Some mail clients - Apple mail for instance, will popup the real URL underlying
the link if you hover over the link in the mail.
The number of times paypal turns out to be something like
'grab.themoney.andrun.com' is quiet interesting! It will do it for email
addresses too :-)

2011-08-17 Thread Dave Sergeant
It seems every week or two a simple spam mail like this gets a long
thread on the reflector.

I preview mail with Mailwasher. This one was so obviously spam that it
was deleted there straight away. And Mailwasher also allows you to
easily see where the URL points (links to nastysite.com...). It is sad
that spam does get on this list, but it is no big issue. Just delete it
and get on with life.

Paul,
Sorry to hear about the loss of all your equipment. In looking at your order I
have a question.
Why are you ordering both the 2.1 and 1.8 KHZ filters? I have the 1.8 KHZ
filter in mine and it really works effectly on SSB, Didigal and CW (Wide). If I
were you I would order the 6 KHZ filter instead. I find it comes in handy when
tunning the band and I do run AM.

I also look forward to meeting many of you on this forum.

Maybe we can help each other out...

[Elecraft] P3 Manual Calibration procedure question

2011-08-17 Thread Tommy Alderman
I'm sure this has been discussed before but if so, I have missed it.

On page 24 of the P3 Owner's Manual, Rev. B, March 29, 2011, under the
heading of Amplitude Calibration the forth button down, it states to set the
signal generator for 7040 kHz and the following button below says to set
the transceiver to approximately 7015 kHz so the signal is centered on the
right half of the display. Is this a typo? If not, can someone please
explain the purpose of doing this?

Thanks and 73

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Manual Calibration procedure question

2011-08-17 Thread Alan Bloom
There is a small variation in IF output level from the K3 for signals
that are within the passband of the K3 crystal filter. (The crystal
filter is after the IF OUT tap-off point but the input impedance of some
crystal filters can load down the signal level a little.) De-tuning the
calibration signal avoids the error.

[Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread kf4clo
My K2 is set up with a power supply to the 100w connection and a battery to
the low power connection,
If commercial power cuts off without warning(and it does sometimes)the K2
stays on with battery power.
I am looking for a way to do this with my K3 so I can at least shut down
from the front panel when this happens. I understand the K3 don't like it
when shutdown other than the front panel. Maybe a battery between the power
suppley and the K3?(or is there a better way).

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread Vic K2VCO
You could connect a battery and a power supply to the K3 power input, if you
put a diode
in series with the battery and one in series with the power supply. The
cathodes of the
diodes would go toward the K3. Then as long as the voltage of the PS was
greater than that
from the battery, the power would come from the PS. If the PS went off it would
come from
the battery. The diodes would prevent any current from flowing between the PS
and the battery.

Of course a UPS is an idea, but many UPS' generate a lot of radio noise. After
all, they
contain inverters, which are switching devices.

from the front panel when this happens. I understand the K3 don't like it
when shutdown other than the front panel. Maybe a battery between the power
suppley and the K3?(or is there a better way).

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread Fred Townsend
Vic, what you are describing is called a diode 'OR' gate. That works well
with logic but it has some problems with power. If the diode is not ideal it
will drop voltage across the diode. That can amount to considerable power
loss and destroy the diode if you are not carful. That's why you see such
devices sold on heat sinks (called battery isolators). A better solution if
you can set the power supply to the float voltage of the battery, then float
the battery across the power connection to the K3. This has a bonus that the
battery acts as a filter.
Remember the power supply voltage must match the battery float voltage which
is around 13.85v +/- 50 mv.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread Vic K2VCO
There will be about 0.6v drop across each diode. That won't be a problem for
the power
supply. It will reduce the amount of time the battery will operate the K3 a
bit, but the
K3 will work down to a pretty low voltage to start with.

Obviously the diodes have to be rated properly and heatsinked if necessary.

Float-charging the battery is nice, but you have to be very careful. Too much
voltage can
destroy the battery, too little will shorten its life. There is also the
problem of
producing hydrogen if it's not a sealed battery, etc.

I just wanted to provide the simplest solution possible for the original
poster's question.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF
G'day!
I use 6 x 2.2V, 250AH Gel Cells in parallel with my 30A linear power supply to
run my K3.
The battery sets float voltage happens to be 13.8V so all is good.
I have another set of gelcells here which runs my 150W output 2m linear
amplifier and
which is floated by a separate power supply.
I also have 2 x 12V deep cycle wet cell batteries here but they are used more
for portable
ops as they are considerably lighter than the gelcells. (The gelcells weigh
about 23Kg
each!)
I don't use or need diodes anywhere to be able to run this setup.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Front panel shut down question.

2011-08-17 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Perhaps the simplest solution is to just not worry about it? Whilst
yanking the power supply while the K3 is running is not recommended,
the chances of an unexpected power outage actually doing any harm are
fairly minimal, AFAIK. Keep a copy of your configuration (using the K3
Utility) so you can reload it in a worst-case scenario... and be
happy...
