I have only ever used one serial port and have used a PTT and CAT control
using the same port. With MixW I use the CAT command for TX/RX keying and
the DTR line for Morse keying. But because the key jack doubles as PTT on
the K2, DTR works for conventional PTT as well for software that doesn't
support CAT keying.

But to return to the original question, the KIO2 is certainly not essential
for PSK use.

The default Tx Audio passband is 250 Hz to 3150 Hz. Its adjustment is

Some brands of solder wick come was pre-filled with flux and have a

I solder at 800F with a Weller temp-controlled iron and have a
little

tub of Kesler 44 rosin flux on the bench. When reheating a joint I
take an Exacto knife with the number 11 blade(the pointed
triangular one

that is also good for removing splinters, self-mutilation, etc.) and
just dip the point about 1 or 2 mm into the goo...about as much as a
pile and a half of fly poop...if you are familiar with that... and
apply

it to the soldering point before heating.

An excellent method...In the absence of rosin flux, remember that
fresh solder contains flux...Reheat the reluctant joint with a
clean, hot iron then just TOUCH the tip-joint juncture with fresh
solder and the joint will quickly liquify, allowing whatever
rework is necessary, be it the removal of excess solder or
eliminating a cold joint...

Having better means at my disposal, I seldom use solder wick, but
I find that it works best if you lay the wick down over the joint,
place the clean, hot iron on top of that, and then add a dab of
fresh solder...Wait a second or two for things to flow and the
wick will usually suck up all the excess...

You can also offset the center frequency of the 2.7 and 2.8 kHz filters

the 8 band TX EQ boost/cut of +/- 16 dB you have a lot of flexibility.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 update problem

2008-01-23 Thread Brian

Hi, Stan!

You bet! I have a laptop with Vista Home Basic and the K3 Utility
program works great.

Remember, a key to the success of updating the K3 is how it is connected
to the computer. If you use an RS232 - USB adapter (ours or anyone
else's) always make sure they have the correct drivers (see the K3
Utility Help file for details).

Also, if you use a USB hub, it should be externally powered with a
wall wort. Hubs that use the host pc for power are usually
underpowered and can cause download failures.

Let us know how well the update process works for you!

RE: [Elecraft] Broadcast Band

2008-01-23 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Ideally you would want the KBPF3 option that provides efficient front-end
filters for out-of-ham-band listening.

Wayne commented that the K3 can be used for general coverage without the
KBPF3, but its sensitivity isn't as good since the correct front-end filters
aren't available. I haven't tried it without the KBPF3 so I can't suggest
how much worse it would be without the right filters.

For AM reception, including BC band reception, the basic SSB filters are
fine, especially for voice programming like a ball game. The K3, with its 1
Hz tuning resolution, tuning accuracy and stability, will receive an AM
station perfectly, even with music programming, by simplifying dialing it in
as a SSB signal.

A 6 KHz roofing filter will give you greater fidelity for listening to music
IF you receive it in SSB mode! In AM mode the audio bandpass is limited to 3
KHz, just like receiving SSB with a 2.7 kHz roofing filter (remember, an AM
signal has two sidebands, so the audio bandwidth is 1/2 the roofing filter
bandwidth when receiving in AM mode). In SSB mode you listen to only ONE
sideband of the AM signal, so you have the full 6 kHz filter bandwidth for
the best audio. I'm listening to some big band stuff from an AM station on
mine right now G

You won't often need the full 6 KHz bandwidth to listen to AM sigs in SSB
mode unless you have a very critical 'ear'. Most conventional AM radios
today, especially car radios, roll off the audio bandpass at about 3 kHz,
just like the K3 using the 6 kHz roofing filter in AM mode. They do that to
reduce noise on marginal signals. Consumers have expressed a strong
preference for a narrower audio bandwidth and less noise on weak signals.

Where the 6 KHz filter become critical is if you want to TRANSMIT in AM mode
with the K3.

Ron AC7AC

I've seen a few pictures of this module but nothing up close enough yet to
100% see it but it looks like there are some resistors that are sorts flying
around on the board. They almost look like they are reworked on. Is this
common in these rigs? It seems like something like that may have been done
to help may layout more possible but would result in a manufacturability
compromise.

Just wondering if someone who's seen it better than this internet warrior
had any thoughts/comments on it. Before anyone gets angry I'm only asking
for my own edification and to learn something about the rig not to question
it in any way shape or form.

My favorite thing about Elecraft is that I learn something about my trade
every time I come here and build one. I can't say I've ever bought a
YaeComWood and learned something other than just how to operate it.
Learning from all of you has made me a better engineer at work and has me
feeling a lot more comfortable with some analog circuits. (My degrees are
in Computer Hardware Engineering and Computer Software Engineering) but my
ham radio background has me working as an EE. Most of what I do is micro

These are part of the PA feedback network that stabilizes PA gain over

installed during regular manufacturing of the KPA3 board.

