[Elecraft] K2 parts question
Hello to the group. This is my first post. I'm assembling a K2 serial number 6327. All is well and I'm working on section 3 of the RF board. I have a question about Q6. The parts list as a number of C2166 but mine is a C5739P. Is this a direct replacement or do I have the wrong part. This is the first problem I've encountered and this kit is the best by far I've ever built. (I go back to the '50s first kit was a Heatkit AT-1) Mike, W9QS Never miss a thing. [Elecraft] K2 Scan rate.
Please could somebody tell me if: 1) It is possible to slow down the scan rate of the K2 by a hardware modification which would not affect 'normal' tuning when using either VFO 'A' or 'B' and without having to reduce the width of the band being scanned? 2) Is there a S / S+N threshold below which scanning will not stop? If there is, can the threshold be changed by some hardware modification? Have a nasty feeling that this is all done by firmware. [Elecraft] KPA100 Temp/Fan
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, but from what I've read, I think I may have a problem with my KPA100. When operating CW the fan turns on high during every transmission and the heat sink gets hot to the touch. I'm a ragchewer so my transmissions do run to several minutes and, regardless of power setting, the fan will kick on high after several minutes of transmitting. Fan is set to 'nor'. Sending speed ranges from 15-20 wpm. Ambient temperature in the shack is around 74F. The fan has never kicked up to high when on SSB but I don't operate fone much, and generally don't talk for very long when I do. The K2/100 (recent build, sn 6194, KPA100 Version F1.10) operates well in all other respects. Does anyone have an idea what may be wrong? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I'm a ragchewer so my transmissions do run to several minutes and, regardless of power setting, the fan will kick on high after several minutes of transmitting. ... Does anyone have an idea what may be wrong? I think this is normal. I had the same experience and asked about it and in the end realized that's how it behaves. It's the primary reason I went back to the QRP cover. Fan is just too noisy and comes on too often. It also failed to turn off by itself after going back into RX mode -- it took a deliberate keying event to, apparently, force the firmware to re-evaluate the temp and disable the fan (which of course causes a transmission and confuses the op on the other end!). Where or not that part was normal I don't know, but it's the way mine behaved (on two different KPA100's). I don't know which firmware it had so don't know if that's been addressed in a newer version. If I remember correctly, the amp is most efficient at about 75 watts, so operating there might help cut down the heat and delay the fan turn-on. You might also look into other cooling methods -- larger, slower fan; remote fan with custom duct work; active cooling; etc. --Andrew, NV1B ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Temp/Fan
Jim, The fan does go on and off by sensing the temperature of the heat sink (Q3 is the sensing element). The temperature that the fan transition occurs is fixed, but will operate at that fixed temperature only if CAL TPA is set correctly. CAL TPA must be set to the actual temperature of the heat sink, and that is easily done by allowing the KPA100 to cool (an hour or more) to the ambient temperature and setting the parameter to match the ambient temperature (in degrees C). If you think the fan is coming on too soon, you might try running the fan at the Hi/Lo setting rather than normal - the fan is not very noisy at low speed. Another solution is to add a muffin fan on top of the heat sink to draw air away from it - the means of keeping the fan in place can vary - if the KPA100 is not tilted, it will likely just sit there unaided, but if tilted, some fastening device may be required. You can see Tom Hammond's implementation at www.n0ss.net. The speed of an external 12 volt DC fan (salvaged from a defunct PC) can be slowed by inserting a series resistor. 73, Don W3FPR Jim Stoneback wrote: I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, but from what I've read, I think I may have a problem with my KPA100. FW: [Elecraft] K3 firmware DSP2 N/A?
