[Elecraft] K3 filter WTB

2012-10-31 Thread John Lemay
Morning all

A long shot:- does any UK user want to sell me a used roofing CW filter for
the K3 ? Prefer 500Hz but open to suggestions.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charging

2012-10-31 Thread David Cutter
If it is true that all modern chargers and laptop supplies are switchmode
(?), I can't immediately see why they shouldn't run from a suitable dc
supply, since the first thing that happens in a switcher is to rectify the
mains. Even my 5 year old stuff is universal input, ie very wide voltage
range. So, they could pipe unregulated dc around the cabins. Each outlet
would need to be equipped with a ptc protection device to protect the supply
and the load in case a conventional device was attached. A plug-in
accessory with a bridge rectifier in it would also do the trick.

Sorry if this is getting off topic.

Using 400Hz power is risky, because the current in the RFI bypass
capacitors will much higher than normal. The leakage current through the
capacitors to the output and other accessible parts will be high,
possibly high enough to be a shock hazard. Running a 50-60Hz product
from 400Hz power may also cause early failure of those capacitors.

The KRX3 should have the same overall gain as the K3's main receiver.

Try going into BSET Mode to see if the preamp is turned on on the sub
receiver. You can also adjust other sub-RX settings in BSET mode, including
NB, NR, and filter bandwidth, all of which can affect gain.

[Elecraft] K3/KX3 data sub-modes

2012-10-31 Thread Julian, G4ILO
On the K3 and KX3, is it possible to set/get the sub-mode of PSK D (45 or 75

Is it likely in the future that the K3 and KX3 will support a 63 baud
variant of PSK D?

[Elecraft] KX3 and HDSDR?

2012-10-31 Thread Jim Sheldon
Has anyone with a KX3 successfully interfaced the HDSDR program to be able to
use it for control and spectrum display? Not having much luck here. My laptop

Jim,
I was able to make it work. I have an E-MU-0202 card capable of
192KHz, but I only use 48KHz as I like the definition better.

I was unaware of any internal laptop sound cards that will run at
greater than 48 KHz. If your sound card input is stereo, I suggest you
try 48KHz and see what happens.

If you want a headset without a mic, the Sony MDR7506 (pro) or

As I've mentioned before, I did a copy and paste of the K3 manual to create
an Excel file of the Main and Configuration menus. It's not automatic, but
it does allow you to keep a soft copy of your choices. Just erase or
overwrite my selections (at the time I uploaded it) with yours.

It available in the Files area of the Yahoo K3 reflector,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/files/, so you may have to join
that reflector to be able to download the file.

I whole-heartedly vote in for the Bose QC-15, or any of their noise
cancelling mics. What they do to the background noise is the best of
If all the competition and they are incredibly comfortable. I prefer
the kind that completely cover your ears but they do make an on the
ears version that will let outside sounds get through more than the
full cover variety. If you need to have a built in mic, they do make
an avionics set but that's very expensive. Me being a CW op use a

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 insatall

2012-10-31 Thread Edward R Cole
I built my K3/10 and installed the KRX3 with no issues of different
audio levels.

BTW running both Rx with dual LP-Pan on MAP65v2.3 sw shows the audio
level on a bar graph for each (when in diversity mode).

Two things were recently done to improve use of the
LP-Pan: 1) Enabling an open filter position in the K3 and KRX3
eliminates gain suck out by roofing filter which is connected in
parallel with the IF output jack. It shows as a dip in gain on a
panadaptor spectrum display at center freq. 2) Installed 32.860 MHz
xtal in LP-Pan which is 4x the IF freg of 8.215 MHz which eliminates
the previous +6 KHz freq. off set in the display sw (thanks to Larry, N8LP).

My 2m-eme dual-polarity adaptive receive system will get a work-out
in this weekend's eme contest. It extensively uses the dual-Rx
diversity reception mode of the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - using ear buds

I'm a cw only op also.
Over the years I've had custom made inner ear plugs, a Meyer Aviation
Headset, Extreme Isolation headphones, Yamaha headphones, ear-buds of
all kinds, ...etc...etc

Every over-the-ears headset I've ever tried ended up hurting my ears.

I ended up staying with el-cheepo Maxel stereo head buds:

They are quick and easy to take on/off.
They are so light, you forget they are on.
You don't have to jam them into your ears.

