Re: [Elecraft] reflectors
I don't favor this suggestion at all. As long as people are somewhat careful about the content of the subject line, there is no problem (as far as I can see). When a particular thread becomes tedious (vide KX3, delivery times, etc.) it is straightforward enough to simply bypass these automatically to the trash. A multiplicity of lists would entail dredging each one for tailings of interest... Re: [Elecraft] reflectors
This gets brought up from time to time by those who want everything in the mail list to be only something they want to read. For those who really want to do that, every mail program, including major web mail clients like Google's, has a sorting mechanism to put things in different folders, or toss them out just like you want it. Or in a minute's time you can mark a hundred message for delete. Tired of hearing about KPA500 and KAT500, just set your client to delete them based on subject or content. In Google's Gmail web client, these are ridiculously easy to set up. 73, Guy On Sun, May 20, 2012 at 6:03 AM, Ussvdharma ussvdha...@yahoo.com wrote: how about seperate reflectors for k2, k3, p3??? this single one is getting out of control in length If you don't change direction you'll arrive where you're headed!Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

These were my questions Friday based on the published data sheet: Questions for someone at Flex's Dayton booth: Except for the most demanding large signal conditions, Slice Receivers are free to operate in wide-band mode without the need for RF pre-selection filters. 1. What does most demanding mean? Further, the dual Spectral Capture Units can be optimally combined on the FLEX-6700 and FLEX-6700R to increase Blocking Dynamic Range up to 3 dB and IMD DR3 up to 2 dB. 2. Increase BDR 3 dB better than what? Hi Kevin, Well, no need I think. Anyone that understands filtering can create filters that simply dump anything out of scope on a list. Apart from that, selecting a set of mails and delete the selection is also not much work once you have all wanted filtering in place. 73, Peter PA0PJE Op 20-05-12 13:58, Kevin schreef: You are correct. So, you want a separate reflector for each Elecraft product. That would be K1, K2, K3, P3, KPA500, KX1, KX3, KAT500, and then there are the myriad other little products too. And, the list keeps growing (hopefully). And, what if I have a question regarding the K3 and the P3 -- would I post to two reflectors? I don't think this suggestion has much merit. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Dayton New Equipment Show
It will be interesting to hear if the Flex 6000/6700 when used in Europe can deal with the European 40m BC stations. Some data. Over a period of several months when I was in Scotland, I measured the level of these 40m BC signals with which a receiver must cope. Using a 40m dipole at 70ft AGL firing N-S, not a beam, the level of the -carrier- of most of the European 40m BC stations at the shack end of the feeder would reach + 5 to +10 dbm under normal conditions of propagation. And there were many BC signals of similar strength on air at the same time. In this part of Europe the 40m BC signals are not as strong, probably due to being closer to the BC transmitters, which could benefit Flex's sales in Europe. 73, Geoff LX2AO On May 20, 2012 at 2:46 AM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: snip However, when one has five or six -33 dBm local signals (easy on 160 or 80 meters during a major contest ... or 40 meters in Europe with the superpower broadcasters just outside the band) the required signal handling is many orders of magnitude higher than just two -23 dBm (S9+60 dB) signals. [Elecraft] [OT] Rig Colors
I am sitting here on the couch in the shack with my Mac laptop in my lap and I realize that all my rigs up on the desk are all black. Vendors include Elecraft, Icom, and Yaesu and they are all black. And, they are all the same shade of black. Even my Astron power supplies, my Palstar dummy load, my Palstar tuner, my LP100A, my COMSpkrs are black. Actually, the only non black thing up there on my desk is my Begali Magnetic Classic paddle. It is gold looking. I have this photo of my shack when I was in high school and very little in that photo is black (at least from the photos perspective). The receiver, an HQ-170AC, was sort of a gray blue color, the transmitter, an Eico 720 has a very shiny aluminum front with meter and black knobs (although the case is black it is not seen in the photo). I have some miscellaneous Heathkit stuff which sports the non-black Heathkit colors. In this photo from 50 years ago, very little is black. OK, not much technical for Elecraft questions but now I am really curious about this. So, my question posted here on Sunday morning while I wait for the oatmeal to be ready. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF
I agree, in more ways than one, that we are talking apples and oranges here. The code between the devices has similar applications, but a Sabine Feedback Destroyer has multiple instances operating in a dedicated processor with nothing else to do but find the carriers while the K3 ANF is sharing its runtime with lots of other priorities. Another issue is that the ANF cannot remove the audio covered up by the interfering carrier, NOTHING can do this. All ANF can do is throw a notch over the interfering frequency... That is what it does, it cant actually REMOVE the coherent interferance from the incoherent intelligence. I was just at the NAB show where I saw a demonstration of a technology that does extract the underlying audio, which was truly magic. Also saw a demo of a video editing system (Adobe Premiere) that has a similar feature built in. Lots of non real time processing is needed to do this magic, however. If the ANF can be made better, great. I find it acceptable. Not perfect, but acceptable. If making it better doubles the price of the radio, then Im not for it, for what its worth :) -lu-w4lt- Message: 24 Date: Sat, 19 May 2012 16:50:24 -0500 From: W4ATK w4...@bellsouth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF To: Bill b...@w2blc.net Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 74bdcaf3-fca6-44df-a0e5-21728e101...@bellsouth.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I think we may be comparing apples to oranges here. In the K3 digital ANF, the notch filter is looking for coherent signals. The premise is that audio is less coherent than a CW carrier. Well, when Flex starts charging for software updates. That alone will kill future sales. With all the hype on how great their new lineup is,time will tell. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Dayton New Equipment Show
But then, we may be witnessing another change in the evolution of ham radio where the added value to a rig is in the software and not the hardware. By licensing their SmartSDR, Flex may be realizing that the key factor separating them from the other emerging SDRs lies with their software and not the hardware components. In particular, their DSP as well as the visual user interface. So, the future SDR rig may indeed be the software you load on your computer and the hardware component is nothing but a mere commodity that you pick up from an SDR vendor or throw together yourself. After all, once the key parts of an SDR hardware are made available as various ADC ICs and other components then there is only the software to deal with. I submit that this is indeed the future of ham radio where your new rig is something you download from a software vendor rather then buy at HRO. Logan, I still have the HQ-170AC (though missing the clock) and three Eico 720s. Alas, they are not my originals. I sold my original HQ-170AC for just under $200 in 1967 for money I needed for tuition and books that year in college. I gave away my Eico 720 and a lot of other equipment to an up-and-coming budding high-school aged ham after I realized that I would be in school forever (planned on PhD Physics, got drafted instead and joined the Air Force). The [novice] rigs I have today I picked up at various hamfests in the last 8 years. Around 1990 an audio company, Adcom, that at that time time was well regarded (no longer the case, I'm told by audio enthusiasts at work) had a line of audio gear that came out in both black and white. Apparently the white sold well in California but not the rest pf the US. Outside of CA you could get the white gear for about $100 less - and still didn't fly off the shelves. Maybe the ham companies are simply giving customers what they want? Yet it would be interesting to see a white K3! 73, Mike ab3ap On 05/20/2012 11:58 AM, Bill wrote: For years many were light grey. I think the problem with white is it will readily show all kinds of dirt including something as minor as skin oils. This will end up discoloring the rig around the knobs and switches. [Elecraft] K1 output
