Kyle, That's what isobars are for! ;o) I understand that the average household draws enough power to keep two 60 watt bulbs running around the clock just from wall warts and electronics in standby mode. This is a big concern for folks trying to use alternative energy. The easiest fix is to use a power strip that can be switched off. Of course, finding the offending devices might take a little time... Even as an educated consumer, it can be a challenge to be an Energy Stahr *hihi* Cheers, Julius n2wn .Be grateful you can turn it off! Most things in the USA, if they p;lug in, can't be turned off. They go to standby meaning they are still consuming power. David, I do believe that is correct, but take a look at the KY command. With a computer connected, you can store many, many CW messages in the computer as ASCII text and send them using the KY command. Unfortunately, this command is K2 unique and is not supported by any of the popular rig control programs - but if you are writing your own app, it may be a good thing to include. I believe the K3 includes the same command, so perhaps it will be supported in the future. 73, Don W3FPR David Woolley wrote: Am I correct in my reading of the programming document in saying that one cannot program the message memories from the computer, but can only do so with a paddle key? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The internal K2 keyer is supported in TRX-Manager. There is a separate little K2 keyer windows that lets you enter text which is sent to the K2. I don't remember offhand whether that interface has memories like the main TRX keyer, but I suspect it does. [Elecraft] K3 shipping in 10 days...well, yes and no ???
Dear anxious K3 invoicees The following is my opinion based on nothing more than my own logic after reading the words published. Don't think that the flood gates will open up on Aug 31and that all of those first run K3's will hit the road. Read what it says: [snip] 1st Production Run K3 shipments are currently targeted to begin August 31. Sold out. 2nd Production Run K3 shipments are scheduled to begin early October. Sold out. New K3 orders received will be scheduled for shipment beginning in November. [end snip] As I read this, the first run radios will (may) BEGIN to ship Aug 31 but will likely continue to ship through early October when prod run #2 will BEGIN. Run #2 will BEGIN early Oct and likely continue through early November, when the 3rd prod run will BEGIN to ship. However, I am more than happy to be proven wrong, if the actual results are more favorable! :-) But I sure would like to see the FULL SPECs (ala ARRL Prod Review) for the RX ASAP! de Doug KR2Q ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've read all I can read about the K3 and I'm really tempted to order one. Money is no problem since I haven't spent my tax return yet. :-). So, having said that I would like someone to give me the best reason or reasons for buying a K3. I already have a K2 15 watt version and I love it. I work mostly CW with some SSB. I'm a ragchewer and I like to work DX also. I work a lot of QRP. I don't do contests or digital modes and my computer stays off when I'm on the air. I don't do dxpeditons and rarely operate outside of my home. Will the K3 give me much more than what I already have with the K2 with my style of operating? Keep in mind that I don't do digital modes so, that doesn't count and contesting doesn't count either. Will the K3 give me much more than what I already have with the K2 with my style of operating? Keep in mind that I don't do digital modes so, that doesn't count and contesting doesn't count either. I would think you'd be interested in the improved receiver and filters, espcially for rag-chewing when signal quality isn't ideal. I don't do digital modes, either, but one of the features of the K3 I'm looking forward to is its ability to decode/encode digital modes without a computer. One of the reasons I haven't bothered with digital is not wanting to take the time to figure out how to do it. Being able to just tune in a signal and go might give me the opportunity to try a mode I haven't been able to try before. I'm a light-weight contester so the second receiver option allows me to take a step up in the contesting world without much effort. The 6m capability gives me a new band to explore. This will be my first 6m-capable radio. I think the common theme is that the advanced features and specs of the radio for a person who doesn't normally put a lot of demands on a radio give me the opportunity to try something new without a lot of extra effort or equipment. It seems like that might be something appealing to you. I guess this is a very personal question and the factors that are important to one person might not matter to someone else. Probably the best reason I can think of to go ahead and buy one now is very simple. If you don't really like it - you can probably sell it for near whay you paid for it on the open market. My experience with S/N 013 tells me this radio is going to be very hard to get you hands on for some time. Once more of these hit the streets and people start to hear what I hear when I put on the headphones - they are going to want one NOW!! So - I wouldn't hesitate to order one - then make up your mind. I would almost bet you that the K2 will become your camping radio and the K3 will take up the center space in your operating table to stay. And as someone else said - six meters. It's a fun band in the summer and in 5 years when the spots return. [Elecraft] K3 modular kit
Hey gang I'm getting ready to order a K3 and have a few questions about whether to order the modular kit or the factory assembled version. My concern is what is involved in tuning and aligning the modular kit? I have no test equipment and am not very good at this sort of thing. Could someone that has one tell me just what is involved in the alignment and tuning of the rig? I did build K2 5846 with all the options and the only real problem I had with it was a solder bridge on the basic K2. [Elecraft] K3 modular kit
I have ordered the kit/modular K3 - and am looking forward to building and getting it up and running. Previously I built K2 # 54xx and had little trouble with all of the testing and alignment involved in that project. The reflector email list - was a great help in that. It looks like the K3 will be 1 level easier to create - even though it is a much more complex communications transceiver. Luckily, all of the pre-built PCB boards are pre-tested and aligned in whatever way each board needs, to operate. So I'm guessing we will be working 1 level higher in the construction hierarchy, at the functional-operational level, bringing it out of the hanger, onto the runway. When complete - we will be able to fly the rig, and even understand to some level, why it flys! We will have done a lot of our solo flying, in the hanger. :) Fred, de N3CSY Boardwalk for $500? Re: [Elecraft] KIO2: Programming message memories not possible?
Well, perhaps there is another way. There are many programs that can generate CW to key a radio. Why not set one up with the messages you want to place in memory, then for each message, push the K2 buttons to program a message, then have the computer send that message. When it is finished, push the buttons to finish the process. This should get the messages in the memory just the way you want, without worrying about making mistakes while you send the code. It _should_ work. Haven't tried it, though... On Aug 22, 2007, at 3:37 PM, David Woolley wrote: Don Wilhelm wrote: I do believe that is correct, but take a look at the KY command.