The only additional feature that would be nice is small foam cushion
tips.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 insatall

2012-10-31 Thread Brian Alsop
If one looks at the schematic there is a JFET buffer between the IF and
the IF out in the main RX. Isolation and impedance matching is its
function. There is no stock IF out for the subrx and hence no JFET.

JFETs have really high input impedances.

A one resistor gain mod is on the K3 site reduces the signal loss in
this JFET stage for those using the IF output jack.

[Elecraft] KX3's all over the CW/QRP bands

I'm amazed at what a high proportion of my contacts recently have been ops

will get preferential use from hams who have plenty of options, but it
still surprises me. I'm only doing CW and hanging about the QRP watering
holes, but a WAG is that at least 1 in 3 of my contacts is playing with a

Great market penetration!

too. My KX3 serial number is 1990 and the KXPD3 and KXBC3 were put on back
order. I know the folks at Elecraft are shipping these items now but I was
wondering if anyone close to my serial number has received theirs?? I know we
are not to bother Elecraft with this question and that is why I am asking the
group.

[Elecraft] A Bummer! Well, Sort Of!

2012-10-31 Thread Dyarnes
Hi All,

Last Saturday I got a notice from Elecraft that my KAT500 was in the loop,
and for me to confirm my order, which I did post haste. Monday morning I
got an auto shipping notice. I thought, Boy, that's fast! The tracking
info said it would be here today. Well, a package did arrive, from
Elecraft, but it was the KXBC3, for my KX3, instead of the KAT500! Shucks!
Of course, I'm glad to have the KXBC3, but it isn't close to what I'm most
anxious to have on the operating desk. Sure wish Elecraft would put a bit
more info in their shipping notices, like what it is that's coming! I
suppose that's too time consuming.

Anyway, guess I'll have a beer and get ready for the onslaught tonight!
Halloween! We tend to get lots of kids, which I don't mind. The reason we
get so many is that we live in a relatively enclosed neighborhood
development, with just two ways in and out, whereas most of the other homes
in the area surrounding us are scattered all over the desert. So, lots of
folks bring their kids here, from Lord only knows where, and let them do
their thing! A little unfair for us here in the neighborhood, perhaps, but
hey! It's for the kids! I think I have about an hour and a half before the
doorbell starts ringing off the wall!

Happy Halloween everyone!

Long thread, getting confused.

1. The IF output [to a P3 or anything else listening to 8215 KHz on the
IF OUT BNC connector] comes from the main receiver in the K3.

2. So far as I know, there is *no* IF output from the sub-receiver
unless you home brew it.

3. Earlier K3 S/N's had a somewhat low IF output for a P3, which
probably didn't exist then. Elecraft offers a mod [you're surprised?
:-)]. It involves removing one SM resistor and replacing it with
another. They supply both an SMD and a leaded-resistor, with
instructions for both. I used the leaded one, works fine.

4. I don't know what earlier means, but my K3 is S/N 642 and I did
the mod. Second biggest problem was disconnecting the nest of wires
from my wireless to get it out to work on. Biggest problem was
reconnecting all of them.

5. Somewhere in the delivery of later S/N's, the mod has been
incorporated.

6. With the mod completed [really easy], and all the wires reconnected,
I calibrated my S-meter to S9=50uV from my service monitor. The P3 then
calibrated nicely so S9=-73dBm on the ordinate.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

[Elecraft] KAT100 ATU power metering - a question from VK7JB

2012-10-31 Thread zendoc

Hi Group,

I've just finished building and calibrating a KAT100 to go with my K2
/ KPA100 combination.  The build was very smooth and the calibration
routine straight forward.  It's tuning my 80m loop, multi-band, just
fine.

I'd like to check my understanding about the SWR/Power metering with
this K2 + KPA100 + KAT100 set up:

Is the forward power value displayed  on the LCD of the K2 during
TUNE in this setup being measured by the SWR bridge in the KPA100?
My understanding  is that the forward power value IS provided by the
KPA100 and NOT the KAT100.

Is the SWR value displayed on the LCD of the K2 during TUNE
measured  at the KPA100 or the KPA100 bridge?

Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers,

John

Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 ATU power metering - a question from VK7JB

2012-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

If the KAT100 is used with the basic K2 (no KPA100), then the KAT100
will provide the forward and reverse power indication and those values
will be displayed by the K2 during a TUNE.

When the KPA100 is connected those forward and reflected values come
from the KPA100. A similar calculation of SWR is done in the KAT100 to
display the SWR on the LEDs.

I took off the shield on the KPA100 and those two diodes are tight against the

desolder and replace those? It is tight against the back panel and a toroid.
I do not want to risk damaging the nearby toroid - so I think I will remove the

You may indeed have a problem with D9 and the 3 associated resistors in the
base K2, BUT when the KAT2 or the KPA100 is installed, that circuit is
 ignored.
Both the KAT2 and the KPA100 contain a true wattmeter that is positioned
right at the output and used for power control.

The K2 microprocessor reads the actual output and compares that to the power
knob setting. That result tells the microprocessor how to adjust the drive.
Unlike other ham transceivers, the K2 uses a closed loop to control the power
instead of simply adjusting the drive.

What that also means is that the wattmeter in the KPA100 is not working (you
have shown that the one in the KAT2 is working OK). As I indicated before
(and also indicated by your high SWR indication) there is a high probability
that KPA100 diodes D16 and D17 have been damaged.

When the diodes are damaged, the output back to the MCU is most likely zero,
and the MCU *thinks* there is no power output - it then increases the drive
to the maximum in an attempt to develop power. The result is a HiCur warning
and stress on the base K2 PA transistors.

Replace KPA100 D16 and D17 as the first order of business and after that you
can investigate any remaining problems. Note that those diodes can be half
bad and may show as good with a diode test - replacement is the first order
 of business.

Without the ATU and the dummy load connected to the base K2 antenna, things
are rather strange At 2 watts set on the power knob, output on the
external meter is 2.7 watts and current draw is 0.96 amps; at a knob setting
of 2.4 watts, output is up to 7 watts on the external meter and current draw
is 1.4 amps; at a knob setting of 2.5 watts, power output is 10 watts and
current draw is 1.96 amps; at 3 watts knob setting, I get the high current
warning, and the external meter is pegged.

This leads me to believe that the base K2 is overdriving the KPA100. At low
power settings - 5 watts, I was pegging the LEDs indicating power on the
LDG100 autotuner, at over 125 watts.

Do not be too quick to conclude that there is something wrong with the base

band to band - if it only off by a watt or two, then all is OK That is
bypassed when the KAT2 or KPA100 is installed.

Yes, do check with the external wattmeter - both with and without the

levels appeared to modulate correctly with the PWR knob although this is
an item i have to double check. With the ATU disconnected, the displayed

there is something wrong with the base K2. I still have to do what Don

Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Setup

2012-10-31 Thread Gary K9GS
Hello Tony,

Last night I changed over from a true RS232 CAT interface to a USB to
Serial port converter. I had all kinds of problems with N1MM and
Logger32 not recognizing the new set-up. Then I re-booted the computer
and all worked great.

You didn't say what you're using for a CW interface...I use WinKey. You
can also use a single cable for CAT and CW keying. I used this once for
a contest and it worked well. Here's how:

***
At Dayton I heard rumors that the K3 (and the KX3) could send CW in N1MM
Contesting program with no need for a second control line (RS-232 or
Interface to key through the key jack). I searched the K3 mailing list
and found this from Joe, W4TV:

You can use a standard USB to serial adapter to do PTT and CW with the
K3 with no other interface. Set the K3's CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu item to
rtS-dtr, check CW/Other on the Radio port in N1MM, set DTR = CW, set
RTS=PTT and *UNCHECK* all of the PTT via Radio Command options.

The degree to which CW operates cleanly depends on other processes in
your computer. You may or may not be happy with the results...

This weekend for the CQ WPX CW I tried it and it worked flawlessly!

I have done a screen capture of the configuration screen in N1MM and
posted it at:
http://www.k8zt.com/K3_Keying_CW_with_N1MM.jpg

***

I don't know if this will help but it's worth a shot.

