Re: [Elecraft] continuous relay click in RX ANT IN

2010-07-13 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
I found in my shack a Front End Saver
http://www.radio-ware.com/products/fes.htm that I never installed.

Seems is similar to this made from ICE, at least will add extra protection to
the K3, what do you think?

Or it will decrease the RX signals I can receive in the K3?

Thanks,

I had this going on too and a really slick way to fix the problem is
with an RF limiter...

http://www.iceradioproducts.com/reconly.html#rflimiter

I.C.E. makes a very cost effective unit that gets the job done very
well... I ordered the 196 unit and then I didn't want to have it with
RCA connectors on it so I asked them to build it wit the BNC connectors
like they do on the VHF unit. They had no problem with that and did so
no extra cost.

As far as I know that unit uses reed relays, and should have no detectable
loss. I think there might be two models of that, but I have only seen a reed
relay version.

The advantage of the one I saw is the low loss and no signal distortion
using relays. You must run the amplifier relay control through it to be sure
the protection sequence is correct.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and USB Audio Codec

2010-07-13 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I don't trust the quality of an external soundcard of this price.
It might be sufficient for PSK31 but probably not for Winmor. The
Signalink USB is good, but not for 20 bucks.

The USB Audio CODEC integrated circuit in the IC-7000 or IC-7600 has
the same specifications as the USB Audio CODEC in Signalink or a $15
USB headset adapter. There is no benefit to putting audio to digital
conversion in the radio and bringing the audio out using a driver
dependent protocol.

An integrated USB audio CODEC is nothing more than a gimmick that
provides no performance benefit while limiting user flexibility/choice,
increasing cost and decreasing reliability.

If one were going to provide digital output, it would be far better
to stream the raw in I/Q data from the DSP's ADC via firewire rather
than push it through two additional A/D and D/A steps and reduce it
to a single channel of audio.

I have not heard of a problem with the DSP in the IC-7200 or 7600.
From what I have heard this is not a real soundcard but the IF passband
after the DSP is sent to the audio codec via USB.
It would make it very easy using the K3 for digital soundcard modes without
 another external device.

transmit. Figured I had something hosed in the SL jumpers - checked three
times, they are OK. So, hooked up my Elecraft MH2 Mic and thought I'd give
SSB a try this afternoon. NO OUTPUT!

I have the K3 set on 14.200 (dummy load), RF power at 40w, Mic Sel = FP.L,
Mic + Lin = OFF. I press the PTT button on the mic, I get the red TX light
on the K3, the radio appears to go into transmit mode, but no inkling of RF
when I speak into the mic. I have the Mic control at 23, CMP = 0, Mon = 53.

So, what have I forgotten to set? I'm betting that whatever is hosed with
the SSB setting may fix my PSK31 problem, too. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Now I've heard everything

2010-07-13 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Can anyone else confirm or deny that their PA talks back to them?

Does not do it here. I've made the same tests using the SDR-IQ
with the directional coupler from my LP-100 and additional
attenuation for the input to the SDR-IQ. IMD was stable as long
as the power level was stable (Keep ALC at 5 bars and adjust power
with the power control) and not particularly temperature sensitive
although I did not push long key down times.

I also made measurements of transmit image (+/- 30 KHz) using the
FM filter for transmit in SSB and CW (no measurable image within
the range of the SDR-IQ) using the same test set-up.

The only thing I found necessary was to keep the SDR-IQ and K3
separated (could not leave the SDR-IQ set on the top of the K3)
and use good quality cable between the SDR-IQ and directional
coupler to limit any direct pick-up.

Having just acquired an RFSpace SDR-IQ I thought I'd take a look at
the K3's transmit IMD, particularly with respect to input voltage and
 output power.

So I engaged the 2-tone generator, connected a dummy load and
proceeded to take a look at the output spectrum.

I haven't gotten very far with this because 1) the IMD is apparently
temperature sensitive and drifts, becoming a moving target and 2) I
can hear the two tones acoustically emanating from the PA. The level
is somewhat proportional to RF power and goes away completely when
the power is reduced to the point where the PA drops out.