Available means that there is a corresponding file (hauxsomething) available in your firmware folder. I made some attempt in the Help section on the Firmware topic to describe what the columns (and DSP2) mean. I know nobody reads help (I rarely do), but I did make an attempt in the Help file to describe each page. The K3 Utility is used by Elecraft firmware development, production, and testers. That's good, because it gets pounded heavily by a demanding audience. Every K3 that leaves Aptos is pre-loaded with firmware using this utility. I have to enable certain utility features before the corresponding hardware is generally available so that the firmware developers can use the utility for their daily work. They have other ways of loading firmware, but have found some of the features of the K3 Utility a convenient timesaver. The command macros get a lot of use. We could have opted for different utility software for internal use versus customer use. But we thought it better to have one development path, and in some support cases it's convenient to have a fully capable utility installed. One product, with the same capability everywhere, satisfies that need. And there aren't very many of us doing this software development effort. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bill Tippett Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 3:39 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: AW: [Elecraft] K3 firmware DSP2 N/A? Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Temp/Fan
Jim, I run alot of CW contests and with constant CQing/exchanges you could fry an egg on the heatsink. The existing cooling cannot keep up with the heat generated. It looks a bit Frankenstein but I mounted (with double back tape) a 12 volt 2.5 muffin fan on top of the heat sink. It runs cool as a cucumber now. This is now standard operating procedure for contests I run at 100w. I have both 2 and 4 muffin fans mounted on rubber pipe caps and they don't slide, plus the soft rubber absorbs the sound of the fans a bit. The rubber pipe caps are sold to cap the end of pipes and are normally held on the pipe with a hose clamp. Not all shops will stock the caps, but a plumbing supply house will have them. Cut a suitable hole in the surface of the cap with scissors and mount the fan with screws, lockwashers and nuts, just as you would on a metal surface. 73! The 500 Hz restriction is temporary. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco K3 no. 7 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filters for the 2nd receiver?
If I understand what I think you are saying... The 2nd receiver is completely independent and doesn't use the filters (or anything else) in the primary receiver. Each receiver has its own dedicated roofing filters (up to five). You populate the filters in the 2nd receiver according to how you plan to use it (just as you do for the primary receiver). Like the primary receiver, the 2nd receiver will come equipped by default with the 2.7 kHz 5-pole roofing filter, and you can replace this filter with another and/or add additional filters. [Elecraft] Fixing partially deaf K2.
Greetings. A couple of years ago, while working a contest, I realized my K2 seemed a little deaf. I run the radio using its internal batteries. I was calling CQ and got no response. To save batteries on the K2, I turned it off and turned on my Grundig Satellite 800 shortwave located near by. Using the Grundig, I was surprised to hear a station calling me. Switch back to the K2 I found I couldn't hear the station I heard on the Grundig. The Grundig was using only a built-in whip antenna and the K2 was connected to a Superantennas MP-1 antenna located just a few feet away. I acquired this radio from the original builder 6 months after it was assembled. I may not have built this unit but I have spent a lot of time going through its guts and applying mods. I have applied all but the last two of the la3za listed mods to bring my K2 #2172 in line with the 3000+ K2's. The mods include the A/B kit update, and the PLL stability mod. I have downloaded updated versions of some of the pages I had printed out previously. Namely, the LA3ZA page with mod info for the K2, the Spectogram alignment procedure. I also downloaded the latest copy of the Rev. G manual (to compare against my Rev. C), and the one for the KSB2. I have temporarily removed the KSB2 from my unit until I feel the base unit is working as expected. I also have a printout of Gary's message fom 2000 titled K2: 25 reasons for low RX sensitivity or low audio. My sudden push to try and identify, and hopefully fix, problems with my K2 is due to my having temporary use of a 20MHz handheld oscilloscope. The scope is on loan from a client while I'm working on a project. I won't be able to hang on to the scope much longer. I've been going back over messages I kept when I was originally on this list back in 2002, plus some more recent messages. I find I am usually running the K2 with the pre-amp on. When listening to a station on the K2 I have the volume control set to around the 9 or 10 o'clock position so I don't feel there is a problem with the audio amp. My 8V regulator measures 8.45V on its output. I replaced R1 on the control board with a 5k8 resistor in series with a 20k multi-turn trim-pot. I have tried AGC voltages from about 3.6 up to 4.1 and still have a noticeable difference in noise level when turning the AGC on and off. I curently have the AGC voltage set to 4.1V. A message I had kept from 2002 said to check for between 2.2 and 2.4V on TP1 on 160. I went to 80m (my lowest band) and measured about 2.2V. I removed T5 