[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for June 4th & 5th, 2006

2006-06-04 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
Another two of nets were run this evening. The propagation was not all
that bad. QSB on both nets, QRM on 20 m, and QRN from summer storms on 40
meters. Most folks were experiencing fairly pleasant weather too. Well
except for those reports from California. 90 degrees is just too warm for
this time of year. You folks need to order some showers and 60 degree
temperatures. Then it would feel like Oregon ;)
It sure was nice to have my K2 back on the air. I've run the nets with
another rig but it is not the same! I'll stick with my K2 until I find
something better. Say another K2 :) Maybe when they get into the 7000
series. Currently number 2511 is holding up well. It taught me how to
copy and send CW so it will always hold a fond spot in my heart. How can
one give up their first love?
Next week we'll have our 3rd anniversary party. You may have to
provide your own cake however since this is an action at a distance
system. Much like gravity, electromagnetic waves travel in a vacuum. But
we do not have a social vacuum. The Elecraft CW Nets promotes friendship
and comraderie. We even have local weather reports for all those folks
yearning for a spring day in Fargo or a view into what it is like to cut
grass in Ontario :) Or those who wonder about me (don't worry, my mother
wondered about me too!) up here in the mountains of Western Oregon.
I'll go to bed this evening with a pleasant form of stiffness.
Yesterday's activities did wonders for how I feel and how I think.
Hopefully it will help me at work tomorrow as I try to find an answer to
my noise problem with some digital circuits. My first answer? Throw a
whole bunch of capacitors at the problem. I may have to take my
oscilloscope with me on the train. That should get some odd looks as the
train glides past the Tektronix campus where it was created! But a good
look at the digital and analog signals would tell me a great deal about
where the problem may lie. But, in lieu of that, I'll throw my caps at
the problem and hope for the best.
Then when I get home I'll attack the wood pile again. My father used
to come home from a hard day in the lab and work in the garden until he
was exhausted. More and more I understand what he was up to. The
vegetables were happy and he resolved his problems with a new ceramic or
alloy as he did physical labor. I'll cut and split wood because my
greenhouse was totalled by last winter's storms and I've not found time
nor the heart to rebuild. Maybe next year.

   But, the lists await =>

  On 14050 kHz at 2300z:
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798
N0BK - Bruce - MN - K2 - 3646
K4JPN - Steve - GA - K2 - 1422 QNI #20!!

N9IV - Russ - IN - K2 - 4650 QNI #40!!
W6BK - Dave - CA - ? - ? (this information may be on the crashed computer)
VE6ITA - John - AB - K2 - 5384

  On 7045 kHz at 0155z:
K6DGW - Fred - CA - non Elecraft rig :(
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031
VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968
K6DBG - Chris - CA - K2 - 3641
W0NTA - Dick - CO - K2 - 3900 (other crying Elecraft rigs in the shack too
:)

W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423
WF1S - Jack - MT - non Elecraft rig
N0BK - Bruce - MN - K2 - 3646QNI #70!!!
VE6ITA - John - AB - K2 - 5384 QNI #10!
ND0V - Greg - CO - KX1 - 1162
KG6RII - Timothy - CA - K2 - 3785

There was a DFZ call which was finally resolved to K?DFZ. I think I heard
a K2DFZ but I never was able to get a response to my QRZ DFZ? K

Any errors or fills for the lists are encouraged. Sorry Dave, I am sure I
have the data for your rig but I had a computer crash last Sunday too.
The data is on the HDD but I've not had time to dig all of the system out
yet. The OS is toast but the rest of the data and apps are in fine
shape. They are currently moving across the network so I can burn that
drive down and rebuild. The new OS and apps are almost ready for me to
Ghost the system to a storage drive. Then I will not have to worry so
much about rebuilding in the future. Way too much work to do all at
once. I will try to make the next time easier and less painful. Then I
may just burn down and reinstall when I feel it necessary. I'd been
limping for quite some time when the malware snuck in past the firewall,
the adware tools, and the virus protection. Once one got a foothold he
called all his buds. I fought a long battle but finally lost the OS as it
popped into non-existence. Luckily most of the system was backed up and
the rest survived intact. Just the time and effort to rebuild :( By next
weekend this all should be history and I'll have a fast computer again!
Right now there are four computers running across the network to get all
the work done. The other three are not required for these tasks.

