Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise
Don, I notice that if I have the RF gain less than full CW the S Meter bars are progressively lit and it looks like the noise level has increased when it has not. The latest beta is a work of art and should make folks happy but the S Meter / RF gain interaction puzzles me. Out of habit I do not run RF gain full out, but for a more accurate meter I guess I will. Can you explain the interaction? Dan AB3EN Don Rasmussen wrote: Here's my look for what its worth. ;-) I have been following AGC, S-meter, and threshold/slope values since the beginning - K2 #272 over two years ago. Until recently, I have found that K3 sensitivity varied between serial numbers and that could not be changed. I suspect this value was not measured before units left the factory. I had about 10db difference between K3 #272 and #2308. The s-meter presentation was tied to that difference. A hotter receiver would have a higher resting value on a given band that the more moderate receiver. Happily, in the newest limited beta release this has been addressed. The RF Gain can be calibrated to the user's satisfaction. It works great. For example - tonight on 40m I see the same resting band noise that I'd see on IC756p, or OMNI VI+. It is S3. In the past, the K3 always showed at least 2 points higher, sometimes 3, assuming identical sensitivity with my other sets. So, in the past my K3 would be showing S6 as resting. That was troublesome because I could not see how strong anyone was, if it were less than S6. At my location the single biggest plus with my K3's was getting the updated DSP board. That took all the critical adjustment out of THRESHOLD and SLOPE in CONFIG and made the default values good everywhere for me. The next major upgrade was this latest firmware and DSP that the guys have been working on. It allows RF Gain calibration. Very nice indeed. I did write custom s-meter code so that when the first bar on the K3 is solid and the next one is flickering, I can actually see on my remote meter the precision of the value as it is swinging up from S1 and down from S2. For the most part I find flickering bars to be useless. ;-) Cheers, Don [Elecraft] [K3] RE: K3 S-Meter and Noise Don Wilhelm w3fpr at embarqmail.com Sun Oct 4 19:43:06 EDT 2009 Previous message: [Elecraft] [K3] RE: K3 S-Meter and Noise Next message: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 S-Meter and Noise Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] Jim, There are 2 reasons I can think of to make that condition 'normal'. First is if you have the preamp on for a band where it is not needed - that would amplify the atmospheric noise when the receiver has no signal present and no AGC is active. If your preamp is on, try tuning it off and see if it makes a difference. A good test for whether the preamp is needed or not is to disconnect the antenna and reconnect it. If the noise level increases when you connect the antenna, there is more than enough gain in the receiver - turn off the preamp and try the same thing again - if the noise level still increases when the antenna is connected, try again but use the attenuator this time. If you can just barely hear the band noise, that is the proper gain setting for that band at that time and your antennas. The noise level on a particular band will vary, perhaps even on an hourly basis (i.e. 80 meters is noisy during the day, but will quiet down some at night). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - Dan AB3EN -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-S-Meter-and-Noise-tp3766928p3768183.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise
Dan, That behavior is common for many receivers - the K2 and K3 included. Admittedly, a few do it differently and the RF Gain will reduce the S-meter reading rather than sliding the scale upward. The reason is that the RF Gain works in 'parallel' with the AGC. In other words, the developed AGC voltage and the RF Gain voltage is applied to the same circuits, and the way the S-meter is implemented, there is no way to distinguish between them. Each operator must make a decision - if the S-meter reading is the most important consideration, the RF Gain must be set at the full CW position, but if maximum receiver dynamic range is more important, the RF gain will be reduced and the S-meter reading will be a relative reading rather than an accurate scale. The difference between (say) S-5 and S-7 will still be 2 bars, but they will appear at the S-7 and S-9 marks instead of the S-5 and S-7. If you are doing weak signal work or working on a crowded band, I suggest you opt for the maximum dynamic range by reducing the RF Gain (and advance the AF Gain) so you can just barely hear the band noise. But if your current operation is more casual, run the RF Gain at max and you will have valid S-meter readings. 73, Don W3FPR AB3EN wrote: Don, I notice that if I have the RF gain less than full CW the S Meter bars are progressively lit and it looks like the noise level has increased when it has not. I recommend backing off RF Gain until your S-meter is right at the point where noise is flickering the display. For example if noise is S3-S4, back off RF Gain so that the S-meter reads a constant S4. Then AGC will not be trying to function on weaker signals so you will be maximizing dynamic range above the noise threshold. Of course this also assumes you're already using the least gain that will give you band noise (i.e. ATTenuator, OFF and PREamplifier preferred in that order) when an antenna is connected. This is the way it was done it in the pre-DSP analog radio era. Elecraft makes it very easy to set the proper RF Gain setting in a DSP rig by backing off the S-meter when reducing gain. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-S-Meter-and-Noise-tp3766928p3768588.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for October 4th 5th, 2009
