[Elecraft] KPA500 driven by KX3 ... what output to be expected ?

2011-06-20 Thread Enno Korma, PF5X
Hi all,

I believe once the KX3 is shipping it would be interesting to use it with
the KPA500. Given the rel. small size of the KPA500 and its built-in PSU,
the total package may be even smaller then a KXPA100 + stand-alone PSU. Only
question, is the KPA500 usable with 10W drive, and what will be the output
of the KPA500 with that drive level (and what about its efficiency).

KX3 would require power supply anyway. Another approach would be to have 13v
power supply built in into KXPA100. Then this PS could be used for KX3 while
operating from the base.
BTW my Expert 1K-FA delivers 400 watts out when driven with 10 watts.

[Elecraft] Managing Multiple Keys/Paddles More Easily

2011-06-20 Thread Edward R. Cole
Having struggled with cable changes to connectors on the back of
radios for years, my solution, when I built my current ham shack, was
to space my radio table out from the wall 2 feet to allow access
behind the equipment. My radio cabinet is now three shelves above
the table top. I bought some ordinary peg board (with all the holes)
attached to behind the table to floor level and attach wiring runs
with tywraps thru the holes. Photos:
http://www.kl7uw.com/station%20layout.htm

It is still a mess of cables but an accessible mess. In time I
expect the configuration will reach some level of maturity so I can
make the cable layout a little neater. One thing I would do if the
room were larger is allow at least 3-feet space behind the radio
table as it is a tight fit when I need to kneel down to make
connections or test something.

My wife tells me that she will build me a whole new ham shack
attached to the garage if we ever win the lottery or other such
windfall. Still I keep fit running between the workbench in the
garage to the ham shack to the two towers outside. Having the ham
shack adjacent to the workshop and direct outside entrance would save
some shoe-leather! My wife would have the third bedroom for normal
use and the noise would be gone! The question is whether the radios
are the noise or am I? Ha!

become annoying to change keys/paddles. I have to reach behind or

Yes.

If you connect a K3 to a KPA500 with the KPAK3AUX cable, and omit the
interrupter that looks like a gender changer with a pin removed, you do
not need a separate K3 to KPA500 key line. The required keying line is in
the KPAK3AUX cable.

Re: [Elecraft] Managing Multiple Keys/Paddles More Easily

2011-06-20 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Ed,

An approach which I have used for many years which keeps me sane (?) is to
use a homebrewed box containing rotary switches to select which rig or which
connector of a rig should be connected to the key (or which key), mic,
phones, loudspeaker or whatever. IIRC the generic term for such a device is
a 'breakout box', which I believe is usually associated with audio circuits.
It can also be used to control coax relays to select which TX or RX is
connected to an antenna's feeder, or which feeder if more than one leaves
the shack, also control remote antenna selectors (coax relays). The
possibilities are endless :-)

I find that such a 'box' helps greatly when hopping between HF and UHF for
example, and it removes the need to struggle with connectors.

[Elecraft] P3

2011-06-20 Thread Bob Fuller
I’m new on the reflector as of today. I searched for this and didn’t see
anything that addresses my thought and I hope I’m not repeating something that
has already been covered somewhere. If so, please let me know.

To me it would be useful if the following capability were available to me:

When I move a marker with the P3 knob and then tap it to tune the K3 frequency
to my selection, I almost never hit the exact carrier frequency in SSB. I
then have to move my hand over to the K3 VFO for fine tuning. It’s not a big
deal but over and over in a contest this might become time consuming.

If, after tapping the select knob on the P3 it would be useful to me if, for a
few seconds, the knob were to become a direct K3 fine frequency tune control.
I wouldn’t have to switch back and forth between the P3 K3 all the time. If
the knob isn’t turned for a short time, say 5-seconds, it would revert to its
normal operation of moving the marker only.

Others’ thoughts on this would be welcome.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Backpacking a K1?

2011-06-20 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi John,

The K1 has very low current drain (on the order of 50 mA on receive),
which may allow you to use a small battery pack. The KBT1 internal
battery is good for something like 7 watts output.