from the board as I didn't like the spacing of the turns around it. I discovered two turns of the secondary were side by side. I removed the secondary, adjusted the spacing of the primary to be more even, and rewound the secondary (positioning it so its first turn was between turns 6 and 7 of the primary instead of between 7 and 8). After re-installing T5, I had 2.5V at TP1. After having altered T5 I went back and check the VCO control voltage at the left-side of R30 and read only 5.26V (at 4MHz). I adjusted L30 until I read 6V and verified all the other VCO control voltages are within range. The lowest reading is 1.99V and highest is 6V. The last time I adjusted the bandpass filters I used the updated information that says to use a max. transmit power of 1W. I haven't re-checked these filters but they should be ok. The simple N0SS signal tracing method on 40m didn't show much of a problem when I used myself as an antenna while holding on to one lead of a 22 nF cap. My main issues at the moment are: 1. What voltage should I be getting at TP1 when tuned to 80m? 2. What other things should I be checking in the AGC circuit that could account for hearing a change in signal between AGC on/off regardless of how I set the trim-pot adjustment? 3. Are there some key RF voltage readings I should take to verify all is well while I still have access to a scope? -- Cheers! Kevin. http://www.ve3syb.ca/ |What are we going to do today, Borg? RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 Temp/Fan
Have you calibrated the KPA100 temperature sensor and set the quiescent bias? The KPA100 has a self-protection circuit in it that reduces power and displays the message PA HOT if the heat sink temperature exceeds 85C (185F). I'm not sure it's possible to get the heat sink that hot in normal use, even the most long winded rag chews G. A few years ago I was part of a group testing the stability of the K2/100 over a wide range of operating temperatures. The test protocols included loading a message buffer with CW, then sending nonstop for between 30 and 60 minutes at 100 watts output. Under those conditions, in a shack with an ambient temperature of 24C (75F) the temperature of the cooling fins on the heat sink would approach 50C (122F). The K2 cooling fan was operating normally automatically switching to high above 37C (100F). No other cooling was provided. The tests were done dozens of times with no adverse effects on the rig. Eventually the heat sink temperature reaches equilibrium. The greater the difference between its temperature and the ambient air temperature, the faster it loses heat. When the loss of heat equals the heat being contributed by the amplifier circuits, the temperature no longer rises. The testing did not try to find this equilibrium. We were testing the effects on the heat on internal oscillators, not testing the KPA100 itself. My notes do indicate that the rise beyond 50C was very, very slow, however. That's why the tests stopped there. The rig was no longer heating appreciably. I mention the quiescent bias because the current the PA transistors are drawing key up also contributes heat. If it's high, that could lead to significant additional heating. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Jim, I run alot of CW contests and with constant CQing/exchanges you could fry an egg on the heatsink. Jay - KT5E Jim Stoneback wrote: I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, but from what I've read, I think I may have a problem with my KPA100. New K3 orders received after Dec. 10th are targeted March delivery. Alrighty then, if you were wanting to believe that what has been a 6 month wait up until now will turn into a 3 month wait for orders placed today - I guess this news is good for you! ;-) For someone that expected his May 11 order in August, November, and December - it means standby while we get the rest of the May 4 kits out, then we're gonna make some built units, then we'll get right back to you. My guess about 7 months of wait total. No whining, complaining, or unhappiness here - just the facts m'aam! Re: [Elecraft] Fixing partially deaf K2.
Kevin, May I suggest that you build the test oscillator shown in the Troubleshooting appendix of the K2 manual, and use that oscillator to perform the Receiver Signal Tracing steps. That should reveal the failing stage for you. Once you know which stage is failing, the final solution is usually quite easy. Right now, the problem can be anywhere between the antenna and the speaker. I can't tell much about your AGC threshold, but certainly 4.1 volts is too high - set it no higher than 3.8 volts. 73, Don W3FPR Kevin Cozens wrote: Greetings. [Elecraft] Re: k2-6321 alignment test Part II
RC, The PLL is just fine, but the VCO is not on the proper frequency - and that fact is why the voltage at R30 does not adjust - it is simply too far out of the expected frequency range. It sounds like C71 is not actually connected in the circuit. Check the soldering, particularly in the VFO Range Selection area. Look at the schematic (RF Board sheet 1) to identify the components connected to relays K13, K14 and K15. Be certain those relays and varactors are oriented correctly. 73, Don W3FPR Robert 'RC' Conley wrote: PLL Referance Oscillator Range test page 63 G Manual Hi freq=12098.28 Lo freq=12083.48 range=14.76 Range must be between 9.8 and 15Khz - VCO CAL FCTR Test TP1 should see reading between 8 and 10 MHZ actual reading is 18, 493.77 MHZ I think this is a little high VCO voltage does not adjust DMM flickers at 0.017 / 0.18 vdc ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filters for the 2nd receiver?