Can anyone else confirm or deny that their PA talks back to them?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Data - No Output, Need suggestions

2010-07-13 Thread Phil Hystad
Jim,

I am using essentially the same setup. I got a lot of help from Chen (W7AY)
the author of CocoaModem.

I also had a problem of no output and it turned out to be that I was using the
default jumper settings on the Signalink and you need to boost the output by
setting jumper 3 (JP3). Otherwise, the audio level is too low to drive the K3.

So, if you have not done that then I suggest you give it a try. From Chen's
advice, I have my audio level to about 0.25 volts RMS (I think that is right, I
am going from memory)...along with the Signalink TX level of about 1 oclock
this gives the recommended 4 (to 5) bars on the K3 ALC bar graph. More then
that and you will be overdriving.

anyone using CocoaModem and the K3 to do PSK31. Maybe we can go over
settings to see what I've messed up...

FireWire is not necessarily a great solution either. It will
definitely require special drivers at the computer end (viz, the
Edirol FA-66 that is common in ham SDR circles).

One good connection that I have come across is S/PDIF that is
available on the Icom IC-7800. It allows a connection between the
radio and the computer that is completely non-galvanic. No ground
loops, no RFI, down to -144 dB.

S/PDIF provides an audio path with up to 20 bits of resolution (about
120 dB, with 1 bit being 6.02 dB), with 24 bits being an option by
using the extra 4 steering bits as data.

The standard sampling rate for S/PDIF is 48,000 samples per second
stereo, which would support almost 50 kHz of bandwidth on an baseband
I/Q channel. S/PDIF provides up to about 30 feet separation between
equipment.

Both Firewire and S/PDIF lacks a standard way of passing control/
status signals. The Flex-5000 (which uses FireWire) used to hack into
the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) channel for control/
status; but I have not been following that development and it might
have since changed. The Icom IC-7800 goes through its regular CAT
path (RS-232 or CI-V, you get to choose, I believe).

In any case, if you want a rig like the K3 to support 123 dB of
dynamic range I/Q output, it will not come cheap. The Asahi AK-5394A
is probably the most expensive component in the front end of the
Flex-5000, and you have to be very careful with the circuit layout to
get a -125 dB noise floor when mixing analog and digital components.

We are definitely not talking about 16-bit codecs like the one in the
SignaLink USB -- which by the way, is a TI/Burr-Brown PCM-2902, and it
is not the $20 that people have been mentioning, but is $5.85 at
DigiKey :-).

Re: [Elecraft] Some OT help with a repeating email on this list

2010-07-13 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
When it doesn't happen to everyone, it's not being sent multiple times
from source.

This leaves your ISP. The best guess is mail processing software at
your node plus the processing time at your PC, with ISP's processing
probably having time-outs for certain activities, and your email plus
attached file is taking so long to come back and say I got it, delete
it, that it's doing the conservative thing, timing out and holding on
to it for another try.

If your ISP has a web read interface direct, then use it to delete a
duplicating file. This will short cut some of the processing time and
allow the ISP to mark it off. If this is happening on your ISP's web
interface, call the ISP, you can't fix it yourself.

[Elecraft] Questions about K3 repair and upgrades

2010-07-13 Thread David Windisch

Hi, all concerned:

1. Do I need smt de-soldering equipment to replace a failing CMP-PWR-MON
shaft encoder?

2. Can I install a second antenna jack without buying an antenna tuner I
don't need? Would I need a relay? I'd like to put 6M on ANT 2 for
convenience (and uncharacteristic economy since I'm on a fixed income now).

3. How does the DSP upgrade change what I've been satisfied with hearing for
several years, mostly on cw, with good cans? Full disclosure: my hearing at
just-shy of 67 is, ah, somewhat deteriorated with tinnitus.

4. Haven't felt the press for any of the other hardware mods. Should I? Do
any of you on that long list of builders/repairmen on the site do the mods?