There's also an internal ATU option (KAT1), which has decent range, so
you can leave your coax at home and just toss a wire into a tree.

The KX1 is a bit smaller, a bit lower in power output and ATU range,
but has an attached keyer paddle option for really lightweight and
convenient operation.

[Elecraft] K3 QSK - not so good?

OK, I'll put my head in the lion's mouth. I'm using qsk on cw and I find
that if the rf gain is turned up to hear some background noise, there's
a transient or click when the rig switches to rx (but not when it
switches from rx to tx). To hear this really badly, try opening the cw
b/w up to 2kHz and sending a stream of dots. The effect is there even at
400Hz, and it's rather off-putting. What am I doing wrong?

[Elecraft] KPA500 kit

2011-06-20 Thread Andrew Faber
Just to whet everyone's appetites further, here's a one week report on my
new KPA500 (ser. 077, almost matches my K3, ser. 076), built as a Field Test
kit.
The assembly was very straightforward, easier than the K3. It was speeded
up by the fact that the parts inventory was missing from the preliminary kit
manual, so no time was spent checking for completeness -- I just kept
building, waiting to see if anything crucial had been omitted (nothing was).
There was a pre-production glitch with a ribbon cable, but that was quickly
remedied by Bob Wolbert, K6XX, the project manager, and the finished kit
works great.
Although this may not bear management's approval, I gave it several hours
of workout in the All Asian contest this weekend, running JA's at a steady
600 watts on my wattmeter. Nary a problem, and the temperature readout
never went above 60 degrees C. (it's rated for 90 degrees C.).
The integration with the K3 is delightful. The amp and radio follow each
other's band changes, and the K3 remembers two power levels, the standby and
operate levels, and switches automatically. The KPA500 also comes on when
you turn on the K3 (provided the main power switch on the back of the amp is
on), so it's just like having a more powerful radio. All in all, operation
is really seamless with the K3. I imagine it would be almost as good with
any other radio, as the amp, when not connected to the K3, switches bands
with the first dit due to rf sampling.
Anyway, I'm one happy camper with the KPA500, and wanted to share my
experience.

[Elecraft] XG3 RF signal source as a CW beacon

2011-06-20 Thread Wayne Burdick
Has anyone tried using the XG3's CW message facility to create a 10-
or 6-meter beacon? Just add antenna :)

At 0 dBm output, the signal would be 50 dB below 100 watts. If the 100-
W signal would have been S9+30 dB at the receiver, the XG3's signal
would be at around S4.

If anyone sets up a beacon, please post the frequency to the list so
we can all tune in.

[Elecraft] Looking for CAT-Command

2011-06-20 Thread Martin
Elecrafters,
my Logging-Program - UCX-Log - is able to send CAT-Commands to the K3 by
tapping a F-Key. This is great for contesting etc.
My intention is to remote control M1-M4 .
When i send swt16;swt21; , M1 is played.
In SSB the K3 switches back to receive after the message.
In cw it gets stuck in transmit until you tap a key on the front panel.
Adding swt16; to the command results in a short dit when in cw or no
transmit at all in ssb.

Is there a workaround?
Did i miss something?

Re: [Elecraft] Managing Multiple Keys/Paddles More Easily

2011-06-20 Thread Brendan Minish
My approach ash been to use an old audio patch-bay, you can pick these
up pretty cheaply on ebay

I wrote it up here
http://ei6iz.com/?p=67

I have expanded the number of inputs in use a bit since and fills up the
now vacant Icom 7800 sized hole in my my shack nicely..

It also allows me to do things like plug in a second headset for a shack
visitor, Great for K3 diversity demos.

to space my radio table out from the wall 2 feet to allow access

the table top. I bought some ordinary peg board (with all the holes)
attached to behind the table to floor level and attach wiring runs
with tywraps thru the holes. Photos:

Ha!

[Elecraft] Suggestions for 10 MHz Signal Source for the K3?

2011-06-20 Thread David and Dianne on Comcast
Hi Everyone,

I am considering a K3EXREF just for fun, no other
reason.