Good Morning, After losing this once I am now ready to send it. The report landed in \dev\null for some reason and is now floating in bit heaven. Oh the wonders of modern electronics! Luckily I had finished updating the database so the lists were easy to replicate from the log sheets and from the files. Redundancy is a good thing. Both nets went well, I had great propagation into the east on 20 and with Kent's help was able to work into Virginia on 40 meters. Thanks to Tom, Kent, and to Dale (K6PJV) for net control help and relays. Surprisingly, 40 meters had little QRN. I did not go for my normal walk afterward to recover my hearing. Twenty meters seemed pretty long because Tom was calling CQ and I was hearing the responses to him but he was not. So, after he closed, I got Ken and Nick easily. When Kent moved a new QNI off frequency I got back to work and bagged a few more in mini-pileups. All in all it was a fun and productive afternoon's effort. On to the lists = On 14050.5 kHz at 2300z: W6ZH - Pete - CA - K2 - 5138 N0SS - Tom - MO - K3 - 008 WB3AAL - Ron - PA - K2 - 1392 NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820 W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767 * QNI # 105 * AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398 WB5BKL - Nick - TX - K3 - 231 W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139 N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866 WC7S - Dale - WY - K2 - 4360 K2HYD - Ray - NC - KX1 - 608 On 7045 kHz at 0100z: W6ZH - Pete - CA - K2 - 5138 K9ZTV - Kent - MO - K3 - 21 WB5BKL - Nick - TX - K3 - 231QNI # 35 W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 802 WA4APB - Taylor - VA - K3 - 3475 K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183 AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398 ** QNI # 250 ** N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866 As ever if there are any errors please send me an email and I will repair the damage. I do need to spend a few hours with the database and get it all cleaned up. The information is intact it is simply scattered. When I am done I will print up an ordered roster to tickle my memory and then make a few backups in case of dire emergency (comets, floods, fire, plague, you know, the little things). Dale (WC7S) mentioned needing more wood because he is in high country nearing the first snow. I mentioned frost is coming soon so we both need to get back to work to prepare for our winter hibernation close to the fire and to the radio shack. He will enjoy the winter fox hunts while I keep building things and learning more. When the snow is deep and the fire is warm is the very best time to study and solder. The occasional climb onto the roof to shovel snow just gives time to ponder what I have studied :) Until next week stay well, 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] k3
ANY other radio?? :-) Yes, the Orions allow you to set (outside of EQ) both the LF and HF TX rolloff frequencies. On the other hand -- based on lengthy experience with a couple of Orions and an Orion II, it doesn't really buy you much in the overall scheme of things. Since the K3 transmits through (in normal SSB mode) the 2.8 (or 2.7) Khz filter, it's likely about where you seem to want it to be. In ESSB mode, where the radio transmits through the 6Khz filter, you do have control over the overall TX bandwidth, however you can't independently set the LF and HF rolloff's in a manner similar to the Orion. But you can certainly use that feature along with TX EQ to accomplish about the same thing. Re: [Elecraft] k3
I think Ted is referring to the low freq rolloff for TX. The Orion has a menu item that allows the user to set the low end and high end for TX. The K3 has an ESSB menu item if this is what you are looking for. It does require the use of the 6kHz AM filter. However other than adjusting the TX EQ you cannot set the lower and upper limits. The ESSB funcion does let you select the TX BW up to I think 4 kHz (not in front of my radio right now). - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Mon Oct 5 9:04 , Don Wilhelm sent: Ted, The LO CUT and HI CUT knobs will do exactly that at the IF, the display indicates the audio response. Hi Bill, I've used mine twice as a mobile in the WVQP (N8Q/m)and TnQP (N4Q/m). It worked well, but so did my K2. In all cases, I was running QRP. In both cases, the rig was only temporarily mounted. Initially I had some RFI/Feedback problems which were antenna related. These have been cleared up and both of the above contests went smooth. I'll probably move to 100W in the future, just to see how it goes. Both internal ATUs extended the Hustler coverage with ease for both CW and SSB. The antennas are tuned in the CW portion of the band. I worked a number of DX stations QRP from the vehicle even on 40M. Found a mount that I think may help, it was from an old piece of office equipment. The biggest challenge I have is with the computer and a stick shift hihi. 73, Julius n2wn William Hein-2 wrote: Anyone using a K3 in their car? Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise
The commercial CW operators used a 1-5 scale too: QSA1 to QSA5. It's much more practical than trying to read or guess the nine steps of S units, yet plenty accurate enough to clearly tell the other station how good his/her signal is coming in. It's fun to watch an S-meter wave back and forth (I prefer the wiggly-needle d'Arsonval meters) and it helps to see what the AGC is hiding as the levels change, but I'm astonished anyone would try to use one for anything more than a very general relative level indication. With the AGC off the meter is unnecessary since one can then hear the changes and differences in signal levels. The way I did it was to point at the link on that site and right click, save target as...and put it in a convenient file. When it has downloaded, it can then be played back. I haven't listened to all of it but it's good so far. [Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.41: Improved RX bass response; Flat DATA-mode EQ; Live memory recall; etc.
