[Elecraft] P3 Tip to center cursor in Fixed Tune mode

2011-11-24 Thread Mike K2MK
I prefer to keep my P3 in Fixed Tune mode. In this mode the VFO cursors
travel across the screen when the K3 is tuned. When the station of interest
is at the very edge of the screen it may be preferred to move the VFO-A
cursor to the center of the screen. The quickest official way to accomplish
this is to hold the CENTER button twice. There is no way to assign this
operation to an FN key.

My tip is to assign the FIXTRACK operation to a function key. When the FN
key is pressed the mode changes from FIXED to TRACKING and the VFO-A cursor
(and the station of interest) jump to center screen. Later, a quick push of
the same FN button returns the P3 to FIXED TUNE mode.

Mike K2MK

As you have noted, the solution is to assign the FixTrack On/Off toggle
key to the faxt push of a soft key. But you do NOT have to wait for the
second push to recenter the display -- you can simply hit the key twice
in quick succession and the display will be recentered with FixTrack on.

I LOVE the FixTrack option, with Averaging set for maximum, and that's
almost all I use during normal operation. I also assign the Peak
function to the fast push of a soft key, and toggle it on and off to
look at the bandwidth of individual signals. In doing so, one will
quickly get really disgusted with those hams producing the very dirty ones.

[Elecraft] KX3 Internal 20 watt auto-tuner VERSUS T1 (external) auto-tuner

2011-11-24 Thread Phil Hystad
Question on the KX3 internal 20-watt auto-tuner versus the T1 (external)
auto-tuner.

First a Caveat: I thought I asked this question earlier this week but I find
no evidence that I ever sent it so if this by chance is a duplicate, excuses
can be invented.

Is there an advantage to the KX3 internal 20-watt auto-tuner (option) versus
the T1 auto-tuner. I already have the T1 and I use it with my KX1 and a few
other QRP rigs. Besides being internal (which is nice) are there performance
or feature advantages to the new KX3 option internal 20-watt auto-tuner?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Internal 20 watt auto-tuner VERSUS T1 (external) auto-tuner

2011-11-24 Thread Matt Maguire
Wayne touched on this topic a couple of weeks ago in the KX3 mailing list:

I've been using a T1 with the KX3 during development, and it works
great. We do plan to support T1 remote band switching from the KX3.

However, now that I have the first prototype of the KXAT3 ATU module
in hand, I'll be switching to the internal tuner as soon as I get the
firmware written. Rich (AC7MA) did a beautiful job on the tuner
design. At 2x3 inches, it has to be the smallest 8-inductor/8-
capacitor L-network ever. The T1's PCB is about the same size, but
it's 7-L/7-C, so the KXAT3 will have a wider matching range (same as
the KAT3).

I'll send photos of the ATU integrated into the radio as soon as I get
it running.

2011-11-24 Thread Edward R. Cole
What I understood was the list was just a tool for notification. I
would expect the announcement will be an e-mail broadcast and
purchase will be FIFO (first in first out). So I if you are keen to
get your hands on a new KX3 keep watch on your in-basket or the
website. Once the opening call is made it will be Black Friday at Elecraft!

Re: price - In the video of the interview in Dayton, Wayne mentioned
a price spread of $899-1099. I'm hoping for the lower number as I
have finalized my garage sale of ham equipment and have the cash in
PayPal ready to purchase. I am also interested in what the
accessories are priced. I am looking at the KXFL3 filter, MH-3 mic,
and KXMM3 mobile mount in my initial purchase. I've used the
existing prices for filters and mics as an estimate.

BTW earliest delivery is indicated late Jan and Feb. so it won't be
under the tree this year even if the KX3 is open for business.

I am eager to get mine as I have only the K3 at this point (sold my
FT-847, FT-817, and Icom V8000).

Re: [Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-24 Thread ab2tc
Hi,

Does the K3 have an antenna tuner and is it enabled? If it does, your
readings may be entirely accurate. The K3 delivers 60 watts into the matched
load it sees. The KPA500, however is on the unmatched side and sees 80W
forward power and 20W reflected which is the 25% reflected power equivalent
to a 3:1 SWR. I think you should be able to measure reflected power on the
KPA500. And what is the SWR reported by the K3? The other possibility is
that with a real antenna you have RF in the shack sufficiently strong to
cause power measurements to vary along the transmission line.

AB2TC - Knut

RICHH wrote

 Hi
Maybe some one can answer this. I set my k3 to 60 watts and measure 60
watts on my kpa500 meter with the amp in standby trnsmitting into a dummy
load. When I switch to an antenna with a 3:1 swr the k3 still says 60
watts but the kpa500 now reads 80 watts with the amp still in standby.
So which is correct or neither ?

I' cll chance another post to this very long thread. That device plugs into

have to program the K3 macros into the logging program and assign them to

[Elecraft] [K3] RX Audio Distorted on FM

2011-11-24 Thread Pete-Astound
Happy Thanksgiving to All,

Just installed the KFL3B-FM Filter to my older K3.
Tuning around on 10 this morning I heard a station, but
things just didn't sound quite right. I fired up the 817
and found that the transmit audio sounds great, but the
receive audio sounds distorted as though it were being
overdriven. I've update all the firmware and haven't been
able to find any references to receive audio. Any suggestions?

Thanks..

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Audio Distorted on FM

2011-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Pete,

Please tell us the rest of the story. Do you have the 2.7/2.8 filter
set for SSB reception, or are you trying to use the FM filter for SSB
reception?

If you moved the 2.7/2.8 kHz filter to a different slot, you must tell
the K3 firmware where it is now. K3 Utility simplifies the process, but
you still have to tell it which filter is in which position.