Looking for suggestions for a reasonably priced 10
MHz external signal source.

Can anyone offer some suggestions? GPSDO? OCXO?
Rubidium Standard?

I have seen some used Trimble Thunderbolt GPSDO's
on eBay form China. I'm just not sure about the
wisdom of ordering any of these units.

Suggestions would be appreciated on or off the list.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 5553 Is on the air..!!

2011-06-20 Thread Bruce McLaughlin
Well, congratulations. If you already owned a K3 I assume the new radio
provided very few surprises. I also own two K3s but I am embarrassed to
admit that both were factory assembled. I don't know why since I managed to
build a K2/100 with most of the accessories without any problem. I am even
more embarrassed to admit that I haven't even peeked under the hood of
either radio and I really should do that. I have heard a rumor that they
are driven by hamsters pedaling madly on wheels but I guess I can only
dispel that by looking inside. Who knows. If I do that I may find that
feeding them will even increase the performance further. Perhaps we will
meet one day on the air but after this message I suspect if you hear my call
sign you will probably just change bands!

What a joy to assemble the K3 and other Eklecraft equipment. Not a

test was successful and all calibration went without a hitch.

The is my second K3.. The first was factory assembled and I really

Re: [Elecraft] P3 (fine tune mode)

2011-06-20 Thread Bob Cunnings
I suggested the same thing a while back...

http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg100958.html

so it's nice to know I'm not alone!

Bob NW8L

Thanks,
Bob, W7KWS

Re: [Elecraft] P3 (fine tune mode)

2011-06-20 Thread Gary Gregory
I think this would be a very good feature to have. I do not like the way the
QSY Tap is used also. I can never end up where I need to be without going to
the main VFO etc.

Hopefully the powers that be are listening:-)

I’m new on the reflector as of today. I searched for this and didn’t see
anything that addresses my thought and I hope I’m not repeating something
 that
has already been covered somewhere. If so, please let me know.

To me it would be useful if the following capability were available to me:

When I move a marker with the P3 knob and then tap it to tune the K3
 frequency
to my selection, I almost never hit the exact carrier frequency in SSB.
  I
then have to move my hand over to the K3 VFO for fine tuning. It’s not a
 big
deal but over and over in a contest this might become time consuming.

If, after tapping the select knob on the P3 it would be useful to me if,
 for a
few seconds, the knob were to become a direct K3 fine frequency tune
 control.
I wouldn’t have to switch back and forth between the P3 K3 all the time.
  If
the knob isn’t turned for a short time, say 5-seconds, it would revert to
 its
normal operation of moving the marker only.

Others’ thoughts on this would be welcome.

 Thanks,
 Bob, W7KWS

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 RF signal source as a CW beacon

2011-06-20 Thread David Pratt
This raises something that has puzzled me for a while, Wayne. Are you
saying that a 50dB POWER reduction at the transmitter equates to a 50dB
VOLTAGE reduction at the receiver?

73 de David G4DMP

In a recent message, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com writes
At 0 dBm output, the signal would be 50 dB below 100 watts. If the 100-
W signal would have been S9+30 dB at the receiver, the XG3's signal
would be at around S4.

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 RF signal source as a CW beacon

2011-06-20 Thread Alan Bloom
The decibel is always a power ratio. So for example, 20 dB is a 100:1
power ratio. If the impedance is the same, that works out to a 10:1
voltage ratio.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Build

2011-06-20 Thread Jim Brown
I was another beta builder, and I did the deed on Saturday, in between a
bunch of honeydoos and a dinner in a restaurant. I can confirm Ed's
comments about an easy assembly from a well written manual. Found a few
typos, but everything went smoothly, and I got a tour of the inside of
the amp. Very nice piece, well built. I took about four hours to do it,
including making notes of the typos. Others might do it a lot faster.
:) Only complaint is that Elecraft STILL doesn't understand the Pin
One problem. The RCA connectors for ALC and PTT float from the chassis.
AARGH.

Buying this as a kit is strongly recommended.

Yeah, why not...we in VK are most likely smart enough to have our very own
 Elecraft net.