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.41 (with DSP rev. 2.37) is now available. See release notes below. More refinements are in the works. But alas, it was time to shoot the engineers and get some interim feedback on the many new features in this revision. -- IMPORTANT NOTE -- The latest version of K3 Utility (1.2.9.30) must be used if you plan to do receiver RF gain calibration. You can find K3 Utility on our K3 software page, along with the K3 beta-test firmware: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm Please send problem reports to k3supp...@elecraft.com. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 3.41 / DSP 2.37, 10-02-2009 * IMPROVED RX LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE in AM/SSB/CW MODES: Most noticeable with hi-fidelity headphones or large speakers. NORMalizing the DSP passband still sets the cutoff to about 100 Hz, but DSP controls can be adjusted to provide a lower response. RX EQ can enhance bass further. * NO RX EQ OR TX EQ IN DATA MODES: That is, the response is flat (rolling off below 200 Hz). The RX EQ and TX EQ menu entries now affect only the other modes. * LIVE MEMORY RECALL (MV): If you tap MV, then start rotating VFO A to select a memory, the K3 will now switch to the band/mode of each memory. Exit memory recall by tapping MV a second time. * VFO COARSE STEP ROUNDING: Tap '1' in the VFO CRS menu entry to select RND=NO or YES. If YES, the VFO frequency will be rounded off during COARSE tuning. This menu entry also sets the per-mode COARSE step size. Note: The RIT/XIT control moves the VFO in coarse steps if RIT and XIT are not in use (use CONFIG:VFO OFS to turn this on/off). * CWT (TUNING AID) NOW INDEPENDENT FOR CW DATA. * RF GAIN CALIBRATION PROCEDURE UPDATED: You’ll need the latest revision of K3 Utility and a 50-microvolt signal source (e.g., an XG2). * SUB RX NOISE BLANKER NOW FULLY INDEPENDENT OF MAIN: This includes the on/off state and NB LEVEL settings. Note: Set CONFIG:NB SAVE to YES to preserve your per-band NB on/off settings. * DSP INTERNAL STATUS MONITORING: In the TECH MD menu entry, tapping 1 (main) or 2 (sub) displays DSP status information. If it is “”, no error has been detected. Tapping CLR resets the data to “”. * CHANNEL HOPPING IN FM MODE LOADS REPEATER SETTINGS: Repeater offsets and PL tones are now loaded during scanning/hopping. * PL TONE DEVIATION ADJUSTABLE: Tapping '1' in CONFIG:FM DEV allows setting PL tone deviation (300-600 Hz in 30-Hz steps; default, 360 Hz). * EU REPEATER 1750 HZ PL TONE BURST: If a 1750 Hz PL TONE is selected, a 500 ms tone burst will be sent on each PTT activation. * EXTENDED 6-METER TUNING RANGE: The VFO can now be tuned down to 44 MHz to monitor signals that may be correlated with 6-meter band openings. Loss increases rapidly below 49 MHz (-34 dB at 45 MHz), so a preamp (e.g., the Elecraft PR6) may be needed to obtain a useful NF. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 XV-144 Power Output
Hi Eric, You have got it figured out. I would set the K3 to a little less than 1mw and then adjust R22 on the transverter for your desired output. That should give you plenty of range on the K3 power control for fine adjustment. 73, Bob, N6CM On Sun, Oct 4, 2009 at 6:55 PM, eric norris gliderboy1...@yahoo.com wrote: Dear Gang: I am using my K3/XV-144 to drive a cantankerous, shock-hazard Henry 2002A amplifier on 2m. In its current state, the 2002A can take only 11 watts drive. To get this out of the XV-144, I have to set the K3 to XV1 PWR L.06 At this power level (.06 mw) the PWR knob on the K3 will not adjust the output. If I set XV1 PWR L 1.0 (1 MW), the K3 pwr knob can be used to vary the K3 drive from .1 to 1.0 MW. However, turned all the way down to .1 mw still gives me 17 watts out of the XV-144 on my Bird 43 into a dummy load. The XV-144 is jumpered for 1MW operation. I believe what I need to do is to readjust R22 for more attenuation from the K3 so that .1MW will give me something less than 10 watts out from the XV-144. Is this correct? Or have I missed something? On a related topic, the 2002A has a problem that is driving me nuts. If there is anyone in the South SF Bay Area who is an expert in these matters, I'm willing to pay for help to get this amp fixed. I have already driven it down to Henry in LA who charged me $$$ and didn't fix it. Contact me OFF LIST if you can help.