For the atton. to Don Wilhelm W3FPR Dear Don, I need again your help (I got your help time ago, for my K2 100, my problem was easily solved) My K1 serial nr. 493, revision D, with Firmware upgrade Rev. 109, and with KAT1, has been working flawlessly for some years. Now, after some months QRT in my shack, I tried it again, and a problem appeared: No matter what is the Power Out setting (I can modify output setting), when transmitting no bars are shown, in Tune mode shows P 0.1, and I cannot change power output with WPM, Same behaviour connected to a dummy load. I removed KAT1, (I did not forget the jumper in J2), and the problem persists. Connected the K1 (without KAT1) to a dummy load through an Oak Hills QRP wattmeter, it reads 2 watts no matter what is the power out setting. No bars in the display. When I transmit, the signal can be heard in a nearby receiver, at the frequency shown in the display. Reception is working OK. Re: [Elecraft] reflectors
The short answer is that Eric has already spoken on this issue, and has firmly said no to separate lists. Either we have a lot of new people on the Elecraft list, or they aren't bothering to check the archives before dredging up a subject that has been discussed many times before. Heck, I let Thunderbird sort all of the Elecraft lists/groups into a single folder. This morning there were 79 messages. I simply delete the ones not of interest; i.e. the new amp and antenna tuner. Traffic is heavy now, with new products like the KX3 and the KAT500 and the anticipation. Also, the Dayton Hamvention is a timely topic. How many messages are there today on the legacy models, like the K1 and K2? Other than the latest firmware release, we don't even hear that much about the K3. Bottom line is that it will die down - eventually. 72/73 de Jim - AD6CW On 5/20/2012 3:03 AM, Ussvdharma wrote: how about seperate reflectors for k2, k3, p3??? this single one is getting out of control in length If you don't change direction you'll arrive where you're headed!Sent from my iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Rig Colors
As I recall earlier Icom gear had sort of a greenish hue to their black, dependent upon the model. The Heathkit HF rigss of the '80s were brown. Kenwood offered its first dual band VHF/UHF rig in brushed aluminum. Early coputing equipment was mostly white, but only the IBM stuff has not become an ugly shade of yellow (even non-IBM stuff in non smoking environments yellows) over its lifetime. Black may show the dust more readily but it seems to preserve its luster over the equipmen't lifetime. Black is fine by me. It matches nearly any decor and it's universal. Does the radio work as claimed? That's why my black K3 sits on my desk. :-) 73, de Nate, N0NB -- The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500
This is correct. However the KAT500 will also work with other radios and amps, so we provide a couple of ways for amp interrupt. Re: [Elecraft] K1 output
Raimon, If you have 10 volts RF at the antenna jack and no DC voltage at the cathode of D15, then you have either a bad D15 or a bad connection at R36 or R37. In fact, your earlier K1 you had lifted one end of the resistor R36 when you installed the KAT1, and you must re-attach it when you remove the KAT1. It is on the bottom of the board. If you do have DC voltage at D15, then R4 or R34 could have bad soldering. In a rare instance, you night find a shorted C43 - check the resistance to ground from the cathode of D15, it should be close to 100k. Once you have DC voltage from D15, I believe the power indication and control will restore themselves to normal. It is possible that you have a damaged diode in the KAT1 wattmeter - especially suspect if an antenna was connected during the non-use period. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/20/2012 1:47 PM, raimon wrote: For the atton. to Don Wilhelm W3FPR Dear Don, I need again your help (I got your help time ago, for my K2 100, my problem was easily solved) My K1 serial nr. 493, revision D, with Firmware upgrade Rev. 109, and with KAT1, has been working flawlessly for some years. Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?
