenna analyzer available, you can sweep the low pass filters without a lot of effort. A sweep done from the antenna BNC connector can be meaningful even without taking steps to terminate the filter inside the K2, but if you want to see good SWR values within the passband, you should remove the W1 jumper and connect a 51 ohm resistor between the right end of the W1 position and ground. Check each band - the K2 uses latching relays, so you can power the K2 on, select the band of interest and then power off, the proper Low Pass Filter will still be selected. If you can do such an analyzer sweep, at least you can convince yourself that the low pass filters are correct - and if so, look elsewhere for the problem. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Bonjour, > > i am jean louis F5NHJ and i have a problem with my K2 #5371. > > Done on two weeks ( i'm retired) my K2... but got a big problem > with power > out. > > - I can't get more than 200 mW on all bands.. > > - RX doing well and i have done one QRPP qso on 40 whitout problem... > > After tests during these two last weeks and dozen of email send to Gary > (Elecraft team.. tks to him.!) : > > - I told him that it seems that there is a big cork just after T4. > > - Yesterday, i decided to change R50 - Q5 - Q22 - Q7 - Q8 .. Easy fix. Found D4 installed backwards. Kit complete and working 100 Percent. Thanks Howdy: Just commenced phase 3 transmitter test. Results: excessive current. Conditions: Using a 3 amp power supply. Set K2 at 2 watts power out. Cal current set to 2 max. Have analog watt meter connected to K2 and 50 ohm dummy load connected to watt meter. When "Tune" mode activated, I get "high current on display" it reads 8.0 and my power supply ammeter pegs well over 3 amps and shuts down after 5 seconds. This will also happen when the front panel output control is set to one watt. As careful and experienced as i think I may be, I certainly have a problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. [Elecraft] K2 #5413 is alive and well in RI
Hi gang: Just wanted to let y'all know that K2 #5413 was completed last evening and everything is working the way it should. I made a couple of QSOs this morning on 40 and got good reports. I hope to get on for a while this afternoon for the EQP event but will be gone most of the day. The K2 is going to "show and tell" at the CT RI Contest Group meeting today. 73, Ken K3IU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