Ordered with deposit on May 11th. K3/100 Kit, S/N 269 left

[Elecraft] Weller WD-1001

2008-01-23 Thread Ken, KA0W

Hello!

Wondering if any of the builders here are familiar with the Weller WD-1001
station?
(
http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brands/CF_Files/model_detail.cfm?upc=037103208095 )

Hard to find user reviews on this station. All I seen it do is heat to temp
in less than 20 seconds and has other nice (very much needed) features like
programmable shut off for those who get sidetracked so easy like myself. My
WTCPT does just fine, but looking for a little more for the next few years
of use.

Anyone here using one of these for many hours of building?

I blame Elecraft and K3 seekers for my idle time while waiting for my box of
backordered K2/100 parts to arrive. One starts thinking of foolish things
like solder tool replacements - HI!.

Have fun thank you for any info,

Ken, KA0W

You're correct, the tone is on 21072 kHz.

I've been testing the rcvr at night, which, duh, obviously will produce
weak signals on 15M. Today I compared the K1 rcvr to a general coverage
rcvr on 21 MHz and both rcvrs gave the approximate same signal
strengths. So, no problems.

Thanks for your help.

You won't often need the full 6 KHz bandwidth to listen to AM sigs in SSB

reduce noise on marginal signals. Consumers have expressed a strong
preference for a narrower audio bandwidth and less noise on weak signals.

Where the 6 KHz filter become critical is if you want to TRANSMIT in AM mode
with the K3.

For AM MW/SW BC reception only, is there any reason to choose a 6 kHz

[Elecraft] a cure for the blues?

2008-01-23 Thread Chris Wagner
Quote: It is just as valid an issue for those waiting for a K3 as
technical questions are for those who
are lucky enough to already have one. (OM julian, G4ILO on the 23rd).

OM Julian, you got your K3 10 days ago. I should hope that I'll keep
wanting to use my K3 every free minute when it arrives. Instant
gratification won't increase the pleasure. But since so many are
feeling frustrated, maybe they can try doing somehting they enjoy?
Like getting on the air or taking a holiday some place where it's
warm? (I'm planning a motorcycle trip to the mountains in the North of
Thailand with a portable mast. And when I'm getting wet, it helps to
motivate oneself somehow).

Brain research tells us to keep trying new things. Like using the
other hand for standard tasks. Surely, there will be something to cure
the frustration? Today, I will try a $ 4.75 foot massage. Getting on
the air will be even better, so let's have fun! 73, Chris Hs0zfe /

[Elecraft] Thursday night - special NAQCC 160M Sprint

2008-01-23 Thread Larry Makoski
We are offering a second edition of our special 160M sprint which is now
going to be an annual event a day or two before the January CQWW 160M
Contest. We were pleased with the response (22 logs showing 51 different
participants) to our initial offering last year and feel it is something
our members really like. It is also an opportunity to do some final 160M
testing before the CQ Contest. Some members don't believe QRP and simple
wire antennas work well on 160M. This also provides a chance for them to
prove themselves wrong. QRP does work well on 160M just as on any other
band, even with simple small wire antennas.

RULES specific to this sprint:

Date and time:
Friday, January 25, 2007 from 0130-0330Z which is Thursday evening here
in the USA

Bands Used This Sprint:
160 meters only (1810 kHz +/- 3kHz)

Entry Deadline:
All entries must be postmarked or email dated before 2400Z on Jan 31, 2008.

The K3 unpacking party was attended by W4EFZ and KC4RI. First QSO:out of
the box was with I2VRN (Bob) on 40 Meter SSB, xband (7097x7184) with
signals QSA 5 each way. I2VRN was rx 59+20 in SC. My sig was 57 near
Milano. Power out was 10 (ten) watts and antenna used was dipole at 30
feet.

Ordered May 14 2007 by telephone. The K3 is worth every second of the
wait endured. Very, very, very, impressed thus far.

Detailed report on K3 to be issued in few days.,,, maybe...weeks?

NOW; listen up; Email disabled, Landline disconnected. Cell OFF. Do not
disturb. Having too much fun.

I agree that this is one source, and one point of entry for this

Why do you say that. On my K2, the amplitude depends, in the expected
way, on the settings of those two relays, indicating an earlier
injection point. Note that the microcontroller to which they are
adjacent is shut down during receive, so one should not be picking up
anything from it's oscillator. (The relays are the attenuator and
pre-amp bypass ones.)
