Re: [Elecraft] The tortuous road from Aptos to UK
Exceptional for parcelfarce Geoff! I note you picked it up which I think is the norm. Back in 08, I purchased my k2/100 kit. Drove round trip of 100 odd miles to collect it, had to pay them £70 import duty( which is STILL not repaid) even though the commodity code was in plain view. Since then all parcels have been by UPS Hassle free and delivered to the door, the driver takes the hmc bit ie vat, job done. Each to their own on this one Geoff, but one bitten, twice shy! [Elecraft] K1: K1 in the Wild - SOTA Expedition
We got together and bought Carl WA3SEE a K1 kit as a retirement present. He spent the rainy/windy days caused by Hurricane Irene building it, with a few missing capacitors and a bad xtal slowing him down a bit. But it worked fine on the bench. Yesterday, Carl and I hike the Appalachian Trail in MD with the K1 and operated from Lamb's Knoll, an official summit as defined by the http://www.sota.org.uk/ Summit on the Air folks. A blog post with more detail can be found http://security.typepad.com/internet_security_be_care/2011/09/biking-carrolls-hills-summitting-on-the-air-from-the-knoll-of-a-lamb.html here . As a satisfied K3 user, I was really impressed with the K1. Compared to past QRP rigs, the receiver was just s quiet and sharp. 73, John K3TN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K1-K1-in-the-Wild-SOTA-Expedition-tp6808133p6808133.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 signal tracing...
Hi all, In a quest to get to the bottom of my K2 not having enough volume (after ascertaining the audio section is ok) I started upon the Signal Tracing section of the manual, made up the Elecraft RF probe and even made the 10.000 MHz xtal oscillator - appendix E page 9. (Note: My K2 is not insensitive, just barely adequate in volume. An extra audio amp would probably sort it out, but at about $700 for the basic kit I shouldn't need to; in fact most users DON'T need to so I guess there's something not quite right with my kit.) First 'issue': The RF probe doesn't come close to providing RMS readings on my DMM. Three volts p-p of the 10MHz oscillator measured with 100MHz scope (measured when connected to the K2 antenna input) input should give an RMS of about 1.06 volts by my reckoning. DDM 'RMS' using probe reads 200 mV, confirmed by connecting probe to DC-coupled scope. No good for recording the 'actual' against the 'expected' measurements in the manual. Am I missing something here? I decided to ditch the probe and use the scope and derive the RMS from the peak-to-peak measurements. Mixer, IF Amplifiers and crystal Filter section Appendix E page 11 Most readings were near enough to those in the manual until I got to 8: IF saturated output measurements. I could only get close to the figures with RF max and AGC off otherwise no output at U11. Is AGC off for this test is correct or do have I a fault? (Such a fault would surely make the K2 worse than mine is...?) 2nd crystal filter output seemed ok, but product detector saturated output (with oscillator output at max or set to give 0.15 Vrms as in para 8?) had no significant gain. AGC tests also App E, page 11 This was ok but I couldn't get the U2 pin 1 volts above 4.8V even after peaking the tuning. It should be 6.9V but at what oscillator input level? Either I'm not interpreting the instructions here correctly (they seem a bit vague regarding AGC on or off settings), my K2 is within the spread of voltage tolerances or I have a fault, although seemingly not a serious one - I don't know. I'm not going to do any more checks is case I am already 'barking up he wrong tree'! So perhaps someone could clarify some of the tests or suggest other checks. Re: [Elecraft] The tortuous road from Aptos to UK
I have used international parcel post twice. The first time it got lost and I had to wait about 2 months for a reshipment from Elecraft that did get through. I don't think the original shipment was ever found. The second time, it came to Parcelforce's international clearing centre (somehere in the midlands). They erroneously charged me import duty despite the fact that the correct tariff code was there on the documentation. I wrote a letter of complaint and a claim for that to be returned. I did get my money back after 2 months. Their excuse was that their import duty system only allowed the first part of the tariff code, and then chose the one with the highest duty! No apology, and this has to rank as a pretty feeble excuse. I suggest you write a formal complaint and a claim. On other occasions I have used UPS and each time the service was faultless if expensive. Re: [Elecraft] K2 signal tracing...