Fwiw, I compared good experiences between a modified FT-1000D and a K3,
A/B-style with a coax switch, over a 6-8-month period in my shack. I have
only a small regret over selling the Yaesu: I miss 200W on 30M, to which
there's an easy fix. If the K3 were not on the market, I would still have
the FT-1000D; in my not-so-mumbled opinion, there's nothing better *that I
can afford* out there.

Tia for reading, and for any responses.

Brgds,
Dave, N3HE

[Elecraft] Heads up - Small Price increase on K3 and our other products coming

2010-07-13 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
As a heads up to our loyal customers (and potential customers who are
considering our products) we will be adjusting our prices up slightly on
the K3 and a number of our other products before the end of next month.
Of course, any orders received prior to that point will be honored at
the pre-increase pricing.

As the U.S. slowly heads out of recession we are seeing our suppliers
increase their prices on a number of components etc. (A normal
occurrence for this part of the economic cycle.) So far we have been to
absorb most of these, but we will have to make some adjustments as we go
forward. Of course we will strive to keep any increases modest and
reasonable.

[Elecraft] K-1 RIT Range mod, audio AGC.

2010-07-13 Thread k...@juno.com

Is there a modification to reduce the RIT range on the K-1 to
about +- 1KHz?

I'd also be grateful to know of a pot suitable for this mod that had a center
detent. Or a multi-turn pot that would fit in the allowed space

Also, I'm looking for an outboard audio AGC circuit into about a 2 Watt amp. I
find that the sidetone is way too loud when I'm searching for weak signals and
have the audio turned up. Am now using a DSP-59+ for the AGC action but it is
a bit noisy and physically large.

Re: [Elecraft] Some OT help with a repeating email on this list

2010-07-13 Thread David Cutter
Hello Guy

Thanks for that run-down.

It never happens on the web access to my email and by the time I've loaded
up the web page it's usually stopped replicating. Anyway, these days it
only replicates once and then not very often. I felt sure it was some kind
of timing problem and probably the laptop with some issue. I updated the
BIOS recently and it may have influenced things.

Re: [Elecraft] K-1 RIT Range mod, audio AGC.

2010-07-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tim,

There are several ways to change the RIT range. The circuit is a simple
voltage divider with the pot in the middle. Currently each resistor is
10k - Front Panel R4 and R5 sit on each side of the pot and the series
combination is fed by the 6 volt regulated supply. If you increase both
R4 and R5 (keeping both values the same) the voltage range controlled by
the pot will be smaller. How much smaller is to be determined either by
calculation along with checking the datasheet for the MV209 Varactor or
experimentation. Right now the offset voltage to the varactor in the
VFO is varied from 4 volts to 2 volts - and you may want to cut it by
about half that range (I have not checked the datasheet, that is only a
good guess, so you might try 24 k instead of 10k for R4 and R5 - if that
does not give you the range you want, try another value.

Ant 10k pot of the same size and mounting can be used in place of R3 -
if you can find one with a center detent, I am certain many would like
to know about it. The problem with using a center detent is that zero
RIT offset may not occur right at the center of the pot rotation, and
you will have to fiddle with the relative values of R4 and R5 to place
the center where you want it.

No answer on the outboard AGC - but you might want to adjust the
sidetone volume down in relation to the signals using the ST L menu.
Having the sidetone volume follow the AF Gain control is an oft disputed
point for the K2 (which does not adjust sidetone volume with
AF Gain) - it seems it is not possible to please everyone.

[Elecraft] K3 Operating Tip: Using TX TEST to adjust speech controls and ALC level

2010-07-13 Thread Wayne Burdick
The K3 provides a way to adjust speech controls and ALC level off-air.

(Technical note: The reason this is possible is that the K3's fast ALC
is established in the DSP. This means the K3's first-I.F. crystal
filters can be used in TX mode to ensure that dynamic ALC responses
are band-limited. This prevents the kind of splatter often heard from
rigs that apply fast ALC in hardware, after the crystal filter. This
technique also allows the DSP to provide very effective, very clean
speech compression.)