 Happy Thanksgiving to All,

things just didn't sound quite right. I fired up the 817
and found that the transmit audio sounds great, but the
receive audio sounds distorted as though it were being
overdriven. I've update all the firmware and haven't been
able to find any references to receive audio. Any suggestions?

 Thanks..

[Elecraft] [K3] RX audio distortion on FM

2011-11-24 Thread Pete-Astound
Afternoon Don and the group,

Thanks for the quick response..

We're running the stock 2.7 filter in slot 3 and the FM
filter in slot 1.. CW and SSB all running fine with no
issues.. In fact, the FM didn't sound half bad coming thru
the 2.7 filter while playing around with it this afternoon.
Filter has not been moved since the day I put it in, just
added the KFL3B-FM to slot 1. I've gone thru the config
process and made sure everything was on and verified that in
FM mode, XFIL1 appears on the screen. I setup/verified the
filter options using the K3 utility last night and all
seemed well there.. I did noticed last night once
everything was installed that the background static was a
lot higher when I kicked it into FM mode so I'm willing to
bet I am over driving the audio path somewhere. Strictly
using the FM filter for FM.. As mentioned I have not had
any other issues with audio quality on any other mode until
I try to listen to anything on FM either on 10 or 6. Other
than that, radio (Serial # 1051) is stock with no other
modifications.. Since the bands are now pretty dead, I am
doing all the testing with my 817 in house. As mentioned,
TX audio sounds really good, the RX audio though sound just
plain distorted as though it were being over-drivin or I'm
not quite centered in the filter passband..

Re: [Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-24 Thread Rick Stealey

Most likely the K3 is putting out 60 watts, real watts. The wattmeter is also
probably correct reading 80 watts forward, with 20 reflected, equal to a net 60
watts. And 60 watts is radiated by the antenna. No power get reabsorbeds by
the amp because it is presenting a congugate match. i.e. any power coming back
from the antenna sees a perfect mismatch at the transmitter and gets
re-reflected back to the antenna. Explained 100 times better than I can by
Walt Maxwell in his books Reflections or maybe the current one is
Reflections III something like that. Anyway the point is, none of this rf
power heats up the finals.

Re: [Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I believe an ATU or other matching network provides a conjugate match. That
results in optimum power transfer because the RF current and voltage are in
phase and the SWR meter will read 1:1.

When there is a mismatch, as indicated a high SWR, the finals in the rig do
not see the optimum load impedance for efficient power transfer so they do
not operate at optimum efficiency. Lower efficiency means that more of the
d-c power applied to the finals is consumed in heat instead of RF, and the
amount of heat the finals must dissipate goes up. I believe that's what led
many Hams to mistakenly believe that the reflected power was being
absorbed in the finals.

The solution is, of course, to provide a proper termination for the finals.
When the antenna or other load doesn't present the right impedance, a
matching network (a.k.a. 'tuner' or ATU) can be inserted to provide one.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycle

2011-11-24 Thread NH7RO
I have the same problem with mine, too (SN#0250).

What I do is switch back and forth between a couple of bands with the band
buttons and then it's fine.

I made it into a habit whenever I turn the amp on so I can QRV as soon as I
want to and not have to fiddle with it when trying to snag a DX station.

I suspect sticky relays; wish there was a good and easy fix for this
annoyance!

Re: [Elecraft] wattage on k3 vs kpa500

2011-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
If I may, let me reinforce and paraphrase Ron's comments.
Today's transceivers are designed to work into a 50 ohm resistive load.
That means they will develop full power into a load which measures an
SWR = 1.0.
Now, most transmitters are designed to work properly into a SWR = 2.0
load - that means that they will develop full power output - however,
the efficiency may suffer, so the transmitter current draw may increase
when the load differs from a 1-1 SWR.
The power output will remain the same if the SWR is not 1-1, but there
will be more heat produced by the PA because the efficiency has been
reduced.
The reflected power is not dissipated in the finals (read the antenna
article on my website www.w3fpr.com), but the fact that the finals are
not operating at the full efficiency point, there will be increased heat
- that is just the way the laws of physics work.

[Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycles

2011-11-24 Thread Roy Morris
Tonight I also experienced the KPA-500 not putting out power in SSB mode
while the amp was in OPERATE mode. All parameters in the amp were normal.
The K3 set power output correctly indicated 39 watts. With the amp in
STANDBY mode the power went correctly to 100 set watts. I put the amp in
OPERATE mode and pushed the TUNE button on the K3. The amp then started to
work normally.
I am using both a PA Key cable and the KPAK3AUX cable. The amp is set up
for 240V operation. This is the first time I have experienced this. I also
am wondering if this is a relay problem. Roy Morris W4WFB

Hi Roy,
Try it without the PA Key cable, the KPA500 when connected to a K3 neither
needs or wants it to be connected.
All keying signals will get to the amp via the AUXBUS Cable.

[Elecraft] [K3] RX audio distorted on FM

2011-11-24 Thread Pete-Astound
Good evening All,

Well I've had a chance to play around some more and now
found that at least with a local signal from the 817 the
audio distortion on FM receive seems to have mysteriously
disappeared.

One question I still have though is that with an antenna
hooked up and listening on either 10 or 6 meters when the
band is quiet (night time with the pre-amp and attenuator
off), does the background static get at least twice as loud
if not more when you go from any of the modes to FM? Seems
like it did not does this when I had just the 2.7 filter
installed into slot 3. Tried turning the slot 1 filter off,
but it still defaults to it when in FM mode so I can't
compare unless I go back in and physically take that filter out.

Thanks for your responses..
