Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wiki
Yes, and Twiki (if not Wiki) provide security controls for who can view/edit etc, so the owner of a topic can nominate who can edit - which is great for 'official' articles etc. Peer pressure is a wonderful thing and used for a limited site like this, would most likely work quite well enough. But, lets not start a huge long debate on this reflector - the idea has been put forward, maybe Elecraft will wish to follow it up. Re: [Elecraft] Have we gone Off Track?
You're right, though since the K3 is modular assembly I doubt if you'll see the kind of questions and answers the true kits generated. As someone with 3 or 4 weeks still to wait for delivery, I was really looking forward to reading the experiences of those who received the initial K3s. That hasn't happened - only one new owner has posted. The real difference, I think, is that the K3 appeals to those whose main interest is in *operating* and not building. Those guys are interested in different things. I also think this will tip the balance toward QRO instead of QRP. There are too many diverse interests in the membership now for every list posting to be of interest to all. -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? [Elecraft] T1 connections/Fridge Full of Beer
Well, Ken, that reminded me of something I was thinking when I was building a RockMite once. I'm not talking about excess here--just normal moderate healthy enjoyment of brewed beverage--I can't touch the stuff when I'm building anything! I thought I could wet my whistle as I often do in the evening, but it don't mix with the finer parts and keeping from making mistakes! I noted that to my wife and she had a good laugh, Maybe this hobby is better for you than I had imagined. The other thing OT: I have the T1. When operating in the field, as I do with the ATS3B--say I'm running a half-wave inverted L antenna with one radial. In that case I use a BNC to two-pole adapter running the radial off the black side, and the main element off the red side. Would I benefit from some sort of ground attached to the ground post? Even a large metallic object? Or would this not have any effect? Just wondering the general concept here. Jonathan KC7FYS From: Ken Alexander [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Don. This sounds like a project for Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless, I'll make sure my fridge is full of beer before I start on this! 73 - Ken Once plants and animals were raised together on the same farm - which therefore neither produced unmanageable surpluses of manure, to be wasted and to pollute the water supply, nor depended on such quantities of commercial fertilizer. Re: [Elecraft] T1 connections
Jonathan, I don't really know why the T1 would be off topic here, but ... The answer to your question has two parts: 1) in theory, a half wave wire is an antenna complete in itself and does not need anything else - and that is true whether it is fed at the end or at the center or anywhere in between. 2) in practice, the tuner circuit should have some reference to tune against, and if you do not provide that reference it will use something (the ground in the T1, the coax shield, your body, etc). It is usually better to control what that 'something' is by using a counterpoise wire - just let it lay on the ground. 2a) the T1 tuner is of the L network type which may not work well into very high impedances. An end fed half wave presents a feed impedance of about 4000 ohms. A parallel tuned circuit with the unbalanced input created by either a link or a tap on the coil works best with these high impedances. Overall result: You may be better off using something different than the half wave. Try the W3EDP lengths for starters, an 85 foot radiator wire and a 17 foot counterpoise if the antenna is for 80 meters and up, or half those lengths for 40 and up. 73, Don W3FPR Jonathan wrote: The other thing OT: I have the T1. [Elecraft] K3 with Yaesu Quadra?
The K3 ACC connector appears to provide Band Data and PTT out signals suitable for driving/Controlling the Yaesu Quadra (VL-1000) amplifier. Is it possible to program one of the DIG signal lines (other than DIG0 which is used for FSK input) to work with the Quadra's F-SET output? F-SET is a relay contact that places the Yaesu transceiver in CW Keydown and a specific power level (e.g., 10 watts) for tuning the Quadra's antenna tuner. It would be very handy to be able to access a low power tune output for other uses - manual tuners, etc. - in addition automatic operation with the Quadra/VL-1000. 73, ... I'm waiting for mine to be delivered. I did BIN for the mast and a couple of other small things and asked for combined shipping. Got no response from the seller except for an e-bay invoice showing $31 in shipping charges (PA to VT). One box arrived yesterday with the small items. The mast I'm assuming will arrive today or tomorrow. So much for combining shipping to save me some money. So far, I'm not thrilled at all with the seller. Hi Dave One nice feature that i like in the K3 is the built in 2 tone generator. Maybe at some time in the future this feature could be expanded to incorporate a variable Audio tuning pulser feature with several selectable tones. A tuning pulser with a variable duty cycle would be nice. This feature combined with the low power tune option that you mentioned would be the best of both worlds. Re: [Elecraft] [XG-2] A little help with math
Ken, I believe those units are already dBm - nothing else makes sense, and there is a missing minus sign on the last one. +81.5 dBm would be a very large signal - 141.3 kilowatts into 50 ohms - minus 81.50 dBm does make sense. If you want a handy tool for dB calculations, you may want to download the mini dB calculator by DL5SWB.
