2. Remove the K3's top cover.
3. Check to see if at least -5 VDC is present on pin 8 (or the gold

5. If any of these checks indicates that the magic smoke has been

I want to check my K3 for communication with my computer.

Does anybody know what value and which pin to check on U1 on the I O
board lightning strike near by hit my wireless router modem and killed
my desk top computer which was connected to my K3 rs232 port?
I do not have at this time any computer or usb/serial adapter to test
the radio with.

[Elecraft] Put my new KAT500 thru the wringers today

2012-12-10 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

Got my factory-built KAT500 today. Despite the missing cable (paid for)
E850463, I figured out how to run it manually. They did send along a
strange 3ft RCA RG59 cable though. right now the cat's playing with it.

Getting an automatic AT, for me, was kinda just a laughing point. I
quizzed Dave about it rather heavily. Me and Marconi weren't sure young
Dave could be right on all counts since he hasn't seen the wire here.

But I thought it would be fun to switch bands rapidly, and without my
short clip-board and penciled columns of the current settings for the
wonderful Palstar AT2K tuner.

Well, I started at 160m and went thru 60m and finished at 10m. Didn't
miss anything.

There was the clattering expected; the metering reported wonderfully
high SWR's as she tried to figure out how to match the 110' section of
450 fed with a few loops of coax at the shack end.

I got to raise my eyebrows in that All-Too-Certain of ones-self that we
get after operating on a few continents with wire and one of the combat
tours I had a 1500 foot V-beam ... That was before most of your
respective times though.

So I was about to say "Ah HAH!" when the noise stopped.

"Gave up, did ya??" .. The last number I saw on the K3 was something like
98:1 ... hahahahahahahahaha ...

But it was quiet and now the K3 said !.1:1 "One-point-one to one?" I
asked ..

OK, I lost that one on 160 .. so on to make it fail somewhere else.

By 30 meters I was having fun because the pragmatic side of me knew this
was going to be wa tooo KEWL ... "IF" she made it to ten. Somewhere
in 280 feet of wire at 80 feet, there must be a rotten mis-match that
the slim little beastie can't handle.

Guess I was wrong.

Kudos to Dave at Elecraft for steering me to the KAT500. K# is perched
on a thin mat of that rubber-cloth ya get at Wal-Mart sewing area. Who
knows, if I get a cable I think it will be automated.

There is a "Computer Interface Cable" which has a 3.5mm one-end and USB
the other. That's into the computer now but I have no idea who talks to
it. K3-Utility didn't anyway.

Nice piece of gear. In a week or two my 1200' wire goes up .. gotta have
something for the diversity setup. Wonder if I can bamboozle the KAT500
on that one. Coax-balun to 600-ohm ladder to the wire .. heh heh heh heh

If you don't have one and wonder if it will load into your stealth
clothesline, there is a good chance it will. Afterall, I am loading some
of the 80 foot oak trees.

KAT500: Good for the shack!

I'm a freelance writer who has been writing manuals for Elecraft for 11

2012-12-10 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Well, RM, it's almost certainly something in the interconnect cable with the
DB connectors running from the K3 to the KPA500. That's what moved as you
connected the keyer.

Since you checked K3 end, have you checked the KPA500 end? Are both
jackscrews tight?

position the K3 & KPA500 are not talking. I get no message on the K3 display
the KPA is on. The amp is just bypassing RF.
The KPA displays the K3 output power but when I key the amp sits in
standby. The band following is not working. They just are not communicating.
Jamie suggested unplugging all the interconnect cables & reinserting them in
the K3 & KPA. Maybe a lost connection.
That had no effect. I'm open to suggestions as a starting point or if anyone
else has experienced this & how they resolved the problem. I want to get the
KPA going as I have a new KAT500 in a box on the shack floor.

2012-12-10 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
The auxbus connection on the ACC jack seems to be open.

This is the one that always gets folks... This trouble is 95 percent
something not in all the way. The other 4 percent is breaking a wire or
connector. The other 1 percent is an accidental change to a menu setting.
 In particular:

Make sure that *every single connector* is in *all the way* on both boxes,
properly seated. That means *EACH *cable connector, *skipping none*,
whether you took it out or not, checking at *BOTH* ends.

Wish I had a buck for every time that was the answer for something
"suddenly" not working. Of course, I've only done that to myself dozens of
times. Same answer for me, too :>)

2012-12-10 Thread David Moes
This is true in many cases. however in many small devices like phones
and such put decent modern drivers in that will sound pretty good
without all the electronic wizardry that the device uses to make it even
better my speaker mic was proof of that. Its amazing how the fine
points of speaker driver have changed in the miniature world of today
yet the basic principle is still the same as the good old Rice Kellogg
design of 1924.