Ian, If you have the Extremely Strong Signal Handling mod installed on your K2, the diodes will limit the signal at the input to the IF amplifier and you will not be able to do the 'saturated' tests. It sounds like your K2 is working OK. The AGC will make no difference in your readings until you progress to the output of the IF amplifier. So there are two things limiting its output - the limiting diodes and the AGC. The signal tracing procedures have not been updated to consider the addition of diodes D40 and D41. Lift one end of them if you wish to continue with the tests. You may find that AGC action is keeping your K2 at lower than normal audio levels. I would suggest lowering the DC voltage at CB U2 pin 5 to about 3.7 volts and re-doing the CAL S HI and CAL S LO parameters to see if that helps any. You could lower it even more, but the S-meter alignment gets a bit strange if you go too far. If your K2 is below SN 3000, you do not have the AGC Threshold pot to adjust, but you can decrease the value of R1 to reduce the AGC Threshold voltage. If you have an older K2, check the turns on T7 - the newer windings have 20 turns of red wire and 5 turns of green. Also check to be certain T7 is not mounted backwards - the red winding connects to U12. I would check the diode in your RF Probe, and also check the value of the series resistor. Then check the specs for your DMM - the probe expects a DMM input resistance of 11 Megohms (note that most 'scopes have a 1 megohm input resistance, so the 'scope will not read the RF Probe DC output correctly). Hint - the series resistor in the probe and the input resistance of the DMM form a voltage divider such that the conversion to RMS is done with the resistive values. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/19/2011 9:25 AM, Ian Liston-Smith wrote: In a quest to get to the bottom of my K2 not having enough volume (after ascertaining the audio section is ok) I started upon the Signal Tracing section of the manual, made up the Elecraft RF probe and even made the 10.000 MHz xtal oscillator - appendix E page 9. [Elecraft] K1: Band options
Although I haven't received it yet, I have just picked up a very well spec'd K1 on ebay. It has the both the KFL1-4 (40/30/20/17 and 15m crystal) and the KFL1-2 which is for 40/20. I know that the two boards can co-exist to produce a six band transceiver - or at least that's how I read it, but clearly in my case there would be no benefit since 40/20 are already there on the four band board. I am wondering what would be involved in modifying the two band board for 80/15 - that seems to be an option at build time. Re: [Elecraft] The tortuous road from Aptos to UK
Some horror stories there, guys. I've had several sizeable shipments from Elecraft and all that have been caught for VAT have just had VAT applied to them plus the service charge. Usually, this takes 2 to 3 weeks overall. I've also had quite a few small parcels and packages of spares through from Elecraft with no problems at all. Transit time has been 5 working days, with a few exceptions taking about 10 working days. It seems that if the value of the shipment is declared as $30 or less, it escapes VAT. The ParcelForce depot is about 4 or 5 miles from home and apart from odd opening times, I've been able to pay the charges by CC either on the spot, or by a 4 minute duration automated telephone payment system. It seems I must count myself lucky so far with postal services, so I'll cross my fingers and hope that it stays that way. 73 all, Dave G3TJP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K1: Band options
To modify K1 2-band modules, first buy parts for the desired bands at http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K1 Parts Then change (only) the necessary parts on the 2-band module. For 80, I believe that you have to modify the main K1 board as well. You will need the K1 manual to set up the new bands when you finish soldering. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Weird AGC Behavior
