Re: [Elecraft] Replacing the Lead acid shell inside K2 with Li-Po cells

I thought about this and even bought a 3 cell battery and balanced charger -
then I realised the dangers of LiPo and decided against it in favour of 10
2.5AH NiMH cells in a 5 over 5 holder. This fits in fine in place of the
lead acid, is a lot lighter and can be charged quite easily with minor
modifications to the K2 battery system.

I am interested in the results though as I still have the LiPo and balanced
charger.

Re: [Elecraft] Help on Configuration

2009-09-30 Thread ab2tc

Hi,

If you have the FM filter you do not need the AM filter for listening to AM
broadcasts with envelope detection. The FM filter is plenty good enough as
the DSP allows you to set any bandwidth you please up to about 4.2kHz audio
bandwidth (or thereabouts). This is wider than the 6kHz AM filter would
allow and is really nice on strong, interference free signals. I am really
looking forward to the arrival of the SAM detector though. I also use SSB
mode when conditions are difficult as with strong selective fading. I do not
have the AM filter as I have no desire to transmit AM.

Re: [Elecraft] Replacing the Lead acid shell inside K2 with Li-Po cells

2009-09-30 Thread Ignacy

I think that dangers of protected Li-Ion batteries are way overblown. After
all, millions of laptops with those batteries fly every day with no problem.

The charging problems are overblown as well. What happens if the battery
life is 100 charges and not 500 when you need to charge every two weeks. By
the time the battery is weak it is obsolete.

I have 2 x 3 pack of computer Li-ion cells (with built-in protection) in my
K2 for 5 years. Charged via a 12.6V 1A regulator with a laptop PS. Light
and zero problems. It seems that charging each cell 4.2V (or 12.6V for 3
cells) with some current restriction is a good enough technique for
longevity.

[Elecraft] K3 RF gain cal questions

2009-09-30 Thread Chuck Guenther
I have performed the RF gain calibration (and also re-calibrated
the s-meter) on my K3 using the Elecraft XG-2 generator hooked
up to the receive antenna input of the KXV3 module. I used this input
for two reasons: One reason is there is no chance of RF coming out
of this input. Secondly, I have a KD9SV receive antenna switch box
(Dxpedition model, with preamps for 80/160m) which allows me to
have the XG-2 conveniently available at all times, simply by leaving it
hooked up to one of the receive antenna jacks. Of course, I left the
KD9SV preamps off for these procedures.

First question:
Is there any problem using the Rx input jack for the
RF gain cal, instead of the ANT1 input as directed by the latest
version of the K3 utility ?

Second question:
Suppose that I do an RF gain cal, then change the filter
gain (in the Crystal filter configuration part of the K3 utility) of the
roofing filter I used during the gain cal? Should I repeat the RF gain cal?

Third question:
What exactly is calibrated during an RF gain cal?
I understand in a general sense that the overall RF/IF system gain is
determined by many things, including scaling constants in the DSP.

Thanks 73,

Chuck Guenther NI0C

[Elecraft] FS: DB6NT TR144H 2m transverter for K3

2009-09-30 Thread Julian, G4ILO

I have for sale a DB6NT 2m transverter, complete with all cables ready to
plug in to a K3 with KXV3 and go. This is the Rolls-Royce of the transverter
world, 0.9dB NF receiver suitable for EME work without a preamp, 20dBm IP3.
A very clean 25W output from a conservatively rated and generously
heat-sinked PA, suitable to drive a linear amplifier to the legal limit. New
models list for EUR 1,380 today. Selling for GBP 700 + shipping within
Europe only. Would accept Elecraft KX144 (internal K3 transverter module) in
part exchange, if you have already ordered one but think that this would
better meet your needs.

For more info and picture:
http://www.g4ilo.com/2009/09/db6nt-tr144h-transverter-for-sale.html . (Note:
it isn't obvious from the photo but it is about the same size and weight as
a fully-loaded K3.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF gain cal questions

2009-09-30 Thread Wayne Burdick
Chuck Guenther wrote:

Is there any problem using the Rx input jack for the RF gain cal

No. Works equally well.

Suppose that I do an RF gain cal, then change the filter
gain (in the Crystal filter configuration part of the K3 utility) of
 the
roofing filter I used during the gain cal? Should I repeat the RF
 gain cal?

Yes, if you want it to be as accurate as possible. But typical per-
filter gain settings are in the low dB range (or should be), so a
small change won't noticeably affect S-meter accuracy.

What exactly is calibrated during an RF gain cal?

The K3 uses a low-noise JFET IF amp. Gain control of this stage --
what we refer to as hardware AGC -- is achieved in two ways: by
varying the current through the preceding PIN-diode attenuator, and by
varying the JFET source voltage (its gate is at ground, so this varies
the transconductance). A very wide range of IF gain control is
achieved in this manner. But the gain curve varies a bit from one
radio the next, because JFET pinch-off voltage varies (the voltage
differential between gate and source at which drain-source current
ceases to flow).

