Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier
Specs, manual etc. are all available on the Ten-Tec website: http://www.tentec.com/products/160%252d6-Meter-Solid-State-Linear-Amplifier.html I'm not sure about QSK operation. From the product brochure: "Amplifier keyed form direct connection to foot switch, hand switch, or straight key. Key Out from amplifier is provided to key radio." >From the manual: "The rear panel on the 418 has a 1/8” stereo jack for connection of a key input and key output. The tip is used as the key input to key the 418 and the ring is used as a key out for other configurations. The key out has a 4 millisecond delay to allow the amplifier’s relays to engage to prevent hot switching. The key out is not a relay. It is a transistor switch rated for a maximum of 24 volts and 250 mA. Note: You can not use paddles to key this amplifier." Re: [Elecraft] KX3 FM mode receive
Hi Adrian, I contacted Elecraft about this same problem and was told they are aware of it and are working on a solution. If the FM signal is strong the receive audio is great just not much of a meter deflection. I ran a signal generator into the KX3 and switched between all the modes and noticed that the S meter on a S9 signal in CW and SSB only gave abt one bar on the S meter. I stumbled on the when trying to use a local 6 meter repeater. I'm hoping they come up with a solution soon because my Ft817 does a great job on 6 meters with the same antenna so I might have to stick with that rig on 6. I agree it is a great little rig and with my computer headset I get great reports on SSB and have cracked some pileups with it. 73, Skip NC9O KX3 sn 955 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-FM-mode-receive-tp7560737p7560894.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, This week had some temperature extremes (at least for here). Highs of 55 degrees one day and 89 degrees the next. Then into the 60s and 70s. At least we have variety :) No rain but the fog does condense on the trees most mornings and drop a lot of precipitation. This is very localized at times; ranging from 1000 feet in elevation on up and only on the windward side of the mountain. It is like the trees on the mountains are scraping off the lowest layer of moisture. How many times does this happen before the winds here reach Wyoming? Propagation was very good this week. Light noise with some flutter at my morning sked times. I have not heard any special news about the sun other than predictions of the peak. Upon checking Space Weather I find only a smattering of spots with some minor flare activity. Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) Sunday 2200z (Sunday 3 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3 Question
I believe 6474 kHz probably falls within the definition of the 40 meter band on the K3. (I'm not home now so I can't check.) So when you jump back to 7050 the P3 does not use the per-band start/stop frequencies stored in EEPROM (since you haven't changed bands) but instead uses the algorithm for changing frequencies within a band. The algorithm prefers "even" start frequencies, meaning frequencies divisible by 100 kHz, 50 kHz, etc. I probably should tweak the algorithm so that if the band edge ends up too close to the K3 VFO frequency it moves down a bit to center the VFO better. Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood review
You might consider keeping the FT-817 for its 2m/432 all-mode capabilities. That's my plan. If the FT-817 isn't already flooding the used market, it should be once the FT-817 owners who have ordered KX3s receive theirs. Doh! Video cameras have stereo mics. So it's part of iOS. I was wondering how Griffin coded the audio into the video stream. They didn't have to, designers just did it native mode! [Elecraft] K3/P3 Question
Today, I was copying KSM on 6474 KHz on one VFO and decided to send K6KPH a signal report on 7050 KHz on the other. I had set my P3 to 20 KHz span, and the left edge was 7040 KHz [I'm in fixed-tune mode, the VFO cursor moves, I was "two spans up" from the bottom of the band] and the VFO A cursor was in the middle of the display when I was on 7050. I tapped A/B, now listening to KSM on 6474. The P3 showed a 20 KHz span from 6460 to 6480 and the signal at 6474. I got a QSA and QRK, and then tapped A/B again to swap VFO's. At this point, the left edge of the P3 display was my transmit frequency [7050] instead of 7040 where I had set it previously. It seems to be totally repeatable. Is this normal behavior? I guess I expected the P3 to return to the configuration I had set on the 40m VFO ... 7040-7060 with the tx freq in the middle. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Lesson in DSP noise reduction, please
LyLe wrote up a short tutorial on the NR a while back so you might search for that or maybe he put it on the Elecraft website. What I learned from it was the NR works to suppress uncorrelated noise and when it detects a signal it "builds a filter around" it and lets it pass. So I did some experimenting and found that with the CW bandpass set at about 1 KHz the NR is very effective against background noise or even static crashes. if you narrow the bandpass down to 200 Hz or so the NR is less effective since in a narrow band the noise is more correlated. This can be easily seen using the Spectrogram software. One of my favorite tricks for copying noise level QRP signals in a QRM free situation is to set the NR to MF5-2 or MF5-3 and DSP bandwidth to 1KHz. Tune in the signal you couldn't hear before and then punch on the APF. All of a sudden you have a 20 dB SNR where there wasn't a signal. Spectrogram helps set this up and see what's going on. Hope this helps ... 73, Brian, K0DTJ On 8/11/2012 11:25 AM, Don Putnick wrote: > I've read Steve Cady's manual and it explains quite well how DSP noise > reduction is implemented. [Elecraft] [K3] Lesson in DSP noise reduction, please