Has anyone experienced anything like this? I am using a K3 (FW version 4.39; DSP version 2.73) with a KPA500 amp connected to the K3 with the Elecraft AUX cable. I normally have the AGC set for AGC-S when operating SSB or digital modes. If the K3 is in receive mode for several minutes, the AGC turns itself off without warning (accompanied by a hugh volume increase from the speaker). While this doesn't happen every time, it has happened several times. It seems to be most likely to happen if the Noise Blanker is turned on and the KPA500 amp is on and ready for operation (as opposed to being in standby mode). When I installed my KPA500, I upgraded the K3's firmware to the above versions. I have no idea what is causing the AGC to turn itself off, or if it has anything to do with the firmware upgrade, the amp, or both, or neither. I would appreciate any help that exorcises this demon. 73 de K6SBA David in Santa Barbara CA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K1: Band options
Stephen : You can either have a KFL-4 OR a KFL-2 in the K1, not both at the same time. Swapping the boards involves opening the case, and removing the ATU (if present) before you can get at the band board. This process requires the removal and reinstallation of a few screws so it is probably not the sort of thing that you want to do on the fly, in the field. [Elecraft] P3 report card
Way to go Alan. This weekend I used the new P3 FW for the 1st time. The redesigned curser with the heavy line on one side made a big difference in the heat of the Salmon Run. I was using SP and the curser made CW and SSB signal alignment easy plus helped focus on the sideband in use. The P3 waterfall made it easy to distinguish between atmospherics, spy radar, CW, SSB, AM, TTY and digital signals without having to tune each one individually. You see where each one is instantly. The waterfall also makes it easy to spot running stations by their periodic signal bursts. The result: when changing bands, I was able to spot and tune potential contacts immediately. I look forward to running in the California QSO party on 1-2 October. [Elecraft] K3 DVR anomaly
K3 DVR anomaly I use the M1-M4 CW DVR voice memories in my K3 to store various messages. I'm using software versions MCU 4.39 / DSP 2.73 . On CW, pressing the same or different memory button while a message is playing will result in the two messages being chained, as they should be. However, when the same is tried with the voice memories this does not occur. Instead of the audio in the two memories playing sequentially, only the first memory is played. This is followed by a period of silence before the K3 switches from transmit back into the receive mode. The amount of silence depends on the length of the recording in the memory of the 2nd button that is pressed. I recorded a 2 second voice message in M1 and a 6 second message in M2. During the playback of the M1 message I pressed the M2 button. After the M1 message ended, there was 6 seconds of silence before the K3 went from transmit back into the receive mode. Again, the amount of silence depends on the length of the message in the second button that is pressed. I believe that this is a bug and not a feature :-). Are others experiencing the same anomaly? If at all possible, please modify the K3 DVR software so it allows the chaining of voice messages in the same manner as CW messages. Re: [Elecraft] The tortuous road from Aptos to UK
Picking up is not the norm in my experience, Ken. I did it on this occasion because it happened to be convenient, but Parcelforce's normal service is to deliver within a couple of days of the VAT and handling charge being paid, which can be done over the phone or on the web. Where they could improve is in the speed of letting you know how much is due, but if you track the parcel you can ring them to find out and pay as soon as it's shown as arriving at the local depot. Sorry to hear you're still waiting for the £70 from 2008. I think you have been unlucky. 73 to all Geoff G3UCK -Original Message- From: Ken Chandler Exceptional for parcelfarce Geoff! [Elecraft] [OT] K9YC's Control Cable: Part Two
Hi All, I've taken Jim Brown and Don's advise and constructed a K2 to PC control cable using Shielded Cat 6 ethernet cable. The shield is tied to the DB9 shell on both ends of the cable, signal returns using the striped wire of each pair tied to pin 5. The cable appears to be a success: RFI problems are much improved! Now I'd like to construct similar control cables for other gear in the shack: 1) The cable from the K2 to a remoted KPA100 2) The cable from the W1 to the PC 3) Cable from a SignaLink to the PC and K2 4) etc Many of the above cables do not seem to have a return line and/or do not use Pin 5. Hello the problem was the 10pin ribbon cable to the I/O board. It was attached in the wrong direction on the power supply board and then therefore also on the I/O board, because the plugs are coded. [Elecraft] 20 watt tuner or 100 watt attached tuner?