To adjust speech controls off-air:

1. Hold TX TEST (right end of the MODE switch). The TX icon on the
LCD will flash slowly as a reminder that you're not actually
transmitting.

2. Switch to CMP/ALC metering by holding METER. Temporarily set the
CMP control to zero.

3. While talking into the mic, adjust the MIC level so you peak around
5-7 bars on the ALC meter during normal speech. After that you can
optionally add compression (CMP).

4. To return to normal operation, hold TX TEST again, and make sure
the TX icon is no longer flashing. You should now be able to set PWR
to any desired level without impacting your speech settings.

If you'd like to lock the CMP, MIC, and PWR level settings (perhaps to
avoid having your 6-year-old tweak them, like mine does), locate the
PWR SET menu entry (CONFIG menu) and tap 1 to LOCK. You'll then see
LOCKED whenever any of these three controls is rotated.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 10W PA problem

I removed the PA transistors and measured the bias, which is 0.64V and

Probably, it was only an heatsinking problem, unless the TX current is
wrong: without the PA transistors, with RF Power set to 5.0W (with any
value greater than 0.1W is the same), the TUNE current is 0.62A (0.24A

Is it ok 0.62A?

For proper heatsinking, yes the PA transistors must fit flat against

Re: [Elecraft] Questions about K3 repair and upgrades

2010-07-13 Thread The Smiths

 1. Do I need smt de-soldering equipment to replace a failing CMP-PWR-MON
 shaft encoder?

No

 2. Can I install a second antenna jack without buying an antenna tuner I
don't need? Would I need a relay? I'd like to put 6M on ANT 2 for
convenience (and uncharacteristic economy since I'm on a fixed income now).

There's room for another SO-239 connector in the back, remove the back plate
and you can mount it there. Connecting it to the rig is another matter.

 3. How does the DSP upgrade change what I've been satisfied with hearing for
several years, mostly on cw, with good cans? Full disclosure: my hearing at
just-shy of 67 is, ah, somewhat deteriorated with tinnitus.

The DSP upgrade makes a big difference if you're using ESSB. With CW you keep
your filter under 500Hz most of the time. So most of that freq. isn't even
there... However, After doing the mod myself, I've found that the low Freq.
roll off portion gives me about an extra 75Hz at -30dB and about another 150Hz
range in the low end if I go down to -60dB

The daughter card high end roll off part of the upgrade is rather nice on the
ears. It takes a lot of the high end noise and filters it out. Again, if
you're using a tight filter I've found that it's not THAT big a difference. In
most cases your filter will be too tight to hear all the high freq. If you
can't hear above 8 or 12KHz, don't bother! It wont make a bit of difference.

 4. Haven't felt the press for any of the other hardware mods. Should I? Do
any of you on that long list of builders/repairmen on the site do the mods?

How old is your rig? What mods do you need? There are a few as a CW op that I
would do.. Like the Synth Board mods. The VFO noise mod, the Speaker protection
mod (not needed really if you swap the DSP board) and a few others.

Wait till the KPA500 comes out, save your money now and you can have your 200
watts back again.

Tia for reading, and for any responses.

Re: [Elecraft] Any P3 Updates?

2010-07-13 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Bob,

Our field testers are pounding on things as we speak. We're quickly
iterating on firmware, trying to keep up. The manual is mostly written
and should be available soon.

We may have something else to add later tonight or tomorrow regarding
the schedule.

I've been having a great time with my field-test P3. It's cool to be
able to see an entire band segment at a glance -- bands that sound
dead often don't look dead. I'm making good use of the P3's point-
and-click markers, and I'm quickly learning what different modulation
modes look like on screen. You can even copy CW signals off the
waterfall display thanks to the very fast sampling speed.

Patience is a virtue.

The P3 (and manual) will be available in due time.
Like as fine wine, it cannot be rushed. Give the Field Testers time to
try it out and review the manual and then (and only then) it will be
released. You will appreciate the product more after the Field Test.
Only the Field Testers will see the preliminary copies of the manual - a
lot of the Field Test effort is scrubbing the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] Any P3 Updates?

