Any chance of some teaser screen shots at these higher resolutions,

[Elecraft] KX3

2011-10-22 Thread Edward R. Cole
Wayne,

Considering these requests from Lance:

1) Since there is only the one antenna connection for HF/6m,
probably one needs a RF switched preamp or using two coax relays to
bypass the preamp when transmitting. Since Lance and I probably
would be running external power amps this is not hard to do.
2) RTS/DTR connections for PTT control is really more important
since just about all soundcard sw use the RS-232 lines for
controlling PTT/Keying in the radio. So the special serial cable
with broke-out lines to control PTT at the mic connector is
important. I suppose separate line-in/out will not be available on
the KX3 requiring use of mic and speaker connections.

Of course if direct I-Q data output is availabl, then the receive
audio is not used.

Hi Lance,

...wanted to ask if there would/could be some way to:

  1. Add an external preamp for 6m, as is done with the K3. If I am
to use this as a portable radio for 6m EME DXpeditions, it will be
imperative to be able to add a preamp in the receive line.

We can't tap into the KX3's internal RX path directly. However, a
preamp could be inserted externally in conjunction with a T/R switch.
We have enough general-purpose outputs on the KX3 to control such a
unit. Also, we're looking into the possibility of integrating a 6-
meter LNA into the BPF array to obtain a very low 6-m NF.

  2. Control the PTT line on the KX3 from the computer's Serial Port
RTS or CTS lines. JT65A switches the radio into transmit by first
  ...snip...
switching anything. This works great in the K3, and I hope there
will be the same logic in the KX3.

You'd have to split the RTS or CTS line out from the computer's RS232
connector and route it to the mic jack's PTT line. If there were
enough demand for such a cable, we might offer one as an option.

[Elecraft] KX3 vs FT817 - how do the inside dimensions compare?

No, not physical dimensions, but RX specs.

You show us what the 817 looks like here (in the big table...just

the 817):  http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm

I know the KX3 isn't finalized but it must be pretty close...it's
almost November, right!

I know it won't be a K3, but would love to see the close in specs
(5kc, 2kc) for with vs without the various roofing filters.

Any rough numbers yet (plus/minus)?

Johnny,

Maybe, but the FT-817 doesn't need anything except maybe the CW filter; if all
you're interested in is CW on 80-10 and don't ever intend to hook a transverter
to it, the out of box K2 is fine. I have both, so I have the option of using
them for different purposes; the 817 is my go radio, and the K2 is my home

[Elecraft] Text Decode on P3 screen?

2011-10-22 Thread John Oppenheimer
WB5GCX sent this on Jan 9, 2011, any comments?

The ability to work PSK and RTTY without a computer is SO cool...

I was just wondering if there are plans or any discussion on allowing a
portion of the P3 screen to show the K3 Text decode data for cw, RTTY,
and PSK31. I always assumed that would someday be part of the K3/P3
experience once we had more display real estate. That VFO B display
area on the K3 sure seems small some days :)

Oscar, WB5GCX

I second the question. The text decode data is streaming down the serial
line and available with the K3 Utility program. Can the P3 CPU capture
the same data stream and display it? With a third, text decode, P3
display mode replacing waterfall with text.

If you can see the board impressions in the coax, it's toast. Replace it.

You didn't say what kind of coax it is, but 9913 is very easily crushed.
According to Mosley, the maker of many military antennas, that's why the
military doesn't use it on the ground or in the ground. They use RG213, which
will not crush when run over by vehicles with tires.

That information is probably rather dated. Although RG-numbers used to
be a specification for cable (MANY years ago), they are now no more than
a generic description of size and impedance. You must get to a

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 vs FT817 - how do the inside dimensions compare?

2011-10-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi TR,

Eventually we'll have detailed comparison charts for the KX3 vs. other
small radios. I wouldn't put the K3 in this chart, because it's an
entirely different radio (full-size enclosure and front panel,
internal 100 W amp and ATU, high-performance sub receiver, up to 10
roofing filters, complete I/O complement including P3/RX ANT/
transverter connectors, etc.).

Generally speaking, the KX3 best fills the need for an ultra-compact
all-band/all-mode radio. The K2 offers similar band/mode coverage in a
full kit (where you get to solder), but the KX3 is a lot smaller and
has an updated user interface as well as I.F. DSP.