I've read Steve Cady's manual and it explains quite well how DSP noise reduction is implemented. What it doesn't explain is under what conditions the various settings should be used. For example, when should 100% noise reduction F1-1 thru F4-4 be used, and when should the mixed processed and unprocessed noise reduction MF5-1 thru MF8-4 be used? FWIW, I gain the most benefit from the hardware noise blanker. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sidetone feature request
FWIW, I would also like that feature. Would also like being able to adjust the pitch of a received signal for optimal copy without moving it in the passband. (You can do this indirectly with PITCH, except you can't listen to the actual signal while you are adjusting it; only the sidetone. Even if you turn MON to zero, there are still no signals audible while PITCH is engaged.) 73, Drew AF2Z On Sat, 11 Aug 2012 10:41:57 -0400, Dale wrote: >While trying to work D64K the other night on 20m CW with the filters >tightened down to about 100Hz around D64K (to filter out the typical >tuner-uppers, 'up'-cops, and stations calling on or nearly on >frequency) I wished that there was a way to offset the sidetone >frequency just a bit so that it wasn't the same as the filter center >frequency. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and HDSDR
What cables? I tried to adjust amplitude/phase on the laptop to eliminate the other sideband. No effect. Perhaps teh card does not work in stereo although the card setup indicated that it is capable. Then moved to desktop. The adjustments worked. However, there is lots of noise +-5Khz from the center. Is there a good reason to work many KHz from the center? Seems one needs a good write up on interfacing HDSDR with KX3. [Elecraft] K3 Sidetone feature request
While trying to work D64K the other night on 20m CW with the filters tightened down to about 100Hz around D64K (to filter out the typical tuner-uppers, 'up'-cops, and stations calling on or nearly on frequency) I wished that there was a way to offset the sidetone frequency just a bit so that it wasn't the same as the filter center frequency. This issue is that when operating fast QSK where the DX station is tightly centered in the filter bandpass, my own sidetone gets in the way of being able to hear the DX station since the frequency is the same. If the sidetone could be offset 50 to 100 Hz above or below the filter center frequency, this masking would no longer occur. Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking
Gary, One answer to your first question is that the results of IMDDR3 tests at 2 kHz spacing, performed with a 500 Hz IF filter inline, do not themselves tell you how a receiver will cope with two or more close spaced and strong signals inside its 500 Hz passband. In the case of a superhet, these tests at 2 kHz spacing only provide a measure of the IMDDR3 of the front end and usually the input part of the 500 Hz IF filter. They do not expose any "IMD weakness" which might exist in the complete IF filter, the IF or the backend of a receiver. 73, Geoff LX2AO On August 11, 2012 at 12:06 AM, Gary Gregory wrote: > *Barry, > > Perhaps more to the point..How does the measurement from Sherwood relate > to > real time performance and usability for the operator? > > In what way does an operator detect a difference so small between say the > top 3 on the list? > > Is the price differential worth buying say position one in the rankings > over a transceiver ranked at 2 or 3? > > Whilst the ranking may be valid in the single measurement as shown, in the > real world the vast majority are unlikely to ever detect such a small > difference if all the top 3 ranked units were sitting in the shack side by > side etc. > > I guess it comes down to which one looks the prettiest:-) > > Oh yeah, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder right? When I jump to a Reverse Beacon Network spot (on CW), the perceived audio tone of the station's CW is almost always higher than where I have my Pitch set, so in order to center the signal, I wind up tuning up-frequency perhaps 100-200 Hz. This is not altogether a bad thing, because it may move me out of the packet spot pileup, but it strikes me as odd. Of course, packet spots' frequency is only reported to the nearest 100 Hz, so I'd expect +/- 50 Hz variation in the tone of signals I jump on, but this appears to be bigger than that, and systematically in one direction. Back in the day, I would have assumed my receiver calibration was off, and taken steps to bring it on-frequency, but in this case I don't know what to do. I'm not particularly enthusiastic about fiddling with the Reference Oscillator calibration unless that is necessary. Coincidentally, when I tune in WWV in CW mode, the tone frequency of the carrier is where it should be, with a Hz or two, as measured by the beating with the Spot tone. Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking
I doubt if I would be able to appreciate the difference between the numbers of the top three ranked, but I'm no expert. The Sherwood numbers are not a comprehensive description of "listenability". I am able to appreciate the recent improvements in K3 AGC and NR. But these improvements, it is said, would have no effect on the Sherwood numbers. 73, Drew AF2Z On Sat, 11 Aug 2012 08:06:07 +1000, Gary wrote: >*Barry, > >Perhaps more to the point..How does the measurement from Sherwood relate to >real time performance and usability for the operator? > >In what way does an operator detect a difference so small between say the >top 3 on the list? > >Is the price differential worth buying say position one in the rankings >over a transceiver ranked at 2 or 3? > >Whilst the ranking may be valid in the single measurement as shown, in the >real world the vast majority are unlikely to ever detect such a small >difference if all the top 3 ranked units were sitting in the shack side by >side etc. > >I guess it comes down to which one looks the prettiest:-) > >Oh yeah, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder right? Re: [Elecraft] Small Screen for the QRP Gang
You could use your iPhone with iSDR or similar app. Take either I or Q output from KX3, and connect it to the iPhone microphone jack. Done it, it works. you only get 24KHz range, because the iPhone mic input is mono. Total cost under $10. (4pole jack, cable) Or you could connect both I and Q to the iPhone dock connector (stereo input) and get the full 48Khz Adi, M0THX On 11/08/2012 10:49, Ken wrote: > Wayne, Eric, & the Tech guys. > > Pretty far fetched maybe, but what would be cool is a small p3 with a small > screen, about the size of an iPhone 4, maybe possibly a bit bigger, shallow > depth to compliment the KX3 QRP transceiver, A truly portable unit!! > Could you shrink it down!!! > > Ken..G0ORH / M3i > > Sent from my iPhone 4s > > > > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Wayne, Eric, & the Tech guys. Pretty far fetched maybe, but what would be cool is a small p3 with a small screen, about the size of an iPhone 4, maybe possibly a bit bigger, shallow depth to compliment the KX3 QRP transceiver, A truly portable unit!! Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking
Wayne Very true and I can see and hear it in person in the radios. A side note on the P3/SVGA I had used LP-PAN and SDR-IQ both with my 5000 and they work OK LP-Pan I got rid of early on to hard to keep running all the time. SDR-IQ much better and some nice features but..the P3 is my favorite of them all for sure you plug it in and it works from the very first time out of the gate a fine product. I didn't care for it before the SVGA adapter came out but just the P3 is fine for outdoor use alone. All I can say is keep up the good work and may it be very rewarding for you your company and employees "GOOD JOB" Thx & 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Wayne Burdick Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 10:55 PM To: Phil Hystad Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net; j...@johnjeanantiqueradio.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking Phil Hystad wrote: > But, when you look at those top three entries you have to ask the > question "Are these measurements effectively the same?" I mean, is > there any true discernible difference between those top radios? The short answer: In most operating situations they would all perform equally well. The long answer: They're vastly different radios. The '5000 is definitely a nice rig, if a bit on the Statuesque end of the spectrum at 50+ pounds. Both the K3 and KX3 have much better blocking dynamic range than the '5000, yet are virtually equal to it in 2 kHz IMDDR3. Between the K3 and KX3, the K3 would be the better choice for serious contest work given its superhet architecture and narrow crystal filters. The K3 also has the highest-performance panadapter option of any radio. The KX3 would be the better choice for hand-held operation, and it will run much longer from a 9-volt lithium ultralife battery. 73, Wayne N6KR > > > On Aug 10, 2012, at 6:14 PM, John K9UWA > wrote: > >> I would love to see Rob do the K3 radio AGAIN with the latest goodies >> in it. >> Notice that it shows as tested in 2008. Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking
Yes a new test would be in order the FTDX-5000 has had many improvements since that test date in 2010 a lot of the firmware seemed to still be beta as new versions came as often as twice a week or more sometimes. Became a real pain updating but they come less often now. I find great pleasure in checking several of my radios with a push of a button on my amp where 3 radios can be checked on same antenna and signal within a split second. The 3 I have online right now are the FTDX-5000MP/K3/100 loaded/K2/100 loaded. My findings have been quite interesting to say the least for me anyway and enjoying every minute of it. To answer one poster's question it is a real horse race between the 5000 and the K3 with one never being a 100% winner but where the differences are is quite noticeable. Plus I might add that I'm a relativity new K3/P3 owner and not fully proficient with it yet by a far cry and have the 5000 since 3/10. I'm sure others have did this also but later on I may post some of my thoughts on these 2 rigs without any prejudice for either at this point. My thanks to Wayne for his input on the Sherwood ranking of the KX3 in the mix and how that was being misconstrued when comparing to the K3 and a few other rigs. In fact I was uncertain on that point and was doing some research when Wayne posted that for clarification. It really all is in the numbers and how you get there for sure. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Phil Hystad Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 9:23 PM To: j...@johnjeanantiqueradio.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Sherwood ranking But, when you look at those top three entries you have to ask the question "Are these measurements effectively the same?"