Re: [Elecraft] The tortuous road from Aptos to UK
Just as a point of reference: The Irish Postal system generally handles Elecraft ( indeed other Shipments ) correctly and reasonably efficiently. If the correct tariff codes are used then for lower value items they ship them though and the postman collects a Cheque at the time of delivery. They use the full tariff code, not just the first part... For higher value Items like entire K3's the package is generally held in Dublin and you are advised of VAT + handling charge by post. You can pay by credit card or Check. On Mon, 2011-09-19 at 14:31 +0100, David Honey wrote: I have used international parcel post twice. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] K9YC's Control Cable: Part Two
Brian, Tie the signal returns (ground) for for the K2 to other Elecraft gear to pin 1. Note that pin 5 is only the signal return (ground) in the RS-232 (PC) portion of the cable (K2 and PC ends) For the W1 to PC cable, the signal return is pin 5, just as in the K2 to PC case. I have not looked at the SignaLink schematics (they are not convenient and on-line), so you are on your own there. I thought the SignaLink to PC connection was USB in any case. Certainly the audio cables can be made from twisted pair - it does not have to be shielded in most cases, the twist does most of the extraneous signal rejection. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/19/2011 5:12 PM, Brian - N5BCN wrote: Hi All, I've taken Jim Brown and Don's advise and constructed a K2 to PC control cable using Shielded Cat 6 ethernet cable. I have a K1 with a 4 band board for 40/30/20/15. Also built a two band board for 160 and 80 meters. This isn't a normally kitted option, but it is easy to do with the two band board. Elecraft has ALL the parts to do the 160 meter band EXCEPT the crystal, which in my case I bought from International Crystals. It covers 1.8-1.95 (about) and works great. I also have a dual band 80/40 board which stays in the K1 usually thru the winter. 73, Sandy W5TVW -Original Message- From: Stephen Prior Sent: Monday, September 19, 2011 10:15 AM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] K1: Band options Although I haven't received it yet, I have just picked up a very well spec'd K1 on ebay. Re: [Elecraft] AGC Weird Behavior
Thanks to everyone who responded to me directly or on the reflector. There was a consensus that the AGC problem is related to using Ham Radio Deluxe. I have a relatively early K3 (#565) have used HRD since I have had the radio. However, I only just started using the HRD Logger program; this coincides with the AGC problem. So, it is possible that certain HRD modules (such as the basic interface and DM780) may not be the cause of the AGC shut off but, due to excessive polling, the problem can occur when other modules are enabled. I don't really want to abandon HRD and particularly the DM780 module, but I can't have it messing with my radio! No word on when that will happen though. -- 73, Gary AB7MY = supp...@elecraft.com Elecraft Technical Support On 9/19/2011 12:18 PM, Rich - K1HTV wrote: K3 DVR anomaly I use the M1-M4 CW DVR voice memories in my K3 to store various messages. Thanks. 73, Rich - K1HTV - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] K1HTV Re: K3 DVR anomaly
Rich, If you have a delay at the end of the message then you recorded it that way. I had to go back and record my DVR messages several times before I was able to hit the rec button immediately after I was done. Now if I give my call for instance the TX drops as soon as I finish with the call. Rick K6LE On 9/19/2011, at 6:46 , Rich - K1HTV wrote: Thanks Gary. It's a real pain when I'm in a pileup calling a DX station on SSB and accidently hit the same or another memory button before the message playing back has ended. When this happens, my transmission stops but the K3 stays in the TX node during that time . If the DX stations quickly replies during after the message ends I can not here him because the K3 hasn't yet switched back to receive. Not good :-( . Hope that this can be corrected in the near future rather than later distant future. [Elecraft] Horrible signal on 10130
Is anyone else with a P3 hearing and seeing the signal now (04Z 20 Sep) on 10130? It's audible and has the strangest display on the P3 from 10113 to 10137. Nothing like that heard in SoCal. No P3 display showing like that either. matt W6NIA On Mon, 19 Sep 2011 23:04:20 -0500, you wrote: Is anyone else with a P3 hearing and seeing the signal now (04Z 20 Sep) on 10130? Re: [Elecraft] Horrible signal on 10130
I've been hearing (and seeing on the P3) an 850 Hz shift RTTY signal on 10.130 MHz for years now, virtually every evening. I use it as a propagation indicator on 30m, when it's strong I can work into the eastern US from here (NM) easily. I've read that it is an encrypted transmission of the US Navy, possibly from the Cutler ME NCS. I see that it turns up on this list: http://ik4hdq.net/doc/10to30MHz.htm But this signal I observe has an occupied BW of no more than 4 kHz. It's certainly not spread out over a 14 kHz bandwidth you indicate. Maybe you are seeing something else? Does it look like wide shift RTTY?