Thank you all for a good three years. Running the nets has become even
more enjoyable over the years. I hop

[Elecraft] Serial #5577 on the air SSB and CW

2006-06-04 Thread ron_w

Hi
Today K2 #5577 put out it's first RF after a relaxing 5 day build (
it's not my first K2 build) and it all came up to specs nicely.
Thanks to the expert packaging of Christine, Marina, and Val, there were no
spare parts and nothing missing to really worry about.
What did cause a bit of head scratching was the fact I had 2 lots of green
*stranded* hookup wire, where one lot should have been solid core wire for
winding T4.hardly a problem worth contacting Elecraft for replacement!
Now I am not sure just how much difference stranded wire would make in this
case, but I thought I better stick with convention, but the major problem
was locating solid core hook-up wire? I haven't seen that for years here,
so I had to call on a bit of Native cunning.
I dug around and found some wire left over from either a KPA100 or a
KAT100.probably around #20 or #22 and covered it with thin heat-shrink
and pulled it down with the heat gun.
Both windings fitted in the binocular core OK, and there was *just* enough
room to get the 2 single wires through for the other "winding". The rig
transmitted just fine and I get "Specs plus" in the way of output,
including 12w on 10m.
Does anyone know if the stranded wire is included intentionally to use on
T4? I notice that Elecraft use stranded wire in the KPA100, but it is
Teflon coated and the strands are small and shiny ( more like silver plated?)

RE: [Elecraft] New KX1 with KXB3080

2006-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jim,

I do the KXB3080 installs for those who do not wish to do their own - it is
a little bit 'tricky', especially with the physical placement of the added
toroids and their leads.

That being said, I would not recommend that you attempt to install the
KXB3080 as you build the basic KX1. After you have done 2 of them, you may
be able to pull it off, but not the first, and the second is only a 'maybe'.

The problem is that you have no way of testing the basic KX1 until you have
finished both the KX1 board and also the KXB3080 option. If you encounter
any problem, it is difficult to determine where it may be. The KXB3080
changes both the receiver front end as well as the transmitter low pass
filter.

If you are expert at merging 2 sets of instructions and have a very good
photographic memory along with supurb confidence in your ability to build
without error, then you may try merging the two, but I believe if you had to
ask, you should not attempt it.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] New KX1 with KXB3080

2006-06-04 Thread Soaring Eagles
I apologize if this has been covered, but I didn't see it when I searched
the archives.

I received the kit for KX1 sn1519 just this week along with the KXB3080
board. Since there are a few changes to the KX1 board, I'm wondering if I
can do them as I build the basic KX1. I'm not sure how they affect the
basic operation without the KXB3080 board installed. I guess I'm just
looking to see if I can avoid having to change components that I just
installed.

If it's really better to build the basic KX1 then make the changes later,
that's fine, but I had to ask.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] K1 Backlight mod question

2006-06-04 Thread Randy Moore
The instructions for the K1 Backlight Mod (Step 6) say "DO NOT remove the
thin white plastic sheets which cover both front and back of the backlight
assembly." When I removed the clear plastic film, there was no white
plastic sheet underneath it. There is a white plastic sheet on the other
side which has the K and A printed on it for Cathode and Anode. Is there
supposed to be a white sheet on the side that gets stuck to the foam
insulator??? If so, do I need to request another backlight?

2006-06-04 Thread Fred Jensen
Well, that was a confirmation of the K2 RX! Heard Kevin at the noise
but readable on the K2. Unfortunately, I screwed something up while
making the 40m parasitic mod to the KPA100, and I can't transmit on the
K2 right now. Called on the TS-850, and found I couldn't hear him at
all. I consider this an A-B comparison, and my K2 wins.

[Elecraft] Rigblaster and K2 microphone (Heil proset)

2006-06-04 Thread Slater Tubman
This is sort of like yelling fire after the barn burned down. I know
that some smart soul out there has the answer.

I have a K2 with SSB adapter. Use the Heil Proset purchased from
Elecraft.

In configuring the microphone jumpers in a Rigblaster Plus, do I use
the configuration for "Elecraft 8 pin screw on" (page 8 in manual),
or the one for "Heil mics" as per top of page 9 in manual?