Ignacy, I ordered and attempted to install the RCS-12 last summer. It did not interface well with the K3/KPA500. I was going to have to build an interface box to get it work with the K3. I also had problems with the type of socket they were using for connecting the cable going to my remote switch. Only five of eight positions worked at all, and they were intermittent creating open circuits which weres causing my KPA500 solid state amp to suddenly see very high SWR while transmitting. After a month of trial and error and two replacement cable connectors from Ameritron, I asked for my money back and to their credit they let me ship the unit back for a full refund. So I would not recommend the RCS-12 based on my personal experience. I have not used or tried any Microham products. But I just recently purchased the Elecraft KRC2 automatic band decoder. This is a very high quality product and it was very easy to wire for my remote RC8S switch. It interfaces very nicely to the K3/KPA500 when I use a Y cable coming out of the Auxilliary Port on the K3. The Y cable splits in two -- one cable goes to the KPA500 amp and the other connects to the KRC2. The KRC2 follows the K3 automatically and switches between four antennas. It works really well and I would highly recommend it. It even works on 6 meters. Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500
Iain and all, I actually think there is little difference between tuning into an already resonant load and putting the tuner in bypass. I do not have the KAT500 to do any testing of that statement, but it is true for all the other Elecraft tuners I have worked with. To me, leaving the tuner in all the time just makes sense - just do a TUNE if there is any question. No need to bypass it except for testing purposes. In fact, doing a TUNE into that 50 ohm load may be better than bypassing since any residual reactance will be compensated for. I do hope Wayne. *Jim, In VK you will pay that for a pretty dumb LDG auto-tuner with a single antenna connection and more for a manual Palstar. Given the almost equal exchange rate the KAT-500 not only represents value for money (not a phrase I would use in a sentence with MFJ in it) it offers great versatility and quality built right into it. Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500)
The LDG AT-1000ProII is on a Dayton sale at Gigaparts for $459 with free shipping through Monday, the 21st. (Must be ordered on-line) I just posted this since there were $539 prices being mentioned on the reflector. I briefly owned an AT-1000. I hated it, and sold it at a loss. LDG was VERY unresponsive in addressing issues when I sent a virtually new product in for service. Most of us here know what Elecraft's service is like. It should be noted that the Elecraft tuner has THREE switched outputs, each of which remembers by band the settings for what was last connected. An early product description suggested that the tuner might be usable for SWRs below 3:1 at up to 1 or 1.2 kW. As to the comparison (by others) with products like MFJ (Mighty Fine Junk) -- you gotta be kidding. This is not just a tuner, it is an ELECRAFT tuner. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for May 20th 21st, 2012
Good Evening, Radio is fun on a foggy, chilly day. I got to see the eclipse vicariously via many viewpoints. One photo in my inbox already; maybe there will be some more. The comment about seeing many, many crescents under the trees was my favorite since I had seen it before in a near total eclipse. I wish I could have afforded to travel the few hundred miles it would have taken to see totality. Conditions were decent. Not fantastic but good enough to have fun and bring together a geographically diverse group. I had reports of QSB on me from many places but I only had it on you folks from the Midwest and the South. QRN was mild on 40 when we started but it grew steadily until the end of the net. I kept turning my RF gain back to keep it at a dull roar; just enough to dig out the weaker stations. There were some nearby stations I could not filter out except with the filter between my ears. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Reflectors
I use Apple mail and I have no problem deleting anything that is not of interest. But, I don't get the digest. I receive each e-mail message separately. This is the only way to handle a reflector like this so that you can use the mail filtering and macro actions on mail messages. This is what I do. I use a combination of smart folders plus various macros for creating sub-categories with Mac mail. Actually, I never delete anything. I still have just about every mail message received since 2009 when I started. Storage data is not a problem. 73, Guy I agree that the reflector is so big as to be nearly useless. I use Apple Mail and it treats the digest as a single e-mail message. Perhaps I am missing something, but how can I delete portions of the digest message that do not interest me? 73 John WB9JPH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Reflectors
Don't get the digest. Set the reflector up to send you individual emails, and then set up filters so that you see only what you want to see. Should it be Eric and Wayne's responsibility to set up individual reflectors because people are unwilling to figure out how to filter their own emails? And I hate to say it, but this reflector doesn't exist so that you only get messages that interest you. There are solutions to the problem that don't entail changing the reflector. 73, Scott, N9AA On 5/21/12 12:37 AM, WB9JPH wrote: I agree that the reflector is so big as to be nearly useless.