2010-07-13 Thread Bruce Beford
Eric posted the following on July 4th. This qualifies as an update in my
book.

We're darn close and the P3 is proceeding on plan so far. Everything has
been released to production and we are just awaiting delivery of the
final production sheet metal and stuffed PCBs. We're also refining the
firmware as we go through field test over the next couple of weeks.
Based on where we were a week ago, my best estimate is somewhere between
7/15 and 7/25 for initial shipments. It will then take about 4-5 weeks
to ship all of the rather large backlog.

[Elecraft] Let's Try This Again -- was [K3] ... A 750 Hz, 8-Pole ... Filter?

2010-07-13 Thread Gary Hvizdak
Referring to http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2010-June/131426.html
recently I posted several reasons why K3 owners might be interested in a 750
Hz 8-pole INRAD roofing filter. The response to that post was immediate and
enthusiastic, but it wasn't sufficient for us to commission INRAD to begin
production.

Perhaps the reason for the limited response was that folks were already
firmly focused on Field Day? Whatever the reason ... once again ... if you
are interested in a 750 Hz 8-pole INRAD roofing filter for your K3, please
email me (off-Reflector) at webmas...@unpcbs.com to express your interest.

If instead you think that there might be a greater demand for some other
bandwidth 8-pole INRAD roofing filter, please email me (off-Reflector) to
let me know that width and include your reasoning for desiring that other
width.

73 and TNX for the B/W,
Gary KI4GGX
K3 #2724

P.S. Keep in mind that if Wayne and company ever do get around to offering
a few choices of their long-promised dual-width (formerly variable-width)
filters, that those filters will almost certainly be of the same 5-pole
design as the three existing Elecraft roofing filters.

[Elecraft] KPA100/KAT100 SWR Fault

2010-07-13 Thread Douglas Furton
Dear Reflector,

Hello again. I wish I wrote more often to say how good my K2 and KPA100 with
KAT100 are working, but I don't. They have been working great.

I built a KPA100 and KAT100 into an EC2 enclosure. Everything has worked well
for quite some time now (~1 yr.).

Today, I write with a problem: I fired up my rig and find that the SWR
indication on the KAT100 is faulty. Here are the symptoms, transmitting into a
dummy load:

First, something that works properly: when I dial up the output power without
transmitting, the PWR range LED switches from low to high at ~9 watts.

Then -- with the ATU in CAL mode -- when I hit TUNE with the power set to the
low end of either the low- or high-power ranges none of the SWR LEDs light.
With the K2 still in TUNE mode, as I slowly dial up the power, suddenly all of
the SWR LEDs light. This happens if I start at 1 watt and tune to about 5
watts; and if I start at 10 watts and dial up to about 50 watts.

When I hit TUNE at about 1 watt and dial up the power past 9 watts, the SWR
LEDS come on at about 5 watts, then I hear a relay click in the KAT100/KPA100
indicating it changed power range at about 9 watts, but the PWR range LED does
not flip from low to high and all the SWR LEDs remain lit.

I also get erratic HiRFL messages on the K2 display, but not reliably when all
the SWR lights come on as I described above.

The K2/KPA100/KAT100 currents are normal.

Otherwise, the rig seems to perform as it did before this fault appeared.
Output power is good, and it all seems to transmit into an antenna that I know
is resonant and good on 20 m.

What should I check out first?

It might help to know that between the time I noticed this problem and the last
time I used the rig, there was a thunderstorm in my area. While I normally set
my antenna switch to ground the antenna and project my xmitters, I did not do
so this time. My coax is grounded with two levels of lightening protection at
the house: cheap lightening-arrester connectors outdoors followed by an
alpha-delta coax switch with the arc-plug indoors. The arc-plug is not
popped, or however you describe it -- it works fine still.

Perhaps a lightening pulse of some sort caught something in the SWR section of
the KAT100???