I presently am using the first option but am not obtaining
performance that is 100% predictable. The reason I have started to
question this is that I have problems using SSB through the
Rigblaster but not when connected directly to the K2. Process of
elimination would indicate to me that perhaps I should consider the
second option but I don't want to cause any problems in the K2.

I am revamping the shack this afternoon, trying valiantly to hide the
myriad of cables and wires that seem to breed on my desk. I am
believing that someone will have the right answer on this when it
comes time to put everything back together again.

which he thinks is also near SASKATCHEWAN..

I've not had the chance to look up the map yet, but know that I have for
sure, worked many folks from saskatchewan on the bands before, but never

Could some of your fine fellows, please e-mail me at the address below with
any info on shop/town names near the two places I mention, in the hope that
my friend might be able to visit them while in canada, and aquire me a BOOK
or TWO on our hobby from across the pond.??

I'm hopeing for Towns, City Names, Shop Namesand also shop names
possibly where this could be achieved...

Lets keep this OFF the list here guys... any answers ...please on a postcard

Re: [Elecraft] No Problems Here

2006-06-04 Thread Roland Whitsitt
No problems here either and that surprises me since I'm the builder. I've
hooked stuff up backwards here and there, transmitted without an antenna,
all sorts of du-fuss things. Had some problems during assembly but they all
got resolved. Building the k2 was one of the finest achievements in my life
and I hope to pass this rig to my son someday. At 2 1/2 he is already
plugging all his shoe laces into a toy phone and toy laptop and trying to
get somebody out there. I should take a picture of it. Looks like "Daddys"
radios with all the wires (shoe laces) sticking out the back.

Hi Everyone,

As I sit back and read all of the emails day after day, I often contribute
a email or two regarding some great DX that I often work on my K2/100.
After reading about all of the difficulties on the email reflector that,
some people have or having with the K2 or K2/100, Should I feel blessed ?
As I have not have one minutes problem out of my K2/100, it is one of the

RE: [Elecraft] No Problems Here

2006-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

You are in the majority with your 'no problem' report.

Consider that there are about 6000 K2s out there, and the average problem
rate reported here seems to be only about 3 or 4 per week. That is less than
200 problems per year or only about 3% of the K2 owners report a problem in
a year.

Some problems are 'self-induced' (something gets damaged while making a
change, acidental slip of a probe, etc.), and some are simply 'operator
error', the actual failure rate for the K2 or K2/100 is very low - I would
venture to say it is much less than 1% per year. If I remember my MTBF
calculations, that would indicate 876,000 hours between failures (yes, my
data is sketchy and therefore the calculation is inprecise).

Folks do report 'occurances' here often, simply because they know that they
can receive help with it. The result is that you will naturally see a lot of
problem reports on this reflector, and is not a reflection of the
'ruggedness' of the K2 - in my experience, the K2 is quite robust.

There was a moderate amount of activity for the TAC contest. I did not
hear a single LAITF competitor. Possibly those folks politely figured
TAC had seniority (which it did). Hopefully LAITF will be scheduled with
more care to avoid overlap next year.

Made only about 15 QSOs in TAC in a period of 2 hours. Most on 20M.

[Elecraft] TAC & LAITF ...a BUST?!

2006-06-04 Thread n0tu/Steve

Not really.

But it's the first time I've taking my radio to the field and not made
one single contact. Albeit I got off to a slow start by arriving at my
favorite radio site at 4:15 PM so LAITF & TAC were already going. It
took me about 15 minutes to get the antenna up and setup.

20m/4:30 PM - Signals we're very weak and very FEW of them! I tried
answering a few CQs (W7 and K4?) but nada!! Hmm... Changed out the old
AA-Lithium batteries in the KX1...it doubled my RF to 2.3W(20m) up
from <1W so figured this has gotta help but still no luck! OK, it must
be the antenna. I found another limb higher up and slung the fishing
weight (ala the David/Goliath method) up and over. After several tries
raised my inverted vee up another 10'. Now that's got to help things
for sure?!