The RF gain calibration procedure injects a DC voltage at the hardware
AGC control node, sweeping it slowly over a 0 to 3 V range using a D-
to-A converter. The DSP measures the resulting signal level (from your
XG2), building a table of control voltages vs. 1 dB attenuation steps.
This table can later be used by the DSP to determine the strength of
incoming signals that activate hardware AGC; it simply monitors the
AGC detector voltage at the control node.

S-meter readings are a composite of the detector-voltage-to-dB table
value and the DSP's internal representation of signals below the
hardware AGC activation level (also in dB), so the S-meter is now
calibrated. The RF GAIN pot, when rotated counterclockwise, simply
adds a DC voltage at the control node (via the DAC mentioned above),
so it is now calibrated as well, given that the DSP knows exactly what
voltage to inject to achieve the desired attenuation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Split

2009-09-30 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I have my K3 linked to my computer and the DX Cluster, and I have
also noticed that if I am on, say 7005kHz in split mode, and a 'spot'
appears on the Cluster on, say 7009kHz, if I click on the spot to
send the K3 to that frequerncy, then once again it drops out of split
mode and reverts to normal mode.

That is a function of your logging program. If the logging program
commands both VFO A and VFO B it will be correct. The logger must
be turning off split as simply sending a set VFO A and set MODE
commands will not take the K3 out of split unless the new frequency
is on a different band (the K3 will not do split across bands).

Re: [Elecraft] K3: proposed SSB coarse tuning rate change

Hi Wayne,

Wayne Burdick schrieb am 29 Sep 2009 um 10:29:

We've had many requests to provide an 0.5-kHz VFO tuning step size in SSB
modes. I'd like to substitute this for the current 2.5 kHz selection. The
new set of steps sizes for SSB would then be:

0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0

Most operators probably don't find 2.5 kHz steps to be particularly
useful. 0.5 kHz, on the other hand, seems to be a useful lowest-common-
denominator for tuning the SSB band segments.

Each mode can have up to 4 step sizes with the K3's present per-mode data
structure. I could add more step sizes, but that would require a much more
 extensive change.

Please let me know if you have a compelling requirement for 2.5 kHz
 steps.

I dont really care if the last step is 2.5 or 5 kHz. I think 5 is better for a
fast move (QSY). My
wish is that I can choose 0.5 kHz for the fast tuning rate with the clarifier
knob. Most stations
are sitting either at .0 or .5, and it is nice to check the band with the RIT
knob and fine tune with
the main VFO (which is rarely necessary in fact) This is what I use very often.
YMMV.

Speakers for ham radio should cut off at about 100Hz.. Leave the
HiFi, for music. Music that is from a high quality source.
I am sure there are many good choices out there. The one I use
fits the size of my K3. It is Vertex mobile speaker, made by Yeasu. It
has ahold sound and it is very well made. Also it looks good with K3.

[Elecraft] Speakers and more

2009-09-30 Thread Bill
Lots of good posts regarding speakers. I suspect many others have the
problem I was faced with: too many speakers.

2 for the K3, one for my K2, 2 for the PC, 2 for a small AM/FM set, 2
for my VHF/UHF FM rig.

I picked up a Behringer RX1602 (~$130 today), 8 stereo inputs, each with
an on/off button, balance, gain, and clipping indicator. Two outputs:
one for the speaker pair of your choice and a headphone output with
level control on the front panel.

I built up a set of isolators for each input pair just to be safe and
have no RF issues at legal limit into a variety of antennas.

Now have the mixer and one pair of speakers - much less clutter.

[Elecraft] Tuning Rate Change

2009-09-30 Thread Jonathan Fox
I have to agree with the need for the radio to be smarter about changing it's
tuning rate automatically.  This is a software change that would be helpful to
most of us and is great on the Icoms.

I really like the way some radios speed up the
tuning rate as you turn the dial faster. I think this is almost the only thing
Icom do
better.

them on my K3 on both CW and SSB in AFX mode.

Hi Dan,

I recommend a pair of Best Buy Insignia, 4-inch, 3-way surround
speakers (same as the KLH Model 970A or other similar models). These
are unpowered bookcase speakers, but provide plenty of volume when
used with the K3. They're very inexpensive and sound great. Size:
about 4W x 8H x 4D.

Having two speakers allows you to get L/R separation of the main and
subreceivers, as well as take advantage of the K3's AFX simulated
stereo mode.

These look really good and you can't beat the price. No we just need
stereo amplifier so we can drive them from the line level output.

I guess I'm the odd man out on this preference. I used an ICOM 735 for 20
years so I'm used to it, but I never really liked it ... never knew where
I'd end up when I gave the knob a spin. Constant rate works great for me,
especially with the coarse option and fast tuning with the RIT knob.

[Elecraft] speakers

2009-09-30 Thread Ken Kopp
I use a pair of these on my K3, but they're actually KLH Audio Systems
Model 403A. The carton says they're weatherized and suitable for use
in your boat, patio, workshop, etc The company's website rates them
at 4 - 6 ohms, 40 watts.

The company address is 11131 Dora Street, Sun Valley, CA 91352.