Mike, To transmit FM you will need the FM filter in the main receiver (it will also be used for transmit). I would suggest that you re-examine your filters in the main receiver. If you will not operate digital modes, you can likely do without the 200 Hz filter. If the 200 Hz filter must stay, then I would suggest you eliminate the 1000 Hz filter unless you are a CW contest type that likes to listen with a wide receiver - during normal operating, your 1.8 kHz filter in conjunction with the DSP filtering should work just fine. OTOH, if you do not operate a lot of sideband contests, the 1.8 kHz filte could go and the 1000 Hz can stay. These are only my suggestions, choose your filters to match your operating preferences. The DSP will handle reduced bandwidths just fine until an offending S-9 +30 signal appears within the roofing filter bandpass. That will likely only occur during contests or other times of intense operating activities. With the 2nd receiver, one could always put the in-between filter widths there and switch to receiving with the 2nd receiver when the additional filtering is needed. In other words, the FM filter, the 2.7kHz, the 1000 Hz, 400 Hz and 200 Hz in the main receiver and 2.7kHz, 1.8 kHz, 1000, and either 400 or 200 in the 2nd receiver - or something like those combinations, it is all up to you. 73, Don W3FPR Mike Fatchett W0MU wrote: I had the impression the 2nd receiver had no filters at all. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 : low power
Luc, Those RF voltages look normal until one reaches the Q5 collector. Changing R11 to 4.7 ohms (as in the power mod) will likely help, and you can increase R30 to 33 ohms (the remainder of the power mod) if changing R11 does not help enough. I am concerned because you indicated only 0.2 watts output on 20 meters - with 10.7 volts on the collector of Q6 you should have more output than 0.2 watts unless you also have a problem in the low pass filter area - check the number of turns on the toroids and check the values of C46, C47 and C54. Too many toroid turns can reduce the cutoff frequency of the 20 meter lowpass filter down into the 20 meter band and absorb a lot of the signal. When counting toroid turns, count each pass of the wire through the center of the core as 1 turn. 73, Don W3FPR luc Favre wrote: Don, Thanks for your quick reply. Mike On 12/12/07 4:26 PM, Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mike, To transmit FM you will need the FM filter in the main receiver (it will also be used for transmit). I had intended to put in a 2.7k 1000 and 400 filters in the 2nd receiver. I also wanted to be able to operate FM and was going to put the FM filter in the 2nd receiver. Will this work? The main receiver was going to have the 200, 400, 1000, 1.8 and 2.7 filters. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. This was a heck of a lot easier than taking an FT1000D down to Aruba! I took my K3 to Grenada for CQWW as carry on in a Zero-Halliburton case that I had picked up several years ago at a hamfest. It held the radio, a switching power supply, cables and more. It fit in the overhead compartment, as well as under the seat when necessary. The case is 14 1/2 x 16 1/2 x 9 outside dimensions. Coincidentally, I have another much smaller Z-H case for my KX1. But I found that the KX1 was so small that it was better off just bubble wrapped in regular suitcase or carryon camera case when I travelled overseas with it. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] [KX1] Waterproof Carry Case
I was at Walmart last night and browsing around, thinking of alternate (ham radio) uses for normal household items. I was wandering down the housewares/kitchen aisles and I came across the Tupperware and related containers. Actually, I was specifically looking for something to use as a project box for housing a matching network for an inverted-L, and I purchased a pretty cool item for that, similar to as described below, but a different size. I am not sure that these are UV resistant, but for the price that is okay. Thinking a bit more about it last night and today I figured that they also had another size that would be perfect for storing transporting/hiking with a KX1 (or other small portable rig, but obviously of interest to KX1 users on this list). So I stopped again tonight and picked up the one I had in mind for the KX1. With a bit of foam rubber as cushioning around it this should be perfect, well, maybe just slightly larger than ideal, but pretty close! Actually, it would have room for extra batteries, pencil, log, paddles, wire for antenna, etc. It is a 6.8 cup (8 x 5-1/2 x 2-1/4) clear plastic with a lid that locks down on all four sides and has a silicone gasket that provides for an airtight/watertight seal. The brand name is Lock Lock (www.LockAndLockUSA.com although I didn't see the exact model on their website) and for that size it was less than $3 (I thought it was about $5.50 but I just