Before seeing how things improved I decided to break for dinner (a
sandwitch) and watch the 'boys' play on the rocks. Getting back to the
KX1 I tried 20m again and still weak sigs and few on QRP watering hole
14.060? I did heard stronger sigs down the band so it must have been
open? 40m was heavy QRN and few QRP signals as well but same as far as
hearing other QRO stns? Later on 20m I started hearing EU DX stns as
the evening wore on. The only thing I can figure is that I missed the
short skip propogation by getting on late on 20 and 40 their was such
heavy QRN it masked the qrp sigs to no avail? So I was skunked!!Oh
well...?

I QSYed to the audio frequencies and practiced my harmonica for
awhile. The only problem with that is the goats think I'm calling 'em
for dinner. Cause I always feed them just after I play awhile. So I
dug out their grain treat while being mobbed by goats and then all was
quiet again including the QRP HFactivity as I gave one final listen to
20/40. I jumped on 30m a bit to see if I could raise SOMEONE but guess
I was just RF challenged for this outing! (sigh)

All in all it was a great goat/QRP escape. Steve/n0tu

RE: [Elecraft] K2 power control

2006-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeorg,

There is one more place to check before replacing U6 - check to see if U6
pin 8 goes to almost 5 volts during transmit (this is the chip enable
signal) and check that pin 7 has the 5 volt supply on it.

If pin 8 does have the 5 volts, then the firmware is properly enabling the
chip, but if the voltage is not present, the problem goes back to the KPA100
firmware chip.

If pin 7 does not have 5 volts on pin 7, then that must be fixed first -
check the regulator at U3. This latter possibility is not as likely since
the firmware chip uses this voltage too, and if you can turn the PA on and
off in the K2 menu, the firmware in the KPA100 is probably working.

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 5538 is alive

2006-06-04 Thread DickandSandy
Hi all

The base K2 is done. I have 10 watts or more on all bands. Rx sens is in
the 1/10s of microvolts. Thanks to N0SS the filters are aligned. Thanks
the email reflector I did not rip apart my transmit final circuit when I
only got 790 ohms on Q7 base in the automatic position of the DVM. WA2DKG
Jerry has been mentoring me along... The K4ZM photos were a big help, I am
sure glad all you fellas built the previous 5500 or so radios... I just
discovered the rtty function. Getting ready to build the SSB adapter, the
remote control adapter and rumor has it Fathers' day will bring the 100w
amplfier, but only the Elecraft sales dept knows for sure...

Thanks all for the help

Re: [Elecraft] Problem ... K2 Noise blanker is giving pulses

2006-06-04 Thread Dave

Robin

When the K2 is operating normally, there will be no pulses. These are only audible when making changes such as the DSP settings. The reason is the data lines are active
when changing the settings and cause interference.

It's not a fault...

Another day another challenge.

I have recently installed the 160m module and the 20 W ATU in my K2.
Now I discover the Noise Blanker gives very strong pulse when I click Display
and go into the DSP settings ... like on 14 Mhz is it most strong when I
display "S1 nr nt".
Pulses are at approximately 1 second interval and maybe one-fifth second in
duration ... NB is supposed to remove the pulses not add them !!!

On std. rcv. there is no pulse noise.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 power control

2006-06-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Don,

I checked the voltages during quick keydown.

U5 pin 5 2,5 V
U5 pin 7 2,5 V
U6 pin 3 2,5 V
U6 pin 6 0,06 V

It looks like U6 is killed. Pin 6 does not show 2,5 V during transmit. I
think I know what was happend ;-)

I soldered a new cable for my KAT100 tuner to extent the length. I
forgot to disconnect the AUX connector from K2 side. Pin 6 of U6 is
connected to pin 7 of the AUX I/O port.

I will replace U6 and test again.

Joerg,

You either have something wrong with the wattmeter in the KPA100 or have
something wrong in the path from the wattmeter forward power circuit to
the
VRFDET output from the KPA100.

During a quick keydown period (with only the base K2 powered or with the
PA
turned off in the menu), check the following points on the KPA100 (in
order)to determine at which point the voltage disappears - these should
all
be DC voltages - you should expect about 4 volts when the base K2 is
developing 10 watts or more:

U5 pin 5
U5 pin 7
U6 pin 3
U6 pin 6

U6 pin 6 is the KKPA100 output signal for the VRFDET line, and if you
have
voltage to that point, look for an open in the ribbon cable (pin 10).
