Re: [Elecraft] K3 in different colors?

I'm ready to buy a set of K3 panels in the K1/K2 gray ...

Perhaps Aptos could produce a few K2 color-schemed cases
w/front panels ...

It's surprising to see the different color tastes reflected in the
fabric and thread colors chosen by Rose's case orders.

As it is currently constructed, the K3 in finished in a variety of
different textures. Black is a good color for minimizing those
differences; other colors might not manage the task as well.

Keith,

I like this idea. My wife just purchased a Ruby Red Dell Laptop. (Her name is

to offer? How many chassis to stock? Thinks like that.

The only company doing this is the German CompanyHilberling...which has

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

2008-02-26 Thread Joseph M. Durnal
When it comes to reviews, I tend to focus on the bad ones as the good
ones could simply represent someones feeling that they spent plenty of
money on something, it must be good. When it comes to ham gear, a bad
review without a call sign doesn't get much weight. I suppose the
reviewer in this case could have made up for it by giving the serial
number of his K3, but that wasn't included either. I don't think it
is a true review. Of course, my K3 has been ordered, my review will
follow after I feel I know the radio, it could be a few weeks, or it
could be a few months, I won't know until I know.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 RF board test

Jack,

Believe the DMM and refrain from using the analog ohmmeter because it
apparently uses a high enough voltage for resistance measurements that
it can turn on solid state devices and may even damage them.

All values test correct but one.

The right end of R115 is meant to be >500 ohms to earth.
With an analogue meter it gives 2 ohms.
With a DMM on auto range it flashes between ranges wildly. But on
manual range it gives 10.2 Kohms.

Anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 eHam Reviews

2008-02-26 Thread Curt
"Maybe we should convince Elecraft to employ scantily clad buxom women in
ads that talk about the exciting new case colors, the many knobs and lights
and the like"

I like and buy Elecraft's products now, but this type advertising would
prompt me to buy much more, maybe 2 or 3 K3s no matter what any of the
reviews say, am easily impressed by scantily clad buxom women, especially if
they DON'T talk.

Seriously, content of most reviews of any product is just the reviewer's
opinion. Even the reporting of ARRL laboratory tests is sometimes slanted
by the words the review uses to report the results. And, most proud owners
find the "objective" test results largely irrelevant. And woe to the
person who questions the mystical capabilities of their pride and joy.

Jack,

If you do not get a reply which solves your problem please let me know. I
cannot get to see the schematic until later today, but it looks as though
there might be a semiconductor connected to the right end of R115 which
conducts when you use your analogue meter. You could try swapping the
leads of the analogue meter to see if it then reads a greater resistance
than 2 ohms, hopefully > 500 ohms. If it does then the analogue meter is
causing the problem because any analogue meter measuring resistance can
cause a semiconductor to conduct, DMMs should not.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise Reduction Recording

2008-02-26 Thread David Woolley

Trevor Smithers wrote:

What you really need is a method of identifying the actual ssb speech waveform, extracting the noise

More or less by definition, if you have mix of an unknown signal and
noise, you cannot separate the two. That's because noise is random and
therefore unpredictable and the signal is unknown, so also unpredictable.

To remove some of the noise, you must make assumptions about the signal.
For speech, that probably means assuming that only discrete formant
frequencies are present (but that isn't valid for unvoiced sounds and
particularly for s and h sounds - the loss of these may be why people
find noise reduced signals to be muddy), identify those frequencies, and
then attenuate all the other frequencies.

If the signal is close to the noise, you will not be able to identify
the important frequencies properly, and therefore not be able reduce the
noise this way.

More drastically, you can try and construct a set of voice tract model
parameters, and then synthesize the speech from those (this is what GSM
does, but for bandwidth reduction rather than noise reduction, so it
assumes a reasonable starting SNR).

Most drastically, you use speech recognition and have the noise reducer
re-speak the words. Currently the best tool for doing speech
recognition in the presence of noise is the human brain, though, so the
best way of getting noise reduction is to get someone else to listen to
the signal and repeat it to you!

Generally, noise reduction has to be more of an operator comfort thing
than really improving the signal. If the noise is so strong that you
cannot make out the speech, the noise reduction isn't going to be able
to find it anyway.