looked at the receipt and it was less than $3). They sure are right that it is a Multi-Use Storage Container, with some suggestions such as Tools Art Supplies, School Supplies, First Aid Items, Pet Supplies, Food, Dry Goods, etc. However, the most applicable for KX1 (et al) uses as described are Sporting, Fishing Camping or maybe Picnics at the Park, those activities sound close enough to hiking on the Appalachian Trail or wherever your favorite hiking location is. It is claimed to be Microwave Safe, so presumably it is safe for HF as well. It has a Manufacturer's Lifetime Warranty. As a Polar Bear I especially noted that it was Freezer Safe as well! The plastic is fairly thick, quite sturdy, much better than Tupperware or other similar containers. Just another alternative to the Pelican Cases. If somebody else has mentioned this item on the list in the past, sorry I missed it, but I wanted to make sure others knew about this. Get them while you can! 73, Mark, NK8Q ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K1-4 -- No 30m band during initial tests
Hello all, I'm now a bit further along with my K1-4 build, and I just installed the VFO toroid (L1) on the RF board, fired the radio up and adjusted the winds to match the desired range. Shortly after that I was switching through the four bands as instructed, and I noticed that my radio is showing the following four bands: 40m, 20m, 17m, 15m ... **no 30m, and both 17 and 15!** (specifically, it displayed 7 MHz, 14 MHz, 18 MHz, 21 MHz). The first thing I did was re-check the crystals on my filter board very carefully with the K1-4 filter board manual. All are correct, in their correct respective spots, grounded, and I made the right crystal selection for 80kHz tuning. I then checked resistance again across the IC (U1). Everything looked good, though a couple of values were just barely higher than their recommended range: UI pin 8, UI pin 9 == 450 ohms (should be 360 -- 440 ohms) UI pin 9, UI pin 18 == 455 ohms (should be 360 -- 440 ohms) 1) Has anyone else experienced this problem of a missing 30m band while having both 17 and 15m present? 2) Does any of the above described info on my filter board sound suspect, or is there something else I should check? Thanks for your help, and 73, Mark (KB3OKS) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. During a second subsequent tune (same ant and same settings ) the rig initiated a tune cycle and immediately shut down. No overpower/high current indication. I turned the rig on again, and everything was the same as before. I suspect maybe the tune was marginal and that at that SWR the rig is between a 'continue or shutdown' logic process. No residual effects were noted. Al WA6VNN K3 #31 Of course it had everything to do with it - but an experiment is an experiment - I like to see what a well designed radio can really do. I hope the info was helpful in answering the question about SWR and rollback. Yes it does roll back, and very gracefully I'd say. AW: [Elecraft] K3 with xv-432
no, not until now Hi Klaus- Did you ever get an answer from ELecraft? or someone? Thanks... Bruce, NM5B Santa Fe, NM - Original Message - From: Koppendorfer Klaus [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 6:35 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 with xv-432 i just realized that the xv-432 has an IF from 28 to 32 MHz I have one xv on order - for use at satellite freq. 435-436 so IF therefore is 30 to 32 MHz on my K3 I see there is no way to tune K3 up to 32 MHz I asked Elecraft for a solution, but got no answer until now, oe6kyg klaus ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filters for the 2nd receiver?
My solution was to order just one $79 500 Hz CW filter for now. When the variable-bandwidth CW filter becomes available I will install it in the main receiver and move the 500-Hz filter to the second receiver (when it becomes available). So the main receiver lineup will be: - 0.4-0.8 variable CW - 1.5-2.2 variable SSB - 2.7 SSB (stock) - 6.0 AM - 15 FM Second receiver: - 0.5 CW - 2.7 SSB (stock) Seems like the most bang for the buck. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Scan rate.
Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: 1) It is possible to slow down the scan rate of the K2 by a hardware modification which would not affect 'normal' tuning when using either VFO 'A' or 'B' and without having to reduce the width of the band being scanned? From the looks of the circuit diagram, that has to be done entirely in firmware, based on the 4MHz crystal. 2) Is there a S / S+N threshold below which scanning will not stop? If there is, can the threshold be changed by some hardware modification? I reckon that this has to be based on VSMTR, so one could change the threshold, but at the cost of upsetting the S meter. I would expect the threshold to either be based on the computed S meter reading, or based on some sort of estimate of the actual background noise.