Thanks to the community for help with this problem.

Doug

Oh, Good Grief!
I'm speechless. A response in five minutes from one of the founders of the
company along with the head K2 guru.
Thanks guys!
Now, THAT'S Elecraft in action.
Best regards, Bob

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100/KAT100 SWR Fault

2010-07-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Doug,

I suspect that one or both of the wattmeter diodes in the KAT100 are
fried. It would be a good idea to check those in the KPA100 as well.
KAT100 D1 and D2 and KPA100 D16 and D17.

 Dear Reflector,

Hello again. I wish I wrote more often to say how good my K2 and KPA100 with
KAT100 are working, but I don't. They have been working great.

I built a KPA100 and KAT100 into an EC2 enclosure. Everything has worked
well for quite some time now (~1 yr.).

Today, I write with a problem: I fired up my rig and find that the SWR
indication on the KAT100 is faulty. Here are the symptoms, transmitting into
 a dummy load:

First, something that works properly: when I dial up the output power without
transmitting, the PWR range LED switches from low to high at ~9 watts.

Then -- with the ATU in CAL mode -- when I hit TUNE with the power set to the
low end of either the low- or high-power ranges none of the SWR LEDs light.
With the K2 still in TUNE mode, as I slowly dial up the power, suddenly all
of the SWR LEDs light. This happens if I start at 1 watt and tune to about 5
watts; and if I start at 10 watts and dial up to about 50 watts.

When I hit TUNE at about 1 watt and dial up the power past 9 watts, the SWR
LEDS come on at about 5 watts, then I hear a relay click in the KAT100/KPA100
indicating it changed power range at about 9 watts, but the PWR range LED
does not flip from low to high and all the SWR LEDs remain lit.

I also get erratic HiRFL messages on the K2 display, but not reliably when
all the SWR lights come on as I described above.

 The K2/KPA100/KAT100 currents are normal.

Otherwise, the rig seems to perform as it did before this fault appeared.
Output power is good, and it all seems to transmit into an antenna that I
know is resonant and good on 20 m.

What should I check out first?

It might help to know that between the time I noticed this problem and the
last time I used the rig, there was a thunderstorm in my area. While I
normally set my antenna switch to ground the antenna and project my xmitters,
I did not do so this time. My coax is grounded with two levels of lightening
protection at the house: cheap lightening-arrester connectors outdoors
followed by an alpha-delta coax switch with the arc-plug indoors. The
arc-plug is not popped, or however you describe it -- it works fine still.

Perhaps a lightening pulse of some sort caught something in the SWR section
 of the KAT100???

Thanks to the community for help with this problem.

 Doug

[Elecraft] eHam.net forum message

2010-07-13 Thread RLVZ

Dick Van Zandt (K9OM) has sent you a forum message for you to review.

Noisy DSP experiences.

Forum: Articles
Subject: An Interesting CQ WPX CW Experience

The quot;noisy DSPquot; phenomena is well known. Rob Sherwood has also
identified this problem and has written about it.

I have the following radios
K3
K2
Flex5000
IC7700
Perseus

ALL the above radios except the K2suffer from the noisy front end problem when
mild QRN is around. It sounds like these radios have a reverb unit on the
receiver which multiplies static and pulse noise.

Elecraft claims to have a cure for this problem, however I still find the
receiver noisy. The K2 I prefer over the K3 on CW when there is QRN around.
The filters on the K2 sound better on CW when there is QRN about.

It amazes me every time that I turn on any of my old old analog radios like
the TS830S or the FT1000D and do a comparison. The QRN all of a sudden becomes
tolerable and not so nerve wrecking.

The TS830S is still my favorite low band radio for picking weak signals out of
QRN on 160 and 80 meters. This is especially so when there is a lot static and
QRN around.

Its unfortunate that there is no current model analog transceiver manufactured
that has fantastic receiver dynamic range numbers like the Elecraft K3. The
only option available is to build your own like the PA3AKE H-mode mixer high
performance receiver.