While it is sometimes possible to clip the leads on the top of the board
and use the remaining leads to mount new diodes, I suggest that is
cheating. I always remove the board from the heatsink and de-solder

Usually, the thermal pads will stay in place and can be re-used unless

Re: [Elecraft] K2: High SWR On Dummy Load

2012-10-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
If you can clip the bad diodes off at the glass enclosures, you may be able
to simply lay the new ones in place and solder their leads to the stubs
sticking up out of the pcb, then trim the excess off. I can tell you from
years of experience that a lot of field repairs are made that way on
commercial equipment and they are as solid as sucking out the leads and
installing parts in the holes in the pcb.

If you do remove the heat sink, be aware that the thermal pads between the
transistors and the heat sink may tear with some of the pad sticking to the
transistor and some stuck to the heat sink. That's not a show stopper as
long as you don't lose sections of pads. Just leave the pads alone. When you
put it back together when you're done the pads will fit and work just fine.

And do NOT forget to retighten the screws in the transistors after about 5
to 10 hours of operation. We are the same age so you'll probably remember
having to re-tighten head gaskets on cars a short while after replacing them
in the old days. This is much the same, Hi!

Don,

I took off the shield on the KPA100 and those two diodes are tight against
the back panel and the toroid. What would you recommend is the best way to
desolder and replace those? It is tight against the back panel and a
toroid. I do not want to risk damaging the nearby toroid - so I think I
will remove the the standoffs and remove the PCB from the heat sink and
desolder it from the back side (non component) side. Is this what you
would do?

Thanks

 Ariel,

You may indeed have a problem with D9 and the 3 associated resistors in
the base K2, BUT when the KAT2 or the KPA100 is installed, that circuit is
ignored.
Both the KAT2 and the KPA100 contain a true wattmeter that is positioned
right at the output and used for power control.

The K2 microprocessor reads the actual output and compares that to the
power knob setting. That result tells the microprocessor how to adjust the
drive. Unlike other ham transceivers, the K2 uses a closed loop to control
the power instead of simply adjusting the drive.

What that also means is that the wattmeter in the KPA100 is not working
(you have shown that the one in the KAT2 is working OK). As I indicated
before (and also indicated by your high SWR indication) there is a high
probability that KPA100 diodes D16 and D17 have been damaged.

When the diodes are damaged, the output back to the MCU is most likely
zero, and the MCU *thinks* there is no power output - it then increases the
drive to the maximum in an attempt to develop power. The result is a HiCur
warning and stress on the base K2 PA transistors.

Replace KPA100 D16 and D17 as the first order of business and after that
you can investigate any remaining problems. Note that those diodes can be
half bad and may show as good with a diode test - replacement is the first
order of business.

The K2 with the ATU behaves as expected - internal meter agrees well with
the external meter, current draw is as expected, and so forth for various
power levels up to 10watts checked out. It was connected to a dummy load.

Without the ATU and the dummy load connected to the base K2 antenna,
things are rather strange At 2 watts set on the power knob, output on
the external meter is 2.7 watts and current draw is 0.96 amps; at a knob
setting of 2.4 watts, output is up to 7 watts on the external meter and
current draw is 1.4 amps; at a knob setting of 2.5 watts, power output is 10
watts and current draw is 1.96 amps; at 3 watts knob setting, I get the high
current warning, and the external meter is pegged.

This leads me to believe that the base K2 is overdriving the KPA100. At
low power settings - 5 watts, I was pegging the LEDs indicating power on the
LDG100 autotuner, at over 125 watts.

 Ariel,

Do not be too quick to conclude that there is something wrong with the
base K2. The basic K2 uses only an RF voltage diode to display the power
output, and it may not be exact - it depends on the load and may vary from
band to band - if it only off by a watt or two, then all is OK That is
bypassed when the KAT2 or KPA100 is installed.

Yes, do check with the external wattmeter - both with and without the
KPA100. I still think KPA100 diodes D16 and D17 are highest on the suspect
list with other KPA100 wattmeter components being second on that list.

Wayne has assured me that torn pads are no problem as long as pieces are not
pulled off and lost, and I have been through that many times with no
deleterious effects on my KPA100!

Ariel.

While it is sometimes possible to clip the leads on the top of the board and
use the remaining leads to mount new diodes, I suggest that is cheating.
I always remove the board from the heatsink and de-solder the diodes from
below.
Usually, the thermal pads will stay in place and can be re-used unless they
become torn.