If you only need CW mode and a few of the most popular bands, the K1
or KX1 would be good choices. Both are full kits.

The KX1 is our smallest radio, with TFR (trail-friendly) format and an
attached paddle, like the KX3. It also uses a DDS VFO and SSB/AM
receive, providing SWL coverage in addition to the ham bands.

The K1 is a traditional analog radio, with an LC VFO. It has higher
power output and a wider-range ATU option than the KX1.

Re: [Elecraft] Now General RF Issue WAS 160m loop experiment a big failure

2011-10-22 Thread n5ge

The point made by Mosley was that the 9913 *style* coax can be crushed easily
due to the material used for insulation between the center conductor and the
shield. RG213 *style* coax does not suffer from that deficiency.

I suppose I could have looked up the MIL STD number of both the coaxes and
referred to them in that way, but if I had done so, only experts in reading MIL
STD numbers would have got the point.

Thank you for passing on your knowledge regarding coax, Jim.

manufacturer's part number and data sheet to know what a cable really is.

I use the LDG AT600 pro and it works fine. I avoid MFJ if I can. Some
stuff is fine other stuff is wellnot.

If you have not purchased one you might consider waiting for the KAT500
that Elecraft is working on.

[Elecraft] K3 DSP Upgrade Board Question

2011-10-22 Thread Phil Westover
I just sent this message to Elecraft support, but wondered if anyone out
there knows the answer or has experience:

I received my DSP upgrade board (K3DSPUPGD) around 10/14/2011 and am just
now installing it.

My K3 is serial number 1206.

Upon removing the original DSP board, I noted the board identifier which
reads

K3 DSP (then a white painted-over patch)
(c) 2007 Elecraft

The old board also has a label indicated Assy REV D

When I unpacked the new board, its identifier reads exactly the same:

K3 DSP (with a similar painted-over patch)
(c) 2007 Elecraft

The new board also has the label indicating Assy REV D

The two boards appear identical in every way.

If the new board is in fact a DSP upgrade, how does Elecraft identify them?
Did I received an old board by mistake?

I ended up reinstalling the old board and did not install the new one. I
wanted to wait until I received guidance from Elecraft.

Also, the instructions I downloaded for the new DSP board show a nylon
spacer. I don't have a nylon spacer in my K3. Seems I remember prior email
threads about that spacer going in to create a stiffer front board rest, but
I didn't have the spacer.

Whatever guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Any thoughts?

Phil, WA7URV

[Elecraft] K3 DSP Upgrade Board Question

2011-10-22 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Phil,

From your serial number, you definitely need a DSP upgrade.  However, you
observation proves exactly the contrary.  Did you get your K3 from used market
so that the previous owner has already replaced it?

Keep us advised, I am interested in knowing it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DSP Upgrade Board Question

2011-10-22 Thread Vic K2VCO
The easiest way to tell is that the new board has a little daughter-board with
low-pass
filter components on it. If both boards have them, you are already updated. If
neither,
then they sent you an old board. If one does and the other doesn't, install the
one that does!

[Elecraft] Ft-100D SOLD

Hi all,
The FT-100D station was sold instead of trading for the K2. Is there a
late model K2 with KSSB and KAT2, KIO and KDSP for sale?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2011-10-22 Thread kevinr
Good Evening,
We had a surprise sunny day which got warm. 50 degrees felt very
nice. It got me out working so I could bring back most of a cord of
wood. It is now stacked and ready for the fire. Hopefully I won't get
to this pile until January. But there is more timber lying down calling
me. I will continue until I am in danger of burying my 4WD truck.

Propagation has been fantastic lately. Ten meters to all over and
openings on the other bands keep me scanning and looking up calls. I
heard quite a few SOTA folks on the air when I would come in for a
break. I hope they were as warm as I was. From the forecast it looks
like more mild weather and great propagation next week.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

Sunday 2200z (Sunday 3 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0100z (Sunday 6 PM PDT) 7045 kHz

   Stay well,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

I've been to NZ and wish I could be there now. Best of luck to both
teams.

BTW: it's not totally off-topic. Isn't Eden Park (in Auckland, where
the game is to be played) presently experiencing a total power outage?
Won't those packed pubs need amateur radio to relay beer orders?