Where the speaker, its driving electronics and the enclosure are all
in one package, there's great scope to compensate for all the
short-comings of the arrangement with sophisticated (software) filters
which you will not get when you salvage just the speaker which is not
in itself optimised for clarity - it's the whole ensemble.

Yup. My career was in the semiconductor industry and we knew several

And to put things slightly on topic, I'd be amazed if there were any

Paul,

One possible explanation is if you currently have CW Keying enabled via your
COM port AND you had just turned on your computer prior about the same time
as turning on the rig. Your computer COM port randomly fires DTR/CTS
signals on power-up which would present itself as you describe.

If you don't use COM CW keying, I'm stumped. ;-)

Bob K5WA

Hi All,

I've noticed an odd behavior on my K3.? From the time power is applied,
the TX light begins to flutter on and off in a random manner.? When it's on,

the K3 transmits, this in CW mode.? It doesn't matter which band is
selected.?

I've just recently installed firmware version 4.60, but this has been going
on

for a while.? This condition lasts for as long as 45 seconds, then stops on
its

own (so far).

ANY help will be very much appreciated!

Thanks, David et.al.

You're right. I've been using the Keyspan driver for the K3 Utility. I
never bothered to reload the FTDI driver after I did a clean re-install of
the operating system.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 stereo volume balance

2012-12-10 Thread F5vjc
My hearing is OK, however I do find that when AFX is enabled in my K3 the
audio is always unbalanced, ie louder in the left channel to such an extent
I don't like to use the AFX much.
I've always thought an AF balance would be useful, at present this is only
available when the Sub RX is active.

Further do David's suggestions - do you have an RS232 keying circuit keying
the K3? If so, a component in that circuit could be starting to fail.

Just a thought ...

Since its keying CW do you have a straight key or bug installed? a weak
short or breaking down insulator could do that. try with the key
unplugged.

Also does only do it when you first power on the K3 and perhaps other
stuff at the same time like a computer? my computer will key the K3 CW

k3 or I put it in TX test

P.S. sorry Paul if you got this twice. I sent reply to you in error

Re: [Elecraft] K3 stereo volume balance

2012-12-10 Thread Vic K2VCO
As far as I know, there isn't. I've suggested that the CONFIG option (SUB AF = BALANCE)
that makes the sub volume control into a balance
control also should cause it to be a balance control for the main receiver when the sub is
off or not installed. I don't see a downside, but I'm not the programmer!

Is there a way in K3 firmware to re-balance the left and right channels

accomplishes this task? Preferably one that is immune to RF.

Re: [Elecraft] How Tin-Whiskers Form

2012-12-10 Thread Vic K2VCO
Fascinating, as are the comments following the article. The removal of metallic lead from
electronics that should be recycled anyway, in return for a large increase in failures,
does not seem to me to be a good deal for civilization (some of the comments mentioned the
removal of lead from gasoline, which in contrast was a very good decision).
There should be a name for the irrational fear of tiny quantities of substances that would
be harmful only in large amounts -- like RF, to give another example.

No, I will not answer outraged personal emails on this subject!

Re: [Elecraft] Big weakness in Macro's

2012-12-10 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Ed,
You probably already now this, but other K3 or KX3 users may not. Until there
is a single command for changing between the K3's front panel mic jack, the
rear panel mic jack or the rear panel line in, the way to make the switch is to
use one of these macros.

Mic Input - Front Panel:  MN053;DN;DN;DN;MN255;
Mic Input - Rear Panel:   MN053;DN;DN;DN;UP;MN255;
Line Input - Rear Panel:  MN053;UP;UP;MN255;

You can also add gain (MG0##;) and/or compression (CP0##;) settings to the
microphone macro examples above, where ## is the desired two digit setting. Use
your front panel MIC gain pot to set levels if you use Line Input.

For those who are interested in writing macros for the K3 or KX3, you can
download the K3/KX3 Programmer's Reference at:

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] autonotch now distorts SSB audio

2012-12-10 Thread Bill Clarke
You are not alone regarding problems with ANF (NTCH) distortion of SSB
received signals. Too bad the problem continues unaddressed - as it is
the single remaining receive issue I have with my K3.

There is a thread about it here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg136366.html

A couple of responses were actually explanatory and helpful - others
were laughable detractors. The thread is worth reading. Some responders
say they have no problem with the distortion and find it acceptable. I
personally do not accept it, as it detracts from an otherwise nearly
perfect receiver.

As an interim fix, I suggest you reduce the AGC SLP to a low number,
such as 2 or 3 (the settings I use).
